Really nice store! With no surprise, they mostly sell hats and hat accessories here. There are other trinkets like soaps, rocks, jewelry. The store staff here was really helpful in choosing and sizing of our hats. They offer free cleaning and shaping if you return here. Expect to pay quite a bit for these hats and accessories. But that's cause they are high quality stetsons hats. For what they are, you are paying for a fair price for the hats. None of the accessories really stuck out to be from looks and price so we decided to get those at a later time. They also have a really nice coffee shop at the door here with great drinks and pastries. read more

I spent a nice winter afternoon exploring the shops on South Congress, and Maufrais was possibly my favorite stop! The shop primarily sells cowboy hats, and what's super cool is that they can customize the hats to fit your head shape, or you can buy a pre-shaped one. They also have a small coffee bar in case you're thirsty from browsing hats. I loved seeing all the gradients of hats on display. The store itself is very aesthetic, and I really appreciated the laid-back vibe. The associates didn't bother me at all while I tried on a bunch of hats and snapped some silly selfies in the mirror. The hats are expensive (the custom hats I saw were around $700+, and the pre-shaped ones were $200+), but it's such a unique shop that I still think it's worth stopping by if you're in Austin or anywhere in Texas! read more

Visited the Maufrais store in Austin, TX on the morning of 12/28/2024. I really wanted my wife to get a western hat. Approached a staff member (Leann) for assistance. She offered guidance on the hats, was very patient with my wife and helped her find the right hat. She also suggested branding my wife's intials in the hat making it extra special. I live out-of-state, and had questions regarding an item on their website -- the photos left me needing more information. Tried calling repeatedly but they don't seem to answer calls, instructing to email instead. Honestly, I couldn't be more happy about the customer service. Really nice employees, however there is a downside. I went in to have a personal hat shaped, meaning I didn't buy it there, and they immediately sounded off-put by the idea. Nevertheless, when it came down to the shape of the hat, it was wrong in a few different ways. I'm normally not one to be extremely particular about things, but when it comes to expensive hats, I feel as that I have every right to be particular about it. As well, the shaper didn't seem all that enthused about having to shape my hat, and seemed that she might be pretty new. However, once more, everyone was still fairly polite. Overall, I left with a somewhat lopsided hat, and $60 feeling wasted when I was unto the notion that they were experts at their craft. I'll be heading elsewhere to fix it. I'm sure they're lovely when you're buying one of theirs, but if you're coming in with your own, think twice!! Update: I took it to a Cavendars up near the Bass Pro in Round Rock. Absolutely outstanding job by them, and best part: free! If you value your time and energy (and your money!!!), do not bring your own hats here. They won't give you much of any care for it, and you're better off hitching up with the boot barn down the road. read more

*COVID Update* Masks aren't required around here, and barely anyone wears masks indoors. This store is next to a coffee joint, and it's hard to see the name of the store. Parking in SoCo is mostly street, some with pay stations. There were no public restrooms in here. This is a fun hat store! It's really an experience. Prices are on the high side, but the service is great. The customized part of it is really great. They have quite a selection, and it's fun to try on different styles and colors. This is my 3rd year as a Texan and I've been wanting a custom-made hat for so long. I came across Maufrais when walking around S. Congress back when I first moved to Austin and was instantly captivated by the boho meets cowboy-chic aesthetic of this boutique. Since I have a larger head the hats that were pre-made didn't quite fit my head comfortably. That's when I was introduced to the concept of getting a hat custom-made, but at the time I wasn't quite ready to take the plunge. Since then, I've been to Maufrais on several occasions just to look around, and each and every time the associates there were so friendly and willing to answer all my questions. They even offered to shape a hat just so I can see what shape I liked, even if I wasn't ready to make a purchase. Fast-forward to today, I once again stepped into Maufrais and I was browsing around, when I met Andrew who was a specialist there. He helped me find a hat that fit my overall style and gave me expert recommendations on the shape that would be most suitable. Took my husband here for his birthday, this place is a dream!! He was custom fitted and had styling direction from 2 lovely young women (Shaun and Aundrea I believe). This was a big purchase for us, and we couldn't be happier. We were educated about manufacturing materials, the shaping options and process, as well as upkeep. I noticed pricing info isn't available online so for reference we spent around $900 including tip for every bell and whistle available. Fantastic place for special occasions, again ambiance and staffing is superb! Edit-the shaping process takes about 15-20 minutes and there is an adorable coffee shop within the hat store that has tasty lattes to enjoy while you browse. The location is easy to miss as well! The sign is large but has aged to be the same color as the building. read more

The in-store experience took a frustrating turn when we were handed off to an associate to have the hat shaped. The person who helped with the fit was friendly, but instead of discussing our options for getting the preferred hat (like asking if we were local or when we needed it by), they just upsold us. That's fine, we were looking for a forever hat. But then came the letdown -- they promised to custom fit the hat to our face, style, and preferences, but after several attempts, they couldn't quite get it right. We went back and forth pointing out obvious flaws at least 10 times, and every time the hat came back, it was still off. What made it worse is that this was one of their nicer, higher-end hats, and we were passed off to someone who didn't seem to have the experience for making such significant adjustments to a custom, final-sale item. There was no guidance or encouragement on how to personalize it or elevate the look either. Oh, and we had to leave without a box! Just really disappointed and frustrated and really don't love the way my hat turned out at all. Overall experience was lacking and felt like they were just trying to churn and burn. Shaun helped me and made the experience really special! The hat was a gift and the whole process was really "cool" and fun - I feel like I got two gifts - the hat shop experience AND the hat. I plan to highly recommend Maufrais for anyone who wants a custom hat plus the experience.
