Monday happy hour
Takao N.

We love coming here on Monday because of happy hours. We ordered a few appetizers and Mexican martinis. I like Maudie's and this location has a good ol' vibe and is our favorite of all.

We went here for an early dinner with our son and daughter in law on a Saturday. We arrived and were quickly seated (chips and salsa were being brought to the table as we sat down) and asked for our drink order. Our drinks we brought out quickly and the server then took our orders. We had guacamole and queso as appetizers which were plenty big enough and delicious. Our food arrived quickly and everything was hot and tasty. The el jefe tamales (my wife's dish) were served with beans and rice. The flavor was great, but it was odd that they were not wrapped in corn husks. The beans and rice were both flavorful and went well either way the tamales. The fajita tacos were well seasoned and very tasty (according to my son) and the quesadilla was very good and stuffed either way delicious filling. I had the chicken chile rellano which came with rice and beans and a couple hot flour tortillas. The beans and rice were very tasty. The rellano was served open face stuffed with shredded chicken and topped with cheese. It was ok, but the chicken lacked full flavor and the cheese sauce was a bit runny. The beer was cold and the margaritas were very good. Overall, a good dinner, with just a few things that could be better. Ambiance: 8/10 Service: 10/10 Food: 9/10

Chicken fajitas were a letdown.

I was in Austin for SXSW and Maudie's Too came highly recommended by a former local, so I hopped a Lyft to have lunch. It totally wasn't worth the hassle and expense. I was hoping for tasty Tex-Mex since I was in Texas, but this place disappointed me in every way imaginable. The "dive bar" vibe is casual and comfortable, with a good-sized outdoor patio. We sat inside since it was a nice day and the patio was packed. This isn't a fancy atmosphere, and usually that's a sign of killer good food. The food here, though, is just okay. I'd more accurately call it "mediocre." We ordered queso and chips, chicken fajitas, enchiladas, and a margarita. Nothing was anything to write home about, and it was standard-issue fare. The fajitas looked like they came out of a bag, and the veggies didn't have that nice caramelized texture. The biggest travesty of all: the tortillas are not homemade. The black beans were disappointing, as was the queso (looked like something I could've made at home with a package of Velveeta). The enchiladas were the best thing about the meal. If you're seeking authentic style food with tons of spice and flavor, you're going to be disappointed in Maudie's Too. Even the margarita was forgettable. This wasn't the worst place I ate in Austin, but it's not somewhere I'd return. And yeah, the bathrooms are DISGUSTING and DIRTY.

I'd heard great things about Maudie's, but I can comfortably say I wouldn't go back. Although the service was incredible, the food was just not good enough to warrant a cleaned plate, let alone a return. The restaurant itself is quaint with fewer tables than I expected, but they have a great patio overlooking south Lamar close enough to see downtown. Unfortunately would not go back.

1/2 of my generous meal. Cheese enchiladas, rice and charro beans. Delicious!!

Stopped in here after a movie at Alamo for a take out order (because Jew Boys Sliders across the street was closed). This was an unexpected pleasant surprise, as my employer has brought in food for us from Maudie's, and I've never cared for it!! I ordered Josie's enchiladas and the meal was generous, delicious, perfection. Service was fast, friendly and a great value all around. Destined to be another favorite crave.

I received great, accommodating service here. I arrived before a rush of people. My meal hadn't arrived and I was ordering dessert. So I was at the table a while. I was feeling pressure from myself to speed up due to the number of people waiting, so I apologized to my server. She very kindly and *genuinely* told me that there was no reason to rush, I should enjoy my meal. No pressure for me to move along to free the table. My quesadilla was delicious! The chicken was cooked just right, and the cheese melted completely. There was a great deal of pico on the side provided as well. My sopapillas were fried perfectly and bigger than I anticipated! A very delicious way to end my meal. Finally, a chip and salsa comment--we all know we judge places on the quality of these! The chips were crunchy and non-greasy, and the salsa had a good burn to it. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Food was mediocre and service was poor. Upside - outdoor dining was plentiful. We had 2 types of vegetarian tacos and the quevos rancheros.

Bread pudding was delicious! Not overly sweet & the added white chocolate gives it that dazzle dazzle 2. Chocolate Espresso Brownie - perfection NOT THAT: 1. Banana cream pudding. Friendly staff overall. The food fell flat for almost all of us. The salads were fresh and good. However, the ribs were below average. Cornbread was stale and not tasty. Biscuits tasted more like firm bread and not at all flaky/soft. That seemed weird to all of us. Chicken fried steak was soggy and not crispy. Drinks were ok. Not quite sure why the food was subpar, but there were 10 of us who all agreed we wouldn't return for food. There is a swanky little cozy speakeasy in the basement that may be good? We didn't try that.

We absolutely recommend coming here and getting fajitas or enchiladas or Barbacoa quesadillas maybe all of the above if you bring enough people because it's all delicious! The restaurant itself is very well kept and clean. It does get a little bit loud, but that's only because it's always packed to the doors. Mama Betty's has a really fun outdoor patio space and always has great music playing. It's an awesome establishment to bring families kids Little League teams, office meetings whatever you want you won't disappoint anybody you bring. No matter who we have gotten as far as the wait staff they have all been extremely friendly, kind and helpful when it came to choosing something on the menu--everybody here has a wonderful and warm personality. They really have put together a home run of a restaurant and I hope that they stay around for a long time. Last, but not least the drinks are outstanding, and everything is very competitively and fairly priced. If you haven't tried it and are worried about it being packed come during the weekday at lunch.

Went on Sunday after Easter service because we were craving something a friend brought us during a…read morerecent meal train but felt it a bit lacking. First, the menu needs a rewrite for content and clarity. For example, buying fajitas doesn't list guacamole and based on size, single, for two and family you get more sides of rice or beans. There's no definition of how much actual meat you get and our server couldn't provide that information beyond a rough estimate. Second, the fajitas we got of family size and for two portions for 7 were not consistently cooked. We asked for medium rare and got about 25% at that with the ones in the center at a more well done. Again, the multiple tiny sides were more obnoxious than anything as it's legit beans and rice unless you want to upcharge. The cilantro lime rice tastes like nothing so skip that and go for abuelita rice which has a hint of flavor. Overall, the butter/gravy that go on the fajitas is the real winner but again a menu where you overbuy and misunderstand (that doesn't even list extras like guacamole or a simple small queso) was beyond frustrating. I would stick to them for one to possibly get a better cook.

I've driven by El Alma many times being in the Austin area, but I never went until last Thursday, and after surviving a brief monsoon, I was glad to get a few drinks and eat some good TexMex with my large party just before a wedding. The best way to describe El Alma is that it is TexMex that is Austinified. Everything feels a little more unique and special than your classic TexMex options. I started off with a Mezcal Margarita that put a little hair on my chest and got me going. My group ordered two of their Nachitos, which were these nice nachos. For my main entrée, I got 3 Al Pastor tacos on corn with a side of their rice and beans. Their pastor was served with pineapples, onions, and cilantro with limes on the side. They were great and I immediately crushed them all. I thought their rice and beans were pretty good as well and a step above the typical TexMex rice and beans. The server was pretty attentive throughout our whole visit, and I honestly have no complaints about what they had to offer. Pricing on the meal and drinks was pretty standard for Austin, and I didn't think anything really took me out of the experience. On top of that, for being in Barton Springs, there is quite a bit of parking. I would love to come back at some point in the future and hang out on their rooftop bar because that seems like a lot of fun. Shoutout to El Alma for being a TexMex oasis saving me from the MoPac traffic. RIYL: TexMex, but better than your average
