I really enjoyed Maudie's. While I've never been there before, it seems to be a local favorite just by the crowd we were there with. The serves were very nice and seemed to know their regulars well. We had the guacamole for an appetizer. It was nothing special. The salsa was also average. I had the beef fajitas and my partner had the enchiladas. Both were very good. The beef was tender, flavorful and lean. They used both green and yellow peppers which made me happy. In addition to dinner we did have a couple drinks. The Mexican martini was excellent but I was less impressed with the frozen margarita. For me, the margarita was a bit strong, I'm not sure how they flavor them but I suspect it was a mix because of the flavor. If you have room, make sure to try their ice cream. I can't remember the name but it has pecans, cinnamon. This was one of the better ice creams I've ever had. read more

We had a group of six come here the third night I was in town. I got the shrimp tacos as did my grandson, and my daughter ordered a couple of appetizers that we all split the price of. Everything was delicious! I really enjoyed the House Margaritas, which most of us got. The service (April) was excellent. Even the leftovers were very good over the next couple of days that it took me to finish them. I saw things on the menu that looked pretty good that I wouldn't mind going back to try if I get a chance. My daughter gave me part of her chicken tortilla soup and it was some of the best I've ever had, not super spicy like some are. I kind of wished I'd ordered it even though my shrimp tacos were delicious. The only hitch I saw was that for some reason none of us could figure out my grandson's shrimp tacos took forever to come out, long after everyone else's food had come. He's a great kid and not a complainer so he took it in good stride. The waitress, or maybe it was the manager, I can't remember, told us we wouldn't be charged for the shrimp tacos because they took so long. Evidently whoever was in charge of making sure that happened forgot to do it because I didn't realize until the next day when I looked at the receipt that we were charged for the shrimp tacos that we were told we would not be. Don't get me wrong, the shrimp tacos were delicious. It's just that if you say you are going to do something you should do it. No hard feelings though. We had the doggie w us and were looking for a quick place to eat. This definitely did the job. They have a small patio and an entrance on the outside of the restaurant so dogs are allowed! We ordered our food pretty quick and the queso didn't come, but we reminded them and it came fast after that. The fajitas were super! Kids had enchiladas and quesadillas and they enjoyed them. Quite busy on a Friday night. The place gets packed quick. If you can't find parking, try parking in the residential area. I enjoyed my Mango Margarita, perfect blend of tequila and mango. With that said, everything else was just ok. The service was meh. I felt like our server would just reach in front or between us all the time. Would have preferred if he said something prior to sticking his hand between me and my friend talking to place our food, give us the check, etc. Food was not that great, at least the Shrimp Quesadilla. The issue I had with the food was the shrimp itself. It tasted undercook and had a weird taste to it. Maudie's is some of my favorite Tex-Mex in Austin - especially this location. The staff is great, the food is consistent, and the alcohol is cheap. Can you want anything else? I've recently discovered the Chano Special since they redid their menus and voted off my favorite entree from the restaurant island. It's like a taco salad without all that annoying deep, fried tortilla. I typically get a side of rice to beef it up, because it's not too filling for larger appetites. I'm kind of a big fan of Mexican cuisine and I'd like to believe I know the difference between gooooood & bad texmex. For how the restaurant looked, I assumed it would've been more authentic but it didn't occur to me that it was TEXMEX, so that was my mistake. The food was below average in my opinion. There wasn't really much flavor in the food. We got fajitas and you could just tell it was lacking quality. From coloration of the food to how it actually tasted was just not to my liking. In the midst of Covid spike, staff and manager refused to allow outdoor seating. Only option is a porch which they have closed in with storm windows and no ventilation. When asked if we could do curbside and just sit at their many outdoor tables (due to newborn in tow, very crowded porch, and warm weather)...repeatedly told no for short staff. Maudie's is always my go-to when I'm in Austin and has been for years; even with an influx of new restaurant concepts. We started with margaritas. Their house margarita with a sangria swirl always hits the spot. Don't pass up the queso at Maudie's; epecially with chorizo! We ordered Fajitas for Two with chicken for the meal. Nice restaurant and atmosphere. Busy on Sunday so don't come in a hurry. The restaurant appeared clean and tidy. Bathroom was clean and they have gender-neutral bathrooms, but you can only see it if you look above the bathroom doors. I was going to give this four stars because I love the food but I have to give it three. It was basically the service at this place. I'm not a high maintenance person at all. If you look at my Yelp reviews I'm pretty generous with my stars and give plenty of four/five stars. I usually don't complain about the service. I went with my running group after our long run on Saturday. I know the waiter seemed annoyed with us. Maybe he wasn't used to serving a big group and forgot certain people's orders. I've lived in Austin for 8 years now, and I've just recently tried Maudie's for the first time. I had heard Maudie's and Trudy's compared to one another for the longest time, so I had to check it out for myself. We ordered "Maura's Bean Dip" to start and then I got "Rockin' Ruthann's Burritos". The bean dip was delicious...but HUGE! It consisted of the perfect mix of refried beans, queso, and pico de gallo. My only complaint: I wish someone had told us how big it was. I probably wouldn't have gotten such a big meal in addition to it. The burritos (2 of them) were tasty, too. Each flour tortilla was packed with an entire chicken breast's worth of simply-seasoned, shredded chicken. Then the two were served side by side smothered in enchilada sauce, onions, and cheese. I was only able to finish one because of the enormous amount of bean dip I consumed beforehand, but it was so good. I would've finished it if I could've. There's something about the magical combination of flour tortilla, enchilada sauce, and cheese that just does it for me. My gf got the taco dinner: 2 crispy tacos, rice, and beans. I had to try a little of everything! The taco meat was very juicy, which made eating the tacos a little more challenging. I really love Mexican rice, and this was some of the best I've had in Austin. It was really great! I didn't try the beans...mainly because I'd already consumed half of the bean dip. I'm sure they were good on their own, too. In conclusion, I would never in a million years have compared this place to Trudy's on my own. The food is more classic Tex-Mex, whereas Trudy's has a hippie flare. Though I currently live in San Antonio -- the World Capital of Tex-Mex Food -- my heart lies with Maudie's in Austin. Sorry, San Antonio. Simplicities like the table salsa -- smooth, spicy, plentiful -- and the queso -- rich, blended, varied, not simply a brick of Velveeta melted into Ro-Tel -- were outstanding. The spicy bean dip lived up to its name -- bright, garlicky, and without the taste of extra manteca (they call lard manteca in Mexico, right?) I'm not a big drinker, but the waitress -- very engaging, knowledgeable and energetic -- suggested I try the first margarita listed on the menu, which contained both Cointreau and Grand Marnier, as well as fresh squeezed grapefruit, lime, AND orange juice. It was simple and fresh, while still packing a punch. I had forgotten that margaritas didn't have to have that fake, corn syrup aftertaste. Ah, the fajitas. Juicy, plentiful, and the shredded cheese was actually hand shredded -- not from a pre-shredded bag. That was a nice touch. Took an hour to bring us water, never checked on us, forgot our sodas, didn't know what a bloody Maria was?????? So rude when we would as for simple things like our drinks we ordered hours ago.
