From what I understand, Matson is the more reliable of the freight services. I shipped my car from California to Hawaii. I wasn't able to pick the car up for a week after it got here for some reason, which sucked because that meant I had one more week of a rental car payment. When I got my car back, it had some funky smell in it that was NOT in there before. The people that work there are very friendly though. When it comes time to ship my car back, I will most likely use Matson again, as I hear that it is still the best way to go. read more

I paid to have my truck shipped and due to their online system flaw, my credit card was charged twice. I am relocating to the mainland from Hawaii and needed the room on my card to book hotels and rental cars. It has been 2 weeks since I notified them of the double charge and it is still on my card. I expressed to customer service how much this has inconvenienced myself and caused me a lot of stress over the move. I even told them I was surprised that after causing me so much trouble they have not even offered to discount my shipping cost and they still did nothing to make up for their mistakes. I was told today after 2 weeks that it may be another week before I see the $920 credit back to my card. The shipping part may be ok but the customer service is horrible. read more

Shipped my car from Las Vegas to Honolulu with Matson. Had zero issues dropping off in LA and picking up in HI. I read some reviews on how they didn't call to notify that the car had arrived. So I downloaded the app and tracked my vehicle. The car had arrived on a Sunday and the app let me know that it was being unloaded. Then Monday I checked again it said it was ready for pick up. The actual estimated pick up date was the next day, Tuesday. No one had called me but it was pretty early in the day so I just gave them a call to confirm if I was able to pick up my car. They said yes. No scratches or dents on the car was found. It was in great condition. Def recommend. read more

I had the most wonderful experience with Matson. I shipped my car from Long Beach Port in CA to the Honolulu Port. Calling for information was quick, easy and precise. I also called back to make my reservation and found Linda Richards to be extremely helpful and friendly with every twist and turn that developed for me! The car arrived earlier than they quoted me and it was so easy. I dropped it off "early" in the morning in Long Beach which seemed to be a key to making it easy on this end too. We shipped our Murano from Guam to Long Beach CA and it was a horrible ordeal. It took a month shipped Dec 22nd got to CA Jan 26th. We flew out to Long Beach to pick it up and arrived at 11:30. The people at the front desk said they had lunch at 12 so we needed to wait. 3 hours later had the car. The HORRIBLE part was that the car was significantly damaged during shipping. One of the engine mounts had come loose. Our mechanic checked it out and said it looked like the parking brake hadnd been put on during the shipping so the car which ruined the engine mount. It cost $500 to replace called matson and they said they would reimburse us. Would never answer calls and never returned any calls with the insurance department. They charge $2000 to ship it then customs $400 then they damage your car. So if anything does go wrong with the shipping process they will not help you at all even though it was clearly their blunder. AVOID them read more

Just dropped off my car in Honolulu to be shipped to LA. I am going through a broker to then have it transported to the East Coast as Matson only ships to the West Coast. I was in and out within 45 minutes. I already had a booking number from scheduling online just make sure you bring a signed letter from the bank or leasing agent if you do not have the title (the man in front of me forgot). The inspection takes about ten mins and you are on your way. Overall, a very easy experience. read more

For shipping cars to the islands, I am sure Matson is fine. For delivering shipments to local grocery stores, such as the Kailua Safeway, Matson's drivers can be terrible. The one I notice the most not only beeps when he backs up (I get that, it is automatic in reverse), but he honks three times each time he moves that thing. Since this Safeway abuts a residential area, the noise, at any hour of the day or night, is insufferable. Please instruct your drivers not to ruin the peace with the constant honking. read more

Getting the car on board was easier than I thought...getting it on time was another subject. If you plan to ship your car around the holidays, especially around Christmas, add another week. They gave me an estimated time of arrival, and when I expected it to be there around that time within a day or two. They tell me it stills has another week. I understand that it is a little slower around the holidays and people having lives, but Matson should have estimated that time in. I don't know, I'd probably would ship through them again all things considering, but just be aware and look into some rental car places in case something happens. Nothing to say about the condition of my vehicle yet because I don't have it, but hopefully I won't have to edit my review later. T. P.S. I've shipped a car out here twice. Once during my PCS move, shipping from Texas, and a second time from Seattle (wife's car). Both times the vehicles arrived early and without any issues; no additional scratches, dings, etc. The people that work at this Matson terminal were friendly and very helpful on both trips there. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the lack of courtesy call to let me know that the vehicle arrived. I was a little nervous about shipping my vehicle from California to Honolulu. But that nervousness soon went a way. I was expecting my car to get shipped out alot later than it was and to arrive alot later. But when I dropped it off on Friday wasn't expecting it to ship out until the next following Saturday due to the cut off day being on Wednesday. Come to find out they had room on the boat and they added my car to the shipment. I get a surprise text saying my car is ready for pick up, keep in mind I didn't know they added the car to the current ship cause of extra room. I wasn't expecting the car to arrive for almost another 2 weeks. But it arrived 2 weeks earlier than thought. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Was a great experience. Customer service was very helpful and process is very easy with little confusion. Car came back in mint condition and to top it off, they gave me a free car wash voucher! Than a week later we decided to ship our household goods through Matson on a 20ft container. Our container arrived on our door step as scheduled also. The representatives that assisted us from Matson are all very knowledgeable staff and they also will help you track your container if you ask them. I know a lot more about shipping by container than I ever have before. I had a very good experience with Matson. I requested that Matson ship my car from Oakland to Honolulu in January of this year. It arrived with a broken windshield, lower left driver's side. About a 10 inch crack shaped like an S. No problem, I thought. I filed a claim through the proper channels, expecting Matson would compare before and after photos that clearly showed this damage happened en route. CLAIM DENIED!! Matson looked a the grainy "before" photo they took prior to accepting my car, found a spec of dirt in the general location of the crack, stated that was a preexisting chip in the windshield, and thus are not responsible for the crack. What a crock of bull!! Steer clear of this company, if you have a choice. $340 dollars later my windshield has been replaced, but on my nickel. Shame, shame, shame on Matson. read more

i chose matson because i've had friends and relatives ship with them with no problems. i'm not sure if it's just a sign of the times but they've certainly gone way down hill since they've marked up their prices. first of all, this was a car being shipped from Hawaii to the mainland. i was told and assured by them that if i brought my car to them by Monday it would make it on the next ship going out that Friday/Saturday. when i arrived they posted a sign up saying that their rates had changed starting the day before (Sunday, when they weren't even open) and that instead of the booking rate I had originally received the month before when i made the reservation for $975, i would now need to pay $1055, when i showed them i had the original booking, they said that it was too bad and they couldn't do anything about it; so i asked the woman if they normally do this ("change prices without notice") and she said that i should have received a notice of some type which i can assure you i certainly did not receive. anyhow, this got straightened out with a call to customer service AFTER i payed the inflated rate and they supposedly refunded the card. but this is only the beginnings of my troubles. so i dropped my car off on the 7th of January and flew into california on the 15th expecting to stay a week with a friend of mine, then picking my car up and leaving. i checked the tracking on matson's website every so often noticing that nothing is changing. finally i call them and they inform me that "for some reason" my car did not make it onto the ship it was suppose to be on and that they had to put it on the next one leaving a full week later. so now my visit with my friend just got extended for another week. i call them again a few days later because my status on their tracker still says my car will be there on the 22nd, i'm told that since my car didn't leave til the 17th that it would be approx. 10 days and to expect it by the 27th. so i call again a few days later just to get a status check, now i'm informed that the 27th is wrong and that the car will be arriving on the 30th, i'm told this by various matson representatives. i e-mailed their service department expressing my concern and to let them know that the only reason i have any updates at all is because i'm the one calling them and that they have made no effort in alerting me of any of these changes. i receive a call from a very nice and understanding employee that tells me that they can reimburse me if i would like to rent a car of similar value to what i have shipped and that my car, again, would be ready for pick up by wednesday the 30th. it's not tuesday and i called them again just to make sure that my car indeed would be ready (i'm staying in San Diego and the drive to Long Beach isn't a short one, so i wanted to make sure). now i'm told my car will definitely not be ready tomorrow and that it should be Friday for sure. this is absolutely ridiculous, from Jan. 7 when they first received my car all the way to Feb. 1 is 3 days short of 4 weeks, an entire month! granted, they are paying for the rental car, but what in the world explains their lack of communication and information. 4, count'em, 4 DIFFERENT DATES THAT THEY TOLD ME MY CAR WOULD BE READY. this is unheard of and i honestly cannot believe their incompetence. i would never recommend this company to anyone ever and if i had to do it all over again, i would either ship with Horizon or would have sold my car before even leaving so i wouldn't have had to deal with this nightmare. the amount of emotional stress has been quite a lot for me and others that are being affected by all of this and in the end it's an enormous waste of my time and money that i'll never get back. even though the friend i'm visiting is a very good friend of mine, after nearly 3 weeks of staying here, i have to say that i certainly feel i've outstayed my welcome. if you have the option, i urge you to ship with another company, this is too much of a headache for anyone to have to deal with. edit 1- i forgot to mention, i've asked numerous employees why my car didn't make the first ship that it was assigned to, their answer...'they have no idea'... edit2 - another reason they gave me for my car taking so long was because, again, "for some reason", the second ship that had my car on it was arriving a full day late, once again with no explanation. read more

I'm pissed! I shipped my car to Seattle from Hawaii and received my car damaged. Not major but definitely from the shipping. I receive my car, notice the scrapes and scratches, so the guy was very nice and marked the damages on the receiving documents, took pics, etc. I was then advised to get 2 estimates and send them into claims. I was really surprised at the cost of the estimates because apparently one little bit of damage on a panel created work on the entire panel as well as some adjacent panels due to color matching etc. Well, so I send the paperwork to Matson and what do they do? Send a check for roughly half the damage and consider it done. Included in the paperwork is an estimate from a repair shop in...wait for it...Hawaii! So why don't you pick up my car, get it repaired in Hawaii, and ship it back to Seattle! Wow, really? Even better, when I call the girl in the claims department she tells me that because there were some scrapes/scratches on the car originally (and they happened to be on the same side as their damage) that this is why they are giving me half the money for the cost of the repair. Bullshit! I did not get an estimate based on my "stuff" in fact I specifically told the repair shop which damages were mine and to not include them in that estimate. So basically your car has to be immaculate for them to be up and up with you. Matson has been a monopoly for years, and it shows. Disgusted! read more

Had to ship my 4runner through a third party and they used Matson. I arrived way before they opened and there was already a group of people waiting for them to open. When they finally opened they would ask who is shipping cars or picking up. If you are shipping cars you need to go to the building to the left which isn't stated on the door so if you haven't ever been there and need to ship that's just a heads up for you. So after they told us that we walked over to the other building. There was already 3 people in line ahead of us. I was so worried that this was going to take a while because we had another appointment to be at by 10. Each person only took a few mins and within less than 10 mins they were already to me. Handed the gentleman at the window all of the paperwork he needed. He made copies got copies of both id's (husband and mine) and printed out the paper we needed to take to the next window in order to pay for the shipment. Walked up to the cashier handed her the paperwork from the window we were just at she asked for payment and in less than 5 mins we were out of there going through the gate to drop off my 4runner. Went inside that building (which I think the a/c was broken) up to that counter and they said have a seat we will be right with you. They called my husbands name he went out with them to inspect my 4runner. From the start process to the end process we were out in 30 mins! If I could give ZERO stars, I would. My vehicle sustained damage during shipment that I did not notice until I left the Matson lot. The driver side mirror had been broken while Matson had custody of the vehicle. Someone had taped the mirror in place and within hours of my retrieving my vehicle from Matson, the tape began to pull away. I did EVERYTHING the Matson claims department insisted I accomplish with the submission of my claim. They denied my damges, stating in their official response that "the tape used to hold the mirror in place was visible and not of a concealed nature". If that was the case, why did the Matson representative who accompanied me on my walk-around of the vehicle not notice it either?! And even if I did not notice the damage initially, it's apparent the damage occured while Matson had custody; are you going to deny a $488 claim because of a technicality?! When the safe, undamaged movement of the vehicle was YOUR responsibility?! Extremely poor customer service. Shame on you Matson. Shame on you. I don't understand why all the negative reviews! I shipped my car from Honolulu to Long Beach, in fact just picked it up, and my car is in perfect condition, exactly as I gave it to them. And believe me, I love my car and it was like new with only about 8000 miles and not a scratch or dent on it so I was so worried when I parted with it. When I walked up to my car and saw it for the first time, I was so happy. Not only did it arrive on time as promised, they called me promptly to let me know it was ready for pick up, and it was in great condition. The whole process was simple, the workers who helped me were all very kind and helpful, quick and easy (as much as car shipping can go), nothing to complain about. And I shipped my car about 13 years ago from California to Hawaii and at that time I remember paying about $950, and this time it was $1100. Their prices have hardly gone up and they charge the same as all others (I.e. horizon, pasha). They ship your car in an enclosed container, although not individually, but it's covered so your car isn't exposed to the elements. There is Matson app that lets you track the status of the car, or you can do it online. I would highly recommend using Matson!! read more

Could not be any less impressed. I shipped my brand new Mercedes from Maryland to Hawaii and back again and each time it came back with a ridiculous amount of damage - an actual chunk out of the windshield, many scratches, a tear in the rear bumper, scratches even inside the car on the upholstery, and some sort of acid which dripped on the front eating away the paint to name only a few issues. It looked like it had been in an abandoned garage in a war zone rather than in the hands of a company paid almost $2000 to take what should have been impeccable care of what they were charged with. The car went from perfect to what an appraiser described as a car in decent condition. After trying to contact Matson many times I received a reply after 3 weeks denying most of the damage and challenging me with "attached pictures." Which were not attached of course. Finally someone came back a week later (with no pictures) and said they would settle for $800 what had been estimated at $3500 in damage and this was only the first time shipping. I didn't know then that I could follow up with my insurance for a not at fault claim, which I am doing this time. DO NOT SHIP WITH MATSON read more

I LOVE MY CAR... a Mercedes Clk 500 convertible and my son has a late 98 BMW that He Loves and keeps like new and has spent more on one of those stereos then the car is worth lol.... This was a first time experience...so Upon arriving there I had no clue where to go and the signs were worthless. We went to one office and then were directed to another twice. Then again when we had to bring our car in for the inspection before it was handed over we had no idea where to go., When asking someone they pointed to the left saying over there. There was nothing "over there", but around the corner we found what looked like bays to pull your car into and guessed that was where we needed to go. When we went into the office and up to the counter the lady was nice and we explained we were new and needed guidance. She told us to sit and our inspector would be out. Then out walked what became our inspector that had a full mask over her face, Her name I think was Leialeh You only could see her eyes. I heard my name said but had no idea where it was coming from...then figured it may be her but she was walking out the door. She stopped when I was not following her and said my name again. Upon following her I asked her a question about the spelling of my name and she quickly told me it was not her department. If she needs to wear a mask for some reason fine but greet the customer without the mask and honestly greet the customer period. Very unprofessional. They obviously have been around for a long time and know what they are doing...however I feel they need to be more aware of the needs of people NOT going through companies who use them all the time. So I got orders to move to the main land and the process to ship the car with your own money is and great. They were very friendly and the price wasn't too bad 1100 to California. With that being said the one I shipped through the military was a pain! Much more paper work and they want your car "field day ready", they were extremely rude to me at the inspection part. Which is why I find it weird that there is a night and day difference between paying yourself or being associated with shipping on orders. I just don't get how so many people can be like that. I'm giving them three stars - though it's more like 3 1/2: their staff in Long Beach was efficient as possible and the staff seemed to take care around the vehicles on their lot. The service in Honolulu is a bit spottier. The car was originally promised on June 8. I hadn't received a call so I called them as was told the car wasn't available for pick up. I asked when would it be as it was promised today. The woman I spoke with would not give an approximate day or time but just said you'll have to call back. I understand that's not entirely their fault but it's not the best customer experience. I called again the next day but the car was still not available. Finally on the 10th a check of the mobile app early in the morning indicated the car was available to be picked up. Up to this point it had no updates other than the vehicle had arrived. I headed over to their office around 8:30am. I was greeted immediately and after confirming my ID was told it would be brought up for me to inspect. Another employee came out and said as the car was quite dirty she was having it washed for me. After an inspection (they won't shadow you so you're free to take your time) I didn't notice any dings or scratches that weren't already there. They were quite cheerful in person and the whole process took about 30 minutes. They also provided instructions to get your car inspected, registered, etc. along with a coupon for a free car wash. They were not very busy so YMMV if you go around lunch or later in the day. All in all I'd use Matson again but wish they would stick to their promised date or at least offer some better guidance than "just call back." I didn't receive the courtesy call but as I picked up early in the day they may not have had a chance to call me first. read more

Made a booking to ship my pickup from Hawaii to Long Beach, California. It was scheduled to be loaded May 20th with a delivery date of the 28th and be available for pick up on May 31st. That was the plan. So I bought my plane ticket to arrive in LA on the 1st of June so I could drive my truck to Chicago where I'm moving to. Things went down hill from there. They call me on the afternoon of the 20th, the day it's supposed to be loaded mind you, to tell me that it's not going to make that shipment. Why, I ask them? Because there's not enough room. When will it get there? Sometime around the 10th of June. I'm supposed to be closing on my house, in Chicago, on the 6th. I scheduled the closing for the 6th because Matson assured me that my truck would be available on the 31st of May so I could drive from LA to Chicago in time for the closing. This leaves me with three expensive options: 1- Change my plan ticket for a very expensive last minute flight to Chicago so I can make the closing. Then fly back to LA on the 10th to get my truck then drive home, again. 2- Buy an expensive last minute plane ticket from LA to Chicago so I can make the closing. Then fly back to LA on the 10th to get my truck then drive home, again. 3- Push the closing to the 16th. Stay at a hotel in LA for ten days. The cheapest decent hotel in LA is $150.00 a night. Then get my truck and drive to Chicago for the closing. All these options are at my expense. When I asked Matson if I was going to be compensated for this expensive inconvenience, their answer was, I had the option of getting an upgrade to a priority release date of June 6th. Wait for it..... for an extra $700.00. Their only other option was to cancel the shipment. They are the ONLY shipping company between Hawaii and The Mainland. You want to talk about a Monopoly? They have your balls in their hand and if they get bored or if you piss them off, all they have to do is squeeze. If I ever have to do this again, which I pray to God I don't, I would rather sell my car than go through this bull crap again. read more

Matson is the only company which ships from the mainland to Hawaii. There are a lot of third party shippers which will ship your car to Hawaii but these companies also use Matson. Between myself and my family, we've shipped several vehicles from Arizona to Hawaii over the last decade. However, all it takes is one bad experience. In early August (2013), my husband and I shipped another car to Honolulu. We picked up our vehicle and took it home by the end of August. The next day my husband went out to run errands and the car ran out of oil. It turned out that the oil cooler was badly damaged during shipment. The pressure built up and all the motor oil had exploded out of the front of the cooler. We later found out that the entire engine had to be replaced and it would cost almost $20k. We filed a claim online with Matson within 24 hours of picking up the car. We had not heard anything after 3 days so we drove down to the Matson office at Sand Island. The customer service person had given us the phone number for the claims person and her email address. We filed more paper work, sent it to the claims person, got a receipt confirmation email and then we heard nothing for the next 3 months. We followed up with a phone call and email at least once a week and also leave messages on the general claims line. We had been trying to avoid using our insurance company but after being ignored for months we finally contacted our insurance company. The claims adjuster contacted us for a statement and had no problem contacting Matson's claims person. She called him back immediately. She claimed that Matson was not at fault since we drove 50 miles on the car and that we probably shipped the car damaged. Our insurance claims adjuster sided with us because it is possible to drive many miles with a damaged oil cooler and the car is in mint condition. I'm really disappointed with the lack of professionalism of such a large company. Matson didn't even bother to deny our claim; they flat out ignored our claim and hoped we would go away. Unfortunately, with the towing, the replacement of the oil cooler and a new engine, this problem is a little too expensive to ignore. Even with the insurance, we're still out $5k for the deductible and an additional $2.5k for the difference in replacing the engine. read more

Wow...what a nightmare trying to get Matson to settle an auto shipment claim. My car was in PERFECT condition (like new) when they received it in Long Beach on Mar 14th. It finally arrived and was available for pick up on April 8th. The damage wasn't anything terrible, just about $2,000 of cosmetic paint scratches and nicks. I noted the damage at pick up and I filed my claim on 27 Mar with Westside Fender (Matson's choice for damage estimates). They were great, they gave me my damage estimate the same day...excellent! They also send the claim directly to the Matson claims dept. Senseless damage to a perfect condition Mercedes is bad enough, but NOW the true nightmare begins. The Matson website says it takes "3-4 weeks" to settle the claim...OK, I was good with that. (Looking at what they did to my car, I imagined they are quite busy.) After 5 weeks I tried to talk to someone at Matson claims (called every number possible). No answers...only voicemail every single time. Each time I gave all my info and let them know I just wanted to ensure they had received the claim from Westside fender (Westside confirmed it was sent the same day they gave it to me). Weeks and weeks pass with no returned calls or emails. I even tried Matson Corp Headquarters. Bottom line - I did not receive my check in the mail until yesterday, 31 Aug. By my count, that's TWENTY-THREE weeks (157 days)! In the meantime, I had to pay for the repairs out of pocket since I didn't know if or when Matson would ever pay my claim.
