This bakery, with its wonderful baker-owners, Julia and Ian, is probably the best thing to happen…read morein YV since we first moved up into Burns Canyon 17 years ago. The bread, pastries (sweet and savoury!), cookies, cake (carrot!) and then also their amazing sandwiches, well, it is all to die for. During my 40+ minute drive down from the canyon I am thinking the whole time, 'What should I get today?' And so looking forward to eating it. About the sourdough bread (everything here is sourdough of course)... I have been baking sourdough bread, using the same starter, for the last 16 years (along with waffles and pancakes and biscuits) -- inspired by what I first found at San Francisco's Tartine and soon after at Luna -- and Luna's bread continues to inspire me (I wish I could bake it so perfectly every time). If you are in YV, Joshua Tree, Pioneertown (on your way to and from Pappy and Harriet's maybe?) and vicinity, do not miss the opportunity to visit Luna Sourdough Bakery.

Ok. I can't believe I'm gonna say this (because who complains about too much food), but. There was way too much brie. Like, it was a whole brick o' brie in it. Just...too much. I think it would have been perfect with like, half of it. Again, I can't believe I'm complaining about generosity, but there you have it. Hey Luna, trying to save y'all some resources (or something). Otherwise, things were delicious, as expected. Their water container, which I guess has an intricate filtration system, takes a LONG time to filter water after it's filled. We parked on the street, as the parking lot was very small, but there is plenty of street parking. Bathroom is singular, single-stalled, and not gendered.

The landscape around it is a hypnotizing blend of desert, mountains, high plains...with towering cacti and rocky terrain that seem to go on forever. It's the perfect setting for those seeking thrills and a taste of the unconventional. As I wandered around the restaurant, inside and outside, I couldn't help but notice the eclectic mix of people who gather here. There were the hardcore adrenaline junkies, decked out in full gear and ready to conquer the next climbing expedition in Joshua Tree. Then you have the nature lovers, clad in earthy tones who seem at peace with themselves and the world (OMMmmmmmmmmmmm.....) and then you have the free spirits (ME ME ME ! hahahaaa) with the interesting hair and carefree attitudes. Overall, Yucca Valley Outpost is a fantastic Food and People Watching destination for anyone looking to break free from the constraints of modern society and experience the world on the "other side"... and before I forget... the food is delicious !

I had a veggie omelette, substituted egg whites, and my husband had the classic eggs, pancake, and bacon. The coffee was filled regularly and was good and strong. I told her I wanted an omelet and two seconds later asked again. The iced coffees were made in a hurry and looked as such and lacked flavor. We got in and sat around 1240 and had waited a staggering 50 minutes without any food nor anyone coming to check in on us and see if we were doing alright. When we finally questioned our order, it was revealed that one of their cooks quit that morning... To which I feel like you should probably disclose those details to your customers up front don't you think? Long after we were about to leave, she still asked if we can wait 5 minutes more to finish to which finally was the last straw and we walked out. On our way out, we took notice that we were the only ones not eating....

The turkey, while good, wasn't freshly carved, which took a little away from the "special" feel. And while the breakfast sando was light and all alone on the plate, the way the mayo fused the flavors together was delicious. But I do wish the beverage fridge had prices listed so I wasn't surprised at the register. The restaurant, while it's a bit tricky to find on the side of a building, inside is a modern space. It's spotless and very clean. The aesthetic is minimalist and if it were just you, it could feel a bit cold, if not for the steady buzz of activity behind the counter. There were three staff members who moved swiftly. As I watched I was impressed with their efficiency as the kept things running smoothly. When we entered an hour before closing, we made the mistake to sit and pause to look over the menu. It was a mistake because it seemed like the front door kept swinging open as wave after wave of hungry visitors poured in. My guess is these folks were all returning from Joshua Tree National Park. In fact, it felt like nearly everyone there had just come from the park. The business concept appears thoughtfully geared toward travelers, particularly those with a bit of disposable income and a discerning palate. Overall, this is a certified foodie stop: quality over quantity: taste over filling up.
