Frontier Cafe is one of those rare high desert spots that sits right in the middle of one of the best little shopping stretches in Yucca Valley and still feels easy and local. I honestly don't think I've made a single desert trip without stopping in at least once. Part of it is the location. Acme 62 and Hoof + Horn are both literally right next door and both great for gifts that say "I went to the desert" without going full souvenir shop. Pioneer Crossing Antiques is also nearby and was sadly closed this Wednesday, but I normally stop in whenever it's open. The proprietors are awesome and I always find something unique to take home. Food-wise, the lox bagel was a standout. Great ratio of cream cheese, capers, dill, thin-shaved red onion, plus a little side salad of arugula and radish that actually tasted fresh instead of feeling like decoration. The yogurt parfait was small but mighty, layered with berries and granola and substantial enough to feel like breakfast. Easy seating, dog friendly, and plenty of sandwiches and salads if you're not in a bagel mood. Came down from LA for a quick trip and was able to try this coffee shop out! The atmosphere was nice and it was a huge area that allows people to eat their breakfast and drink their coffee without being confined to a small space like how some coffee shops are back home. The service was quick for us ordering 4 drinks. The espresso pulls weren't too sour and the coffee wasn't too overly sweet. I did try their maple banana cold foam but it basically sunk to the bottom before I could try it individually. Overall decent coffee sho would go again if i'm in the area. read more

Frontier was a second option after going to joshua tree coffee co not knowing they closed at 1pm on thursday. We only ordered drinks here. I was skeptical about the matcha so I went for a latte instead. They don't necessarily have a specialty drinks menu they just list the different kinds of drinks along with different flavors they have. We chose a salted maple latte and a pumpkin latte. In total honesty they're not good, they're watery/milky. I can't really taste the salted maple flavor anywhere, the pumpkin flavor is sort of there but if anything it just tastes like chai. I guess all of the amazing reviews are for the food which I didn't have. Positives were that the drinks came out quickly within 5 minutes of ordering. Prices are also very affordable compared to other places but I guess you get what you pay for because the quality wasn't very good. Definitely anticipate a wait on weekends; we were fortunate to not have a big line when we came in but after we ordered there was a huge line that formed. Frontier cafe is a conveniently located cafe on 29 Palms Hwy with your standard cafe fare as well as some gluten free and vegan options. I came here for an iced coffee on the way back home to LA. The flavors for lattes were so good! I had the salted maple latte with banana cold foam and I LOVED it. I wish I could go back for that any time! How has I never been here? Granted it doesn't have a lot of curb appeal and the inside isn't fancy. Order at the counter and they bring you your food. Sandwiches, salads, drinks. But, they know how to cook! The Vegan BLT and the Tuna Melt were near perfect (and I have had my fair share of both). Good bread, good mayo, good "bacon", flavorful tuna, good cheese, heirloom tomatoes.... Seriously, you will not find better, anywhere. It was very smoky, maybe a little too much liquid smoke, and salty. While I know it is trying to emulate bacon, it wasn't crispy at all. It was just kind of wet and salty, mot my favorite. It was very tasty crumbling it into the potato salad though, I would recommend doing that. Potato Salad: 3/5 Flavor was decent and very traditional. I'm not a big fan of celery so I was glad this did not have any. The dressing tasted fine, but it was strangely separating/curdled. Also, the potatoes tasted old, you know when they get kind of leathery and shriveled from being in the fridge for too long. Ambiance: Casual. It has a desert hipster kind of vibe. We came here around 9:45 AM on a Friday, and there were about 5-6 people in line ahead of us, so the wait to order was around 15 minutes. The café was packed with people working, playing chess, eating, and catching up with friends, which gave it a really lively community vibe. What I ordered: *Cold Brew : delicious and refreshing. They also have a self-serve station next to the counter with honey, simple syrup, sugar, and other add-ins so you can customize your drink. *Green Dream: light, refreshing, and a really delicious sandwich. The employees were extremely friendly and upbeat, and the service attitude was phenomenal. They also have a complimentary ice water station, which was a nice touch. There are plenty of seats inside, but because it was so busy, all the tables were taken when we arrived. There are also a few covered tables outside, which is where we ended up sitting. It actually worked out great because there was a nice breeze. The only downside was that it took over 30 minutes to receive our order, which felt a bit long considering what we ordered. Busy but spacious spot with filling food (4/5 Green Stars) I arrived at what was probably close to peak time - around 10 AM on Sunday. The line was quite long and the food took a good while to arrive. I would have been wondering if it was forgotten except that I could see that everyone's food was taking around 15 mins to come out. I didn't mind - I had my coffee and excellent people-watching entertainment. The clientele ranges from locals in cowboy gear, rainbow gear, or tats and baseball hats, to tourists, UCLA hotties in faux fur, and geeks on laptops (that's me). The contrast is pretty funny. I appreciated that the server at the counter took a minute to explain that they only use veggie sausage in their sandwiches so there's no chance of a mix-up. My breakfast sandwich (veggie sausage, egg, and cheddar) was very filling and the side of veggie bacon (seitan) was tasty but salty. (Pro-tip: take some veggie bacon for your hike as salty snacks are good to replenish your electrolytes). The coffee was just okay - I just had a drip and it seemed over-roasted to me (I've heard others say this about beans from Joshua Tree Coffee). A medium/light toast would be better, in my opinion. Prices are reasonable and there's a nice mix of cool inside seating and sun or shade outside. Props to the friendly staff. I'm giving the Frontier Café 4.5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on the following: * A large amount of the menu is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. * It's actually a genius move to just replace regular sausage with veggie version and make that standard in the breakfast sandwich. It's an excellent way to show people who might otherwise never try the veggie option, that meat substitutes are pretty good these days. * Cool homemade items like vegan bacon (seitan) and vegan cookies. * Coffee beans are organic - from Joshua Tree Coffee, I believe, since they sell their beans there too. JT coffee is above-average in terms of environmental impact. * Food is served in compostable trays. * I like the little details like fair trade certified sugar and the interesting United Sodas drinks for sale. * Inclusive place that feels welcoming to everyone and, through this, brings people together. * Room for improvement: ditch the beef. A great menu with savory and sweet breakfast and bakery items. Order at the counter and then find a table, fast casual restaurant. Lots of seating but it's also a very popular spot (we went during Thanksgiving week) so you might still end up having to wait to find a place to sit. Tuna melt and chick pea wrap were my favorite of what we tried. My kids liked the caprese sandwich but found the regular grilled cheese "too cheesy" (they are very generous with the cheese!).
