    seafood tartare appetizer plate
    Helena Q.

    Not an Italian food expert, but I do know good food when I eat it, and MaterMatuta is absolutely delicious. Plating and creativity on the dishes made our meal memorable, service was warm and friendly, ambiance modern and intimate, and the food made me wish I lived in Rome. Everything we tried was seafood centered and really fresh. We tried the seafood tartare plate, cod tempura, lobster pasta, shrimp pasta, black ravioli, and asparagus wrapped cod. Honestly I'd get everything again aside from maybe the asparagus wrapped cod. Felt like we were dining at a Michelin star restaurant, but without the Michelin star price. Lots of locals also. Definitely make your way over here while you're in Rome!

    THE best restaurant I've been to in a long time. I don't often offer up 5 star ratings to restaurants, partly because there's always room for improvement and partly also some restaurants miss on crucial non-food beats, such as service, cleanliness, and price. MaterMatuta clearly thrives on all points and in the 1.5 days we spent in Rome, we came back again the following day for lunch. The menu is fairly small compare to Italian restaurants in the area, however out of the six dishes we got in the two visits, every single one blew us out of the water. Our appetizers (layer of shellfish, grilled octopus) were super delicious, with a fairly healthy portion. Our entrees (lobster pasta, tuna steak, beef filet, fish pasta) were equally amazing. We really thought ordering random dishes could get us trouble, but definitely not at MaterMatuta. For example, my beef filet was better than some of the best $60-80 steaks in the US and the price is fairly reasonable. One warning: you won't be super full from the meal but you'll be around 7/10 full. That is the perfect amount since they have wonderful desserts (or surrounding areas have plenty of gelato choices). Pro tips: you can make a reservation online at thefork.it (even if you don't know Italian, you should be able to guess your way through a reservation), or call. Their English is sufficient. Don't hesitate and come here QUICKLY!

    Amazing food.

    So after days of eating nothing but pizza and carbs we went looking for something different and little did we know we'd end up having one of the best meals of our life. This place is incredible, from the food, wine selection and service, it ranks up there with the best meals I've ever had. We had the oysters, fish carpaccio (3 ways), octopus (hands down the best I've ever had, so tender), duck, and the dessert, every bite was perfect. It's these moments that stick with you long after the meal.

    Very good service and well cooked food. The oysters are so fresh and lobster pasta were tasty.

    Was here with another couple on a Wednesday night. It wasn't packed but I believe reservations are recommended. We had a wonderful dinner and liked every dish here. The place is non-traditional. More of a twist to a modern Italian cuisine. Definitely more seafood vibe but did offer some meat dishes as well. We over-ordered as portions were surprisingly large. Even the appetizers. My husband ordered the monkfish and was one by one brought out 4 or 5 different takes on it. Some in crude form and some cooked. All very tasty. I had a scallop appetizer. Presented on a dish that resembled a painters pallet. It had three different sauces for paint. It was good but nothing mind blowing. My friend had an octopus appetizer. It was enormous and looked nice and caramelized from the grill. I did not taste it. My husbands gnocchi, made from purple potatoes, were the best I have ever tasted. They were so light, they melted in your mouth. I thought the truffle oil was just slightly overwhelming to the delicate gnocchi but still, I was jealous and wish I had ordered it instead! I don't remember what my second dish was so I don't think it was mind blowing. We ordered a platter of grilled seafood that was suggested for 2 people but the 4 of us easily shared it and barely finished. It had grilled fish, scallops, calamari, langoustines and probably other I cannot recall. For dessert my husband and I shared a pistachio semifredo it was really good. Service was great and fast. Overall a great experience and I would recommend this restaurant when in Rome and looking for something other than the classical Italian.

    Grilled octopus! YUM A+++++

    One of the best restaurants in Rome! I don't speak any Italian and this restaurant was far from major touristy places but the server welcomed me and explained the menu to me in both Italian and English. (I hate those pushy restaurants in touristy places like on streets near Trevi Fountain or Spanish Steps) Very welcoming, friendly atmosphere, attentive staff (I was here for lunch and my server was the only one serving 5-6 tables), and most importantly, the food was amazing!!!!!! (Please get the grilled octopus and pistachio semifredo) Their food presentation/decor was so pretty and picture-worthy!! Highly recommended restaurant if you are traveling to Rome!!!!

    Pistache ice with orange something and berries... dreaming of that tonight :)

The edamame we had was soft and boiled/spiced to perfection. Originally we were just going to get a roll and a bowl but after trying the food we immediately got another roll. The staff was a whole new level of mind blowing. To start the waiter made us feel exactly where we belonged (even though we were a little underdressed for a classier restaurant). You could've just sat there and watched the bar tender all night, she looked like she was a professional I wouldn't want anyone else making me drinks. The atmosphere of the whole bar embodied a classic American jazz bar, even the other people and tables we were by were friendly and really added to the whole experience. Was very well worth the price and couldn't recommend any other restaurant.

    A jazz club for American tourists…read more Okay, there was one Australian lady and a few Chinese. Everyone else was American. Prices are sky-high because this is a soak the tourist situation. Alexanderplatz which is the premiere jazz club in Rome charges $18 euros for a month membership - no cover after that - and $12 per drink. So once you have paid your monthly cover charge, you can hear all the jazz you want for free - or if need be for $12 euros a drink At Alexanderplatz, the performances are legendary with some of the most innovative and technically amazing musicians in Rome. We dropped over $150 euros at Gregory's. We got a perfectly reasonable yeoman guitarist. But nothing like the artistic lions that routinely perform over at Alexanderplatz. Now to be fair, we had dinner at Gregory's and we never eat at Alexanderplatz. The standard "sushi dinner" was perfectly reasonable yeoman sushi. There was so little of it that we both had to order a la carte dishes afterwards. The extra extras seriously expanded the final tab. * * * One argument in Gregory's favor: their bar is extraordinary. The bar at Alexanderplatz is mediocre. Gregory's charges top dollar for its bar offerings, but what they mix and what is in their bottles is worth every single euro they ask for. I would be perfectly happy to just go to the bar, and order a few premium beverages. I would hear my wallet cry. But I would know that I was drinking supremely well in return for my investment. Fortunately, the bar is downstairs from the club. I would not have to put up with the shenanigans in the club. * * * The problem with the club is the crowd. At most, one third of the customers are actually there to listen to jazz. The room is filled with tourists taking selfies. There are also hot-daters playing snuggle-buns. Many of them will leave mid-set so they can go back to the hotel. Gregory's is less about the music and more about selling happy memories of Rome. * * * Alexanderplatz gets a mostly Italian crowd. You are looking as musicians, music critics, academics, and all purpose artsy types - as well as normal Italian human beings who just want to hear fine music. The music is taken very very seriously. Yeah, there are usually two or three tables with good time Charlies who are doing the phone recording, party hearty thing. But this is 8% of the audience at Alexanderplatz as opposed to 70% of the audience at Gregory's. To be fair to the crowd at Gregory's, the music at Alexanderplatz is simply better. The jazz at Alexanderplatz is capable of transfixing even philistines with tin ears. Gregory's jazz doesn't put that much on the table. But the crowd at Alexanderplatz sets me up for listening to mystic, complex music with the highest level of attention and aesthetic receptiveness. The crowd at Gregory's just gets me irritated. * * * If you are in Rome with a hot date, go to Gregory's. Be prepared to shell out the bucks. * * * If you are in Rome with someone who can truly appreciate once-in-a-lifetime musical experiences, take them to Alexanderplatz. After you talk about the music for half an hour after the concert, You can still go back to the hotel. Just figure that the hotel will be the second best part of the night.

I ordered a split of Bolero even though it's hot, I wanted it with my gnocchi with black truffles. The gnocchi and the wine were both delicious. I also had ordered a salad to start. When they brought out my salad, it was huge and I remarked about how big it was and he said oh would you like a smaller one and I said, yes please. I hadn't even touched the bowl. A few minutes later, he brought a much smaller much better sized bowl filled with crunchy radicchio, carrots, arugula, and other nice veggies. I was grateful because I couldn't even finish that one. There's no way I could've done the large one. The service was excellent. They were very kind and courteous, and went out of their way to be helpful more than once . As I was leaving it was pouring rain. My waiter didn't want me to go out into the rain without an umbrella and I said I was fine and I laughed that I wasn't made of sugar, most could attest to that. He smiled and said just a minute and he went back somewhere towards the kitchen and dug around and came back out with an umbrella. Talk about customer service so I had a lovely lovely walk back home in the rain it's been very hot here so it felt delightful. I returned the umbrella yesterday evening. I will happily go back there again before I leave.
