Late night snack as we arrived from LAX, and made our way to N Hollywood. We split a pasta/spaghetti dish and a nice green salad. Both were excellent. No bread but they did bring us a crostini. Hard to dunk that in the delicious sauce. My iced tea was bottled. I think that's odd in a craft restaurant. Nice service from someone who I think is the owner. What a hidden gem in N. Hollywood. Such a beautiful, cozy spot with both the interior and outdoor space thoughtfully and tastefully decorated. Our server, Diana, was incredibly attentive and checked in often to make sure we had everything we needed. The food was absolutely delicious; the pork belly, the salad, and the branzino were standouts. Our only mistake was talking too much and not diving into the pasta right away, but even then, it was still very good. The atmosphere was peaceful and inviting. I'd love to come back during the day to fully enjoy the greenery under the turf. They also have a nice wine list. Street parking is available and wasn't an issue for us. I came to Mater to give my mom a wonderfully, unforgettable birthday dinner and this was the perfect place to do just that. Mater is a fine-dining restaurant that feels secluded and romantic located in North Hollywood.. yes, close enough so you don't have to drive far if you're a SFV local. We were greeted with a kind face at the door and quickly seated. We were given a quick, informative run down of the menu and we ordered two appetizers; pictured below is what the table ordered. Went there on a Sunday evening at around 7pm. We were lucky enough to find parking on the street! No wait, thankfully, and it was a comfortable evening so we sat on the patio. They had heated lamps so it felt super cozy! I would give this restaurant 4/5 for our first visit. Here's what we ordered: - Gnocchi Fritti 4/5 they were a little too soft but still yummy - Tagliatelle Verde Bolognese 4/5 the menu says it's made with slow braised wagyu beef ragu so I had higher expectations for this dish - Panna Cotta 4/5 too bad it was a little too "liquidy" Service was good, the waitress was nice and came several times during dinner to check in on us, sometimes too soon lol however, at the end, around 8-830pm, we were the last guests and it took a while to get the check, even though we asked for it and she said she'd be back. Since we were waiting for a long time, we decided to just get up and walk back inside the restaurant to pay. As we got back inside, the waitress was having a moment with her partner (owner?) which explained why she didn't come back with the check for a while. It got a bit awkward since we had interrupted them. Luckily, they had a super cute Australian shepherd so we focused our attention on the dog instead, paid and left. Nice back patio area, covered, with plenty of heaters for the colder months. Parking is easy in this neighborhood. Mater Caesar - oddly fishy for us. Nice big sheets of parmenggiano on top, fresh romaine hearts underneath, crostini on the side. It seems like the crayfish is in the dressing in the place of a traditional anchovy. Beta - beet salad, which was quite nice. Mellow goat cheese and a generous helping of beets, with grilled endive. Pork Belly appetizer - this was the stand out for me. One big pork belly chunk and one bug delightfully fried potato gratin square with a sea salt panna cotta glaze on the plate. Really interesting flavors and so good together. Tagliatelle Verde Ragu - excellent Ragu. The pasta could have been a more al dente, but it all tastes really nice together. I would get this again. We were also interested to try the gnocchi fritti and the truffle pasta, so we have that to look fwd to next time! They are trying some interesting things here. read more

My wife and I have been to many high-end, fine dining places around town. The food here is up there with the best in town. They are located on a busy street (Burbank Blvd) without designated parking. Parking on Burbank can be busy so adjacent residential streets have to be explored. The area is not the best. The staff is warm, gracious and hospitable. They greeted us and were friendly and welcoming. We ordered several appetizers to try including: pork belly, crab cakes and burrata salad. While the pork belly was very tasty, one piece and potatoes did not feel like a great value. The crab cakes were very fishy tasting with a bad after taste. This dish was very disappointing. The burrata salad was good. Our entrees were okay but not noteworthy. Again, the staff and establishment were terrific but the food was just okay for us. Not a fan of this area. read more

Came in a few months ago and got the spaghetti Al pomodoro and an iberico secreto pork steak. The spaghetti tasted of raw flour and had an unpleasant texture, but the sauce was delicious. The entree was the single worst plate of food I've been served in the decade I've lived in LA. The pork was nice and had a lovely chimichurri-esque sauce on it, but underneath the pork was a sauce described on the menu as "panna cotta butter." This sauce was sweet with vanilla notes and was utterly disgusting when it interacted with the chimichurri. The worst pairing imaginable. The two sides were asparagus (unseasoned and overcooked) and sweet potato (also unseasoned and had a very unpleasant vegetal taste to it that I do not associate with sweet potato) and they were both awful. The waiter saw I had left a lot of food behind and asked if everything was ok. I explained that I didn't like the sauce with the pork and that the sides tasted unseasoned. Went here for dinner with a couple friends. The back patio is very pretty and I love all the mirrors in the hallway. The wait staff was nice and attentive. I rated poorly due to the poor quality of the food which was nowhere near worth the price. We ordered the tagliolini blanchi, tagliolini verde bolognese, and crab cakes. The bolognese was not great and the blanchi was drenched in butter with no real truffle flavor. The crab cakes were overcooked and tasted like they were just microwaved and the corn mixture that came with it had a weird texture and flavor. When to Mater for the 2nd time last night and it was even more delicious than the 1st time and they are now serving wine. We started with an heirloom tomato salad with burrata and balsimic vinegar that was light, fresh and inviting. We ordered three dishes: the tagliatelle verde bolognese, the gnocchi fritti and the branzino. We could not decide which one we liked best, as they were all so flavorful and mouthwatering. The pastas were homemade and the sauces were scrumptious. For dessert we had a homemade crepe filled with luscious, creamy ricotta and shaved chocolate. The atmosphere is very inviting, the prices are beyond reasonable for the quality of food that you are presented with, and the service was friendly and imbeccable. If you are looking for a lovey evening out and outstanding food, you won't be disappointed at Mater. We plan on going back soon. read more

I almost regret doing this review because we love chef alessandro's food and this valentines dinner was our 4th time there, but the service was an F- and if he saw what we went thru he would have been furious. the price fixe dinner had a salad, pasta and main, plus dessert. the salad came to us and then almost immediately the pasta was served while we were less than half thru with our salads, and the waiter rushed away before we could point this out. thus we had to quickly finish our salads and then pile the pasta dish on top of the salad dish. the waiter almost never came to the table, twice i had to get up and walk to a server to ask for water. after the pasta was forced on us, we waited and waited and waited and waited for the main course, maybe 40 minutes. we both had the branzino which was great as always. again no service to our table. it took over 30 minutes after the main was cleared for dessert to arrive. it took so long we were going to just get up and pay at the door and take the desserts home with us. because 2 and a 1/2 hours for 3 dishes, is just way too long. but the worst part was at the end when we were charged $35 for a corkage fee. that is INSANE! I never paid $35 in NYC nor in Paris for that. it was a "youre trying to cheat us" charge. Look the first 2 times we came to eat here you didnt have a wine and beer license yet, so of course we brought our own. $35 is absurd,insulting. and the staff only came to the table once to fill the glasses, so you certainly couldnt call it a service fee. very disappointing. happy for you that you are busy. good luck with that. read more

Mater was such a pleasant surprise. From the moment we sat down, the space felt warm, relaxed, and inviting -- they even had the most beautiful dog to greet us. Honestly, it almost feels too good for the area... but we're very happy it's nearby. The gnocchi was definitely a standout -- pillowy, rich, and perfectly balanced with the sauce. The frittata was equally impressive, comforting yet elevated, and beautifully executed. Every dish felt thoughtful and made with care. The wine list deserves its own praise -- well curated with great selections, including an excellent Gavi that paired beautifully with our meal. You can tell real intention went into choosing bottles that complement the food rather than overwhelm it. Overall, Mater completely exceeded our expectations. Cozy, approachable, and quietly exceptional. Definitely did not expect to find this type of spot in the area. We'll absolutely be back. Wow, I was taken by surprise when my friend @ryanrobertsla invited me to Mater in Studio City last night. On Burbank Blvd, it's just a glass door that looks like a very tiny restaurant. But when you walk in, there's a charming, gorgeous patio space. Outdoor only which I love post Covid. And have I mentioned the food? Extremely affordable fare and the most exquisite branzino with a chimichurri sauce that was cooked perfectly! The presentations were a visual delight. Also, the hand made pasta was delectable and our salads were super interesting, eclectic and amazingly delish! We also had two bottles of wine $59 each and I don't drink alcohol except for special occasions, but I loved the light summer white. The service was five star, friendly and fast. Mater is definitely the best new restaurant I've had in a while and is a top contender for my favorite date night spot. This unsuspecting gem of a restaurant looks small and modest from the outside, but takes you back through their hallway to a beautifully decorated outdoor patio... well actually the whole place is decorated nicely. Now let's get down to business - the FOOD. The head chef is from Italy and it's obvious they care deeply about cooking with how well thought out the dishes and flavor profiles were. My fiancée and I tried four dishes which was just the right amount of food. 1. The Verde Salad - so light and fresh with amazing crunch. Good citrus, saltiness and slight sweetness from the pomegranate seeds. 8.2/10 2. Pork Belly - omg. This is melt in your mouth good. So tender, SO flavorful with the white sauce? This is a must try dish. 9.0/10 3. Taglioni Bianchi - cooked perfectly Al dente and the truffle was so light and not overpowering, but still cheesy and decadent. This is a simple pasta done verrryyyyyy well. 8.8/10 4. Heirloom Iberico - wow, just wow. Perfectly seared pork skirt steak with every single piece so tender and juicy. It was paired with a sweetish purple mashed potato and the flavor pairing was divine. 9.2/10 We didn't try dessert because we were stuffed but I will 100% next time we go back... because I WILL be back. Lastly I wanted to acknowledge Claudio who provided exceptional service. He was so friendly and gave us great recommendations. He was the only server for the night but he managed every table with ease. Thank you for making our first time at Mater a memorable one! The only (temporary) con is that they don't have their liquor license yet... but I can't wait to try their drinks when they do! OMG. This is is the best restaurant in LA. My mom who lived in Italy for a time says it's "the best Italian food in the USA." I agree. It reminds me of home-cooked meals at friends I've dined with in Italy. So so delicious. Beyoncé could eat here. Some Italians were dining next to us and told us we'd love it before we even tasted the food. They were right! Beyond that, the service is wonderful. 100% authentic Italian. This restaurant opened this year and it is a hidden gem. I am telling everyone about it because I'd love for it to stay in this neighborhood. Hoping this place will have lines around the block soon. This restaurant is a hidden gem! Everything we tasted was absolutely delicious. We had the truffle and bolognese pastas, filet mignon, & Cesar salad. The noodles were delicate and flavorful. The steak with mashed potatoes hit just right. The ambiance feels like you're in somebody's backyard. The service was very attentive and on point. What a gem of a place I discovered. This unassuming place more than delivers. Sat in the back of the restaurant and had a delicious meal! Started with the salad verde which was dressed perfectly, split a simple, perfect pasta. I had the branzino that was grilled and served with a delicious chimichuri and grilled asparagus that I'll definitetly go back for. Great wine by the glass and had great service from our waiter, Claudio. The chef is Italian and from Rome, which shows up in the food, presentation and sensibility of the space. I really don't like leaving negative reviews and I sat on this one for a while, not being sure if I wanted to leave a review. My husband and I came to Mater in December and were excited to try a new spot with such raving reviews. The outdoor seating was really nice and staff were very kind. We ordered the crab cakes, pork belly, a pasta dish (bolognese), and a meat dish for my husband. The crabs cakes came frozen and the corn that came on the side was not my favorite. Our waiter apologized and quickly brought out another one but that was also cold. The pork belly and pasta were both just ok. A solid 3/5. The meat dish my husband ordered was very fatty and at one point we had to ask for a paper napkin so he can spit out a piece that was inedible. Again, I really don't like writing the negative reviews especially for smaller businesses, but we also work really hard for our money and if I'm going to pay over $200 for a meal, I want to actually enjoy it and not leave underwhelmed. I hope this was just a fluke and a one off but don't think we would be back. Also, a small note, I hope they change their cups to glassware. Drinking wine out of an acrylic cup was not pleasant. We had the truffle pasta, the Bolognese, and the Branzino, and each one was rich in flavor and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. The owner, who is from Rome, was incredibly warm and welcoming. His passion for authentic Italian cuisine truly shines through in both the food and the atmosphere. They're currently in their soft opening phase as they finalize their beer and wine license, so now is the perfect time to support a fantastic small business.
