This place totally looks like the cottage Ms. Honey lives in if you are familiar with the movie Matilda. A friend of mine who loves coffee wanted to check out what the whole "maté" idea was about. As someone who does not drink coffee because caffeine makes me very jittery, I had the maté peach iced tea. Obviously this type of drink does not contain as much caffeine as coffee (maybe it does and I just don't know) but in any case this drink was delicious and refreshing on a hot and humid Savannah summer day. I felt like type of caffeine/sugar symptom after drinking it. I also sampled a choc chip/oatmeal cookie made with a special type of flour, cannot remember its name, but it was very good too! Did not have any food so cannot comment on that, but for the drink and snack it was a home run. read more

This little hidden paradise makes me so happy. I love how original their idea of having a place dedicating their drinks to maté is. Personally I love the bold taste of maté but I appreciate how they have drinks that sweeten that strong flavor into a subtle surprise. Very cute tea shop in a non-touristy location. Driven by a number not times and finally stopped to get some maté. It's pretty small but seems bigger due to the different levels you can sit at. The baked goods look delicious, I tried cranberry orange scones, but the breads, muffins, ...well everything looked good. They've got a number of yogurts as well. My hazelnut mate was delicious and I was offered a taste of mocha, which I didn't know before cause I usually hate the coffee flavor, but I liked the sample. Atmosphere blasts you into another time and place. A time when the bread was fresh and the food was real. Quaint colonial feel and magnificent food. The outside dining area gives one a sense of ease and comfort. Most people will find this place a must visit while le was n Savannah, but I'm kind of glad it hasn't become a tourist trap and keeps that hometown feel. So, I really do think you can tell a lot about a coffee shop by trying their signature coffee. And this place did not disappoint. I think Old St. Joes is one of their signature drinks, and it was soooo good. I was actually surprised by how much I liked it, since it was a latte and I tend to just like black coffee and not so much espresso. It was the perfect blend of slight bitter, and sweet from the steamed milk. I also purchased a loaf of their bread but I can't remember exactly what it was called... It had chunks of cheese baked into it, as well as peppers and spinach, maybe? Lord, do I remember that cheese tho. That bread was the bee's knees, the cat's pajamas, the jelly to my peanut butter. It was insanely good, especially when it was toasted a bit and the delicious cheesy flavor really came out... slightly melty.... slightly charred on the top... slightly thick, almost sourdough consistency in the crumb... I was literally giant-ing that loaf; ripping off chunks and stuffing them into my mouth. I was not prepared to take the time to cut slices when that bread needed to be in my mouth NOW. They also had an assortment of other breads (banana was another one I was eyeing), squares (date, etc.), scones (raspberry, though it's probably seasonal), and other assortments of delicious savory and sweet goods that all looked and smelled amazing. Came for the coffee, and now that I know their baked goods are so excellent, I will be needing more of them the next time I visit. THE VERDICT: This is my kind of coffee shop: rustic appearance, woody-tree vibe, cheap coffee that is also delicious, and the smell of fresh baked pastries. Ahhh, heaven. It's on the smallish, intimate side, but those really are my favorite kinds of coffee shops. Luckily, it was located not too far from the hostel we stayed at, and what a serious gem this place is. I was smitten after the first visit. I think it'd definitely be a place to go when you want a quick pastry or sandwich and a delicious cuppa. The ambiance steals the show, but the drinks are awesome and sandwiches very good. This was my family's first experience with Mate lattes -we've been missing out for years! From the eggnog to peppermint to chai -they were all awesome lattes! The sandwiches were so fresh and the eggs sooo fluffy -not sure how they did it, but we loved them. We were on our way out of town, but the inside of this place is amazing and they comfy cozy back patio as well. Mate Factor is the new little coffee shop on East Hall. The owners have definitely proved their passion for restoration with the wooden and earthy inspired decor. If you sit at the very top, you get a good view of some hand painted mural art. I felt like a young explorer with green drink in hand! The cafe has been opened for under a month, but the buzz around it is totally local. If you're looking for a quiet space to meet up for coffee, get some work done, or even just to escape some of the more well-known spots in Savannah, this is your spot. I personally enjoyed the Sweet Roll and the Vanilla Hazelnut Latte. You can ask for almond milk rather than steamed cow's milk if you want to be that much greener. If you're looking for heartier breakfast, this might not be the first stop in your morning route: no eggs or bacon here. I'm going to label this as a local favorite. It's not a long distance from the park, and it's sure to be quaint and green for anyone off the beaten path. Keep it Tasty Savannah. read more

What a cool little cafe/bakery! First of all, the actual storefront and interior are BEAUTIFUL. It's like something out of a set for some hip movie. SO CLEAN. The drink menu has lots of variety and we both enjoyed our maté. I don't remember for sure what I got but everything looked really interesting. We each got a baked good, I opted for the sweet potato cake and he got the date bar and both paired really well with the maté drink we got. This place serves mate teas and coffee from Brazil. The space is really cool. It's almost like a tree house themed seating area mixed with a traditional cafe. There is seating in the front and the back with ample outdoor seats. The bathroom is really unique. The whole vibe of the place is hippie hipster outdoorsy with excellent fresh organic foods and drinks. The service is friendly albeit somewhat aloof but in a good way. I quite enjoy the iced coffee and it's light flavoring of savory spices. They also have a wide variety of pastries, sandwiches and breads basically calling you at the counter. Spend a few minutes, or spend the whole afternoon- it's easy to do here. Being out of the usual tourist circuit, it's a great space to hang with the locals and have some quiet downtime. This coffee shop has only been open for 2 weeks, and it seems like everyone knows about it! The inside is amazing, with exposed wooden beams and a market type decor. The staff/owners were just awesome, very friendly, and helpful. I was with two friends, and we got the Yerba Mate coffee mocha and vanilla hazelnut drinks. Both were great! They also had a number of pastries but we didn't try them. Overall, it was a great find for just being in town for 1 day. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting or living here! read more

I have been here three times. The maté drinks that I have tried are spectacular. The flavors are complex, but complimentary. They're sooo good. They bake all their own bread and desserts, and they're very good at it. Whichever sandwich you choose, you won't be making a mistake. They're all well thought out and presented. If I could have one complaint, it would be the chips that are served with the sandwiches. I'm not a fan of potato chips, especially plain chips. And they're not open on weekends. Great service and atmosphere. The design inside reminded me of a restaurant in Poland. The server was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I got an iced maté that was half a sweetened one (lemon lime). I also got a turkey sandwich, which was yummy, but too much mustard for my preference and next time will order it without cheese. I also got Yerba Maté to make at home. I made it in a teapot and am enjoying it without sweetener! I'm hoping it will help me decrease or even eliminate coffee drinking. read more
