This location of Matchbox is one of the many restaurants on Bethesda Row, but they do a great job of making an attempt to stand out in terms of their food quality and service. We made a reservation on a Saturday afternoon but there were still a lot of seating options that could have been available for a walk-in. Our bartender was very friendly and polite, and gave some recommendations when asked. We got the Monte Cristo sandwich from the brunch menu, which was delicious, with a mix of sweet and savory--French toast with strawberry jam, bacon, eggs, cheese, and smoked turkey in between it. Lots of calories but it was really tasty. We also tried the Crispy Half Chicken--24-hour brined chicken that's fried in broth, onions, garbanzo beans, coucous. It was really well seasoned and the coucous came in a light sauce that complemented the tender chicken. The service was great, and the restaurant was clean with a nice, subtle ambiance. Had a nice dinner here- I got the crispy chicken Cobb salad- portion is huge and chicken was perfectly seasoned and crispy- we got both the old bay and buffalo wings for happy hour and they were good and hit the spot although one of the wings was red on the inside-also tried the avo crab appetizer which was good but did not blow me away- the pig and pineapple pizza got thumbs up as well as Nashville hot sandwich- rib eye was good but was a little over cooked (ordered as medium and was more well done) -the matchbox meat pizza also got thumbs up but I thought was a little salty . Service was acceptable but waiter was slightly slow and had no personality but no complaints - the restaurant is cleans and spacious - gets very loud when crowded- we could not hear each other at all - you can't go for much conversation but all in all had a nice dependable dinner! read more

So I had the Miso Salmon (pictured) and my date had the crab cake sandwich! I think this restaurant is a solid reliable restaurant for casual eats and a good time! My salmon was delicious and a good portion of food. My date said his crab cake sandwich was delicious as well. I would definitely come back. The place is spacious with a huge bar area with lots of seating. I've here before and enjoyed the tuna poke bowl as well! So far the quality of food is consistent and haven't had one bad experience. The busyness of the holidays always makes dining out a bit challenging. I had one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had with Mathbox in Bethesda. I ordered through the Matchbox website, because I thought that would be better for the restaurant. I placed an order online and waited over an hour, only to have the order cancelled without explanation. The cancellation notice told me to call the restaurant. When I called, I was hung up on twice. When I finally reached the manager, she was rude, condescending, and very difficult to communicate with. She told me I couldn't have my order remade and delivered, and that she couldn't process a refund at that time. In other words: no food, no refund, no help.I understand mistakes happen, but the way this was handled was completely unacceptable. Good customer service means making it right, not hanging up on customers and refusing to provide solutions. I won't be ordering from here again, and I recommend others think twice before doing so. read more

My excitement was two-fold, one to support a Black-Owned Business & the other to have a Vegan Beyond Sausage pizza to contribute to Yelp's June Luck Club. I missed the mark with the date, yet still got to delight in my pizza. Before being delighted, I had to call twice to get assistance with my online delivery order so I could apply my Reward. Brian, who took both of my calls was uber helpful & happy to assist. He also took it upon himself to make sure the crust was Vegan friendly. I tried to push my luck with the Onion Strings, yet he was quick to say they are good, yet unfortunately not Vegan friendly. Matchbox doesn't offer Vegan cheese (wishful yet) however, Brian said he tried the Beyond Sausage Pizza before & it was pretty good even without the cheese. He was right, as the sauce & toppings blended just right & I consumed four of the hearty eight slices. I did drizzle a little bit of Vegan Cheese on a few slices just to experiment, yet overall my pie was darn good. I'm a raging (tremendous) reward user & their free program offers an immediate reward upon sign up to use on your next visit. Earn when you spend - $1=1 point, 125 points = $10 reward, with a free birthday pizza. While dining in the app's check-in process provides another way to earn points. Aside from carryout/delivery, there is limited patio seating & they are open 7 days a week, times vary. Although a day late for the YLC, it was right on time for a wood-fired Vegan Pie. So we were thinking of sliders for Mother's Day takeout COVID-19 style, and were quite sad to determine our normal go-to Matchbox location in Rockville appears to be closed during the pandemic. Luckily, a quick call revealed this Matchbox location was open for takeout. Placed our order and drove over. Had to wait a little longer than anticipated but the weather was nice and the sidewalk area big enough that social distancing was not an issue. The lady handing out the orders was very friendly and professional. Sliders were delish, onion curlies sadly were soggy - chicken pesto pizza was only available in large so a bit more pizza than needed or wanted. Apple and pear salad was above average - it didn't make me mad. In short, great place for a reasonable dinner during the pandemic. Limited but decent menu, and friendly staff. read more

Met clients here for Sunday dinner. Nice host and great bartenders. They were very accommodating on mixed drink ingredients. Shrimp & grits and pizza are personal favorites of mine. I am a fan of Matchbox. I definitely like the Bethesda location. It is definitely much smaller than Rockville but if you like the ood you cant go wrong. I've always been a fan of Matchbox and this location is perfect. I didn't even know it was here until my friend suggested we meet up here. It opened about two weeks ago. It replaced American Tap Room. There is a convenient parking garage right next door. I dined here last night! Although it was super packed because of the NATS game, I found the service excellent. I must give kudos to Alex - she did a great job and was very personable. I was being so indecisive but she was very patient. Thank you! I finally decided on an old fashioned cocktail and the chicken pesto pizza. I can't come to matchbox and not get their pizza it's so good. My daughter and I are around the corner getting ice cream. But I guess my husband wasn't in the mood for the same thing. So he grabbed a table on the patio at this place and ordered himself a drink and some dessert. The atmosphere was perfect and I did browse the menu since we recently had a friend mention loving their pizzas. My husband ordered a drink from the bar and said it was one of the better ones he's had in quite a while. He also ordered himself the carrot cake. It was absolutely huge! Wow. It was pretty dreadful. Fish & chips were greasy (the uncleaned brown oil sort) and flavorless and generally nasty. The coleslaw was withered and limp. The kid ordered chicken strips from the kids menu that were dry and nasty too. Why oh why did we choose this place as our lunch date? I cannot believe I paid $41 for this. The staff was nice and attentive. But it is a restaurant after all and the food was inedible. This place has to shut down. The place was packed on a Saturday, so it is a good idea to make reservations. Parking is easy. Montgomery county parking garage is right next door with very reasonable rates on weekdays. My boss/colleague ordered the "Brunch" An all-you-can-eat affair offering a menu of at least 15 different options; served as small plates. Think avocado toast or Matchbox scramble, mini lemon pound cakes. Some Items they ordered & enjoyed. Boss also enjoyed the "Bloody Mary" w/crispy Smoked Bacon garnish. Looked delicious (see Photos) I ordered the "Matchbox Scramble" entree size (scramble eggs, cheese, Poblano peppers, onions) I also ordered a side of avocado. It made a delicious complement to the dish. I really liked the Strawberry Lemonade made w/fresh muddled strawberries. Excellent customer service. Our server friendly, attentive & knew the menu well. If i could give a 0, I would. The Caesar salad had a ladybug in it and the staff, at best, didn't seem to care. The waitstaff stared at me and my son after we sent the dish back and it was super awkward. And the staff never came back to apologize, let alone clear the table. I apologize for not taking a picture of the ladybug, but it was gross. I can only imagine the kitchen is filthy. I have been to many Matchbox restaurants and this one is the absolute worst. Matchbox is not what it was 10-15 years ago. They used to have my favorite pizza's in the area. I would frequent the original Chinatown location weekly. I think they've gone through new ownership and maybe expanded too fast. The place is a shell of its former self. Slow and forgetful service. The pizza is meh. Pretty sure some of the recipes have been tweaked and not for the better. Specifically the chicken pesto pizza. I just don't look forward to going to Matchbox like I used to. It's sad. No wonder the 14th St location closed. The Bethesda Matchbox needs new management. The staff all seemed undertrained. read more

Two things rubbed me the wrong way: 1st, the hostess dug her hand in my fries before they made it to my table; 2nd, the waiter asked if he did something wrong as I put in the amount for the tip. Note, I will tip, but I don't like to feel obligated to tip 20% just because you were friendly and came once it was time for the bill; plenty of things could've been better should be common knowledge as a waiter, such as refills, or asking if everything came out okay(especially if u did not bring the food out yourself).
