This carryout-only shop on Cicero Ave in Crestwood has been open for a number of years, and yet I've never managed to stop in?!? What's really strange is that I happen to be a guy who LOVES a good burger.. like, it's one of my favorite foods. Anyway, I stopped in on my way home from work recently, and it was well worth the trip. I'm guessing the owner helped me during my visit, as he was the only one working. As mentioned, Retro Burger is a small, but very clean space with an extremely limited menu. That speaks to me. Pick a handful of things you're going to serve folks and then skillfully execute them. My burger choices were either "Hamburger" or "Cheeseburger". Now both of these options feature a 1/2 pound of beef, and we're not talking about pre-made, pre-formed or frozen burger patties. This gentleman opened the cooler, took out a tube of fresh ground beef, cut off a 1/2 pound, slapped it on the flat top and gave it a press. I knew this was gonna be special. The brioche bun is steamed prior to a quick trip to the griddle. The grilled onions were dropped in the deep fryer for a minute and then plopped on the griddle next to the burger patty. The bacon came next and it was crispy. Gave the burger a nice crunch without being overwhelming. The lettuce and tomatoes are fresh... you're probably picking up the vibe by now. This cheeseburger was no joke. Very tasty, and made with care. The rest of the menu consists of a hot dog, a polish sausage and maybe one other thing, but the reason to stop in to Retro Burger is for the burgers! The cheese fries were fine, but nothing to write home about. The price point is higher because the quality is there and you can taste it. There are 3 or 4 other places within 5 miles of this place if you're looking for a $5 Big Baby Double Cheeseburger, but I would strongly encourage you to spend a few extra dollars and get yourself a serious sandwich. I had the pleasure of walking into a place where the people working may have been some of the kindest I've met in a long time. I don't want to go into too much detail but they really seem to care about their customers. The Philly Cheese Steak was delicious! Not perfect, little over cooked, but definitely better than most.
