Verdict: 3 out of 5 based only on food. Probably be a 3.5 if I added the atmosphere, but with a not so good experience, 3 is generous.
I wanted to try out Masami for awhile considering people were comparing it to Sushi Sake. We decided to try a little bit of everything.
1. Noodles - Zaru soba and tempura udon
Let's start positive. Because it's going downhill from here. The best dishes were the soba and udon noodles, and that's not really anything to be proud of. I mean it's noodles... how can you fail that? *Rhetorical question*
Flavor: The soup base for the udon was awesome. It was shoyu and shiitake base. It was light in flavor and went well with the udon. Tempura is tempura. It does what it's supposed to do, taste good. Zaru soba was the basic stuff. Carbs FTW!
Presentation: I only write something here if the dish was meant to be presented.
2. Sushi - Unagi, Uni, Snow crab, Tamago, Red snapper, Squid, and Octopus
Flavor: I rarely order tuna or salmon on a first time basis at a sushi restaurant. I want to taste freshness from foods people tend not to care or order.
Unagi - Standard, tasted like any other place's unagi.
Uni - Very little, but was fresh.
Tamago - Too sweet.
Red snapper - Not as fresh as I wanted it. Not the melt in your mouth taste.
Squid/Octopus - They should have added more wasabi underneath. Texture was a bit rubbery.
Presentation: Please see pics.
3. Sushi specials
Volcano
Flavor: I don't know about other people, but I prefer not to pay $13+ on a sushi special that only tasted like mayo, rice, and cucumber. I've always ordered a volcano special at ever new sushi place that I try. It was more like a dormant volcano below sea level crusted over thousand and thousand of years. Seriously, there was ZERO hotness ie the burn. I used all the sriracha on 1 roll, and I tasted nothing.
The mayo is too strong and masks every other flavor. I could tell that I'm eating rice and cucumbers because of the texture. Scallops were hard to find and taste. They were cut into pea sized pieces making us wonder if there were any scallops.
Presentation: If it doesn't taste good, who cares what it looks like. Please see pics below to judge yourself.
Masami Dynamite
Flavor: Maybe the mayo is the issue. Or I shouldn't have ordered mayo based specials. Really, I know mayo is cheap compared to fish, but the sushi doesnt need to be drenched in it. The mayo for this dish was lighter compared to the Volcano, which helped. You can taste the octopus and mushrooms easily. The scallops was MIA similar to the Volcano. This dish gets old very fast because after the first few bites, which did taste good, everything after tastes like mayo + rice. Volcano is better than Masami dynamite, since the Volcano had cucumbers. Added texture is nice.
Spider roll
Flavor: I thought that it couldn't get any worse... It usually does when you think that. The soft shell crab was chewy and rubbery. Very bad combo for this dish. Also, the fishy taste and smell was very strong too. No matter how much wasabi that I used, it didn't help. I almost had a gag reflex because I was trying to give it a second chance. I didn't even finish it.
4. Dessert - Fruit parfait? I think
Flavor: No pics unfortunately. After what I went through, dessert was heaven. We forgot to take the pics. :) It's pretty much vanilla ice cream mixed with chocolate syrup topped with whipped cream and fruits. It was super sweet. If we had a choice, I would have asked for green tea ice cream as a replacement.
5. Sake Flights
Flavor: If you prefer your cold sake on the sweet side, then you would like the flights. I'm not a fan of sweet alcohol. It's just preference.
OVERALL: I may return to try other sushi, but not anytime soon.
Atmosphere: The place was cozy and comfortable. A bit dark, but I wouldn't be bothered by it. I saw more couples than groups.
Food: The food... was not as great. I had some expectations, since people were saying it's comparable or even better than Sushi Sake. Even on Sushi Sake's bad day, this place shouldn't be compared.
Price: It's prices are average. I think that it's reasonable priced for sushi, but specials aren't worth it.
Staff: A bit slow on a week night. Our dirty plates remained on our table until we ordered dessert then the plates were cleared. read more
