We are so happy to see Mary's reopened after the winter closure. My wife and I went there for breakfast and glad to see everything back to normal and menu had not changed with all our favorites still on the menu. We were greeted with a smile and seated immediately. The gentleman that took us to our booth promptly went and brought our coffee. Then a familiar face, Carin, came and took our order. I can see why this is a locals place. It's clean, its "homey" and not fancy in the way that tourist traps can be. There is kitsch (surfboards on the wall, etc.) but it seems to fit, seems to work in this "cute little place". The food was good. I got a chessesteak omelet, it was hot, cheesy and well made. The hasbrowns were okay if unevenly crisped. The biscuit was nice, fluffy and warm when it arrived. This was a good solid meal at a nice little place. I would seek this place out on another visit. The people are fun, sweet as southern iced tea and competent. [One thought on this-not particularly a cristicsm of Mary's]. This seems to be a problem in many places that I have been to. Even if they get the rest of the plate right, the hasbrowns seem like some kind of after thought. I have had the over crisped plate wide potato chip and the plate of steamed semi-mash [that was really wrong]. Perhaps someday I will open a place called Hash-Browns and cleverly sell legal marijuana and actual shredded potato's cooked properly- of course if the patron lights up at the table they may not care about the quality of the dish. read more

I like the homey atmosphere of this restaurant. To me, it feels like a mom and pop diner. The hubs and I ordered a typical breakfast. The food was just fine, hot and fresh. Nothing over the top to amaze and wow you, but good standard, consistent fare. Perfect if you need to get a hearty start for a busy day. The service, for me, was average. I did have to "look" for my server for refills. Also, they have some delicious looking cakes on display! I would return just to try the ckae! They close at 3pm and serve only breakfast or lunch. Whether you're having breakfast, lunch or dinner, Mary's is a great dinner for a home cooked meal. They're located on Va Beach Blvd about 4 blocks from the strip. Always check the specials... which unfortunately I forgot to do on my latest trip. Normally when I eat here I have a breakfast platter of some sort. However I was in a burger mood this day and that's what I ordered. The burger here while not bad is a little on 'thin' side. For almost 9 bucks, counting the fries & drink, I expect a little more. Again, it's not a complaint so much as it's a reminder of what I should have ordered. Burgers just aren't the big thing here. If you're having breakfast I suggest trying an omelet and I also enjoy their fresh cut home fries. On the weekends they're also open late into the night so you make that 2am breakfast run after bar hopping at the ocean front. If you're going to visit late, or should I say early, they can get a little crowded. Make sure you get in before 2am so you can get a seat. read more

On our way into Virginia Beach a couple of weeks back, we stopped at Mary's Restaurant for breakfast. Located just four blocks inland from the touristy beach area, I'm told this is a local favorite. Upon our arrival just before 9 A.M. on a Sunday the restaurant wasn't overly crowded and a table for nine was available right away. When we left the restaurant all the tables were full and there was a wait for any new customers. So get there early. For breakfast I ordered the biscuits and gravy ($4.95) along with a side of home fries ($1.79). The biscuits were nearly square-shaped and clearly homemade. They were dense and very good. The sausage gravy needed a touch of extra salt but was still good. The home fries also appeared to be fresh-cut and were cooked perfectly. The breakfast menu is quite large and definitely has something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable, omelets starting at $6, pancakes for under $4, and there is even an early bird special for those arriving before nine. Our service was quick and the food was all good to very good. This was a good find. read more

The cappuccino could have been one of the worst ever. The omelette had old avocado on it. The mushrooms seemed slimy and had something in it resembling egg shells or super over cooked bacon crumbs. Food and drink=D Service = A Thanks for keeping tabs. Honestly I could have made a big stink, I did send back my cappuccino to replace with regular coffee and it still made it onto the bill. Went there for breakfast today. I had Mary's Feast (pancakes, eggs, grits, bacon, & home fries). This place was just OK. Pancakes were kind of dry and bland and they didn't feel really homemade--they didn't have that nice, crispy, buttery edge that I like. Pancakes at Cracker Barrell are much better. Home fries were undercooked...not enough of them had crunchy brown parts. Grits were just average....not very flavorful. Bacon, eggs, sausage & sweet tea were good. Hush puppies were too dough-y. I wouldn't go back. I would prefer to go to Doc's. Service was great! Very friendly, helpful, patient. All the workers in there make you feel right at home; they make you feel like you are a local. .....even though they had Fox News on the TV. read more

came in around 1 I was ready for lunch but my boyfriend was still in the mood for breakfast so we decided this would be a good compromise. as soon as we walked in seeing the chalkboard menus for blue plate specials & today's cake menu, i knew we made a good choice. it was modern inside with a vintage feel but like authentic no ironic hipster vibes detected. i decided on the fried pork chops with hush puppies, mac&chz, with rice & gravy. i was craving home cookin & i came to the right spot. the food came out pretty quickly & smelled amazing when it arrived. my pork chops were fried perfectly & seasoned to perfection. the gravy was a nice consistency also seasoned just right. now the mac&chz recipe they use here isn't baked more similar to the creamy style they have at golden corral but the taste was pretty good. i enjoyed my meal so much it was hard to stop eating! will definitely be back to try some more great food read more

This place is very adorable. I called in an order Saturday morning/ afternoon for pickup. The order had 3 meals and two drinks. The ladies working the counter when I came to pick up were very sweet and helpful. The food was pretty good, probably would've been better if we hadn't gotten it to go. The reason I took a star off is because we were missing three items (bacon, sausage, and toast) from our order, which I should've checked before leaving but the amount of stuff I figured everything would be in there. It's off the beaten path, but the locals know it's there. I had a Denver omelet with a side of wheat toast. My wife had the vegetarian omelet with a side of rye toast. Both of our omelets were good. The portion of hash browns was somewhat smaller than what I've typically gotten at other restaurants, but was plenty to eat (don't need to fill up on starch). I've been the Mary's twice for breakfast on the weekend. It's just ok. The staff is very nice. The first time, I ordered eggs over easy and they whites were still slimy. It was so underdone it looked like it was barely holding a solid shape on my plate. The second time, I ordered over medium and they were perfect. Unfortunately my bacon and hash browns were underdone to the point where the potato and onion tasted raw. Keep in mind that you'll probably have to overlook a lot of things and address some things because they struggle keeping up with the crowd on the weekend. Some things we had to address with the waitress was the watered down syrup, we asked for a different container that was not as watered down. We had to ask for coffee refills twice and never got it so we had to flag down a different waitress. We asked for straws and were told they ran out but other waitresses had aprons stuffed full of them (this matters because this place doesn't seem very clean). There was syrup all over our table and on the outside of the syrup container. We had to ask for our table to be wiped down as soon as we were seated. Some things we over looked were dirty silverware on the floor under the table, no napkins, awful bitter coffee, offering the military discount then not actually giving it, being served torn pancakes, burnt toast, and undercooked food. read more

Environment for Mary's is nice, with the diner feel to it. The service is slow, not gonna lie, took about five minutes for a server to come to us, was polite to us, but after we ordered our drinks it took a good ten to fifteen minutes to get them. Girlfriend got the Mimosa flight and it's juice from a machine, with some alcohol in it, nothing special at all. I got coffee, and I can say it was good. She got the crab and cheese omelet with pepper jack cheese on it. Literally the pepper jack is a slice from the deli and just laid in there, and she said it's nothing special and really could use seasoning for taste, and almost every bite of crab had shell. I got the Mary's special, which is the breakfast sampler and it wasn't to bad, the pancakes were meh, and it has to be the batter because the stuff you get at the store taste better. As a flight attendant I travel all over specifically to to check out the local eateries. Today I happened upon Mary's in Virginia Beach. If I could give a negative star review, I would. We had a party of 8. We placed our orders and one hour later our food came, but not until after we asked several times the status of our order. Our server had a negative attitude every time we asked for refills on coffee or chocolate milks. At one point she said in a snarky tone, "you've only been here for 15mins". Actually, it was closer to an hour. Other tables who had our same snarky server were upset that they were not being served their food. One excuse she gave us for the food coming out so late was she had to put the order in on two separate tickets. Hmmmmm..... Now, for the food. My chipped beef and gravy came out cold, too thick and I could actually count how many chips of beef that were in the gravy. I ordered home fries, however, they never appeared. I couldn't eat such a pasty, tasteless breakfast. The chicken and waffles with bacon was another story. The only part edible was the cold waffle with cold butter and cold syrup. The bacon was thinner than parchment paper and the chicken was cold and soggy. We were served an extra plate of French toast which we did not order. The server took it back with the comment that they will resell it. Mmmmmm.....don't think so. I don't think the health department would think so either. Especially after we told her that we actually touched the food on the plate. In the end we were offered a 10% discount. The entire order should've been comped. Hardly any of the food ordered was consumable. I would think the management would wonder why so much food was being thrown out. Maybe the food sucks as bad as the service? read more

Got here and walked in the wrong side (the door on the right side facing the building) and had to walk all the way through the restaurant. The seater had a table cleaned off for us and while we were waiting for our server the bus boy got our drink orders and brought them out. The waitress hadn't picked up her tip off the table for us and to me that was a sign that she might not be super attentive to us because they were pretty busy. She came, collected her tip and said she would be right back. Still a bit concerning to me, but wasn't ready to give up yet. Upon her return, we ordered that fat daddy omelet or something along those lines which has pretty much all basic breakfast foods in it, fried green tomatoes, and a mango guava juice. The food came out at a pretty good speed and the portions were huge! The food was so delicious I forgot to take a picture until after I had already eaten some. After we saw they have military and a public service discount and we noticed there dessert board was filled with milkshakes and they have cinnamon rolls as well. Came here today for breakfast at the recommendation of a local friend. Food was just okay, service was just okay. The reason they get 2 stars is there was a man who came in, cased the place, then sat down at the table closest to me to beg me to buy him breakfast. When I pointed this out to several restaurant employees I was met with disbelief and one even said "oh I'm sure someone will eventually buy him breakfast ".
