It was disappointing. I showed the stylist photos of the color I wanted, I showed her the style of chunky highlights I wanted, we looked at color swatches.....the end result was no where NEAR what I had asked for. Even the stylist said casually "that isn't the color you asked for". They still charged me 235.00. read more

I cannot recommend Mary's Salon any higher if you are looking for an independent establishment that has that old Austin feel. There aren't many places like this around anymore. It is truly a gem! Don't let the location scare you away as there is ample designated parking in the garage only a few steps away from the salon. Mary is there all the time and could not have a more amiable disposition. Support your local independent stylist and give Mary's Hair Studio a try. You can thank me later. read more

Carmen did a great job. She was pleasant, professional, and precise. Glad I found this place!

Sharon did a great job on my hair! She was very detail oriented, knew exactly what I wanted and delivered it perfectly! If you're looking to get the perfect curtain bangs, she's your gal! read more

Visiting Austin and tired of my haircut and went into Mary's Hair Studio on a whim. I told Mary my needs: no styling time, looks good whether air dry or using a blower, updated hairstyle. She listened and I have the BEST haircut that I've had in years! So many compliments from my friends. Thanks Mary! I wish I lived in Austin, you would be my regular stylist. read more

I needed a quick trim before a wedding and Mary pushed her books to fit me in right then and there. It was just a men's trim, but it was one of the best haircut experiences I can remember. Mary herself cut my hair, and she is as talented a stylist as she is a skilled conversationalist. If I'm coming back to Austin I wait to cut my hair at Mary's. Thank you so much Mary, it looks could kill you'd be an arms dealer. read more

Being from out of town and in desperate need of a restorative hair care day, I was blessed to find Mary's Hair Studio!!! I had sorely neglected my hair, color wise as well as style. After an entirely relaxing visit, I left with a fabulous color and style, and incredibly soft hands after a paraffin wax treatment. It's a frightening thought to visit a hair salon that you have never been to before and might possibly never have a chance to visit again. Mary's is definitely a jewel. So sorry I do not live in Austin. read more

I am so, so, so sorry to write this review. Sorry because I work nearby and have come here for occasional manicures (and once, an updo) over the years. Never been moved enough by the experience to write a review, either thumbs up or down. AND I'm sorry because I know the owner is going through a rough time right now, health-wise, and she's a lovely person, and I just cringe at the thought of her reading this. Or losing business I'm sure she really needs right now. So I waited at least a week after my mani-pedi to write this. But I feel like it sucks that someone else would have my experience there simply because I was too conflict avoidant to say anything critical about it. (Yeah, I know, yelp is not the best way of being non-conflict-avoidant. Shut up.) My mani-pedi was awful. $65 plus tip (omg yes I tipped) of awful. At least the cute girl who did it was very gentle, careful, clean and not hurtful. I give her that. The tools were clean and the area was clean. It's just that Brittany seemed so unsure of what she was doing; she didn't really clean up my cuticles, or make my hands and feet look and feel substantially better than when I walked in. I'm hard on my hands (do jiu jitsu) and the skin was very dry, flaky, peeling. My feet are calloused. They came in that way and they walked out that way. And *grrrrrr* I told her just clear on the toes... fine, but at least two coats please? and don't apply polish over nails that have been swiped with lotion! clean the nails off with more polish remover first! And on the fingernails-- I wanted a pale pink. How about a base coat? The polish was so drippy on the brush that I had it all over my cuticles and she didn't tidy them up with a Q-tip or anything. No second coat, no top coat, just some commentary about the next client on her schedule already being there (I had been at her station for an hour and 15 min and I needed to leave too.) I went upstairs to my office and took off the fingernail polish, redid them with a coat of clear, and left. Poor Brittany, I know because you told me that usually you do hair. Stick to the hair. Mary, doll, I love ya, good luck with your health issues, but when your manicurist isn't available, please just say so, don't put a hair person in the mani chair. And please don't make me feel guilty about this review by contacting me and begging me to come back. I usually go elsewhere for mani-pedi services and I will continue to do so. I can get a mani-pedi that's WORLDS better at US Spa by my house. I'm sorry to have to write this. I have had good experiences with hairdos here... just won't be back for the manicures. read more

Had my first haircut at Mary's a few weeks ago. I walked in over the noon hour and got in in 10 minutes. The stylist asked lots of questions and was very competent, although conversation petered out very quickly. (I'm not one for gabbing with my stylist, but sitting there for 20 minutes with no conversation whatsoever feels a little awkward.) She did her best to conform to my wishes, and I'm overall pleased with the cut I got. They don't advertise their prices, though, and I felt a little sticker shock when I had to pay $30 (plus tip) for a simple, men's haircut, especially since the surroundings aren't particularly plush (and you don't get a free beer as with some other shops in town). They do offer you a bottled water, but that's a pretty expensive bottle of water. I think I'd go back if I were in a pinch, but I don't think it will be my regular place. read more

I love love love this place! So close to work and they get me in as a walk in right away. Today was a pedicure and although the lady there was busy, they called another employee who walked down to do my pedicure. Excellent service and I highly recommend them! read more

Mary's Hair Studio - Pretty in pink! - Hair Salons Near Me - Austin, Texas

I don't trust anyone to cut my long, wavy hair. My mom used to cut it for me, and also a close friend who used to be a stylist. I was used to their good work. But it's been years, and since then a couple of other people cut my hair and left it all jacked up because they don't know how to deal with wavy locks. So that and then the pandemic were perfect excuses to just not go get it cut. Until the ends started looking kind of ragged...and I tried cutting it myself, twice. I figured I only had myself to be angry at if I fudged it up. Well, it didn't come out terrible, but it wasn't great either. It's grown out quite a bit and you could really see how crooked it was. I have a trip planned to visit my family & don't want to show up looking ratty, so it was time to get my sh-- together and go get this mop of mine fixed. I researched online and found a place near my work downtown with good reviews, and decided to give it a shot. Sharon tackled my crooked self-cut hair and cleaned it all up. Not many people know how to handle wavy hair like mine and I'm impressed by what a lovely job she did. It looks sooo much better! I'm a simple girl who wants to keep the hair low maintenance, no fuss...shower and go and let it air dry. No styling or blow-drying involved. I just wanted to even it all up, too, keeping it one length. Sharon was respectful of this and didn't try to push me into any cuts or styles I didn't want. She also recommended some hair product for me, which I am always open to, but she was not pushy about that either, which I appreciate. She gave me a sample to try. She's awesome. I love her personality: friendly and kind, but also professional and focused. She did an excellent job. I'm growing my hair longer and won't need frequent haircuts, but I will be returning to her for routine maintenance to keep it from looking shabby. Thank you, Sharon! You have a happy new customer. I highly recommend this salon and Sharon. The place itself is so cute and welcoming, too. The vibe is great. read more

Just moved central and found this little gem of a salon. It's clean, chic, and the cut and highlight were top-notch. Mary was there that day and talked to me about the history of her salon (she also owns and operates a barbershop and salon in Tarrytown) and the downtown location was her first, something like open for 40+ years and had started out as a barbershop. What I liked: female business owner, historical location, great stylists, and inexpensive for what I received (in comparison to other central tx salons) Give it a try! *they also have massage and nail services too - planning on trying those out on my next visit. :) read more

Fantastic service done by Mary. She is so down to earth and makes the entire experience very enjoyable while also being amazing at what she does. I'm very particular with my hair but she exceeded my expectations in every way. read more

Great Haircut, Great conversation w/a beautiful stylist; could you ask for more? Very Clean location, and took me w/o an appointment w/a minimal wait and pleasant attitude. Wish I had a pic to show my haircut. Best that I have had in a while. I'll be there again. read more

I moved to Austin last August and have been trying to find a new place to get highlights. I am pretty low maintenance and have a difficult time finding a hair salon that will listen to me when I say "I will never, curl, blow dry etc. my hair." I find this frustrating since I listen to clients and always do what is best for them. Well, Samantha surprised me when she 100% listened to me and shaped my hair and gave me perfect highlights that will blend as my hair grows out. She also let me know what products she would recommend to make my hair not as frizzy and compliment my easy going routing. A+. She also had a charming personality. It's nice to spend a few hours with someone who is positive and kind spirited. I would absolutely recommend going here. And they use Aveda products which was a pleasant surprise. read more

This is a salon I have been excited to try because of the location. The first time I went was for a bang trim and Mary did a great job. Not many stylists have been able to get my bangs to look wispy so I will definitely get them trimmed here from now on! I set an appointment for a haircut and I am so glad I did. Mary is the first stylist IN DECADES to give my hair texture/long layers that work. The salon itself is very practical and clean. It is worth going back to! read more

Mary has been cutting my hair 17 + years. She does a great job every time. She cuts a number of family members as well and her memory is great. She often informs me about what is going on! The place is relaxed and they stay on schedule. read more

I have been getting my hair done here since I was a little tot! Shana has been doing my hair for the last few years and I'm always happy with the gentle care she gives, because I have such a tender head. My hair is always looking as good as ever when I leave and I stock up on all of my Aveda products here. I always get my eyebrows waxed here as well, because the wax they use is also gentle on the skin. Mary is a wonderful, sweet lady who always greets you as you walk in! I love supporting a local family businesses (Shana is Mary's niece and another stylist, Diamond, is another niece who is also fabulous and talkative!). read more

Worst blow dry ever. I traveled to Austin for the weekend and have an event and needed a quick blow dry. I have short hair and on the phone they told me the blow dry would be 25-35$ it ended up being $45. When I left my hair was still wet and I couldn't even run my fingers through it bc it was so knotty. They just blow dry your hair don't even section it just your hair blow dryed. And they put conditioner on my roots so my hair is already oily! My hair could have air dried better! read more

I had a coworker with an emergency - her long hair got caught in industrial equipment - so badly that her thick hair was twisted beyond repair - some hair was even ripped out at her scalp. Mary's is close by so that's who we called. Megan was very accommodating and was beyond helpful. Ours was a very unusual situation to happen, but I was so impressed by Megan's professionalism and thoughtfulness regarding what was needed (without taking the easy way out and cutting all of her hair off), and what to be careful of. Her kindness and care after a rather nerve-rattling and painful event rate 5 stars. read more

I have been a customer for over 20 years and always get compliments on my hair. Mary is a wonderful person and hair stylist without being pushy. She doesn't try to up-sell you. Mary is the best! She has been cutting, styling and coloring/highlighting my hair for many years! I won't go any other place. This place should not be listed under nail salons. I got a mani-pedi here last week (the special was a free mani when you buy a pedi) and it was the worst I've ever had. Sweet girl, but she should not be doing nails. When I learned they charge $45 for a pedicure, I was thinking it was going to be amazing for that price (my regular nail salon charges $35 for a deluxe and they bend over backwards with what they do). My toes were barely groomed, only clipped and cuticles pushed back. After an extremely brief massage on my feet (not calves too like I'm used to), she put the polish on... which I do better myself. The manicure was exactly the same way, the polish job seemed worse on my nails, it was globbed up and, again, I do a better job myself. The polish on my nails started chipping a couple HOURS later and the polish on my toes after a few days, which usually doesn't start coming off for at least a month at my regular salon. I'm sure this place does a good job with hair, as I've read with other reviews, so they need to stick with what they know. read more

Love this salon! Jessica cuts and colors my hair and always does a great job on my highlights. I love being able to take a load off, have a cold drink and get pampered while Jessica and I (and anyone else in the salon who wants to join in) chat it up. She always listens to what I want to do with my hair and executes it perfectly each time. I go to Mary's for the great hair and the great company! read more

Extremely dissatisfied. Over priced, terrible quality. The techniques my hair dresser used were bad and unprofessional. I guess this place doesn't know what sectioning hair is because mine was all blow dried at the same time. I would not recommend this place to anybody. read more

Mary's is awesmoe. I'm a 25 year old male who went to Mary's while I was a student at UT, and I recently moved back to Austin a few months ago and went back for my first haircut today. Anyone looking for a great haircut at a good price in Austin should look no further than Mary's Hair Studio. read more

Came here to get a fade and trim, ended up with a high and tight haircut that is the worst haircut I have ever had. Not only that but it was $30, I can get a fantastic haircut for $8-15 where they actually know how to cut hair. This place is a huge rip off and the stylists are poor at best. Oh, and the stylists all seemed drunk or high. read more

There are very few gems left on Austin, don't forget this place! Mary's Hair Studio is not just in a great location, will free covered parking, it an AVEDA salon with charm. I see Jessica for my cuts and color and walk out every time feeling refreshed and happy. Jessica is a master at the AVEDA color, and always has fresh ideas. She takes the time to consult with you, and always completely honest. The prices are reasonable for just about anyone, fitting well with UT student budgets or professionals alike. There is no reason to go to overpriced spas, when the salon is centrally located, has a perfect price point, skilled staff and charm. Support local! An added bonus is Mary, always there to greet you with a smile. read more
