Barfly - Horrible Things Movie Night in the bar!

The Wednesdays that are not comedy nights are live TV Game Show nights where you can play Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune, etc. for free and win silly prizes. This also starts at 8pm. These are super fun events to just drop by after a movie at Alamo.

So, with no check-ins, I never received a "write a review" reminder. One of those oddities of life I guess. This place slaps. I only learned that phrase in the last two years, so it still feels odd to say. For those unhip, unaware, or older than me folks, "Slap" is a slang verb meaning "to be excellent or amazing." I guess, this is the new amazeballs, which I actually once enjoyed using as a descriptor. Barfly (yes, as I type it, I keep hearing "Barf-Lee", which is less than appetizing), is great. This is the lounge/big bar/small stage/event area just to the left as you walk in to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Sloans Lake. Which is my favorite place to see films. If you do not like Alamo Drafthouse, you are probably one of those terrible human beings who enjoy talking and texting during films. Which if you did not know, may be fine for your living room, but is trash behavior in a movie theatre. Feel free to fight me on this. Barfly has comedy. It has game show night. It hosts groups showing horror films. It has live music. It has trivia. It has drag queen bingo (hmmm, why is there no "drag queen trivia"?). It has a full bar with solid beer offerings. It has the entire Alamo theatre menu available. It has hard working staff members (Rae and Sam are extra awesome). It has varied seating (stools, chairs -- both high & low, leather armchairs and couches). It has big televisions. It . . . it . . . it . . . slaps.

The restaurant was not busy even with college football on, so I figured that everything would be fine. You order through a QR code linked to a website per each table, which is okay. However, the website wouldn't load and said something along the lines of "water is scarce and a wait staff will be by soon." I tried other tables outside and even inside and the QR code link didn't work, including a different phone. We sat down and waited and waited and waited. I got up after 10 minutes to see if anyone could help us and it was a staff ghost town. I asked another table and they were also having issues. Eventually someone came by and we ordered (through the website) and waited and waited and waited some more. Food took forever between ordering. What's the point of a POS service with the link (point of sale not the other one) if it doesn't work??? Baja fish tacos tasted like old moldy fish. It was DISGUSTING. I ate one of the three and wanted to throw up. Chicken wings were bland. Loaded fries were okay. Kicker is that everything was INSANELY expensive. $17 for 8 small chicken wings? $14 for fish tacos that I wouldn't even consider edible. Additional fee to use the QR website? Seriously this place needs a reality check on everything across the board. I will never come here again and will recommend others to not spend money here.

We'll couldn't resist the warm, golden pretzel bites with their soft, pillowy center but the rich, slightly spicy queso combined with a great local brew while my wife enjoyed the espresso martini as a perfect bridge between a leisurely lunch and a busy evening ahead.. As my wife and friends each ventured into dishes such as the Chicken Tinga Tostada, the loaded chopped Sirloin Tacos, Tempura Cauliflower Tacos and the Ahi Tuna Bowl I couldn't help but eye thier reactions & seek out their input on the dishes (plus manage to score a few bites ) The patio itself did true to it's name sake - spacious, comfortable & energetic without feeling crowded. Groups gathered for drinks and food with friends and pets alike, and everyone seemed to be taking full advantage of a perfect Denver day and a fantastic place that's as much about the experience as it is the food

And then…read morethere are moments when they are just heavy objects being pulled toward the earth by gravity, wanting nothing more than a chair, a cooked piece of dough, and a cold glass of beer to dull the edges of the evening. The remarkable thing is that the second quest often yields the greater joy. Five of us, all varying degrees of exhausted from a long day of sightseeing, stumbled into Odell Brewing's Sloan's Lake Brewhouse at the corner of 17th and Perry. We were not looking for a miracle. We were looking for a soft place to land. We ordered our dinner, then ventured up to the rooftop patio, which looks out over the lake. I'm told that when the entire surrounding landscape isn't engulfed in flames that you can clearly see the jagged spine of the Rocky Mountains from up there. It is a very fine place to sit while the planet rotates away from the sun. They have a second bar up there that is just as well stocked as the one on the main floor, and the space was filled with the pleasant, low-grade hum of people who were glad to be alive and not currently looking at a screen. The kitchen turns out scratch-made pizzas, so we ordered a Margherita and a Garden Harvest. You must understand something about the five of us: we come from Central and Northern New Jersey. In our part of the world, opinions about pizza are not casual preferences; they are inherited like family heirlooms or chronic joint pain. To say that a group of Jersey natives found these pizzas to be genuinely good is a small miracle of regional diplomacy. They weren't trying to imitate a New York slice. They were just honest, well-baked pies with fresh ingredients, which is an honorable thing for a pizza to be. Then there was the beer. According to their website, this location houses a 10-barrel pilot system where they brew experimental, small-batch R&D beers you can't get anywhere else. I believe them. The fruited sour we sampled was bright and lively, the sort of beer that makes you wonder why so many other breweries get the style completely wrong. The porter was equally memorable, rich, dark, and smooth, with deep roasted notes that made it far too easy to drink. It was a beautiful piece of liquid craftsmanship. The staff was fast and entirely devoid of the plastic, rehearsed cheer you so often find in corporate franchises. They brought things out before we had time to grow cranky, and they seemed genuinely glad we had wandered into their corner of Denver. We had expected a purely transactional exchange of money for calories before going to sleep. Instead, we got a rooftop at dusk, exceptional beer, and the sudden, sweet realization that the day had ended exactly as it should. People are strange, fragile creatures, but occasionally we stumble into the right table at the right time.

They don't serve food, though you're able to bring in food if you'd like. I remember when Bookbar occupied this space many moons ago. I used to like that place a lot. Well, I'm also beginning to like the new life My Boy Tony has brought here. It caters to a younger crowd, whether you're bar hopping on Tennyson with a group or looking for a spot to take a hot date. For better and worse, it's a neighborhood bar at its core. The most shocking thing is how they transformed the space from the previous tenants. It has a beautiful open layout with nice furniture and design. The bartenders are generally friendly and prices are in line with similar cocktail bars in Denver. The few times I've been here I've been in a cocktail mood. Negronis and Old Fashioneds are made well and are slow sippers I enjoy. They do have a nice selection of wines that I'll have to try when it tickles my fancy. The only hiccups here for me are some really long wait times for drinks. They usually have two bartenders and sometimes it gets really backed up. No one is running the floor when I've been there bussing and wiping down tables. Though I understand with a location here it can go from being empty to completely slammed in a matter of minutes! If you're looking for a cool, comfortable bar without the pretentiousness or judgment, check out My Boy Tony.

Maybe. Probably not, but willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. And then personally curated only the most saccharine, soulless, slop they could find, really digging for the worst humanity had to offer on vinyl. It falls short of a crime. But not by much. If the US Gov't weaponizes that jukebox, we'd all be dead. It's the ICE of jukeboxes. It's served in one of those tiny, skinny glasses where the ice cubes fill 60% of it and each shot was like a half shot or less. One of the worst long islands I've had at a bar and it barely had any booze in it (which is the entire point of ordering one). This should've been the spot to get a stiff one for a good price. Boo.

The tap list reads like a Central European passport ~ German Pilsner, Baltic Porter, Roggen, Bohemian Dunkel ~ all brewed with restraint, balance, and intention. But what makes this place special isn't just the beer. It's Jerry greeting people like old friends. It's Cathy making sure you're comfortable. It's Adam brewing like he understands he's carrying legacy, not just recipes. The White Stout was the sleeper hit. Creamy body, roasty character, smooth finish ~ without the dark pour you expect. It's the kind of beer that makes you pause mid-sip and go, "Okay... they know what they're doing." The taproom feels warm and unpretentious. Industrial but inviting. You'll see regulars at the bar, flights lined up like a color wheel, and zero ego behind the counter. Seedstock doesn't scream for attention. It earns respect. If you appreciate craft beer rooted in tradition rather than trends, this is one of Denver's most underrated breweries. I'll absolutely be back ~ especially for that White Stout.
