The remarkable thing is that the second quest often yields the greater joy. Five of us, all varying degrees of exhausted from a long day of sightseeing, stumbled into Odell Brewing's Sloan's Lake Brewhouse at the corner of 17th and Perry. We were not looking for a miracle. We were looking for a soft place to land. We ordered our dinner, then ventured up to the rooftop patio, which looks out over the lake. I'm told that when the entire surrounding landscape isn't engulfed in flames that you can clearly see the jagged spine of the Rocky Mountains from up there. It is a very fine place to sit while the planet rotates away from the sun. They have a second bar up there that is just as well stocked as the one on the main floor, and the space was filled with the pleasant, low-grade hum of people who were glad to be alive and not currently looking at a screen. The kitchen turns out scratch-made pizzas, so we ordered a Margherita and a Garden Harvest. You must understand something about the five of us: we come from Central and Northern New Jersey. In our part of the world, opinions about pizza are not casual preferences; they are inherited like family heirlooms or chronic joint pain. To say that a group of Jersey natives found these pizzas to be genuinely good is a small miracle of regional diplomacy. They weren't trying to imitate a New York slice. They were just honest, well-baked pies with fresh ingredients, which is an honorable thing for a pizza to be. Then there was the beer. According to their website, this location houses a 10-barrel pilot system where they brew experimental, small-batch R&D beers you can't get anywhere else. I believe them. The fruited sour we sampled was bright and lively, the sort of beer that makes you wonder why so many other breweries get the style completely wrong. The porter was equally memorable, rich, dark, and smooth, with deep roasted notes that made it far too easy to drink. It was a beautiful piece of liquid craftsmanship. The staff was fast and entirely devoid of the plastic, rehearsed cheer you so often find in corporate franchises. They brought things out before we had time to grow cranky, and they seemed genuinely glad we had wandered into their corner of Denver. We had expected a purely transactional exchange of money for calories before going to sleep. Instead, we got a rooftop at dusk, exceptional beer, and the sudden, sweet realization that the day had ended exactly as it should. People are strange, fragile creatures, but occasionally we stumble into the right table at the right time.

In addition there is an amazing patio that is kid friendly games to play great design. I mean they rebuilt this thing amazingly. I remember when Bookbar occupied this space many moons ago. I used to like that place a lot. Well, I'm also beginning to like the new life My Boy Tony has brought here. It caters to a younger crowd, whether you're bar hopping on Tennyson with a group or looking for a spot to take a hot date. For better and worse, it's a neighborhood bar at its core. The most shocking thing is how they transformed the space from the previous tenants. It has a beautiful open layout with nice furniture and design. The bartenders are generally friendly and prices are in line with similar cocktail bars in Denver. The few times I've been here I've been in a cocktail mood. Negronis and Old Fashioneds are made well and are slow sippers I enjoy. They do have a nice selection of wines that I'll have to try when it tickles my fancy. The only hiccups here for me are some really long wait times for drinks. They usually have two bartenders and sometimes it gets really backed up. No one is running the floor when I've been there bussing and wiping down tables. Though I understand with a location here it can go from being empty to completely slammed in a matter of minutes! Maybe. Probably not, but willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. It feels like they found it on the side of the road in the middle of Iowa, dusted it off, gave it some spit shine and put it to work. And then personally curated only the most saccharine, soulless, slop they could find, really digging for the worst humanity had to offer on vinyl. It falls short of a crime. But not by much. If the US Gov't weaponizes that jukebox, we'd all be dead. It's the ICE of jukeboxes. If you can manage that and you're able to counter the irresistible urge to jam the small end of a screwdriver in your ear and wiggle it around real fast, then it's a cool bar.

But what makes this place special isn't just the beer. It's Jerry greeting people like old friends. It's Cathy making sure you're comfortable. It's Adam brewing like he understands he's carrying legacy, not just recipes. The White Stout was the sleeper hit. Creamy body, roasty character, smooth finish ~ without the dark pour you expect. It's the kind of beer that makes you pause mid-sip and go, "Okay... they know what they're doing." The taproom feels warm and unpretentious. Industrial but inviting. You'll see regulars at the bar, flights lined up like a color wheel, and zero ego behind the counter. Seedstock doesn't scream for attention. It earns respect. If you appreciate craft beer rooted in tradition rather than trends, this is one of Denver's most underrated breweries. I'll absolutely be back ~ especially for that White Stout.
