I don't appreciate the foul language used in their "drag shows"…read more Every other word is F**k, Sh**t and Nig**r. It is insulting and it gets really, really old. When I go out in the evening, it would be great if the performers would stop being so "graceless". Show some dignity (for yourself) & towards our community. Please, Keep your racists, (unnecessarily) foul language and insulting comments to yourself. Venus, who performs on Tuesday evening is funny, beautiful and sings like a professional. I recommend her shows! 9-12:00 every Tuesday night. Everybody loves the Charlie's dancers! I agree. The dancers are terrific. This lip sinking, ghetto behavior speaks CLEARLY FOR WHAT IT IS: Classless, annoying and insulting. The only reason drag does well at Charlie's between 8-12:00 pm is because we all ARE WAITING FOR THESE SHOWS TO END...! (Do that crap downstairs!) Most of my friends just want to dance, and listen to the best DJs in Denver... with the BEST SOUND SYSTEM ON CAP HILL. FYI: THE STAFF @ CHARLIE'S CAN'T BE BEAT! Excellent service. The bar & bathrooms are spotless. The staff is ALWAYS Kind, respectful & adorable. The bar is being very well managed. The "entertainment" needs TO BE REFORMED. I feel the need to express these concerns about how "out of control and offensive" these shows have become. The drag queens are USUALLY drunk. I express my criticisms out loud, because my friends are too afraid of becoming "unwelcome" @ Charlie's (and/or) in the gay community. I probably won't be welcome back...but there it is. Make the entertainment a great evening for all of us and lets do some reflecting about how we present ourselves to the public. Thank you for your attention.

We found street parking and walked over. Metal detectors and ID check at the front. Of course something buzzed for me. Quick pat down and I was in. They have a coat check which is handy. Since my last time here it's been redone. Not surprising as that was years ago. So many rooms of fun and different styles of music. Lots of bars tucked everywhere so you can always buy a drink. And food trucks outside too. We wandered in the different rooms, enjoying a drink and looking at the merchandise for sale. So many talented vendors. The VIP tickets came with a settee and bubbly. We toasted my friend and enjoyed relaxing there between our . The gender neutral restrooms threw me off a little as the urinals are out in the open. I've been in ones with stalls but this was a first for me. The alley was cool as you can play games and eat at the food truck and drink at the bar. It was cold weather so we didn't stay long in the alley. Back inside for more dancing. Little platforms to dance on. And then dancers made an appearance on the main stage. What a fun night.

What i will say is that this place definitely has an issue sith men who cant keep their hands to themselves as multiple of my friends were groped wothout consent and after we left we were approached multiple times by very drunk men one of whom started screaming at us and getting in our faces. I like this place a lot but if the manchild issue is always this bad i will be avoiding and i strongly recommend against anyone coming here alone.

This review is a bit different from my usual ones, but for good reason…read more This past Friday some friends and I attended the Jazz night in the Jungle room and loved it. We eventually transitioned to the Rose room so we could chat amongst ourselves. The space is large, with booths and tables spread out around the room. We initially made ourselves comfortable near the stage, but then quickly moved to a booth as it was larger and could accommodate the rest of our friends who planned to join us. I sat on the outer most side of the booth, with a good view of the rest of the room, and made awkward eye contact with a man, who then continued to stare me down. He then approached our table, became increasingly combative and aggressive, claiming the table was his and honestly, just seemed to be looking to fight. I write this review not to dog on the crowd, but rather remark on how safe the staff and other patrons made us feel during this encounter. We held our own, eventually insisting this distraught individual leave us alone, all the while the barista at the coffee bar watched vigilantly, using hand signals to ensure we felt safe. Another table began recording the encounter, which I think further deterred the man from his verbal assault on our group. I've experienced similar at other bars and have been left feeling more scared, but because of the way the community at the Pearl stood beside us, felt regulated after the encounter, and continued to enjoy my night. My only note is that they should lower the cost of wine by the glass, or get bigger glasses! I can purchase the same brands by the bottle at the grocery store for the cost of a glass here. I'll definitely be back

I was invited by a friend to check this place out--she mentioned it was a new lesbian bar. When I…read moresaw the address, I realized it was the old Mercury Café, which I've never been a fan of due to the parking and the general area. Had I known beforehand, I probably wouldn't have come. That said, I was surprised to actually find parking not too far away. I did pass a few questionable characters on my walk over, and I hoped my car would still be there when I got back. Once inside, I met up with my friend. Like others have mentioned, the music in the main bar area was extremely loud--too loud to hold a conversation. It was crowded, and people kept bumping into each other, but to be fair, everyone was respectful about it. No one seemed to be doing it with bad intentions. The line at the bar was chaotic, but once I finally got up there, the bartenders were super friendly and attentive. We eventually made our way to the adjoining room, and it was a completely different vibe--much quieter and more relaxed. We could actually talk. I decided to order food. One server--tall, with black hair and torn fishnets--told me I had to order at the bar. But another server, much more accommodating, let me order from her directly and took great care of us. I ordered the patty melt, and it was surprisingly good--definitely better than what the Mercury Café used to offer (which was strictly vegetarian). Ultimately, though, I don't think I'll be returning. The noise level in the main bar was just too much, and the overall environment felt uncomfortable to me. Yes, it's a bar, but the acoustics in that building are rough for the kind of crowd they attract. I did notice they host various classes upstairs, which could be a cool draw for some people--just not quite enough to get me back.

Barfly - Free Game Show Game Night every other Wednesday night!

Wednesday nights are fantastic at Barfly!…read more Every other Wednesday, there is a live, free comedy show in the bar area starting at 8pm. The Wednesdays that are not comedy nights are live TV Game Show nights where you can play Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune, etc. for free and win silly prizes. This also starts at 8pm. So, with no check-ins, I never received a "write a review" reminder. One of those oddities of life I guess. This place slaps. I only learned that phrase in the last two years, so it still feels odd to say. For those unhip, unaware, or older than me folks, "Slap" is a slang verb meaning "to be excellent or amazing." I guess, this is the new amazeballs, which I actually once enjoyed using as a descriptor. Barfly (yes, as I type it, I keep hearing "Barf-Lee", which is less than appetizing), is great. This is the lounge/big bar/small stage/event area just to the left as you walk in to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Sloans Lake. Which is my favorite place to see films. If you do not like Alamo Drafthouse, you are probably one of those terrible human beings who enjoy talking and texting during films. Which if you did not know, may be fine for your living room, but is trash behavior in a movie theatre. Feel free to fight me on this. Barfly has comedy. It has game show night. It hosts groups showing horror films. It has live music. It has trivia. It has drag queen bingo (hmmm, why is there no "drag queen trivia"?). It has a full bar with solid beer offerings. It has the entire Alamo theatre menu available. It has hard working staff members (Rae and Sam are extra awesome). It has varied seating (stools, chairs -- both high & low, leather armchairs and couches). It has big televisions. It . . . it . . . it . . . slaps.
