Orange County has no shortage of great Japanese food, including udon, but somehow, amid the crazy competition, I believe Marugame Udon is the best udon in the county. It is also surprisingly affordable. Both Orange County locations I have been to (the one in South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa and the one in Jamboree Plaza in Irvine) are sadly in very busy areas. It can be annoying to find parking and/or wait in a long line just to sit down and eat. Thankfully, the food is so good that I will go out of my way to eat there, even if it means having a super early lunch to avoid the typical noon-to-1:00 p.m. lunch crowd. The main thing I love about Marugame is its surprisingly large amount of udon options. You can get the softer-tasting broth or the stronger-tasting broth called BK broth, which is generally my personal go-to because I think it has a more savory yet smooth flavor. There is also a surprising amount of customization, from basic choices like a regular or large size, extra noodles, and whether you want the typical Sanuki-style toppings of tempura flakes and green onions. There are also options like curry udon, beef udon, pork-broth tonkotsu udon, and, more recently, rice bowls. That said, one of my favorite things about Marugame is the number of tempura options. These do not come with the udon, so you generally have to pay roughly a dollar per piece, depending on the type of meat or vegetable you get. For example, the standard tempura choice, shrimp, costs around a dollar each. Thankfully, the shrimp are fairly long and thick, with great batter and flavor. There are also other meat options, such as squid, along with plenty of vegetable options like zucchini and onion. If you are someone who eats out often and likes rewards programs, Marugame has a mobile app where you can earn points toward things like a free Spicy Bomb, extra noodles, or extra tempura. I definitely take advantage of this. Just make sure to either order through the app or save your physical receipt so you can upload it to the app. Overall, when I want great, specialized udon and tempura, you cannot go wrong with Marugame Udon in Orange County, whether you choose the South Coast Plaza location or the Jamboree Plaza location. read more

I dont usually leave bad reviews, but this was honestly one of the worst experiences I have had at a Marugame Udon. I placed a to-go order and waited over 10-15 minutes while at least 5-10 people who ordered after me got their food before I did. I finally had to ask where my order was. The guy with the head scarf and the girl just looked at each other completely clueless, Then I got my large bowl... and I actually laughed. I paid $15.61 for what looked like a sample. Mostly broth, a few noodles, and barely any toppings. I have had way better portions at the South Coast location, so avoid this one at all cost. Came on Saturday night for dinner for our udon craving. Quick service as usual and seating always available inside and outside. We both got regular size udons for tonkatsu and curry nikutama. The udon felt overcooked, noodles were softer than usual and missing the usual bouncy and chewiness. Tonkatsu flavor was slightly bland and the pork slices were pretty thin but tasted ok. The curry broth seemed not as thick as before but flavor was okay as well. The biggest disappointment was the sweet potato tempura because the sweet potato definitely tasted old. It was so dry and powdery. The tempura on the outside was slightly stale, maybe the tempura was left out for a while. The one thing that was pretty good was the chicken katsu as it was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Pros: - This location is spacious - They have my usual cold nikutama - This location has better cellular reception to get to Marugame app Cons: - This location needs better sound dampening. - I came on a chilly sprinkly day so I was craving the curry nikutama. It's not on the menu. - I went to pick up my usual chicken tempura. It wasn't there either and when I inquired about it, the lady had no idea what I was talking about, and pointed to the chicken katsu. I would say it's more like fast food/cafeteria style where everything is already pre-prepared and they put it all together when you order like an assembly line. Once you grab your tray and your order, you proceed on down the line to the toppings bar where you can add tempura flakes, wakame seaweed, cilantro and green onion. You can also pick up a few extra sides of tempura, gyoza, katsu while you're at it. You pay when you get to the end of the line. The restaurant has a decently spacious eating area and you can sit wherever you want to. We ordered the Shrimp BK, the Nikutama and the cheese katsu tomatama curry. The shrimp tempura on the Shrimp BK was pretty good but the portions are relatively small compared to the other noodle dishes we got. Flavor on the Nikutama was tasty but the beef was slightly on the tough side. The flavor of the cheese katsu tomatama curry was spicier than I expected as the restaurant staff indicated it was very mild. I had expected Japanese mild but I would say it was slightly spicier than kimchi. I was happy that all the food was piping hot. I was happy to see this location away from the madness of South Coast Plaza, even if Diamond Jamboree has its own crazy parking situation. Mom got the shrimp tempura bento, and I got the chicken katsu curry rice bowl. We agreed that the rice was cooked perfectly, and both the shrimp tempura and the chicken katsu were flavorful and delightfully crisp. Mom was a little disappointed in her soup, and thought that her bento could have used more flavor, a flavor other than the tempura dipping sauce. Wakame, cilantro, and green onions added interest to my curry rice bowl, but I kept thinking something was missing from the curry. Initially it tasted sweet, and overall it seemed to lack a depth of flavor and texture I would have liked in Japanese curry. It wasn't bad, though. The boiled vegetables were a nice addition, if a bit pricey at $3 for 1/3 cup of vegetables. The staff were patient with us even though we took a while to decide what we wanted and didn't understand the procedure for ordering (numbers on menu items really simplified things, though). The dining area was too noisy for a good conversation, especially with my aging mother. The J-Pop and K-Pop music added a youthful vibe to the space. The place you leave your trays reminded me of cafeterias in Japan, even if the Irvine patrons (including me) didn't put things in the proper labeled area. Since this is an udon shop, I should go back and get the udon. I have a feeling that the broths will provide me with the flavor experience I wanted this time around. The broth was rich and creamy, and not too salty like many other restaurants prepare their broth. Adding the toppings (tempura flakes, scallions, ginger, and crunchy seaweed) enhances the flavors. The noodles were thick and chewy, just how I like it. Would have liked more of the chashu pork but it is a more expensive item so understandable they don't add a lot of meat. How I've never reviewed this spot is pretty comedic considering how many times I've gone since opening. If you've been to the Costa Mesa (South Coast Plaza) location, then this is much of the same, with a more open space. And for that, it gets the full 5 star treatment. Service is always great, management has really chosen a team that is both polite and helpful. I have not been here once where I felt I was a burden...even during peak hours. It's hard to beat the plain Large Kitsune for $12. Beef Udon is also a great p[topm. However the only let down I've ever had was the Tomatama. It could be my own mistake, but definitely skip that cheese. The katsu, however, was crispy and perfect. Best part about this location, and I am unsure about the SCP location, is the Self-serve tempura flakes and green onions. You know who is loading up on that! Will always be back. You walk in, order your udon, self service tempura, they hand the udon to you, you pay and go sit and get your own utensils, sauces and napkins.
