I moved here from Oregon almost 2 years ago and ever since I've moved here, I always go to Juan for my car. My dad is an auto body painter / technician and owns his own shop in Oregon. His biggest fear when I moved was having car problems and he couldn't personally fix it for me. I'm a young female college student having to go into a mechanic shop alone and risking getting played. This is the only place my dad tells me to go to for any car problems because he trusts him and so do I. He has always communicated very well, makes me feel safe and comfortable, thoroughly explains what's wrong with the car in way that I can understand, and only repairs what truly only needs to be repaired. I called 11 different Smog Test locations before I called Martin's. Spoke to Juan on the phone and he was the most helpful of any that I had called. Had me read my DMV form to him over the phone and then explained what I needed. I told him I had found a coupon on www.smogtips.com for $19.75 smog test. He said yes, but that it was an additional $10 for certificate and fees. That was still the best price of the 11 smog test locations I called in the 91104, 91106, 91107 area codes. The only catch is that you have to pay cash if you use the coupon. Fine by me. Juan was super friendly, and easy to understand and service was prompt. I just found Martin's today, and I'd definitely consider going back for regular auto maintenance (since they're a full service auto repair shop. read more

I wouldn't recommend this shop at all. I know alot of people in Pasadena who rant and rave about Juan, the owner, however, i disagree. He is VERY rude to women. He's nice in the beginning, but once he's gets your business, he can be VERY VERY nasty and quite unprofessional. So ladies, if you go, please take a male. I had been going to him for about 4 years and he became very disrespectful because I asked him about turning off a sensor light, which takes all of 3 seconds. When I searched for smog checks in Yelp, many came up with 3, 4, and 5 star ratings. I thought it'd be tough to weed through the potential shops so I called a few close to Colorado Blvd. BIG mistake. They were incredibly pompous and expensive (possibly because they heard a female voice on the other end?). Luckily for me, my husband was going to be taking the car in for it's 1st smog check, so he wasn't going to waste his own time with any shop's shenanigans! I kept reading through the list, and saw a previous poster mentioned a COUPON! (This is when they reeled me in!) Sweet! I love coupons. You need to get your hands on this coupon, too. The coupon includes the smog check itself only, but even so with the cert & fees, my husband said it came out to roughly $30. (And it's cash only so go prepared.) Not too shabby compared to the $50+ in the surrounding area! His comments about his experience: - Mid morning is a great time to go. - Employees are extremely easy going, well mannered, and courteous. - They explained everything to him and never took on any attitude (he hates attitude from associates, especially since he manages CS). - He was in and out in about 20 minutes which was great since we had visitors coming over. I had my car dropped off at the shop since I work all day, and he did the diagnosis and quoted me for the repairs needed. He's honest - I left a signed, blank check with him and after I approved the repairs, he filled the check out himself for the total amount. I agree with all the other reviewers, and it's about time I posted a public thank you to Juan Carlos. I also had a positive smog experience with him and that made me take my 2002 Audi Quattro to him when Rusnak was not being so nice. He not only fixed my car at a fraction of what I was paying the dealer, but he defended me to the BAR when Rusnak refused to take responsibility for an oil leak they caused in a previous repair. He spent an hour under my car, for zero personal gain, convincing the BAR rep that Audi caused the leak. Then and only then did the rep go back to Audi to request reparation. As it turned out, they did cause the leak and were forced to repair it at no cost. I never want to buy a new car again, because as far as I'm concerned, nobody beats Juan Carlos' warranty. read more

I took my car over at Martin's Auto Repair shop a few days back. I had some suspension related issues in a used car i just bought and wanted to have someone take a look at it, narrow down the problem and then suggest what needs to be changed on the car. after going to 2 other auto repair shop's in Pasadena and getting contradicting and expensive repair estimated, i wanted to take another estimate from Martin's. I got there early enough and Juan was at the shop. He didnt have any of his mechanics IN yet so i waited for some time. Once his mechanic came in we went for a test drive. Upon returning the mechanic said he would have to look under the car to be able to see what the issue was, but he seemed positive that it would be some bushings that have worn and might need to be replaced. Upon lifting the car up, initially they couldnt find much of a problem but upon deeper inspection they have one of the bushings on both sides of the front to be worn and needed to be replaced. Juan checked if the aftermarket part was available with his sources, when he couldnt find them at their aftermarket sources, the option was to then check with the dealer. i offered him to see if we can order the part online which might be a little cheaper vs buying it from a dealer, but he had his reasons why we should get it from a dealer. I was in no rush to get it done today and would have appreciated if we could have checked a little further and found the aftermarket parts to keep the parts cost down. He got the pricing options at the dealer and discussed the options of replacing the entire assembly of what was needed vs changing the bushings only. Based on the discussion i decided to get the entire assembly changed. He ordered the part from the dealership nearby and asked them to have it delivered in a couple hours. I offered him to pick up the part since i didnt have much to do the entire day, However he insisted that they would deliver. Which they did, only a couple hours late. I would still suggest that i could have saved some $$ on parts if we could have searched a little further and waited a couple days. But thats fine. The final estimate from Juan was fair in terms of the labor costs, and they didn't want to replace any parts that were not needed to be replaced. so i liked the honest approach they took. He even checked for any open TSB's my car had which would cause this issue just to be sure. since i was local to Pasadena, Juan offered to drop me home while the car was being fixed, so that was a nice gesture as well. I routinely followed up with them to check on the status. Overall the work was done, a few hours later and both their mechanic and Juan took a test drive to make sure how it drove, i was with Juan during the test drive he took and it seemed like the repairs were done based on what was needed to be fixed. So overall it was a good experience having my car repaired at Martin's Auto Worx, I would suggest anyone who takes their car here or any other mechanic shop to double check and confirm the cost of parts and make sure the repair shop is not adding a ton of margin on top of the actual cost of the parts. He told me that my brakes needed to be repaired soon, but not right then. He told me to bring my car back in two months or so. Who does that? I arrived in Pasadena just a couple of days ago and needed an oil change and replacement headlight for an '04 Jetta. I called the dealership and was quoted $120 for the oil change and $80 for the headlight change. I then called around and got a few other prices, but Juan at Martin's was the only one who gave me a breakdown of parts and labor. Plus, when I arrived, the techs were not only friendly, but honest about everything I was going to spend and exactly what I needed to do. I ended up spending $55 for both the oil change w/ new filters AND the headlight swap. Add to that the fact that they had the best gas prices I found on my way to and from the shop, and I think you'll understand why they keep getting five stars all the way around.
