Hidden gem alert. I stopped by on a whim for dinner, and walked inside this cute bistro with a few friends. We were quickly seated and split a few items from the menu which were all excellent. We had the tartufo pizza, citrus and beet salad and brussels sprouts. Service was quick and attentive. This spot is perfect for a date or a dinner out to catch up with one or two friends. Came here for restaurant week and was not disappointed! We got the three course Prefix option for $45 which was a steal in my opinion. I got the tuna tartar, chicken mileanese and panna cheese along with drinks. The Tuna Tartar was outstanding! Very fresh and delicious, I would go back just for it alone. Brilliant local spot here in Harlem that is the perfect date night experience. Came here with my boyfriend for dinner on Friday and was blown away by Marlow Bistro! Everything from the Ambiance to the service was perfect. We had a reservation (highly recommended making a reservation as this spot gets busy) we were sat immediately near the window, which was a great spot for people watching. Our server immediately came over to greet us with water and then shortly after took our drink order; I had a dirty martini and my boyfriend had a glass of wine (if you are into bold red wines give a glass of the Thread Count a shot! So good!!) From there we ordered our dishes and here is what we had: Starter: - Salmon Rillete (really tasty almost like a tuna tartare) Main course: - Housemade Ricotta Gnocchi (best gnocchi I have had in a while, highly recommend; the brown butter really makes this dish!) - Marlow Burgers (my boyfriend said it was a perfect burger cooker to perfection- medium rare.) Both of us had fries and I can't stop talking about them! So crispy and flaky! Must try while you are here. I can't say enough about Marlow Bistro. The first thing I noticed was the ambiance of the restaurant. There is outdoor seating but we sat inside and they had the windows open so it was still nice and breezy. The decorations are beautiful, as they have flowers hanging from the ceiling. I ordered the salmon which was cooked really well and tasted fresh. My friends got the burger and Egg Benedict. I tried some of my friend's fries and it tasted really crispy, which I how I like my fries. The servers were also very attentive and kept checking up on us. Been there twice. First time was an early week happy hour. The bartender was friendly, chatting us up as we sat at the bar. We ordered two Negronis that were quite good and a pizza that was also quite tasty and well prepared. The second time was a Friday happy hour. Though he wasn't busy, the bartender (a different one from our previous visit) barely spoke with us. The Negronis we ordered were short and tasted weak, almost watered down. Marlow is a place I've never quite vibed with. The menu looks good enough. The place itself is beautiful. The service is a little slow but not unusually so for this area. I just never felt like I had an amazing meal here, especially for the money. From the looks to the setup, Marlow is set up to be a nice, fancy place for this area; this includes the servers' formal attire, the plants everywhere outside, and the ample seating outdoors as well. They also do quite a bit of philanthropy, including providing for first responders through the pandemic. Cocktails are well made if a bit pricey ($16-$20). I've had a few appetizers, including the beet salad, and typically found them to be on the small side. For mains I've typically gotten a piece of fish (either branzino or halibut); it's typically cooked fine, but doesn't really mesh with its sides or there's something else odd about the dish. It's like the place is working with the right ingredients, but it's stuck in neutral instead of being able to truly 'wow' with different flavors. At these prices, I can't be as forgiving and must expect a little more. Like I said, maybe not my kind of place. They're fine and have their following, and I certainly admire the things they do for the community though. read more

I'm currently at an engagement party at this venue, and the bartender just charged me $5 for a seltzer, and was a real asshole about it. It never would have occurred to me that soda water at a bar would be charged; the party is an open bar; and I should have been told in advance that I would be charged for this. Staff is nice But the downside is the price : it's too expensive for what it is. Chris and I dined here in order to meet a friend that lives in the adjacent building. The restaurant is charming and features a separate bar and dining area. We made reservations and were grateful that we did because the dining room totally filled within twenty minutes. Service was friendly and efficient. The food was amazing. We each chose separate pasta dishes. Portion sizes were generous but manageable for one person. My vegetarian butternut squash pasta ravioli was incredible and pillowy soft. It was truly homemade and high quality. The salad was large enough for three of us to enjoy. We ordered the cheese cake dessert and the chocolate dessert enrobed in a delicious coating. We stumbled upon this place after leaving the Cathedral of St John the Divine. There was a big sign outside saying "plant-based," so we thought it was a vegetarian restaurant and didn't bother looking at the posted menu. It's not a vegetarian restaurant. They do mark vegan and veg dishes on the menu but the proportion of them with respect to other menu items isn't noticeably different from most other restaurants. It seems silly and pretentious, and a little irritating. C'mon, we know that salads are "plant-based." Marlow doesn't even offer a plant-based burger, which is pretty common these days. That said, our waitress was very personable and attentive. Service was great. We enjoyed what we ate: beet hummus (more beety than hummusy, which is a plus imho, but we had to ask for extra pita, which came quickly); eggs florentine, which were well poached and atop a sufficiently toasted english muffin, which is sadly a bit of a rarity, so pints for that); roasted cauliflower (our waitress said that was kind of a signature dish and we can see why); and the pumpkin gnocchi. The gnocchi were not as pillowy as they could be, and seemed kind of al dente, but they came in a lovely pumpkin sauce with little bits of diced pumpkin, toasted pepitas and other crunchy toppings that really elevated the dish. So all around a pretty good meal in a cute rustic setting with sprays of fake flowers hanging from the ceiling amidst the edison bulb fixtures, and colorful throw pillows on the wooden benches. One pet peeve though. The chef was nice enough to comp us a dish of french fries, which was a nice and unexpected gesture. But the fries seemed like the industrial ones that come with a seasoned coating for longer crispiness. It was hard to reconcile that with the quality of the rest of the meal, and the black board with the restaurant's credo of supporting small farms, local suppliers, yada yada. This is a nice find up in the high rent district of Columbia University. We arrived around 5:30pm and were hoping for a table inside on a chilly evening, but because of the high reservation count we were offered a table in the enclosed outdoor patio. There were heaters available but we found the surroundings cozy and warm. The staff was attentive and helpful. Keeping the water glass full is a beautiful thing. Marlow offers a fabulous 50% off on bottles of wine from 4 to 6pm. That sets the mood for an affordable and positive dining experience. We enjoyed a very agreeable bottle of Vino Nobile. Our waiter Antonio made some solid suggestions on menu items. We found the beet salad a little too salty and sent it back after a few bites (Antonio made sure to remove the appetizer from our bill... thank you ). The burrata was quality. The burger was cooked to perfection and my beef short rib papparadelle was off the charts yummy. No room left for desserts. This was a quality dining experience. Call ahead for reservations. IF YOU HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES, WATCH OUT So so so upset with Marlow Bistrow. On both Grubhub and their website the dessert calzone lists ricotta, strawberries and Nutella. I ended up ordering one to share with my partner. Thankfully I cut into it before eating it, there were bananas and walnuts in it. As someone who has food allergies, this is seriously unacceptable. I realize that some food allergies are more uncommon than others... but you can't just add in whatever you feel like along the way. I normally love this bistro but this evenings dining experience was one that even a seasoned New Yorker had to pause to consider. My wife and I invited my sister out for dinner to celebrate her birthday. I had wanted to head to Tribeca but my wife suggested Marlow Bistro on the UWS. We'd been here before and had both enjoyed it so I readily agreed. Reservations were made and there we went. . About midway through the main course both my sister and my wife made comments about a high pitched chirping noise coming from somewhere close by. I thought it was birds or a child's toy but they both said it didn't sound like that. The couple seated at the table behind us also offhandedly commented on the noise but couldn't figure it out either. Not more than a few minutes later my wife, the couple behind us and I saw something move in front and slightly above our eye-line. At first I thought it was a cat or bird. It was neither it was a nice sized rat darting up the leafy trellis adorning the restaurant's northwest facade only about three feet from us. My sister had to turn to look up from her salmon to see our noise maker. We all watched as it disappeared into the artificial foliage above our tables and each of us made the cynical comments any well oiled New Yorker might, "well now we know it wasn't a toy", "guess he or she's headed in for the night", "wow, that was one loud rodent", "I thought it was a bat but I guess it was a good ole NYC rat". We told the waitress, she briefly squinted into the leafy décor and then asked how the food was. She then left and I guess she told someone because a while later one or two people from inside the restaurant came out to also stare into the leaves. While staring they offered "What could you do? It's New York". Shrug, shrug, ha, ha, tough guy, tough gal. Okay one rats not so bad. Everyone returned to whatever they were doing. About ten minutes later what seemed a larger, much larger rat went scampering across the patio floor in the direction of the wall and the trellis. . Now it was clear this was a problem. The server and a bus boy standing right there had watched Mr or Mrs Rodent number two go up the wall. They then both retreated. And that's when I thought it might be better to finish our remaining time inside the restaurant. Which we did. The Evening ended, coffee and tea finished, I paid the check and we headed out. We were all okay. It's New York. Expensive and gritty. So... On a positive note, Marlow's Bistro your food is still good. However on a negative note, rats running around on your restaurant's property with no one on the restaurant's staff seeming to have a handle on or really care about "Ratatouille Live at Marlow's", is bad. Very bad. To add insult to injury. There was no verbal or actionable suggestion from the staff, such as "would you like to move inside"? I had to ask if it would be possible for us to finish inside. There was no "...please allow us to offer you a coffee, dessert or something for next time". Or just a "...please please accept our humble apologies". Nothing! When our evening was over we were handed a bill, which I paid with a tip, we were told thanks and G'bye. I am as prone to good natured cynicism as anyone. Especially anyone who has been paying attention to the world's events of the last decade if not longer. But it would appear we've hit a new low if it's become okay to think it's a normal evening in the "greatest city in the world" at a mildly expensive bistro to nonchalantly accept rats racing around the out door dining area and up and down the walls as a normal Saturday evening out. Needless to say we will not be back anytime soon, if ever. Epilogue: My sister and I are native New Yorkers. We've seen quite a bit. My wife is not but she grew up on a farm so she knows a bit about nature. Still the dog slept out side or in the stables. The field mice were not allowed into or near the living areas including yards or porches, so this was indeed a new low for her. I'd suggest that the management or owners of Marlow Bistro come up with a plan of action or at least some simplistic token response to having your dining experience crashed by "rats at play". I'd also suggest that New Yorkers and Americans in general start expecting and demanding more from those with whom we do business, live, work as well as ourselves. For gods sake. BUT - the service was just so disappointing - we live in the area and really wanted this to be a regular spot but likely wont return after today. We made a reservation for 8 people at 4pm on a Sunday. Aka - early bird special and they were not busy at ALL. If the restaurant was packed I could understand slow service but we were literally the only ones seated outside and they had very few people inside. Issues: - Slowwwww service. Took forever to take our orders and even longer to get the food. - When we finished dinner our way waiter asked us if we were ready for the check - at a nice restaurant they should know to at least bring out dessert and coffee menus - made us feel like they wanted us out - The worst part - I called ahead to let them know we were celebrating my brothers birthday.
