I was kind of hoping for less of a gift shop and more a tea shop when this place was recommended to me, but it still was pretty awesome as far as their tea and spice collection were concerned. Also, it's located in Pike's Place Market so I don't think you can get away with not having some type of gift shop feel to your store. I can see how this place is loved by locals and tourists alike though, and I definitely filled up a bag full of goodies from this place to take home with me. Their home brew - the Orange Spice tea is pretty delicious and they have free samples that they give away every day. It was hard not to just stand there - away from the noise and the crowds - and sip on free tea all day. Sigh. read more

There isn't a bottled or boxed cinnamon or curry you can get off a grocery store shelf that can compare to the spices here. Even with dried and ground spices, freshness and how its prepared makes a difference. The smell in here is amazing. Makes you want to cook and try some of the spices you don't ordinarily use. As for tea, WOW, just tell the staff what kind of tea you like - strong, green, black, fruity, flowery - and they will give you an amazing recommendation. I love coming here when I come up to the market! Choose from about any herb/spice you can think of and lots and lots of yummy teas!! Didn't give it 5 stars because it's difficult to navigate if there's a line for the packing counter and because sometimes there's a long wait. That being said, it wasn't for lack of trying - the people behind the counter were fast and knowledgeable! One thing I need to remember (or it would be cool if they provided) is to bring a little notepad and pen so as you're perusing everything, you don't forget what you want when you get up to the counter. read more

Lovely, lovely store! All the smells are pretty intoxicating and so inviting!! I remember watching a show on Food Network a few years ago and saw the host going to this store. I thought if I ever go to Seattle I'll have to make a point to go there! Well now that I live out here, of course I had to stop by!! As any self proclaimed decent great cook your only as good as your arsenal of ingredients and wares. So having the right and proper spices is a pretty big deal. I love the variety they have here! I like that I'm not confined to only a small vial or jar and I think I get a better deal for my money buying in bulk! I can't buy as much or as little to my hearts content! The staff here is welcoming and friendly! I've been here a handful of times now and the staff and service is wonderful! I live in Seattle so I usually don't go down to Pike Place Market unless I have a friend or relative visiting from out of town. Don't get me wrong, I love the market. But it can be a bit crowded and expensive for a local to visit too frequently. However, I will make an exception for MarketSpice. You must understand that my girlfriend and I drink far too much tea. Last time I was in I bought almost a full pound. And that's just on a run of the mill visit. But the reason we drink so much tea is because the Earl Grey Cream tea at MarketSpice is heavenly. We drink it at breakfast, lunch, and then have it as a post dinner warm-up. I sent some to a friend in San Francisco and she traveled up to Seattle to buy a pound on her own. That's how good it is. We also love to visit MarketSpice for their spices (duh) which are much more reasonably priced than in the store. $0.74 to fill up our Coriander jar? What a deal! And as people who don't drink coffee, we have an unnatural attraction to the Hazelnut Coffee beans sold in bulk. I could become a coffee addict off that stuff alone. So please, don't just settle for the MarketSpice orange tea that they give away to a million visitors. Explore. Smell. Open all of the jars. Branch out a little bit. Walking into market spice is like walking into a wonderland of spices and special concotions. You'd almost think you would find witches brew and frog legs from the walls and walls of jars of spices. I really wanted to give this place a 5 star for the quality of spices it has to offer. Most of the teas and spices can be mixed to create your own custom blend. The pre-mixed teas are great, and I make an effort to pick up at least a few different things every time I visit Seattle. Unfortunately, the people who work there are always moody and sometimes rude (both at the register and behind the counter). This is one of my favorite shops in Seattle. Even though its often busy and nestled inside the hustle and bustle of Pike Place, it is both cozy and fascinating. I've recently become quite interested in tea, and this seems like THE spot for buying loose leaf tea. They easily have 100 varieties of tea on their wall, all ready for you to peruse and sniff at your leisure. If you're overwhelmed (like I was), their workers are happy to help you find a few selections based on your taste preferences. They also have every tea accessory you could imagine, from kettles to cups to infusers. In addition to teas, they also stock tons of spice mixes. They're not cheap but they're high quality and often salt-free, so you're getting good value for the money. They have all kinds of interesting and unique spice mixtures from all kinds of cuisines. A small portion of a seasoning in a fancy glass shaker would make a great gift for any gourmand you know. This store is a must go-to if you're in the Pike Place area. Not only is it an old gem, but the products are either grade A fancy or inexpensively useful. The tea wall features handwritten drawings on large gourd-like jars filled to the brim with every type of tea imaginable. The prices are fair and the store just smells amazing. Every day they have a new spice they're advertising where you get 10% off that specific one. It's a cute little store with great service and some history, too. I really think that Market Spice has a very nice layout and shop. But don't try to come shop here, if it is a busy weekend day, unless you know exactly what you want. We came here as part of my Pike Place Market Fresh Birthday Dinner, and we had purchased some fresh sea bass cheeks to have as part of our meal. My mother had asked one of the staff if they could make a suggestion on a spice combination to season seafood with, and the staff member asked, "well, what kind of seasoning do you like?". Valid question, but seriously, not helpful to my mom, who is culinary deficient. You ask someone for a suggestion and they answer it with a question. That makes me crazy. So, my mom and dad settled on just getting a little curry powder, which we used to season some fresh shrimp with. We would have bought more, but they weren't terribly helpful to my mother and seemed a little stressed out at the volume of the people in the shop. I enjoy visiting this shop whenever I visit Seattle, Washington. It is located in the Pike's Place marketplace and one of those must-see shops! As you enter the shop, there is a wall of glass jar filled with spices from all over the world. Another wall showcases the various teas offered in bulk. The aroma from the spices, herbs and teas was intoxicating. The spices and teas were reasonably priced. They are offered in pre-weighted bags or in bulk. I visited Seattle with my husband's family. They are from Seattle and his mom kept telling me that when we visit Pike Place Market, we had to go to this "tea store." She knows how much I love tea. While I was there, they had samples of their MarketSpice tea both hot and cold. I enjoyed both of them. I bought some to take home for my family and some for myself. I'm pregnant and caffeine is not on my radar. This shop had a fantastic and wide selection of decaffeinated teas. I bought several different kinds, including the MarketSpice tea. They had tons of tea trinkets to look at and purchase and lots of other goodies. There were tons of spices to buy in bulk; however, I didn't need any spices and left with only tea. When I run out of my tea, I might need to buy some more online, it is that good. read more

They literally have every spice you need, even the hard to find ones like Sichuan peppercorn, smoked paprika, etc. They even had extra hot cayenne pepper in different scoville units from 50,000-100,000. One of the greatest things about living in any big city is the prospect of getting real, good, spices. Market spice has such a great selection of fresh spices and blends it makes any home cook have to hold back the joy. The turnover is high so you know you are getting fresh stuff, and when you buy in bulk it is sooooo much cheaper than those stupid little McCormick jars. And, if you want whole spices to toast and grind yourself (I mean why wouldn't you) they have more than I have seen pretty much anywhere else. Also, many of their house blends are pretty tasty as well, and again, pretty cheap to boot. Then of course there is the tea. Now, they may not specialize in any particular genre, apart from their namesake of course, but I find they have a really good selection of teas, with some of their rooibus and oohlong choices being my regular picks. And most importantly, for any kitchen organization nerds, they have plain aluminum tins in 3 sizes with no transparent top or other junk. It took me forever to find these to make an Alton Brown inspired velcro cabinet spice door. They are PERFECT. read more

This place. It has every spice I've ever needed, from Indian to Middle Eastern to Mexican to Italian. The staff is always really helpful -- they're great at helping the customer manage the complexity of the offerings, you know? They help you find the right spice for your needs when there're multiple options available, and they're very knowledgeable and personable. Sometimes, I bring my own spice jars in for refills, and sometimes I stop by unprepared and just get a bunch of little baggies. Pro tip: when opening the bags, don't try to remove the sticker from the plastic. Just tear the label where the folded plastic triangle meets the bag. I also like to take pictures of the bags before opening them up if I bought something interesting (like chili powder and cinnamon -- there're a few different options), so I have a reference when it's time for a refill, or two years from now when I'm trying to remember which type of fancy salt I got that one time. Lots of teas, coffees, and blends to drool over, too. They also have fun accessories and cookbooks and stuff, but I always blow my budget at the spice counter, so I force myself to stay away from all the fun toys! (The one thing I don't buy here are vanilla beans -- you can get quality beans much, much cheaper on Ebay, strangely enough.) Ahh, love this place. read more

This place is a Seattle gem! I go here for herbs that I cook with like bay leaves, oregano, lots of dried herbs and herbal teas. You can even say that some have their own unique flavors. I think this is a wonderful place to go and buy things to bring back home as souvenirs for those that love to cook and drink tea. How there can be a half dozen tea shops in the Market I don't know but this is the only one that I've visited with regularity for the last 20 plus years. Free samples of their specialty orange and (very strong) cinnamon tea are available in the back of the store which makes for a nice little treat on cold days. The variety of teas is wonderful but even better is the complete lack of a controlled psychographic driven decor. The store is a bit of a mess, crowded and seems to have way too much stock. Labels on teas and spices were all hand written long ago by staff members with too much time in the day. All a welcome change from the raft of Starbucks-like tea shops that have started popping up elsewhere in town. Just about everything is in bulk so prices are low. If you're buying: the namesake tea is great and available in bags but Market Spice also has a great selection of Rooibos and herbal teas, the six herb blend being my favorite of the latter. read more

Forget a bull in a china store, what happens when a big guy walks into a spice shop. There is not too much they do not have here. Anything you can dream of this place has. We walked around and sampled a few things but ultimately settled just for the chili cocoa which is a delicious combination. There was a guy employee we joked that seemed to be on a few "spices" himself and out of it but the female who checked us out had good customer service. Overall, is this a "must see/ experience" of the market, no. But.. it is a good stop to grab a few known or even new spices to add to your kitchen spice cabinet. read more

This little shop is packed with greatness. it is found in a little counter at the end of Pike Place Market. They always have some type of hot beverage in the corner for you to try. The staff is always very helpful and friendly. I have been to this spot at least 6 times and the service and quality of products have not changed. There are loads and loads of teas to choose from. They will let you smell what ever tea or seasoning that they have in jars. The smallest amount of oz you can get for whatever item in the jar is a 1/2 once. I have tried the following teas: Jamaican fruit, caramel apple, pina colada, passionate fruit, almond cherry, spiced pear, spiced pear, and berry. read more

Not my favorite really. I pop in here every time i am shopping at the market, hoping to be swayed , it hasnt happened yet. This little store front is so jammed tight that you cant walk around easily. The only item i get here on a regular basis is the sugar for decorating cookies. In a pinch I'll pick up spices here or a box of tea for a far off friend who adores the Market Spice signature tea. I was looking around Seattle for a salt and pepper grinder, but for the life of me couldn't find one under $50. Even a lot of stores priced up the new "cheaper" ceramic grinders above $20!! I found them around $15 here and they are wonderful. I've filled them up with Himalayan Pink Salt and Market Spice's pepper blend. It has been great for cooking. I think it is time to get a refill and maybe some relaxing tea. read more

WOW. Simply, WOW. I've never been to a spice market that offered this much in loose form. This place is a hidden gem (with poor air circulation in the store) that is well worth the visit. I loved how you could pick up 1oz of tea if you wanted to sample something or a pound if you felt so inclined. They also had more of their more popular loose leaf teas in bags sold for those who don't feel like being traditionalists and dealing with the mess. The best part is that Market Spice now has an internet presence - simply awesome for me now that I know what is there. While smelling a tea is key when sampling a new one, the ability to just order an ounce and take a risk is well worth it for this place. I can't wait to go back. read more

MarketSpice is a cool little tea shop in Pike Place Market. They have free samples to try out before you buy. I sampled their very unique Cinnamon-Orange both in hot and iced tea formats. Though not my "cup of tea" (ha, see what I did there?) it was much better than I expected. You can choose between loose leaf and tea bags. I ended up also getting the Huckleberry and the North Western breakfast blend. I bought these because they were unique and on sale! They ended up being great cold weather teas! It's a lovely spot for gifts for visitors. For example, the Cinnamon - orange boxes come with a picture of seattle's Pike Place Market. Much better than a silly shotglass or crappy shirt! they were quite busy, so even though employees were nice and as attentive as possible, there wasn't much time for asking questions. With so much stuff, it would have been nice to be able to ask questions and get some recommendations. read more
