While in Austin looking for a good deal on a used car, I Googled for used car dealers and found Mark Weinstein Motors. The name jumped out at me because I used to babysit a kid many, MANY moons ago, with the same name. I was curious. So, I gave him a call while sitting in the car waiting for my husband, who was looking at cars at a different dealership. Mr. Weinstein is a rare breed - an honest used car salesman! I explained that we had come up for the day to look at some cars at an auction, but didn't find what we were looking for, and that we were at another dealership. I told him what we wanted, which was something very inexpensive that we could pay cash for, preferably a Honda Accord, Toyota Corolla or similar rice burner. He didn't have what we were seeking, but we had quite a nice chat about cars and things. I even told him what dealership we were at, and he said that the dealer was a good guy. I can't tell you how relieved that made me, because we were sick of being lied to and we were nearly scammed twice in San Antonio. I would strongly urge all future customers to take extra time making a decision on a vehicle and actually taking it to a certified mechanic to have it checked out before hand. That will likely ensure you save $$$$'s Here's my story... Our initial experience was positive, but quickly turned into a nightmare situation when the check engine light appeared before the check cleared... We were informed by a certified mechanic that the motor had a crack in one of the cylinders and needed to be replaced. I recognize that used-cars cars are sold as-is in Texas, but I also thought he would feel some compassion towards a client having to spend over $5k days after purchasing a vehicle from him. We are not expecting him to cover the entire cost of the repairs, but just to see if there was anything he could offer to soften the blow. I kept Mark informed along the way and we had a good conversation, but hasn't reached back after our phone conversation last week. He did half-heartedly mention the warranty, but we weren't interested based on the car-fax and cleanliness of the vehicle. There were no obvious issues, but that was wrong. I HATE buying cars. I would much rather go to the dentist. Last week I spent the week at dealerships and playing the "shell game". I was looking for a specific car which is what lead me to Mark. The price was spot on as far as Edmunds goes and 2k less than what the dealerships had listed for basically the same car or even one a year older. Mark is the owner of this small lot. He has about 20 cars at one time but I was VERY impressed with the quality. I bought a car with 50k miles and it looks, drives and smells like a new car. He only goes with the best for his lot. Mark is very easy going and his forms for the sale are very simple. My bank was pleased at how easy they were to read and understand. He was willing to stay late and accommodate me too. I looked for months for a new (used) vehicle, purchased many carfax reports, researched and test drove, spoke with many sales individuals, and sacrificed many hours to the negotiation waiting games with the sales managers. During one of my daily searches on Auto Trader a new listing popped up for Mark Weinstein Motors. It was a "unicorn" vehicle - rare in existence - an older model, incredibly low mileage, in fantastic shape (barely driven) and the listed price was in the KBB green price range (either good or great price for the vehicle's value). I reached out to Mark, who was quick to answer any and all my questions. I was in Houston and I couldn't make the trip to Austin to see the vehicle until the weekend, but he graciously agreed to hold the vehicle for me without any downpayment once I had set an appointment for a third party inspection. Despite receiving other inquiries about the vehicle, he held it for me for almost a week and even stayed a little late on Friday for my husband's and my arrival into town. The test drive and purchase process were smooth and straightforward. I can't say enough good things about my experience buying a car from Mark. I was looking for a Volvo C30, which aren't made anymore thus making finding one difficult. I found one at CarMax in Houston for $18k. Mark had almost the exact one listed, only one year older, but with half the miles for $4k cheaper! Being that I live in Houston, I didn't have the time to go back and forth to Austin to investigate the car. Mark was wonderful over the phone giving me in depth info on the car and was nothing but accommodating in allowing me to have a mechanic come out to check out the car and even take it on a test drive for me. I bought my little 2011 Mazda 2 with 96K miles from Mark Weinstein in July 2016. (A side-note: See the review on 6/6/16 from Masahiro K.---that's the car I bought! Mark had told me that the former owner was a Japanese businessman who was going back to his country---there you go!) I live very near Mark's small dealership (on the corner of Burnet and North Loop) and I'd been eyeing the cute little car on my way to the bus-stop for a month or two before I finally started doing serious car research. I did research on CarMax, etc., but nothing in my price range (under $8000) either looked as snappy as the Mazda 2 or got as good reliability reviews. And some of the Yelp reviews on other dealers that had cars I was interested in weren't quite stellar. After a couple of weeks of shopping around online, what I'd begun to think of as "my" car disappeared from Mark's lot! I thought I'd missed out. Just in case, though, I finally gave Mark a call to find out what had happened to it... Turned out it was just temporarily sitting at a Mazda dealership up the road, but it was coming back soon... The day it got back, I did a test drive. Loved it. I then made an appointment with an independent mechanic to check it out the next weekend. All good. Then came the "haggling." It wasn't really. I had a printout from Kelly Blue Book's website showing the price range for the car. Mark also had a Kelly price-range printout. He quoted one price within the range; I quoted something at a lower end of the range. We met at a price closer to mine than his. Very fair. As I mentioned above, my price range was pretty limited. I had an absolutely positive car buying experience working with Mark Weinstein himself at Mark Weinstein Motors. Mark provides detailed CarFax for his entire inventory, something not common among smaller dealerships-- great for piece of mind and knowing the complete history of any potential vehicle purchases. Although his lot is smaller, his inventory is nothing but quality used vehicles handpicked by Mark himself. Mark completely eliminated all the negative stigmas one might associate with used car lots. In my personal opinion, I believe he has very competitive prices. He even went as far as helping me choose a way of financing my automotive loan through another local financial institution, as I was having troubles with my own bank (which resulted in me getting a tremendously low interest rate). I recently bought a car from Mark. He was very kind and helpful. The location is a little off putting as his lot is very bare bones but that's to be expected for a one man show type place. He had the exact car I was looking for and I was very thrilled to purchase it! It had several large issues right off the bat, but after sinking another 2,200 into it we have a great car. I'm giving him a 4 star review because I feel if he had known the struggles we faced with the car in the first months he would just feel awful. When the problems first presented themselves he did step up without being asked to help pay for the window motors that were shorted out by the electrical issues. But that was just a taste of things to quickly take effect and reveal the real issue. I think he's a good guy and a honest dealer but buyer be warned. Even if it's the exact car you want make sure you have it looked at before you buy. Mark is not a mechanic and can not know the past of all the cars on his lot. All and all, after the dust has settled and I now have a drivable car, I love it! But have ANY used car looked over before you make a deal, from any dealer!
