I was throwing a 25th birthday for my girlfriend, I had googled places that make custom cakes and I came across Marissa's cake and a few more but she definitely had the best reviews and enough pictures for me to give it try. I asked her what I wanted, which was a Jack Daniels Cake, she said could do it and send her a picture of what I wanted. The price was not bad for what she did. I decided to give this place a try and was disappointed for my daughter's birthday. The cake was extremely dense. The top tier fell apart before we even got to the party. The inside was only held by one stick!? this was a two tier cake by the way. After I tried to doctor it up at the party I cut it and the slices start to fall apart. Now I understand why it all fell apart the cake was too dense and it was unable to hold even when slicing. I paid 200 for this cake, and it was honestly the worst cake I had ever ordered. I was instructed on how to maintain the cake up until 30 min before cutting it. Even then, the cake was dry and tasted bland, almost box caked like. The picture looked like they were running out of ink so its not the nicest imprint. Usually it wouldn't bother me so much, but for almost $100, it definitely wasn't worth it. I did not appreciate being told over the phone the alfajores are one price and being charged a higher price at the counter. I had driven 15 minutes so I decided to purchase anyway. They also charge $1 for card transactions. The alfajores used to be good they likely changed the recipe and are not worth the drive. I will be purchasing somewhere else. So my review of this place is going to change drastically, my wife ordered a cake for me for my birthday, it was nicely decorated but it was decorated with fondant which my wife had ordered to be done with buttercream frosting. I have always liked their cakes I have tried their 3 leches cake and it has been to me the best one that I have tasted. My birthday cake was by far the worst cake I have had. Completely appalling I was so disappointed with the work done to my son's graduation cake. I can't even call it quality of work because this had no quality, effort or pride put into this cake. The lady answering the phone when I called was so rude and condescending. I spoke to Marissa and got nowhere which made the situation worse. My son became upset when he saw his cake. Honestly the cake was not even ready when my mother picked it up and then they made it even worse by using a "burgundy coloring" that's not burgundy it's red. The lettering used is grotesquely painted in gold. Also, the lettering on the base are falling off. The graduation cap seriously looks like it was done by a beginner pastry chef. Marissa's Cakes should be ashamed of this work and think it is okay for them to deliver this type of work to their paying customers. read more

My first cake was a Nightmare before Christmas cake for my birthday! (Halloween baby here!) And I had a small vision and asked them to be creative and they did an amazing job! Last Halloween I asked for a Guardians of the Galaxy birthday cake themed to the attraction at Disneyland and she did an amazing job with all that detail and color scheme! I also ordered an engagement cake and the flavors, color schemes, decorations, and the way the cakes look visually are stunning! Will keep ordering cakes here! I saw that they printed a picture of the cake and stapled it to the papers/receipts and put it in a file. All was done and we left. My mouth dropped! She handed me the plate and I proceeded to taste it, making sure that I got a piece of the brown outside, I could literally cry. It was a nightmare. My other daughter came with her piece of cake that was from the center, so none of the brown stuff from the outside. Naturally I want to compare one piece to the other, and nothing in the world will convince me that the "strawberry" cake I was tasting wasn't a box of pillsbury cake with a bunch of pudding to make it "moist." I really want to call them and ask if we drove all the way to Downey to pay for BOX cake for a wedding. Did I think it could get worse? No. Did it actually get worse, yes. Kids being kids, they'll say what's on their mind. Most of the kids came to sit at the table next to us and I can hear them ALL saying the the cake was "disgusting," "it's going to make me throw up," "I have a nasty taste in my mouth," "ew," and just hating the one thing they were all excited about. Some of them didn't even bother to eat the rest, they left it sitting there. For a CHILD to not like cake really said it all. It was a total mess. Don't waste your time or money buying anything here. Yes the cakes look cute and pretty in the display but they're not worth the time or money. Go to professionals who know what they're doing and don't use pillsbury box cake.
