I always pass by this place and stopped in as part of the June Agave Challenge. Mariscos El Rey has a theme and they commit! I felt like I was at a Disney-themed restaurant with thatched roof huts, tiki masks, and sea animals painted on the walls. If you want seafood, this appears to be the place to go with their extensive menu and seafood offerings. I only had beverages here, though. Our server was friendly but busy. The Jamarita was a slushie full of spice and hibiscus. We asked them to make it less sweet and appreciated the accommodation. The Mezcalita had no hint of smokiness from the mezcal since it was overpowered by the black pepper floating in the drink and was mostly ice. Very disappointed. Denver isn't known for great food but you usually can't go wrong with Mexican. I got chicken fajitas with barely can chicken and it literally had no taste, and oddly the chicken was cooked tomatoes which wasn't specified on their menu. Great menu and drink selection. There's definitely something for everyone if you like seafood. They're always busy but busiest around lunch and evenings. Live music is always going so it's always loud (something to keep in mind) You also have musicians walking around asking if you'd like them to play a specific song for you which is cool. This is definitely not the place to come to if you're looking for a quiet laid back meal but has a lot of delicious seafood dishes and sushi to choose from. The one thing I'll say is it's very hard to get your servers attention throughout your visit. Our server was very attentive but would take a very long time to come back to us whether that be to bring the check, bring back our debit card or even just to check on the table. The total time it took from asking for the bill and receiving a receipt with our debit card back was coming close to 30 minutes. Came across this place when I noticed a long line out the door when driving by. First thing to know is that this is a seafood restaurant with super fresh ingredients. I went with a group and here are the highlights of what we ordered. - Fish Ceviche - Shrimp with Special Spicy Sauce (Camarones Cucarachos) - Guacamole - Oysters - Shrimp Trio - Pineapple, Shrimp, Steak, Chicken Fajitas (Fajipiña) The Fish Ceviche, Spicy Shrimp, and the Shrimp Trio were my favorites. Such high quality and fresh seafood, which can be tough to find in this landlocked state. I was floored by the Spicy Shrimp. Probably the best shrimp I've had in Denver. They come whole and are 100% worth the trouble of peeling each one. I would pass on the oysters though. They are huge but lack flavor. Went in here for lunch around 1:00pm and were seated immediately. No wait staff ever came to check on us after 5 minutes. Waited another 5 minutes and still nothing. They were not busy. I went to the host station and asked for a wait staff to come help us. They were vague and said they would see what they could do for us. After 15 total minutes, we left. Oh where to begin......I apologize in advanced for such a lengthy review. let's start with 3 positive things. We had a party of 10, we were seated promptly. Awesome! Chips and salsa were fine. Average. The server was friendly. That ends everything positive about our experience here. Food took more 30mins, which I didn't really mind as we were all talking and spending time with our family. Our food came out all at separate times I will say i should have sent it back right away not sure why I didn't. A part of me didn't want to be rude. I ordered the carne asada, cold cold cold and flavorless..... it was obviously sitting out for quite sometime. Also had no knife to cut the incredibly tough piece of meat..... I have never had a carne Asada as tough and leathery as this one. I had to borrow a knife that came with my nephews meal.... My sister has a piece of hair on her beans, again should have sent it back and she usually does... I guess we were all in a good mood today. We didn't mention the hair... and her dish the carne machaca was so salty but with no depth of flavor. We all got our meals except for one person he had to sit awkwardly while the rest us began eating. My daughter got the sushi we probably shouldn't have ordered sushi at a Mexican restaurant but we thought hey what the heck let's order it. It was obviously premade and ended up making her sick 30mins later as she was vomiting in the woman's restroom. The sushi from kings Soopers is so much Better. They group also order another sushi dish that was call the dragon roll. It was the same sushi as the California roll but with some imitation crab meat on top......Again probably not in our best interest to have ordered sushi at a Mexican restaurant. The appetizer came 25mins after the meals. And there was a big color difference between the dishes that were served. One the fried fish options was so much darker than the rest, it was more than likely fried multiple times. Who knows how many times that thing was fried to bring it up to temp.... My husband ended up complaining to the server as we were wrapping up about the app obviously being refried.....and about the food not being fresh. And that was the end of it......nothing was done to remedy a terrible meal. Huge waste of $336 we a type of family that clears our plates. But we left 85% of the food on the table. Our faults for not saying something at the beginning. I think from now on I will no longer suffer in silence eating cold food and paying for it. If you like this place you A. Must not know how to cook or B. You like crappy food. Eat here and you will always remember it because of terrible it was. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant, I have been here three times within the last month. The staff is very friendly and the service is pretty fast unless it's a busy day for them. I had the steak and shrimp entree. I haven't had a better steak from anywhere else. The steak is always tender and cooked to perfection. They always keep the restaurant clean. Sometimes they have live music or even karaoke which is always fun. So if your looking for a spot to hang out eat good food and listen to music this is the spot for sure. I genuinely love this place and it has always been my go to because the food is amazing! However, recently ordered some ceviche to go. I usually get this non spicy. I got home and realized they had just poured tomato juice with a bunch of large chunks of tomato pieces into the ceviche instead on non spicy salsa (which i have had before so i know they can do this) I called and spoke to the host and she said "you ordered no sauce" i said no i said i want this non spicy. I asked for them to make it right and they said "all we can do is give you sauce" excuse me? They almost gave me a cocktail instead of ceviche. I spoke to the manager and he was extremely rude. We decided to try a new place and we won't go back. It was so loud with the bands playing you couldn't even visit. Our friends husband speaks Spanish and ordered a pitcher of margaritas. The waitress came back 4 different times like she didn't understand what a pitcher of margaritas were. It took 40 mins to get a side of guacamole and all it ended up being was smashed avocado's and lime juice. We ordered our dinner, finally was brought out except our friends wife's food, it was another 15 minutes before her husband went to the kitchen and complained to the chef, after she got her food he did come out a couple times to check up on things.
