Came here for NYE and to watch College Football, both of which turned out to be a great time here! Server was extremely friendly and food came out quick. Really liked the burger and fries. Plenty of beers on tap and sitting in the upstairs open air section even during the winter.

Sliders and Fried Pickles

3/10/25 Ate List: Sliders App - 6.2 Fried Pickles - 6.5 It's Mario's. And it's Mar 10, so I mean it was a perfect excuse to try it. It's a local institution. A local chain known for typically getting overcrowded and overrun with college students. With that reputation, typically with that comes the belief "their food is awful." However, for Mario's in Shadyside, "their food is fine." For happy hour their apps were $7 each which isn't terrible. The food was fully cooked which was great. Would likely not do the sliders again but I'd consider the fried pickles, for sure.

Your average local neighborhood chill bar. Darts, tunes, pizza, bar food. Has Guinness on draft.

We ended up at Mario's around 7pm on Wednesday night and were pleasantly surprised by how quiet it was. There were plenty of seats to choose from, and while there were other people there it didn't feel busy or chaotic like it may be on the weekends. Our server was friendly and attentive, and food took about 20 minutes. Both the cheeseburger and steak sandwich were delicious. Regular fries were also great, but the sweet potato fries were covered in sugar which we weren't expecting. I would definitely consider the sweet potato fries to be a dessert, and wouldn't order them again. Overall, it was a nice, relaxed dinner and I would return again on a Wednesday.

Nut friendly establishment: I don't think much of their bar food has nuts if any. I went for a larger event that booked out the top floor and our catered food had no nuts. A cozy bar in Shadyside that is bigger on the inside than it looks. The first floor has a beer hall-like vibe with high tables to seat 2-4, and a bench with tables and chairs to seat 1-2. The bar is very long with a decently large well to mid-tier liquor selection There's a raised area in the back with more seating. Upstairs after a very narrow stairway are two more bar areas and tables for larger groups, including a large communal table. The heating upstairs is strong. There is nowhere to leave a jacket except on your chair, and you definitely won't need one when all of the heaters are on. Electronics darts machines are present on both the first and second floor, costing $0.75/person/round. There are nightly drink specials and a happy hour M-F 5-7PM. Normal beer prices are $4.25 for something like a Bud Light, $5.25 for mid-tier lagers like a blue moon, $6.25 for a draft craft beer like a local IPA, and $7.25 for stronger craft beers. I ordered a long island iced tea which was $7.50 and made reasonably well (a little light and diluted by too much ice). The food was reasonably good bar food with the crab rangoons being a nice crispy surprise. The chicken fingers were better than Stack'd and also crispy. I didn't try the pizza but it looked good. Two major blunders happened while I was at Mario's: Firstly, I asked one of the bartenders if they had anything local on draft, and she said no. This was blatantly wrong as I noticed when I went back for a second round, as the Brotherly Love Hazy IPA is local enough to Pittsburgh. They also had several bottles of a local lager that was not the best. Secondly, as we were starting a game of darts, the machine froze. We had to flag a bartender down to reset the machine, and they refused to refund us for the cost of the game. It's a small amount but this rudeness in service was off-putting and we didn't want to try to play another round if the machine would eat our money again. Overall, a nice place to host events or grab a cheap drink during a special. Got a little full as I left around 9PM on a Friday, but there was still space available to be comfortable.

What a great place that we found on a Saturday afternoon to watch college football games. We easily found a place at the bar and enjoyed Buffalo Chicken Dip with grilled pita chips and tortilla chips. The menu is small, but plenty of good bar food choices. For lunch I ordered the PGH Chicken Salad. It was a HUGE amount of chicken with melted cheese and fried onions topped on a salad with fries! AMAZING! The bartender was friendly, helpful and delivered great service. I recommend Mario's for a drink or a bite to eat.

I came here for the first time with some friends, it was surprisingly really hot in there. They had all the heat lamps on that are above the tables.

We were in town visiting and looking for a sports bar to watch some Sunday football. Thank goodness these folks have the Football package with Directv! Pretty good crowd for a Sunday. Food: we had the Cajun wings and potatoes skins. Typical bar style food but the potato skins were a little small. All and all we enjoyed our experience and would come back for Sunday football.

Casual bar with yummy food that's not overpriced and tastes delicious . The bar is seat yourself, so be prepared to find your own way around the dining areas. Friendly bartenders and waiters. Be warned that it can get pretty rowdy during sports events and on the weekends (well, it is a sports bar so that's to be expected).

Elevated bar food was a surprise to me for this being a bar, and the appetizer we had were really good. Try the shot wheel, it's fun!

They turned the volume of the music lower and even adjusted the heat as it was just the two of us back there the waitress was still very attentive and helpful although she could have easily forgot about us. I was sold on the chai apple martini, even though I was hesitant because it felt more like a Christmas drink and it was February, but it was delicious and I got another one. I ordered the pork chop medium well the sauce was delicious. However, the pork chop was dry. I still ate the whole thing because the sauce and everything accompanying it was amazing. My friend ordered the pesto pasta, which I tried. I really enjoyed it too, especially the Barrata. his steak was also ordered medium well and was drier than my pork chop. I couldn't eat it, but luckily it was not my meal. He did didn't seem to mind too much. The vibes were high all night, even though we were in the back partly because of the waitress, but mostly because of what seemed to be almost a Rihanna only playlist lol

Their beers are excellent; I am an IPA guy and they always have two beers on special. Last time I got a decent IPA, 20 oz worth, for $5 because it was a special. My wife and I split the chicken sandwich and they divided the sandwich and fries on to two plates without asking. Their fries are really good; their fries are fresh cut and perfect. The environment is quiet and not rushed. Service is very good. I can say that we will be regulars here; close location and nothing to tell me to go elsewhere.

My friend and I come here every Friday for happy hour. Over the past few weeks, we noticed that our tabs didn't seem to match what we were actually drinking, so this time I decided to ask for our receipts. That's when we saw we were both charged for shots of Espolón tequila--something neither of us ordered. I was drinking margaritas and always ask for well tequila in mixed drinks. This makes me wonder how many times we've been charged for drinks we never had. Completely unacceptable. When we brought this up, we were told to speak with the manager to correct the tab. He was extremely rude and immediately accused us of ordering the shots, even though he wasn't present. He was more focused on watching RuPaul than helping. He then claimed my card had been declined weeks earlier, which forced me to call my bank and dispute a double charge. Thanks for the extra hassle. You come here expecting a good time and leave not wanting to return. Management clearly needs to address issues with staff to prevent this from continuing. That so-called manager has no business working in customer service. I've only seen him on Fridays and Saturdays--about 5'10", skinny, wearing sweats and a gray Carhartt beanie. He's always rude, but this encounter was beyond the limit. This happened around 9-10pm in the middle bar. If you decide to come here, be careful and always ask for your receipt--otherwise, you may end up overcharged.

We showed up for a Saturday lunch ahead of a snow storm, and the overall experience was good. The staff were friendly. There were clearly some number of regulars around. The space is a bit old and drafty, but that just adds a level of character. In terms of the food, we ordered a few salads and a half reuben (part of the lunch special), plus an Italian flatbread. Nothing was exceptional, but everything was nicely prepared and presented. The vegetables in the salad were fresh and crisp. The flatbread was good but not particularly noteworthy. My partner liked the rueben, but thought it could use a little more sauerkraut. The Guinness was fresh and nicely poured. All told, this was a good experience. Understand that this is more of a neighborhood hang than a destination, but it excels at filling that role.
