I have been a Marin Tree Pros client for over a decade. Jon Black is licensed arborist, and as a result provides advice on when it is appropriate, or not okay, to prune certain types of trees. He has proven to be responsive, capable and reliable. Jon and crew have additional skills extending beyond tree and yard work. He just cleaned my downspouts, diagnosed blockages, procured new drainage hose lines, put them all together and reconnected usable hoses. We needed tree trimming for a large live oak and a pear tree. We had the oak tree trimmed about a year ago by another company but did an inadequate job. We contracted Marin Tree Pros who did an outstanding job. The owner explained in detail, using a laser pointer, their proposed work. He walked his team through work when the crew got to our home. The crew checked with us during their work to make sure that the work completely satisfied our requirements. They were careful not to damage any of the other plantings, and very importantly the solar panels under the oak tree limbs. They did a very thorough job, with great attention to detail. I have used Marin Tree Pros for many years now. Today Jon and his team arrived promptly and within a couple of hours they trimmed several large trees, including two tall redwoods, as well as many smaller trees and bushes. Jon, a certified arborist, is extremely knowledgeable about the proper way to cut off branches so as not to damage the tree. The clean up exceeded my expectations. Jon Black and the 5-member team from MARIN TREE PROS (not to be confused with other businesses with similar names) recently trimmed many trees on my property including Birch, Chinese Pistache, Bay, fruit trees and a 35ft Modesto Ash. Jon has worked on our trees for over 10 years.The ash tree required a 10+ft crown reduction and reshaping which was done with precision and skill to maintain branches for Barn Owls and other birds that frequently visit. I've always been impressed with the high quality of his work, his presence on the job, and his communication of my needs to his crew. I've not been disappointed. They were careful not to damage the newly installed solar panels on the roof and the plantings and vegetable garden below the tree. In addition to more light in the yard I also have a restored view of Mt. Tam. The team was prompt, friendly and professional and clean up was impeccable. And it's a great value too! I would not award any star if this was an option but I had to give one in order to submit a review. But one star is not even warranted. I wish I had read the other bad reviews before I used John Black. I had the WORST experience working with him. Like others have reported here, he is a dishonest 'sheister' and con artist, incredibly rude and worst of all, not competent and ruined my trees. Proceed at your own peril and whatever you do, do not proceed without a written quote. John refused to give me one and I stupidly used him anyway. He ultimately charged me considerably more than quoted and charged for things that were not even legit. He was the only guy I that was available to do the job within my timeframe. Now I know why he had open availability when no one else was available for 6 weeks. read more

As beautiful as it was, over the years the tree had become a potential fire hazard. The fire department had required the tree to be cut back the prior year and it no longer looked very attractive, so Jon and his crew did a marvelous job of cutting it down - right close to the ground - with absolutely no damage to my home... Amazing! The job was completed quickly and professionally. Jon also noted that the neighbor's young row of Japanese maples on the other side of the house were close to touching the outer wall of my home, also creating a potential fire hazard. We have a very large liquid Amber tree on our property that had branches break off of during the last storm that punched a hole in our roof! We needed someone to come out to do a pruning and limb removal on this tree. I called several companies, some did not even bother to return my call, and others didn't bother to come out to give an estimate. John Black was the only one that answered my call. He came out the next day to take a look at the tree and give me an estimate, and was always in contact with me via phone or text the entire time. The other tree companies told me that the liquid Amber was diseased and needed to be removed. Jon pointed out to me that no, the tree was not diseased and actually was in the process of healing where there has been damage on the trunk. He gave me an estimate and left it so that I would contact him one way or another. I was impressed with his professionalism and knowledge, and the fact that he was willing to be paid less to save the tree then to go ahead and take the bigger job of removing it. I was also impressed to see that he is diamond certified, licensed, bonded and insured. Some of the other companies that came out could not provide any proof of insurance. We decided to choose Tree pros based on that. They came exactly when they said they would, and did a beautiful job of aesthetically pruning the tree. They thinned it out, removed all the dead branches, and large limbs that were hanging over our house and the powerlines all the while keeping the tree in a beautiful shape. I can hardly wait to see what it's going to look like in the spring. All the debris was removed, they raked the grass and cleaned up any excess sawdust. They left the yard in as good or better shape than when they arrived. I was also given the added bonus of having Jon tell me how to prune my fig tree! I'm very happy with the work that was done at my home in Novato today. I've been putting off decisions about knocking back trees, pruning, removing, etc.... Called Tree Pros after receiving that blue envelope with coupons for local services and after meeting with John last Friday. He seems very knowledgeable about the trees and what makes sense to work on now and what shouldn't be worked on at this time, seasonally. Here is it Monday, and the work is just being completed. I'm so happy with the results. They got it all accomplished, left me with firewood, too. I have so much more light in my backyard. John wrote a detailed list of what we agreed to and arrived on time.... his workers were very responsible and hard working. VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER HERE! We had Live Oak overtaking our hill in back of house and blocking our view. Our neighbor has been using Tree Pros for years so we called them and so happy we did. I showed John what we wanted and he gave us great advise as to how it should be done which showed us that he was very experienced. John and his crew showed up on time and went right to work. His crew was careful and polite. I watched them work and John has trained them well. They cut and trimmed those ugly Live Oaks into beautiful sculptured art. They weed wracked our hill, cleaned up brush and now it is once again a beautiful part of our property. We also had them do some work in front which we are glad we had them do it. Commutation is very important when you hire someone to work on your house and there was no problem here, everything was exactly as we wanted. read more

John Black of Tree Pros has taken care of our trees for years and we continue to be extremely happy with the work he has done for us. The Tree Pros crews complete their work in a very short time and always do a great job of cleaning up the areas they have worked on. We live in a heavily wooded area and in order to maintain our view and to give our home light, we have had to have many of our older trees trimmed, cut-back, windowed, and shaped. John is always professional and knowledgable about all of the trees we have on our property. When it comes to our view, he sees the possibilities that we aren't able to see. Tree Pros does an adequate job but in 2004, Paul, our estimator, whom I assumed was an arborist, did not correctly identify two common trees that I knew the names of! That made me wary in the beginning. I did not call them back in following years because I felt they did not listen to exactly what I had wanted and overpruned some of our trees. If you just want a lot of stuff lopped off, the growth will come back so it's not like they will ruin anything, but, I found that another company in San Rafael did a much more specific and careful job. read more

Wow! I don't understand the negative reviews. We had an enormous Pine tree removed from our yard that was getting to close to our bedroom. With 7 men and the boss watching every move, the tree was removed in less then 4 hours. When we returned home, the yard was so clean, you wouldn't believe anyone had done all of that work! 28 years experience, fully insured, licensed, and certified, I couldn't be happier. We moved to our new home in Mill Valley and we had to take care of the yard that was not in a good shape. We needed to remove many trees. We did a market research and we selected/met with 4 companies. Our first meeting with tree Pros was with Paul Black who took more than an hour to explain/teach us many things (that we did not obviously knew) about what we had/needed-to-do in the yard. I had a large tree (~75 feet) and some other trees and large bushes that needed removing due to the recent storms. I called John and Tree Pros and he not only came over the next morning, but they were able to start the job and finish all that same day! Every other place I called required an appointment which were days/weeks out then start dates far after that. John's crew was amazing, they were courteous, fast, and cleaned up everything so well, they even protected my lawn with tarps so the sawdust wouldn't get all over. They were also very competitively priced and did a great job of being transparent as to what all the costs would be, and did several things to help keep the cost down.
