I have been in property management for 20+ years, and have been around work crews overseeing and facilitating projects, including large landscaping jobs. Jon's crew is by far the best team I have ever witnessed doing a large landscaping job, fire preparedness project in Mill Valley. They were efficient, kind, all worked well together like a well oiled machine. You could tell these guys liked what they did and were good at it, and that should speak volumes about the company and boss they work for. Pictures speak a thousand words. read more

I've had my trees trimmed many times during the past 33 years. Jon and his crew did the best job of anyone who has trimmed my trees. Artfully done and everyone who has seen his work was impressed. read more

Marin Tree Pro trimmed trees for us when we purchased our homed our home in fall of 2022. They were on time and priced right. Last week needed a consultation, called John Black, he showed up within an hour and gave us plenty of good advice with no charge. We recommend them and will call for future tree work. read more

I have been a Marin Tree Pros client for over a decade. Jon Black is licensed arborist, and as a result provides advice on when it is appropriate, or not okay, to prune certain types of trees. He has proven to be responsive, capable and reliable. Jon and crew have additional skills extending beyond tree and yard work. He just cleaned my downspouts, diagnosed blockages, procured new drainage hose lines, put them all together and reconnected usable hoses. Recent work was done in connection with local Southern Marin Fire District inspection recommendations. Jon also noted and offered to dispose of old paint for me. Jon is well staffed. He and his crew work together efficiently and are not afraid of taking the often time-consuming steps required to properly diagnose an issue, and then making trips to the hardware store to obtain what needs to be done to address the project. read more

Great job! Long overdue trim for two trees and a few other overgrown trees and shrubs. Jon was great and reviewed with me the work that could/should be done. His crew did a great job and cleaned everything up. Wouldn't know they were here. He was highly recommended by a couple of friends and he didn't disappoint! read more

The tree pros are hard workers!! They did a beautiful job on our Queen palm. The clean up and care for plants in the surrounding area were done with consideration. Ps This is the second time we used Tree Pros read more

We couldn't have been more pleased with the work of Jon and his crew, very professional and efficient with a crew of six to take some major limbs of several trees. He did some hedge and tree pruning as well, and gave us thoughts on preserving our fence. Good value for the quality of work, not to mention Jon is a very cool and thoughtful guy. read more

We have had Tree Pros do work for us several times since 2012. We recently contacted Jon Black to give us advice on how to treat our ailing Buckthorns. He was very knowledgeable and gave us honest and helpful advice about the condition of our trees and what could be done to help them. I would highly recommend them. read more

We needed tree trimming for a large live oak and a pear tree. We had the oak tree trimmed about a year ago by another company but did an inadequate job. We contracted Marin Tree Pros who did an outstanding job. The owner explained in detail, using a laser pointer, their proposed work. He walked his team through work when the crew got to our home. The crew checked with us during their work to make sure that the work completely satisfied our requirements. They were careful not to damage any of the other plantings, and very importantly the solar panels under the oak tree limbs. They did a very thorough job, with great attention to detail. The area was left cleaner than it was prior to their work. Now need to explain to my wife why I can't do such a great cleanup job. read more

I have used Marin Tree Pros for many years now. Today Jon and his team arrived promptly and within a couple of hours they trimmed several large trees, including two tall redwoods, as well as many smaller trees and bushes. Jon, a certified arborist, is extremely knowledgeable about the proper way to cut off branches so as not to damage the tree. The clean up exceeded my expectations. As always, I was pleased with their efficiency and more than pleased with the results. And the price was very fair. Highly recommended. read more

Truly outstanding job! Jon and his crew trimmed our trees quickly & professionally. I do not think we have ever had the owner accompany his crew on a job- Jon guided his crew via laser pointer, consulting with us to ensure we were happy with the work and maximizing our view of the mountains. Jon's knowledgeable advice was much appreciated. Their attention to detail was fantastic- they even emptied a bin with yard cuttings I had left in the yard. Great value- thanks, John! There are some similarly named companies, so be sure to contact "Marin Tree Pros" located in Mill Valley. read more

No star if I could. Horrible experience with Mr.Black. Sleazy, utterly dishonest and downright rude. Stay well away.

Jon Black and the 5-member team from MARIN TREE PROS (not to be confused with other businesses with similar names) recently trimmed many trees on my property including Birch, Chinese Pistache, Bay, fruit trees and a 35ft Modesto Ash. Jon has worked on our trees for over 10 years. The ash tree required a 10+ft crown reduction and reshaping which was done with precision and skill to maintain branches for Barn Owls and other birds that frequently visit. I've always been impressed with the high quality of his work, his presence on the job, and his communication of my needs to his crew. I've not been disappointed. They were careful not to damage the newly installed solar panels on the roof and the plantings and vegetable garden below the tree. In addition to more light in the yard I also have a restored view of Mt. Tam. The team was prompt, friendly and professional and clean up was impeccable. And it's a great value too! I look forward to working with MARIN TREE PROS in the future for tree and landscaping work. read more

Marin Tree Pros trimmed all the trees on my property two weeks ago. Lots of material removed and trees shaped without the trees looking as if they were butchered. great subtle approach really enhanced the look of my yard. Fair price as well. highly recommend Jon and his crew. read more

Jon and his crew are the absolute best! They are all very professional, friendly, extremely knowledgeable, hard working, affordable and on time. They pruned my Pepper Tree and removed some Oleanders along the outside of my fence line. Jon's crew has also done a terrific job of general yard clean up. I can't speak more highly of them! I was lucky to find them and will certainly call them for work in the future. If you need tree work they are the ones to call. read more

I would not award any star if this was an option but I had to give one in order to submit a review. But one star is not even warranted. I wish I had read the other bad reviews before I used John Black. I had the WORST experience working with him. Like others have reported here, he is a dishonest 'sheister' and con artist, incredibly rude and worst of all, not competent and ruined my trees. Proceed at your own peril and whatever you do, do not proceed without a written quote. John refused to give me one and I stupidly used him anyway. He ultimately charged me considerably more than quoted and charged for things that were not even legit. He was the only guy I that was available to do the job within my timeframe. Now I know why he had open availability when no one else was available for 6 weeks. read more

John is the BEST. His crews are very professional and if you want to see hustle, stick around and watch them clear brush, trim trees and clean your yard faster than you though possible. We use Tree Pros usually about 2x/year and they always do a great job. Most recently they pruned our fig tree -- we had been avoiding the task -- and John knew just what to do. Great part of the community in Mill Valley. Love chatting with John and getting our trees happy. read more

I called Tree Pros in Marin County after much due diligence. I had them remove a tree in front of our home. They were reasonably priced and extremely knowledgeable! Jon and his team are great!! We had them do a lot of work for us this past week and they are fast, efficient and reliable. They don't leave a trace behind them either. I have Used the company Tree Pro's to maintain and make fire safe my yard for years. Over time I have gotten to know Jon Black, the Owner and proprietor of Tree Pro's. He is so friendly and professional, and does amazing work. He is a native of Mill Valley, he and his crew are so professional and when they are done everything is beautiful and cleaned up and all debris removed and the yard looks amazing. I recommend Tree Pro's wholeheartedly - sincerely, Stephanie read more

Jon Black and Marin Tree Pros did a GREAT job removing a large Japanese maple planted very, very close to my house and porch overhang. As beautiful as it was, over the years the tree had become a potential fire hazard. The fire department had required the tree to be cut back the prior year and it no longer looked very attractive, so Jon and his crew did a marvelous job of cutting it down - right close to the ground - with absolutely no damage to my home... Amazing! The job was completed quickly and professionally. Jon also noted that the neighbor's young row of Japanese maples on the other side of the house were close to touching the outer wall of my home, also creating a potential fire hazard. That lengthy row of trees was professionally and very artistically trimmed as well... I was very pleased with the professionalism and skill of the crew and I highly recommend Jon Black and Marin Tree Pros... read more

One of the worst tree worker ever. Overpriced and did a horrible job on my trees. He butchered them to no return. Now I might have to have them removed cause a friend of mine how usually do my trees says he might have killed them. My friend is supper busy and didn't have time to work on my trees till 6-8 weeks. Jon Black is a con artist and a liar. Never gave a written quote read more

These guys did an absolutely HORRIBLE job. Not only were they incredibly rude, but they did not do the job contracted. DO NOT work with these guys under any circumstances. read more

I agree with the other review, however our experience was worse. The owner, John, is a sleazy sales type who will say anythng to get your business, but it's clear that the basic knowledge of trees is missing. We had Marin Arborist come and fix what had been messed up. read more

We have a very large liquid Amber tree on our property that had branches break off of during the last storm that punched a hole in our roof! We needed someone to come out to do a pruning and limb removal on this tree. I called several companies, some did not even bother to return my call, and others didn't bother to come out to give an estimate. John Black was the only one that answered my call. He came out the next day to take a look at the tree and give me an estimate, and was always in contact with me via phone or text the entire time. The other tree companies told me that the liquid Amber was diseased and needed to be removed. Jon pointed out to me that no, the tree was not diseased and actually was in the process of healing where there has been damage on the trunk. He gave me an estimate and left it so that I would contact him one way or another. I was impressed with his professionalism and knowledge, and the fact that he was willing to be paid less to save the tree then to go ahead and take the bigger job of removing it. I was also impressed to see that he is diamond certified, licensed, bonded and insured. Some of the other companies that came out could not provide any proof of insurance. We decided to choose Tree pros based on that. They came exactly when they said they would, and did a beautiful job of aesthetically pruning the tree. They thinned it out, removed all the dead branches, and large limbs that were hanging over our house and the powerlines all the while keeping the tree in a beautiful shape. I can hardly wait to see what it's going to look like in the spring. All the debris was removed, they raked the grass and cleaned up any excess sawdust. They left the yard in as good or better shape than when they arrived. I was also given the added bonus of having Jon tell me how to prune my fig tree! I highly recommend Jon and his crew for all of your tree needs. read more

I'm very happy with the work that was done at my home in Novato today. I've been putting off decisions about knocking back trees, pruning, removing, etc.... Called Tree Pros after receiving that blue envelope with coupons for local services and after meeting with John last Friday. He seems very knowledgeable about the trees and what makes sense to work on now and what shouldn't be worked on at this time, seasonally. Here is it Monday, and the work is just being completed. I'm so happy with the results. They got it all accomplished, left me with firewood, too. I have so much more light in my backyard. John wrote a detailed list of what we agreed to and arrived on time.... his workers were very responsible and hard working. I'm very happy with the work that was done, how it was done and it seemed like a fair price. read more

Did a wonderful job. Jon is very professional. And the crew were amazing, clean, and efficient.

I have used Jon Black as my "go to" tree guy over the years. He is prompt, his crew extremely efficient, and his pricing is competitive. Jon and his brother Paul really know their business. He makes great recommendations to maintain the health of my trees while keeping costs down. Since I live in a newly designated FireWise community, John knew exactly what to do to minimize fire risk to our home in this heavily wooded neighborhood. Marin Tree Pros, you rock! read more

VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER HERE! We had Live Oak overtaking our hill in back of house and blocking our view. Our neighbor has been using Tree Pros for years so we called them and so happy we did. I showed John what we wanted and he gave us great advise as to how it should be done which showed us that he was very experienced. John and his crew showed up on time and went right to work. His crew was careful and polite. I watched them work and John has trained them well. They cut and trimmed those ugly Live Oaks into beautiful sculptured art. They weed wracked our hill, cleaned up brush and now it is once again a beautiful part of our property. We also had them do some work in front which we are glad we had them do it. Commutation is very important when you hire someone to work on your house and there was no problem here, everything was exactly as we wanted. read more

John Black of Tree Pros has taken care of our trees for years and we continue to be extremely happy with the work he has done for us. The Tree Pros crews complete their work in a very short time and always do a great job of cleaning up the areas they have worked on. We live in a heavily wooded area and in order to maintain our view and to give our home light, we have had to have many of our older trees trimmed, cut-back, windowed, and shaped. John is always professional and knowledgable about all of the trees we have on our property. When it comes to our view, he sees the possibilities that we aren't able to see. John always listens to what we say and even more importantly, he is willing to work around what our adjoining neighbors value about their views and landscaping -- especially important in Marin County! After interviewing 3 tree trimming services we went with Tree Pros and they have done an excellent job trimming everything from a huge branch off our Monterey Cypress to a long 18 foot high hedge and other trees of varying sizes. Didn't use this company and never will. Very rude! Truck idling in front of my house for 30 minutes went and asked if he could either move or turn engine off driver just gave me rude look like I was bothering him. If that's their reaction to a simple request beware! read more

Tree Pros does an adequate job but in 2004, Paul, our estimator, whom I assumed was an arborist, did not correctly identify two common trees that I knew the names of! That made me wary in the beginning. I did not call them back in following years because I felt they did not listen to exactly what I had wanted and overpruned some of our trees. If you just want a lot of stuff lopped off, the growth will come back so it's not like they will ruin anything, but, I found that another company in San Rafael did a much more specific and careful job. read more

Wow! I don't understand the negative reviews. We had an enormous Pine tree removed from our yard that was getting to close to our bedroom. With 7 men and the boss watching every move, the tree was removed in less then 4 hours. When we returned home, the yard was so clean, you wouldn't believe anyone had done all of that work! 28 years experience, fully insured, licensed, and certified, I couldn't be happier. Their estimate was much more reasonable then others. read more

We moved to our new home in Mill Valley and we had to take care of the yard that was not in a good shape. We needed to remove many trees. We did a market research and we selected/met with 4 companies. Our first meeting with tree Pros was with Paul Black who took more than an hour to explain/teach us many things (that we did not obviously knew) about what we had/needed-to-do in the yard. Paul is extremely professional and very human. We then had a meeting with his brother John who also took the time and provided us with many useful information and great advise. We selected Tree Pros and we are beyond Happy with the work they did ! it is just FANTASTIC and perfect. We highly recommend Tree Pros. Our Yard is now beautiful and we also have a fantastic view. I had a large tree (~75 feet) and some other trees and large bushes that needed removing due to the recent storms. I called John and Tree Pros and he not only came over the next morning, but they were able to start the job and finish all that same day! Every other place I called required an appointment which were days/weeks out then start dates far after that. John's crew was amazing, they were courteous, fast, and cleaned up everything so well, they even protected my lawn with tarps so the sawdust wouldn't get all over. They were also very competitively priced and did a great job of being transparent as to what all the costs would be, and did several things to help keep the cost down. I couldn't be happier and will for sure use them next time! read more
