My mistake for not checking in advance -- ownership has changed and with it, from my experience, the professionalism, quality and services. I will NOT return or recommend. Returned outside of health plan as selection and service (frame choices, purchase, exam, lab filling challenging RX, and fitting) about 10 years ago was excellent. Extremely disappointed -- staff does not appear qualified or experienced. Incompetent fitting and staff, including "manager" and receptionist need basic customer service training. Go elsewhere! read more

We are even more impressed than before, which is saying a lot! My husband was seen at UCSF ophthalmology because he'd had some vision problems that could have been stroke-related and the UCSF ER group was thorough and diligent. UCSF gave him a new Rx for his distance glasses. We took it to Marin Optometry to have new glasses made. When he tried them, they were worse than no glasses or his reading glasses. They checked the UCSF prescription and his previous one. Then checked UCSF's notes. UCSF said he needed a stronger Rx, but the Rx was weaker. Marin Optometry offered to have my husband's eyes tested by Dr. Jean, a proper Rx determined, and new lenses made, all at no charge to him! They really went out of their way to correct someone else's error. We are SO grateful. read more

Very disappointed by the vision test done. It took just a few minutes. My glasses came back completely off. Had another test done somewhere else. a Much more thorough test. The numbers were very different! I would not recommend that place to anyone! read more

There appears to be a mistake in my prescription. With my new glasses I can see better with one eye than the other. During the exam itself I was not told what was happening or what would happen next. This was my 2nd eye exam in my life and the 1st in 7 years - I would have appreciated some patience, guidance and information about what was happening and what my options were. My prescription was hand written - please go digital - it gives customers an assurance that you can keep decent records and easily share them with other providers. read more

Transferred from another office because my requests were not being met. So happy I did because the staff at Marin Optometry went above and beyond to make things right! Ordered new contacts and they were quick to pull from my secondary ins, then they informed me that I had a $200 credit that could used towards my new order. The old office never found or mentioned this credit. They requested my records be sent, they wanted me to get strength of contact that I was unable to get from my last Dr. they really want me to be happy with my order! I am completely out of my prescription, so they set me up with a weeks worth of sample contacts -how cool is that!! Super friendly and helpful staff in a relaxed no pressure environment! I highly recommend Marin Optometry. read more

I purchased three pairs of glasses for me and my daughter here, totaling about $1500. Got my glasses and did not like the fit or the way they looked all it -- they looked very different in the store. I requested a way to get replacement glasses. My request was outright refused and the receptionist rudely said to me "we didn't force you to buy them". Unbelievable. That's not the way to make a lifetime customer, but see... most employees don't understand how bad customer service affects the owner of the business' credibility and reputation. If you are looking for a satisfaction guarantee, go to Warby. I was trying to support small, local businesses... Boy, what a tremendous waste of money. read more

Great experience! I wanted to let everyone know that I believe you will have a great experience too. Get your eyes examined!

The only Yelp reviews I've ever written were positive. Not so in this case. The staff is shockingly rude and unhelpful. And that's coming from a New Yorker! Worse, I received an estimate of 1-week to have frames delivered to the store in a different color. They called after three months to tell me the glasses had arrived, without an explanation or apology! I'm a business owner and would certainly have no business whatsoever if I had their attitude. I don't think the owner should be in retail. If so, she should certainly read the negative reviews and adjust accordingly! read more

I had a great experience with an exam that was insightful followed by a nice selection of glasses and sun glasses. I needed my glasses in a rush and k was impressed with their timely turnaround. read more

I have insurance through VSP, and founded this location to be a participant. I recently had a TERRIBLE experience with a different optometry company that is- Larkspur Landing Optometry. The technician took my glasses and adjusted it using pliers. I had received a new replacement pair and carefully* researched a NEW- safe, place to go, and decided to drive here- Marin Optometry. I explained to Katherine- the technician adjuster, about my experience with Larkspur Landing optometry and I told her, "I trust you." I then put them on to show how they needed to be adjusted and she quickly went to take care of it. Minutes (2) went by and she returned - I tried it on, and out of neediness I almost wanted her to readjust them for no reason at all. Katherine was perfect. She was almost too good to be true, I felt relief and peace of mind my Gucci glasses fit my face, and were not damaged. I received my property free of damage and I got exactly what I asked for. Thank you Katherine. I recommend this business. read more

I was almost in tears by the time the owner finished snapping at me. As another reviewer said, it was clear she didn't want me in her shop, and I left as fast as I could. From the moment I walked in, she treated me as though I was a homeless person dressed in rags with flies circling my head. She seemed angry at me because my prescription didn't match the glasses I was wearing. She also seemed angry because the prescription was from October 2016 - though legally, prescriptions are good for two years. I explained that I was starting a new job and since it looked like it wasn't going to work out for her to make attractive new glasses for me, I asked if she could fix my broken glasses. "They're broken. They're broken. I can't help you," she said defensively. I drove all the way from the East Bay because a friend recommended this shop, wasting money on the bridge toll, parking and gas. As Scott L. said in his review, this woman is horrible. Beware the four-star reviews from people who have only written a few other reviews - that often means either she created a false identity and did it herself, or pressured friends to write positive reviews. ("Ron O." says: "Really writing this to counterbalance the negative reviews." OK.) read more

They have a great selection of frames! But be sure you ask about the lenses you purchase as mine were problematic. When my glasses became blurry I thought it was that my eyes had changed. I went for an eye exam at Kaiser and learned my prescription had slightly changed. But then someone looked at my glasses and said they were damaged. Unfortunately by the time I took them back to Marin Optometry they were past their two year warranty. I was told that the coating disintegrates when it goes from one extreme temperature to another--although I live in the Bay Area and don't think we experience extremes in temperature. I don't believe I was told about it and though I've worn glasses for years I've never had a problem with the coating. The few places I've gone looking for replacement glasses say it must have been a cheap coating, I'm posting this as a warming! Make sure they offer you a lens coating that doesn't get damaged in a normal range of temperatures. read more

My experience with this business gets worse and worse. Been waiting on pair of new lenses for over 2 months now and have been given a variety of excuses: 'we are a family run business and we are shot of help' then 'we are NOT a family run business but 'the lab' keeps getting the tint wrong' 'I've got a rock in my shoe' you get the picture. On my previous pair of lenses that seemingly went into limbo when they appeared they were barely tinted, not what I had asked for. But I accepted them because I didn't know when I would see them again. Though I would never recommend Marin Optometry to anyone and am still waiting on my last pair after spending $900 there. Here are some Business 101 Tips, more like grade school: 1) Don't make excuses customer doesn't want to know anything but at point of sale 2) Need to communicate between the 3 people on staff at the Mill Valley 3) Need to rerun all customer phone calls - by COB. I have not received a SINGLE call from Marin Optometry - ever. I have called them several times however, and stopped by their office a few times across town 4) Need to communicate between front sales staff and the lab (wherever it is) few times daily I would suggest or send photos or videos of exactly what the customer needs. read more

Be careful about hidden/un-mentioned fees when you go in, especially if you have VSP and are expecting a $10 copay. My visit began with the receptionist ignoring me, as she was apparently on the phone. She had no visible head set on and was not holding a receiver, so I was not able to tell.. She just stared at me and then went back to looking at other things without greeting me in any way. When I tried to get her attention, she snapped that she was "on hold" as though that was obvious despite it being totally not. It was a bad start, and I see from other reviews that she is pretty rude to other folks as well. I was told I had a $10 copay, and was up-sold a retina imaging for $39. I was only expecting to pay $10 and told the receptionist this, but ultimately, both she and the Dr. made it seem like a good idea, so I went and agreed to it. I had checked the "I wear contacts" box on the patient form, and so I was also fitted for contacts, which added 4-5 minutes on to the exam. After I tried on a pair, the doctor told me that it would be an extra $60 for the lens exam, which had *not* been mentioned at any point before the service was done. I was upset by this, as I had not budgeted for it and would have declined the exam had I realized it was at a $10-$15 per minute premium. As I was trying to take the contacts back out, I was having trouble with one of them, and the doctor told me "I can't let you leave with those" as though I was trying to steal the lens I had stuck in my eye. (and as though she would what, resell them..?) Ultimately, they (quite condescendingly) discounted the retina imaging fee, so the 10 minutes I was in the office only cost $70 instead of $119. What a bargain. I told them I would pay for the services received, I was just upset that I was not told about the total, especially when I had already mentioned that I was on a budget. Presumably they don't get anyone in there who would have to worry about $60, so it didn't occur to them to be upfront about their fees. I ended up just accepting the "charity" so I could get out of there, I was humiliated and extremely upset to be treated like that. It was nice of them to reduce the fee, but it would have been nicer still for them to be clear about their charges in the first place. I definitely did not appreciate the silent eye-rolling and snideness when I expressed dismay at the extra charges either. I am likely the only person left living in MV who isn't extremely well-off, so this review may not apply to you if you're rich. :) read more

I've been a client of Marin Optometry since 2002. As a result of a change in insurance, I cheated on Dr. Duhn and went to The Other Place. Here's what I discovered: 1. The optometry department of The Other Place cares only about turning over clients as quickly as possible, in order to maximize profits. As a result, the glasses I ended up with were a poor fit. I had to switch out the frames and insist this be done at no charge to me. 2. My contact lens fitting was performed by a person who I am sure hates her job. Talk about unpleasant! She seemed truly thrown by the fact that I don't wear disposable, gas permeable lenses. No, I require a bit more time with my fitting, as I wear rigid lenses that are NOT disposable. Again, this was a time issue, and she said so several times. I was a problem for her because I didn't fit neatly in to the 15 minute appointment window. 3. My insurance provides no real bargains on eyewear at The Other Place, and the frame selection is limited. I may have saved some money on the contact lens fitting, but the lenses themselves cost just a little less than I would have spent at Marin Optometry. Lesson learned. I'm heading back to Marin Optometry to straighten everything out. Dr. Duhn understands my eyes. I am confident I will get a masterful exam and fitting. Sharon Segal makes sure she has a wide selection of contemporary eyewear in stock, and she has no problem with special orders. I'm willing to spend a little more money at the shop where staff know me, understand my eye needs, and spend the time necessary to get it all right. The result is high quality, high value service - something I will never get at The Other Place. read more

I stopped in because one of the nose pads fell off my sunglasses and was lost. I thought it would be a long shot that they could help. I showed them the sunglasses and they had the part in stock and then affixed it for free! I was truly shocked that anyone would repair my glasses for free. Especially since I has never stepped foot in the store before. What great customer service and what a great asset to the area. Cute store, cute location, nice people. read more

I was sad to leave this practice after having several yucky experiences with the woman who helps with frames and fitting. I bought frames there and loved them, then, over the years the frames broke and needed repair several times. The first repair was covered with guarantee through the frame company, which was nice, but then they broke a couple other times. I'm not giving a 1 rating because the frames broke. I'm giving a low rating because of the way the owner dealt with me about the broken frames. After the first repair, every time I went in asking for another repair (which I was happy to pay for if need be) she seemed resentful or angry at me for asking for a repair. It was as if it was my fault and I didn't have the right to have a repair... She could have easily showed a bit of care and compassion saying something like "Oh, darn, they broke again... Hmm... Lets see what we can do.." but instead I got a defensive, blaming, and yucky experience. It's a shame... I even tried to give this feedback to her face, but she did not show any openness to hearing it. I feel sad for her, because there must be other things going on for her that are getting in the way of serving her clients with care and support. read more

Sharon Segal at Marin Optometry is a pro, listened well to what I needed, and had great taste in guiding me through a selection of frames (I can't see much without lenses, so I've relied on her help and opinion). I've really enjoyed my experience with her. read more

The Marin Optometry website is misleading. It indicates Dr Duhn is still the Optometrist there, but she sold the business awhile ago. Also, I just found out the best optician in the bay area, Sharon Segal, is no longer there either. So sad. I've been seeing Dr. Duhn for the last four years. She takes amazing care of my almost blind self, especially my contact lenses. This last year she told me my eyes were getting old. (Not me, just my eyes.) As I'm a dedicated contact wearer, she fit me into mono-vision, where one eye sees far and one eye sees near. While it took a bit to get used to, I love it now! She and the rest of the staff and Opticians are awesome and definitely worth the trip from the City. read more

Dr Duhn is everything you want in every doctor - professional, patient and personable. She remembers me, my particular needs and history. She listens! And she keeps trying until we find the best solution for me. I recommend her unconditionally. (And this is the only time I've rated anyone.) The rest of the staff meets the same standards - helpful, friendly, organized and on top of things. This is the only dr.'s office I actually enjoy going to. read more

I love this place! Everyone there is super friendly and helpful. Sharon, the optician, was so patient with me while I picked out my new glasses. There is no better selector in eyeglasses than Sharon. She has amazing taste and a fantastic eye. Friendly staff and knowledgeable optometrists. Location has street parking, but easy to find.

Oh my gosh, I didn't think there are still retailers this good anymore. I went in just to look and complain about how much my glasses hurt, and Sharon treated me like family. I had a superior experience at Marin Optometry! I came in because i ran out of my 1-year supply of contact lenses, and left feeling like i'd just made some new friends. This was my first visit to Marin Optometry, as i recently moved to the area from the east coast, and chose them for their relatively high Yelp rating. I find i agree with all of the prior good reviews, and saw zero hint of the experience from the negative reviews. Dr. Duhn works with the easy going demeanor of an accomplished conversationalist who very clearly knows her business. She understands the importance of getting to know her customers. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation, and appreciated her concern for my health. I highly recommend this place for your optometry needs! read more

I have been a happy customer of Marin Optometry for close to 30 years, starting when it was owned by Gerald Belanger (who is now deceased). When Channie Duhn took it over around 2000, I had a bit of trepidation, but it immediately disappeared on my first visit. Ms. Duhn is vivacious and charming, but also very thorough and up-to-date medically. I trust her completely. I have also found the office staff to always be professional and totally competent. Other reviewers have mentioned the high prices at Marin Optometry. My wife uses a different optometrist - Eliot Kaplan. I have seen both sets of bills over the years, and I have found them to be comparable. read more

I've been a looong time patient of Marin Optometry....back in the days when Mill Valley was Sweetwater, great Health Food store, original Banana Republic... before the Inn and many residents were youngsters with their parents. The quality of service was impeccible then as it is now. Where do you walk in that your name is acknowledged....asked about your family and the staff is consistant...many establishments hire employees unfamiliar with the clients or area...it's a job...with no regard to the community. Visitors are not aware of the magic of ''old' Mill Valley establishments and experience some business' over eager push because they don't come here on a regular basis except for occasional coffee, ice cream and window shopping..(which frequently are not there a few months later). I've watched multiple establishments that come in like gang busters and shortly fizzle out. Like a fine resturant (D'Angelo's)...Marin Optometry delivers this experience and have been there since 1937!!!! Duh! Unfortunately in this age...it's quick...check your iphone/pad while getting an exam or selecting proper eyewear....answering or talking to a very important person while ignoring the service person. Knowledge of my plan...sensitive to my finances and impeccible service is why I continue to come to this establishment. When Dr. Belanger retired, Dr. Duhn seamlessly took over and provided the same confidence and over the top concern/knowledge and friendly beautiful personality. Sharon (the Optician) has been there since I've been going (21 yrs). Picking a frame is one of the most grueling experiences unless you have someone who knows face shapes as well as asking you about yourself (WHAT????) I trust her when I have put on a frame (price never being the 'push') and saying " hmmm...try this (a lower price point but better for my face)". So...if the frame is more than your first car ...so is everything else... a previous commenter believe the name was 'grumpy' Karen from Belevedere!!!!!!!!..again.....Belevedere.......best stick with 2 for $99....check your Sunday Independant Journal and don't shop where a coffee or ice cream can cost a lunch somewhere else. Better have a good mechanic as well...I'd worry about that car. Thank you many times over Marin Optometry....Dr. Duhn, Sharon, Staff and Dr. Belanger for maintaining a Family establishment. Don't hesitate to experience this experience of great Eye Care.....leave your attitude on Hwy 101. P.S. I am only a satisified customer...not anyones Mother there. read more

I have been a patron of Marin Optometry for almost 20 years. I trust Sharon and her team to provide me with great lenses and frames that are reasonably priced, flattering and give the best possible correction for my vision, not always easy as one gets older. Marin Optometry has been delivering great prescriptions for my eyesight since old age set it back about five years ago. Dr. Channie Duhn is excellent at the eye test. I used to go here and the quality of the exams are great. However, I was disturbed that they were really reluctant to give me my prescription so that I could shop elsewhere if I wanted but instead pressured me to buy their glasses - which are quite expensive. It's actually a law that they are required to give you your scrip. So I have not been back and instead go to Dr Haack in Larkspur Landing, who does an equally good exam but willingly gives you the scrip. I still buy my glasses there when possible, but sometimes they don't have what I want so I can go elsewhere. read more

I've been a patient and customer at Marin Optometry for well over 10 years. I drive all the way from the peninsula up to Mill Valley just to see Dr. Duhn. I trust her so much that I followed her from her previous office when she started to practice in Mill Valley. She's up to date on technology and professional education. She also is generous with samples of new products. I used to have a problem with eye dryness, and she hooked me up with the latest contacts that solved my problem for good! I also like Sharon, her optician, who offers personalized attention and great knowledge of glasses. If my glasses get a little crooked from use, Sharon will bend them back into shape. I know I can depend on constant high level of service from this office. Plus, Dr. Duhn is very charming and makes appointments a pleasure! read more
