I seemed to have had a reverse of what most people experienced lol. I went in around noon on a Friday. I never caught the name of my ballcap-wearing waiter but service was prompt and he graciously kept my coffee cup filled. Food was about averaged out by being half excellent half mediocre, though it did arrive quickly. I ordered the 3 eggs, home fries, rye toast, and a side of bacon. The bacon, bizarrely, had almost no saltiness to it. The blandest bacon I've ever had. It, along with the home fries, had an overt and funky canola oil taste. I figure it's either low quality oil or they used way too much and practically deep-fried half of my breakfast. The home fries were seasoned and cooked well; very good aside from that prevailing canola taste poking through. There were a lot of charred bits of potato skin with them on the plate but it didn't bother me all that much. One slice of the rye toast might as well have been buttered bread; perhaps they forgot to throw it in with the others lol. The eggs, fortunately, were cooked perfectly and were delicious. It seems like quite a few negatives but for a quick breakfast at a reasonable price (I was in and out in only half an hour for 10 bucks including tip and the 2.55 for an extra side of bacon), I'm not too upset. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and return to try their eggs benedict. read more

Ancient grain pancakes with blueberries to die for. Bacon, corned beef hash and homemade biscuit yummy! Veggie omelet ok...veggies rolled up inside crepe like eggs; we prefer our eggs a little fluffy and for that reason alone, 4 star. Went here for brunch with two friends, the waitress told us they were "out" of mimosas but we could buy a bottle of champagne and a carafe of orange juice. I got a BLT which was good. Everyone else seemed to be satisfied with their food. Pregnant waitress was unpleasant but I chalked it up to not wanting to work because of the effects of pregnancy. Came back a few weeks later for lunch. They close at 2:30pm and I got there at 2:00, plenty of time for one person to eat. The door was locked and the same waitress told me "we're closed." I assume she closes early to avoid going home later than close. Must be nice! Probably won't go back just because I felt so unwelcome both times. read more

My husband and I live locally and wanted to find a casual place for breakfast and lunch. We tried several places, finding all of them a bit cold and unfriendly. We overheard someone talking about Maria's Cafe, so we decided to try it out. We made it a point to try breakfast there first, and from the moment we walked through the door, we knew this was going to be great. The service there is expedient and on top of things, and the food was nothing less then fantastic. It's not like going to a "5-Star Restaurant" but rather like going home to mom's house. The atmosphere is very casual, warm and friendly, even family like. The place is clean and the food is great. We've now been regular patrons for a year, enjoying a multitude of items on their menu, and we've never been disappointed. We are now one of the many Stuart residents who, when asked about this place, will respond: "We ate at Maria's ONCE." It's surprising that a restaurant so bad and with no / few repeat customers can hang around so long, but in the case of Maria's, it must just be that the location gets them enough unsuspecting weekend or street fair visitors (who will never come back) to make due. But walk by on a weekday and you'll see no one. The egg and cheese bkfst sandwich took 20 minutes and came out two pieces of crispy un-buttered bread with a dried up fried egg in the middle. Absolutely a terrible effort - truly the worst breakfast sandwich I've encountered, including at airports, middle school cafeterias and hospitals. Pancakes were the kind you'd expect in the hot tray at a Holiday Inn continental breakfast - obviously from mix, under-cooked and heavy. Didn't come with any butter, had to ask, got handed a fist-full of tiny Land-O-Lakes plastic butter receptacles. Not even the first one melted when put on the pancake, but I opened them all one by one of while the pancakes got cold in order to come up with an adequate supply of butter for a normal pancake experience. I was then forced to ignore the large pile of garbage now on my table. Coffee: It's a simple rule - if you call yourself a breakfast place, at the very least try to make an effort to have some decent coffee. This coffee was terrible - weak, not hot. More plastic disposable containers (this time the cream) adding to the giant pile of plastic garbage next to my plate. Overall ambiance was dark and dirty, not befitting of a breakfast or lunch cafe or a diner of any kind. Depressing. Dark / red brick and dark furniture, like a bar - It feels like this place used to be a pizza parlor / sports bar and whoever turned it into a "cafe" obviously made little effort to make the setting feel more like a place you'd want to have breakfast or lunch. I see there are happy reviews on here for this place. To the extent any of them are actually real, I respectfully disagree and am always amazed that standards these days can go so low. Stuart needs fewer crappy restaurants. Stuart doesn't need more pizza places, but this horrible restaurant should be turned back into one anyway. Or a bar (don't need more of those either but would sure be an upgrade from Maria's). I would highly doubt many people with any kind of reasonable eating-out standards would ever go to this place twice. As a person who would like to see this town improve, it's a shame that by virtue of its locations Maria's may continue to get enough ignorant traffic to keep its charade going. read more

The food used to be much better when they had their other Cafe' I have given this place 4 chances, and will not give another. The owner's daughter acts like we, as customers, are putting her out. She has ZERO personality, and is quite rude. She needs to be behind the scenes and not interacting with customers. 2 stars for food, 0 stars for service! Terrible! read more

Perhaps one of the worst breakfasts I've ever eaten! Eggs arrived runny when I asked for for well done. Home fries were just warmed potatoes from the grill. They had onions in the home fries that had not been been cooked properly. Toast was cold and butter was scarce. All in all not a very pleasant experience. Coffee was the watered down type that has been featured in mom and pop restaurants for years. Time to upgrade to something with taste. With all the other places to have breakfast I would advise not going to Maria's unless below average satisfies you. read more

Upon seating, we did not receive menu's. We realized that there were two inserted in between the condiments, but we needed 4. The waitress took a long time to come over to take our order. The food took forever to come out. We told another waitress how long we were waiting for our food and she explained "we have a lot of people here" well, that's what restaurants are supposed to have and you need to be prepared with enough staff to accommodate the customers! Do Not Eat Here!!!!!! We got our drinks fast but 30 mins later finally a waitress came and took our order and hour later our food comes out and my pancakes were raw in the middle! How does it take a hour to cook 2 orders of french toast bacon and 2 orders of pancakes that werent even cooked! I get if they were slammed but they were not. I stopped for lunch in Stuart without YELPing first. There are a TON of food places in quaint downtown Stuart. I decided Maria's might have something yum and unique. Their menu board boasted a juevos rancheros breakfast special and a taco soup & grilled cheese lunch. At 12:45 I could go either way. The place was clean and spacious. The service was scarce for after lunch crowd and dead town. I went with breakfast on recommendation of the Latino waiter.. After a very, very, very long wait with no appetizers like chips & salsa, my meal came. I guess when you've had the best juevos rancheros elsewhere, it's not safe to order them in a new place. Maria's places a corn tortilla on the bottom, long since super soggy. I prefer flour and separated so you can load it the way you want. Then it's covered with two eggs with hard center yolks, melted cheese and maybe salsa (heated). I was looking for the taste of oozy eggs and cold fresh salsa with cilantro to balance the hot eggs. Zippo. Nada. I ate cuz I was hungry but there was nothing pleasant nor gourmet about this $7 meal. Square potatoes on the side that were "raved about" as they came with onions. It was a bagged dish that came dry and unoriginal. The waiter never returned with the bill so I went to the bar to pay. Won't need to go back. Found nothing ethnic nor delicious about this place :( I'm giving two stars only because it's based on one visit. It was a one-star meal. read more

I would never go back to this place. Not because the food wasn't good but because of the service. I ordered the Maria's sample breakfast which was supposed to come with one pancake, one piece of french toast, eggs, a sausage patty, bacon, home fries or grits and toast or a biscuit. It was around $10 but my husband got just pancakes and we were going to share mine. I ordered coffee and oj (oj was very good) coffee not so much which was weak at best. Then the waiter asks me if I want biscuit or toast. I said biscuit and he said we're out. So I said toast. He had a variety of toast to pick from and I placed my order. Then he asked grits or home fries. So I ordered home fries. Everyones food was brought out and he says to me that when they went to make my plate, they ran out of home fries and that he was sorry. He also forgot my toast and by the time he came back everyone was pretty much done so I wasn't going to ask for my toast to eat by itself. The thing was it wasn't even busy. For lunch, the food was just plain bad. My wife has a blackened grouper sandwich, I had the same on a salad. It tasted and had the texture of grouper boiled in old bay...BLECH! I love how Maria's opens a whole side of their restaurant to the sidewalk and it is in a great location. I had peach crepes with a side order of home fries and my friend ordered an omelet with cheese, asparagus and ham inside. The crepes were amazing, the home fries are soft and have a lot of flavor. I was surprised at how great it was. My friends omelet was amazing as well. I have found that some of the places in the little town are very pretentious, but this place has great food for a great price! read more

I made this yelp profile specifically to write this review about Maria's. Let me start by saying that I spent the majority of my teen years and early to mid 20's in the restaurant business either serving tables or hosting. I have the utmost respect for people who serve tables for a living and I am a habitual 25% tipper. I got up and left because I was treated SO rudely. If you want to go out, pay way to much for just OK standard american diner type food, and be treated like you are inconveniencing the staff then Maria's is the place for you. I have tried and tried to give this place a chance mostly because I like to support local business and Maria's is a Stuart local tradition. Several times I have noticed that the staff is... let's just say less than friendly. I have bushed it off thinking "everyone has bad days." But today was the last straw. read more

I love Maria's. It's not some fancy-pants place. Just good comfort food and breakfast till 11:45, which is awesome. Good prices. I saw the negative reviews for service- I've always had excellent service, but I've only come here during the week. Everyday they have a different homemade soup, which is always delicious. I can get a huge bowl for $3, so I don't feel guilty going out for lunch everyday. Can't beat that. Definitely a locals' spot. Extra bonus- they always have a stack of newspapers up front so you can catch up on the current events or do the Jumble while you wait for your vittles. I approve! read more

So the food here is really good. I've had breakfast here twice and it's been excellent food. Home fries are killer. The problem is the service. They are really great about getting you the food. But getting someone to actually take your order, check on you (which never happened), and actually pay your bill is tough. Hopefully you have lots of time to try and grab your waitress. They seem pleasant and all, but they just seem to get lost. It's almost like they have their regulars that they want to chat with and unless you are a regular, you just aren't that interesting. Had breakfast here this morning. Nice menu. Not at all crowded, but even with a near empty restaurant, the service was almost non-existent. Ordered the Greek omelette -- spinach, feta, & sausage -- which was outstanding. Very tasty home fries that contained onions that were almost burnt. Rye toast and pretty good coffee. I'd give 4 stars for the quality of the meal, 3 stars for quiet ambiance, and a 1/2 star for service. Someone needs to whip the service staff to remind them their job is not to have conversations with the bartender and other wait staff, but instead should be providing service to their customers. read more

Greay food, service sucked. When I walked in the waitress nearly ran me over then turned around as if I was an after thought and told to to sit anywhere. Then the lady behind the counter chewed the waitress out for telling me to pick a seat. It was really unprofessional and make me feel a little uncomfortable sitting at the counter. It took me a couple minutes to find the menus since nobody had sat me and pointed them out. My water was brought to me with the straw already in it and I could see a lady touching the straws where I would put my mouth with her bare hands. I'm a little bit of a germapbobe so that grossed me out. It took a little while for my food to come out but when it finally did, it was great. The poached eggs were a little undercooked but it didn't bother me, I like them cooked any way. I will probably eat here again, but I'll definitely be taking it to-go. read more
