I ordered a special of the day, the buffalo chicken sandwich and all they did was pour some buffalo sauce on one side of the chicken patty that was the same chicken as my kids chicken tenders. It was the worst buffalo chicken sandwich I've ever had. Gas station quality. The chili dog was awful too. Fries were bland. I was super excited to dine at this restaurant for lunch after passing it several times during my work assignment. We visited Maria's Cafe for lunch and our host was extremely polite and efficient. I wish he would've been our server too! I ordered fresh brewed iced tea and a turkey club sandwich with sweet potato waffle fries. The tea was decent; albeit, one has to sweeten their own iced tea. The portion of my meal was large and could've easily been two meals if I hadn't been ravenous. I prefer multigrain bread, but it wasn't an option so I chose wheat. I dislike mayonnaise and the sandwich was very dry without a condiment so I added honey mustard. I had to ask a couple of times because our waitress either forgot or disappeared or both... Luckily, I spotted the nice gentleman who seated us and he hooked me up. The honey mustard wasn't anything special. It tasted like the the Ken's honey mustard salad dressing. Nonetheless, the sandwich was good once I added it. The waffle fries were delicious! My coworkers had burgers and fries. The burgers were huge and the French fries looked equally if not more delicious than my sweet potato fries. There were no complaints from either party. I would dine here again if in the area and would come during breakfast hours. Btw, they're very strict on the breakfast schedule. Came for brunch and the owner approached us at the door and seated us. Our server got our drinks and I ordered a mimosa, which was absolutely fabulous. For brunch I got a tomato, avocado and mozzarella omelette with potatoes and toast, and my husband got an omelette as well. They have a FULL BAR and their specials are always posted. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was great. The walls are all open where the outside and inside dining meet. Maria's is dog friendly, which is awesome! My mimosas came with a mini champagne and oj so I could make it myself, which I loved. The waitress was so nice, and they also give water bowls to the customers with their dogs. The design of the restaurant is very eclectic and different, which I love! We will DEFINITELY be back!! (Pics posted) read more

Second time we tried this place but will not be back. First visit I wasn't allowed to have my Service Dog with me. He is trained to an open carrier and we were told he had to be on the floor not on the seat next to me in its carrier. Doing this he would not be able to respond to my hand signals. Tried this place a second time without my service dog. All I wanted was steak and grits for breakfast which is on the menu with 2 eggs and toast. I was told they couldn't do just the steak and grits. If they did it would cost as much as the entire breakfast. (This is from the manager) So we canceled my husband's order and we shared the breakfast. I was disappointed, by the food and service. I hate to wrute reviews like this, but this place needs help. I could have chalked upslow service, or unavailable menu items to personnel shortages, or product delays, but the problems here were not that. We had a few different types of drinks, between our group, and I will say that the server did a good job at refilling our coffee, albeit, we were right next to the coffee machines. Our other beverages went unattended, which typically servers would observe and ask if we would have liked any more, but they didn't, even when our table requested, the refilled beverages never arrived. To make matters worse, all of our plates had food items that came out, from the kitchen, with either cold or room temperature. When mentioned to the server, she took the cold grits to the kitchen, and immediately returned with hot ones. My colleague was impressed by the speed, mentioned he guessed they were microwaved, not replaced with fresh. The even worse frustration was with the cold soggy fries that accompanied my patty melt. When reported to the server, she apologized, and said more would come right out. Nearly half an hour later, when my whole party had finished our meals, still no replacement fries. While receiving the check, I inquired about what happened. The response was the worst part. The server had told us that since the kitchen was serving breakfast, it confused them on making the French fries. This was concerning either because she had forgotten to request new fries and was lying to cover her mistake, instead of just being honest, people make mistakes, or, truly, the kitchen personnel, whom had just used the fryer to make fries, were having issues doing what they had done a hour earlier. Spoke with a few others who said that it is their favorite go-to restaurant. Lots of locals. I ate outside under the umbrella watching the world go by. Service: we waited about 10 minutes to finally meet our server who walked up to one of us without looking at anyone else and said I'll take your order while holding her pad and pen. Really? How about welcome? Have you dined with us before? Any questions about the menus? We did ask about the potatoes that come with everything. We were told there were "some onions, but you could pick them out." Food: barely warm. Terrible. Oh and the potatoes are FULL of onions.. Too many to pick out and even if you did the potatoes don't taste like anything but onions. Our friend was visiting and wanted to get brunch. What a disaster and disappointment this experience was. We sat outside, what a lopsided and uneven floor. My chair was on two different types of flooring. One part was wood planks and the other brick. Every time the server stepped on the planks it dipped even more, making my chair wobble more. I was surprised at how good this place was and how inexpensive. Staff was great and work together as a team- very family feeling there. Got an omelet and it was a generous size and thin, so that the ingredients shone through. I customized it-asparagus kielbasa cheese and scallion. Very fresh. They have some great daily specials - I was very tempted to get the fresh peach Crepes or pancakes but the home fries were so good I never co.pleted that thought. They also had a benedict with fried green tomato instead of the English muffin .my friend ordered that and it was also very good. The collards and black eyed peas are not cooked with ham hock or any kind of meat but flavor was so good it didn't matter. . Bonus: if you go on a Sunday the local farmer and craft market is just steps away. Good mix of vendors there, including grass fed meat, pasture raised eggs, French cheeses, bakers, etc. Full bar avail. Bloody Marys a must. Sadly no room for dessert. This was only my second trek to Stuart and my friend lives right around the corner from here. It's located in what she termed "downtown Stuart." It's surrounded by lots of great little shops that are the backdrop in this waterfront community. Background info about this place: From what my friend told me, Maria's Cafe was originally in a different location but closed for several years. They reopened in their current location and still have some of the original wait staff when they were originally in business. Maria's Cafe is an open and airy type of cafe, where you can just walk right in and pick a spot to people watch. Think Miami beach style cafe, but just replace the scantily clad crowd with groups where the median age is 40+. We came here for breakfast and the menu was pretty standard for a cafe; omelets, pancakes, and various combination-type meals. I was honestly hoping they would have waffles, but they didn't. So instead I opted for the Maria omelet which had cheese, scallions, mushrooms, and ham. I do believe it gave the omelet I've had at Mo's Bagels in Aventura a run for its money. It was completely delicious in every way. Our meals also came with a side of toast, bagel or biscuits and gravy, plus a side of homefries. The homefries were ok, but I like mine burnt and crispy. This place is definitely a favorite among the locals, so if you happen to be in the area, it's worth stopping in for. read more

Every Sunday my wife and I take our 20 year old cat (now with terminal cancer) to eat breakfast in downtown Stuart. Our favorite restaurant did not have any available seating so we decided to try Maria's café- big mistake! While I was parking the car, the owner sat my wife and our cat Buddy who he clearly saw, as she was in her stroller. The waitress made a mention the cats aren't typically allowed in public in Stuart, even if restrained, but she took our order anyway. The food was good and a few of the young men at the restaurant came to our table and talked about Buddy and were very nice. Buddy accidentally fell out of the stroller, due to her weak limbs from the cancer, and I immediately picked her up and took her to my chair and held her in my arms for a few seconds while my wife arranged the stroller. A woman rushed up from behind me, failed to introduce herself as the manager or employee of the restaurant, and emphatically stated that the county ordinance prohibits cats and that they did us a favor by letting us sit in the first place. I told her that she was not correct and the law does not discriminate against cats or any other species. The law per Martin County, Chapter 9, Article 4, Sec 9.90.A, "It shall be presumed to be unlawful for the owner of any animal to permit his/or her animal to be off the owner's property unless the animal is under restraint or control of a competent person by means of a chain, leash, or other similar device, or is in a secure cage or other secure enclosure..." Per the county ordinance, all animals (including cats) are allowed in public places, if restrained. Buddy had a collar and leash and was in the stroller except for 20 seconds or so. The owner then called the Staurt police because I initially said we would not pay the bill for being discriminated against! We did pay the bill and the police left as my wife, Buddy and I did not break any laws; what a waste of law enforcement's time. Obviously, the owners of this restaurant are not as "pet friendly" as they purport. The situation would have been better handled by not sitting us in the first place or discussing their concerns in advance. As owners, they don't have to serve us (they can discriminate, if they choose to do so, although not morally right), but you can't expect someone to follow the rules of their restaurant if they don't tell you what they are; but in this case what the owners told us was completely wrong! In Martin County, pets can be in public places (including cats and any species of animals, if RESTRAINED, our cat was restrained. Thank you Maria's for ruining our Sunday outing, for upsetting Buddy and wasting the time of law enforcement. Please stop discriminating against cats or any other animals you don't like. read more

Wow, what a gross lunch. Decided to give this place a whirl with a co-worker today. Strike one was the awful bathroom deodorizer that bathed the entire establishment, mixed with a greasy aroma. Time to upgrade your hood/ventilation system when my hair and clothing reeks for hours afterward. Strike two was obviously the food. The unsweetened iced tea was from concentrate. My chicken caesar salad included a lonely piece of strangely seasoned thin sliced chicken cutlet, 2 huge chunks of tomato, and horrible croutons. The salad was drenched in at least half of the 5 gallon jug of Sam's club caesar dressing. Barely ate any of it. My friend ordered the stuffed avocado, which included the complimentary price tag sticker, bone dry shredded carrots, with a side of syrupy canned fruit. Strike three was the lackluster service. The place was empty at 1pm, I should've been tipped off to that. I can't wait to get home and shower this smell off of me. There are plenty of other good restaurants downtown, lesson learned. Upon entering lady behind bar very unprofessional does not greet you in a friendly manner at all, makes you not even want to continue and sit down. Staff is the same, except the waiter, he was or at least acted genuinely helpful and attentive. Food is delicious, home fries are sooo good, pancakes are soo perfect didn't even use syrup. But if I was rating Maria's on lunch I would give it negative stars. I got one of the lunch specials: the chicken salad in avocado. The avocado seemed over-ripe and the savory quality of the chicken salad just did. not. go. with the sweet avocado. And I LOVE avocados and believe you could eat them with anything so for me to say this is quite a rarity. The strange chik salad/avocado combo was served over a strange salad and with crackers on the side. The salad had sliced pickled beets (?) and pre-packaged fruit salad. Not fresh. Not delicious. I was just out exercising with my dog and suddenly got hungry. I sat down at Mulligans first and after ten minutes of not even getting a menu I left and came here. I'm glad I did! I was acknowledged the second I sat down and the busboy, Jesus even brought my dog a bowl of ice water. Rebecca was my waitress and took my order as soon as I put the menu down. Probably the fastest service I've ever experienced at a restaurant. I ordered the chicken Caesar salad and let me tell you, they definitely don't skimp on the chicken.
