Great experience at this little mom and pop bakery shop in Richardson! Someone said on their review it was like taking a step back in time when they walked in and I totally agree. When I first walked in I did not know exactly what I was in for and so I was caught a little off guard and I also did not realize they were ONLY Egg Custards and also Cash ONLY. That being said, the owner of this establishment was very kind and accommodating to me as I came to the realizations and for that it was a five star experience right off the bat...but it only got better from there! I explained to the owner that I typically do not carry cash and would have to go get me some and he insisted that I take a custard on him and I could just settle up with him when I came to buy more. It was so kind of him I was immediately touched, but also worried that what if I did not like the egg custard.... That was not a worry for me for long, it was love at first bite! I have had some great egg custards in my life, but this one was on a next-level! Needless to say, I will be becoming a regular at this place!

This is hands-down the best Hong Kong style egg tarts in the Dallas area! Don't be surprised if the owner hands you a pizza box either, it's a fun conversation starter for many. I discovered this place back in March 2020, right when COVID-19 hits, and have been supporting them since. Prices went up over the years, and it's encouraged that you order a dozen instead of buying individuals. It costs $30 for a dozen, or $5 each-- you do the math. Make sure to call ahead to place your order, and bring cash when you pick up. I did have some difficulties when ordering ahead sometimes due to the language barrier. The wife speaks Mandarin, but if you get the husband, then you can order in English on the phone. The egg tarts are big and filling, and the crust is super flaky with every bite. The store is your definition of a hole-in-the-wall, so don't be judgmental, or else you'll miss out on an amazing bakery. My boyfriend's brother said it's very good and can easily be compared with the ones he ate in San Francisco's Chinatown. I'm not sure if they sell anything else but egg tarts nowadays, but there are photos of customized cakes on the table if you want to ask. Highly recommended!!

One of my favorite desserts...the egg tart aka egg custard! I typically fulfill my cravings for those delicious egg tarts while eating dim sum or from a bakery that sells other items. I was so happy to find a place that made egg tarts in abundance!!! Moreover, they taste sooooo good...the best of the best. I stepped into the store anticipating a display of the egg tarts. Everything was in the kitchen, so you probably wouldn't know what they sell unless you did a little research or noticed their handwritten sign. Here are some tips to know beforehand: *Order ahead: I ordered a dozen egg custards on the fly. Little did I know we were supposed to call ahead of time. The owner was super nice to accommodate us. They make the egg custards fresh, and the goodies were still warm in the box. *Bring cash: Make sure to bring cash. They are not taking large $100 or $50 bills. Once our order was ready, the owner gave us a free raisin sponge bread. We were very appreciative of this nice gesture. I wish this place was closer to home. These custards would be a big hit for any holiday party! Go support this mom and pop shop.

Hot dozen egg tarts! Call ahead!

This hole in the wall did not disappoint. These egg tarts were on point with eggs tarts that I've hand in HK. The old couple that run the place has nothing to prove to Anyone, they know their egg tarts are amazing so get some Or don't. Be prepare cash ONLY, order a dozen of hot flaky crust egg tarts and be transported back to the good Old days. The older gentleman was very sweet and kind and showed me box of the beautiful eggs tarts before taping up the box. This is my new go to spot of egg tarts for sure!

Thank you to my good friends who took me here. All I can say is WOW! This is one of the best "dan tat" (hong kong style egg tart) spot in Dallas! This hole-in-the-wall spot is owned by an old Asian couple. It looks like they used to sell baked goods back in the day but now, they only seem to sell egg tarts. You will need to call and place an order 30 minutes in advance. If not, you will be waiting 30 minutes while they freshly bake it for you. Fresh out of a random pizza box, the egg tart custard is silky smooth and not too sweet. The crust is nicely flaky and buttery. It's so gooooood! I probably could eat one whole box myself...The couples are likely to retire soon so you better hurry up and eat as much as you can! TIPS: Call in to preorder the egg tarts and make sure to bring cash (they doesn't accept $50 bills and up) For more food recs, follow me @asiangirlbigbites

I think this place is owned by an old Asian couple. When you first walk into the bakery, you would have thought they were about to shut down the place because it's old and no pastries were on display... kind of a New York China Town run down shop vibe. But don't be fooled by the look! This place has some of the BEST Asian egg tarts I've tried. The owner is very friendly and adorable. I didn't know you have to call ahead if you want to order eggs tarts by the dozen. However, the owner was nice to still sell us a dozen egg tarts ever though we didn't preorder. You can come in and purchase individually but you'll want at least 2-3 for yourself because it's addicting! Don't be confused when he hands you the dozen egg tarts in a pizza box... it's part of the charm :) Tips: -Call in to preorder if you want dozen+ egg tarts -CASH ONLY* doesn't accept $50 bills +

This was my first experience at this place in Richardson (visiting from Philly). Here's what you need to know about Maria's bakery: 1. It is a total hole in the wall, and it appears to be a shell of what it once was, selling baked goods other than Dan tats. You will see nothing but Costco-sized boxes of Raisin Bran (they need their fiber?) and trays of some random bulk candy behind the glass cases. 2. You will need to place an order on the phone about 20-30 minutes in advance. If you don't, you'll be subjected to about 30 minutes of a lecture on life by Mr. Dragon Mak himself. You may actually want this lecture. The lecture would probably make more sense if you understood Cantonese. Bring cash. 3. These egg tarts will be some of the most exquisite ones you've ever tasted, even if you're from California or Hong Kong. They're fresh out of the oven in a pizza box, extremely flaky and buttery, and the custard is smooth and not too sweet. Wait about 5-10 minutes for the egg tarts to cool down for the best experience. You won't regret it. The Maks are a total gem, and they're nearing retirement, so please support them if you can!

I've always noticed Maria's Bakery but felt a bit intimidated to step inside because it often seemed closed. However, one day after getting my eyebrows threaded next door, I decided to give it a try. Walking in, I saw they were selling egg tarts for $5 each and opted for two. The man offered me 6 for $15, which I agreed to for the better value. To my surprise, he gave me 7 and mentioned how lucky I was since most orders needed to be placed ahead of time. The egg tarts were delicious and flaky, definitely the best I've had in DFW. I would highly recommend Maria's Bakery.

This egg tart place is LEGIT ya'll! A plus if you can speak Chinese. Order ahead of time. It is quite expensive but you won't get these anywhere else in town just as good. Traditional Hong Kong style egg tarts with a flaky crust and smooth custard. Sold by the dozen in a pizza box! I can't wait to go back next time I'm there. Just as good as the egg tarts in San Francisco's Chinatown. If you pick up towards the end of the day, they tend to throw in something extra. We got an extra egg tart for free!

This is one of the best egg tarts I have ever had. They are fresh and hot. I love the egg tarts are flaky and the center is not too sweet. It's also a good size to snack on. The owners are nice. This is a place that is better if you speak Cantonese so you can communicate with the owners better. If you want a box, you have to order ahead of time. My great aunt did say that if you place an order but don't show up before a certain time, they might close early thinking no one will show up. Keep in mind they are older and it's just husband and wife working.

CALL IN YOUR ORDER AN HOUR AHEAD OF TIME!! If you're interested in trying their famous eggtarts, please do yourself a favor and call in ahead of time because it will take about an hour for them to bake. Also, just go ahead and order a dozen while you're at it, to make it worth while. It came out piping hot in a pizza box. Yes, packaged in a pizza box but that does not lower the quality of the light and fluffy eggtarts. Oh, almost forgot. Bring cash because it is a cash only establishment.

I took one step into the bakery and thought I was going back in time.... I have always heard that Maria's bakery has the best egg tarts and although I do agree, I think it is slightly overhyped. If I am craving an egg tart I do not think I will go out of my way just to get these. BUT if I am in the area, I will definitely support them

My first five star review of 2021. The reviews are true- this place is a gem. With not much of a social life to begin with (pre and during COVID) I didn't have much reason to buy a dozen egg tart so I opted for one and It was a spur of the moment type walk in so I didn't expect to get anything having read the reviews about this place. Luckily they have some left and I devoured it right away. I think they got it from the oven or something because it was warm and the crust was falling off flaky. The egg custard is perfection! It was creamy and light and not too sweet and was not too dense and had a good jiggle to it- perfect!! And the crust was so flaky and light and the proportion was just spot on. He said he's been in business for 30 years here and I hope he can have another 30 years more. We are so lucky to have this master in our own backyard. His shop is not much from a decor but that's because he is mostly an order and take out kind of place. Although the parking is so spacious out front I think eating in your car right away sounds ideal too. The only gripe I have with Yelp is that fellow yelpers tend to review and try whatever picture of food is posted - hence lots of egg tart pictures and reviews. I saw them bring out some fresh cake too in the back when I was there and asked about the type of cakes they make and he said only one kind: mixed fruit with fresh whip cream. That's OG classic in my book - I have to find an occasion to buy a cake and post it next time. When you hear that they make one type - that means they know what they do best and they deliver on what they know best.

Most current price - $18.99/doz $3/ea. Cash only. We had to eat some before we took the pic! :-D

As of 5/22/2022, a dozen egg tarts costs $30 cash. Ouch. It didn't taste as good as I remember either.

And that salsa verde on top? So good. Both the chilaquiles and the blueberry Earl Grey scone were my favorites. The scone was especially nice and moist with a unique flavor combo. I also liked the churro cruffin, and the birria brisket croque madame was delish and satisfying. Two of us ordered the Sweet Potato Latte and one got the Turkish latte, all half sweet (we generally prefer less sweetness than most), and all three of us really liked ours. Service was also great -- even though it was packed, our server was attentive and friendly. Great spot if you want something a little different for brunch or a bakery stop. Definitely worth checking out.

The waiting area was really nice and spacious. We got to try the Love Potion Latte (limited time), the Croissant Monkey Bread ($4.75), and the Birria Brisket Croque Madame ($19). The Love Potion Latte was okay, it's made of chocolate mocha, espresso, milk, and dried strawberry chunks. The Croissant Monkey Bread was delicious. The dough pulled apart so well and the cinnamon sugar on top added a nice touch to it. They toasted your bread too so it was warm and moist. The Birria Brisket Croque Madame was the best! It is a huge portion and we cut it in halves already, but it filled us up! The sourdough was still crispy, well-toasted, and it absorbed the juices from the birria so well. We went for a light breakfast but came out so full and stuffed. The prices are a bit expensive but it was reasonable for the quality and portion size. They are sooo packed though with customers coming in and out at all time. I would definitely make reservations next time!
