Former Employee of a few years here. Presued other opportunities and glad I did. Let's keep it a short(ish) and simple list of what I've seen and dealt with over the years of working for them and putting up with their horse shit of management:
- Freshly squeezed juice? Sure thing. The company policy mandated that all juicing oranges we got (50 lb cases, pallets of I believe to be 150 - 200 50 LB cases. Memory is a bit hazy on this one) that they were to be soaked in a food grade desanitzating agent in the sinks and left to drain and dry in the salad prep bar to kill any bacteria on the rinds of the oranges. They are never soaked or sanitized. All of that delicious goodness on the orange rinds ends up in your delicious purchase of juice. You best believe when the cases got dumped into the juicing machine and some oranges fell out onto the floor, they added them back into the machine. Even if they rolled into a nice puddle of water with scraps of food or meat mixed in from the salad bar.
- The management is overworked and completely under appreciated. You have an idea on how you can make things better? They don't want to hear it. Got a suggestion to improve the working environment or a scheduling idea? Get fucked. Been there for 3 years without a raise? You'll get told "You're lucky to have a job, why do you need a raise?"
- You literally have to stay on top of the management like you're in the Mafia and they owe you money to get anywhere in this company. The phase of moving up in the company involves levels. Level G is a General employee, they bag groceries, push in carts, clean windows and bathrooms. Basically the grunt work starter shit. Level 1 is normally the same deal except you're normally in a department like Grocery, Produce, Dairy, Smoothie or even Meat Department. Level 2 is the same, but comes a slight pay increase if you're lucky. Level 3 - 4 is full time and they will level you up to this position at a minimal wage salary when the handbook said that position even with 0 - 3 years of experience should pay between 11.50 - 13.90 an hour. They give you the levels with no pay raise to give employees this feeling of power over others cause the seniority through the union goes based on levels not time there just to shut them up. I was essentially trying to be pushed out because I was hired at a much higher pay rate then what they were hiring at 2 years later after I was there which was minimal wage now and probably still is.
- Got injured and try to file a workmans compensation claim? Better get a lawyer cause they will try everything in their power even if there is solid video evidence and witnesses to not pay a single dime for anything. A girl broke her arm and everyone witnessed it and they didn't pay a single dime and all the medical bills fell on her.
- Their medical insurance is a joke at best, expensive, high deductible, shit coverage, no co-pays, full price on almost all medication.
- 90% of the fridges at this place either have broken seals around the doors or no seals around the doors or the doors are just broken and cause the coolers to not be in optimal temperature to store the products inside. I came in one morning and an entire pallet of dairy was still sitting out (8 - 10 hours later from when it was delivered) and was warm, they just slipped it in the cooler and didn't bother to take a loss on it and prevent people from possibly getting sick.
- Orientation is a complete joke. Everything they said is a lie. There's no chance to move up unless you're favored or stay on top of them as aforementioned. The union is an even bigger joke, you're paying dues to 883 and they could give two shits about anything you gotta say and if you're in an employer / employee dispute, they'll just side with the employer even if nothing was your fault and you were disciplined without justification.
- The hiring process is absolutely absurd and unnecessary for this type of work. You go through a primary interview over the phone which askes your basic information and they ask you why you want to work for Mariano's and this. A few days later if you passed the 1st phone interview you get to have the honor to show up in some shitty rented out office building floor with 30 other people 45 miles away from the location you're trying to get hired for. By the time I was called for my interview of 10 - 15 of essentially the same questions and literally having to tell my entire life to them and bow down to them like they were handing me a potential 150,000 dollar starting salary, I was there for almost 3 hours. I applied for the full time position and was told countless times "The position is available". 3rd interview is a phone interview asking some more stupid questions and either telling you are hired or not. I got to that and was told it was part time. Thought I was doing something good and they were different, fooled me that's for sure.
