I've been going to Maria Ferry for over a year and have nothing but praise for her work. She sometimes books out a ways in advance but she is 100% worth the wait! Nobody knows color like her. I went in Saturday just to have my roots bleached out and more color added in, but not only did she give me a full bleach treatment with Olaplex to safely lift out old color buildup, but she asked how I felt about trying multicolor panels and...WOW. As far as I"m concerned, the only stylist, cutter worth a DAMN in this ENTIRE TOWN is Marisa Hill at Maria Ferry. I've been elsewhere prior to meeting this adorable pixie doll of a girl, and trust me, there is NO COMPARISON. That this talented woman is doing hair in essentially a very small, cash only "Mom and Pop" establishment is nothing short of MIRACULOUS. She's talented enough to go and work for Sally Hershberger or Bumble and Bumble or Ted Gibson in NYC. Her skill set, really sets her apart from the rest here in B town. I've been going to her regularly now for color and cuts, and because I am a changeling kinda gal, I like to make changes frequently. Somehow, she KNOWS exactly what I mean. I don't have coiffured hair. My hair is a messy shag, bright red, and every time I come out of that salon, my hair is CAMERA READY FOR DAYS!! I got a special pillow so as not to RUIN HER WORK! And ladies, who have eyebrow dusting bangs? She's the ONLY ONE who knows how to handle that. So do not sit there any longer, GO, RUN NOW and make your appt! Her salon has only been open for a few weeks but my friends and I have been going to Maria for some time. WOW! So I had an appointment today and got my hair cut with Maria. She's awesome! I came in with kind of messy hair...trying to grow it and out and got a bad cut in between. I also have the kind of hair that tends to be flat on the top and gets very bushy at the bottom. And my bangs had sort of become non-existent. Clearly, low maintenance is my thing. Maria had great suggestions, my bangs are the best they've ever been cut, and she took a lot of bulk off my hair and cleaned up the back where I had some messy failed attempts at layering. My hair looks awesome now! Maria is sweet, is very clear with suggestions but not at all pushy, and she does great hair! I am so excited to find this place, and it's about a 10 min walk from my house, win! Just an FYI, they are cash only. read more

I have really struggled for about 10 years to find a stylist that not only can cut/style curly hair, but one that can dispense custom advice on how I can style it at home. I'm not super adept at styling my own hair, but Maria spent a lot of time teaching me and giving tips, e.g. how often I should wash, how to protect my hair color, what products might be good for me (they were great!). I was thrilled with the cut and she helped me pick out a very flattering hair color. My grey game is starting to get strong and I needed a bit of color correction. She chose a mixture of semi-permanent dyes which created a fair bit of dimension. She also uses Oplaex (sp?) which glossed and smoothed my hair for weeks. Maria also mentioned she is studying for a master class in coloring so she seems to be quite dedicated to her trade. Other things to note- These are observations, not complaints. Her book is pretty full so it's good to call 2-3 weeks in advance. Maria also serves as the receptionist so you might end up in her voicemail inbox. She does call back within a day. Weekday appointments are easier to book than night/weekend times. Can't wait to go back. read more

Couple things first: My hair is pretty basic. I hate barbershop "clipper" cuts - they're worth about $5, but barbershops somehow charge $15-20 for them around here (and don't even get me started on sitting in line for over an hour for 10min buzz cut). I'm an adult and think hair should be cut with scissors, but I also don't think a basic, shorter hair style cut should cost more than $30. For the past year I've tried no less than 6 different places; most came by way of Yelp suggestions. What I found was disappointment, one crazy person and nothing under $35. Until Maria Ferry. Maria did a great job on her first shot at my hair. Her prices are very reasonable ($25 for dudes) and the result exceeded my expectations. Her place is well kept and everything looks new, but it's not pretentious. The salon is cash only. I respect that because it's a very small business and the prices are not crazy, but it's something to keep in mind if you're like me - never have cash on hand. read more

I like this place, so don't get me wrong. And Maria is absolutely kind and sweet and I want to give this place 5 stars. But I was honestly hoping for a little more and a hair cut that would grow out a bit better than it has been. I came in and requested a sharp, long, collar bone grazing bob. I came out with a extremely layered rounded, cheek bone grazing bob. :( It was partly my fault as I had my legs crossed during the cutting and the hair came out a bit lopsided, but I do remember asking her to go easy on the layering and the thinning because I plan on growing my hair back out again. When something's this layered, it will tend to stick out in funny places as different lengths grow out which is rather annoying. Then again, for the price of the cut ($45 without tip) and the lovely tea and biscotti, I can't really complain. 3.5 stars read more

I've lived in the Cambridge/Somerville area for nearly three years now, and I may or may not have gone close to a year without getting my haircut because I just had no idea where to go. I stumbled upon Maria Ferry Salon on Yelp, and realized it was right around the corner from my apartment. I could not be happier. I've been here 3 times, and my cuts have always been amazing. The first time I went I actually asked for long bangs, which I haven't had since I was maybe 12 years old - and they came out amazing. The layers were awesome and the blow out was great and totally unexpected. The 2nd time I went I couldn't remember the name of the girl I had the first time (I tend to go really long between cuts) so I just asked for whoever was available soonest. I learned I had Marissa the first time and Maria the 2nd. Maria was just as good as Marissa. I just went back today and saw Marissa - honestly, because she was the one who had availability. I'm once again thrilled with the cut and so happy I love it since wedding season is right around the corner! I recommend this salon to anyone - especially if you're hesitant about changing from your regular stylist. Came to Maria Ferry for the first time after a recent move to the Boston area. The salon is always clean, never over crowded, and their prices are very reasonably - just don't forget they're cash only. Maria Ferry is conveniently located right in Teele Sq. so I walked in the first time I went and ended up with Emily. She did a great job trimming and shaping up my long hair, so I continued seeing her for all my cuts. Emily (as well as everyone else in the salon) is super friendly and helpful! She's great about listening to exactly what you want and making sure you're happy when you leave. A few days ago I went in for a color (my first time ever dying my hair) and a serious cut (10+ inches). I was super nervous, but Emily was great about explaining everything to me and helping me decide what would be best for my hair. She took 3 hours of her time consulting, balayage'ing (that's probably not a word), cutting, and styling my hair. I couldn't be any more pleased with the result! I followed Christine here from Salon Cu. I've never had a regular stylist before in my life. I used to get cheap haircuts in barbershops. In college, I even went to a barber's school in Manhattan once and paid $4 for a haircut. This was in 1999...in 1970, that would have been way too much money, but $4 was a joke. Faced with the prospect of losing my hair, I realized I need to treat it as best as I can in the remaining time I can spend with it. After I get my hair cut here, I get compliments for days. No joke. She's also a very nice person and very pleasant to talk to. Gentlemen, this is a great place to go for a haircut. She cuts your hair so it fits your head and face right. Another amazing haircut by Maria. The salon is comfortable and casual(you are offered a tea/coffee etc as soon as you walk in)ant very nice. I felt well listened to, and she did an amazing blow-out on my hair . Maria has been cutting my hair for a while , and seriously , she NEVER disappoints. I always recommend her to all of my friends. I had my first cut today at Maria Ferry, Christine's new home, and loved the whole experience. Pretty place; apple green walls, big contempo mirrors, freshly brewed coffee--even an oatmeal biscotti. She always takes me on time, the place is fun and welcoming and the price of the cut and color is a good value. But the reason I wish I could give this salon 6 stars is that my hair is the longest, healthiest and best looking it's ever been. I get compliments all of the time. Great place to go and get men's haircuts. I've been coming here for years to get my hair cut by Danielle, who is amazing. She can get me in and out if needed or have a relaxing cut and talk about whatever. Plus the haircuts are consistent. This review is for Danielle. One day about two years ago, new to the Boston area, I walked in to a salon in Ball square looking for a new haircut and a new hairstylist. Danielle happened to have an opening, and I am so glad that she did because she is an absolutely amazing stylist. I have been with her ever since! She has recently moved to Maria Ferry Salon in Teele Square, in Somerville right outside of Davis Square. The salon is super chic. I love the stylish mirrors in front of the chairs, and the cozy atmosphere. As for my haircut, I have been getting a wedge and highlights, and am more than happy with both! I trust danielle completely when trying new styles, and she knows what will and will not work with my hair--and she is always honest with me about her opinions. I like to mix things up, and love that I can say "I'm looking for something a little different this time" and she comes up with some good options. I often go with her suggestions, and am always pleased with the outcome. Honestly, the day after I got my haircut last time, I was stopped in Whole Foods and told how much the lady loved my hair, and she wanted to know my stylist. This is not a rare occurance, (it also happened yesterday) and I owe it to Danielle! Five stars! read more

This review is for Danielle. Danielle has been my hair stylist for over a year, ever since I moved to Somerville. I found this salon on Yelp, and am so happy I did. My hair has never been healthier, or prettier since Danielle got her hands on it. The coloring that I've had done is nothing short of amazing and I have never ever been disappointed. I've sat in her chair a few times wanting to "change it up", and she always seemed to know what I wanted without me even saying it! I have no knowledge about hair so I trust her with whatever she suggests. I've gotten numerous comments about my hair since starting to see her, and it just keeps getting better and better. I love the cut I've had, just getting an inch or so off here or there. It's easy, low maintenance and she gives an amazing blow out. I have gone to see her multiple times for just a blow out alone, and my hair stays gorgeous for three days afterward. Anytime I have a special event or first date, I call her before I even know what I'm wearing! But besides her skills, she is just so nice and easy to talk to. She always has an upbeat, happy personality that you feel once you sit in her chair. I highly recommend Danielle and I can't imagine going anywhere else! read more

Maria is wonderful. I have a very tight schedule, and the first time that I visited the salon the client before me was running late. When Maria finished working with her, there wasn't enough time to squeeze me in afterwards. Maria was very kind and understanding, and immediately volunteered to come in early a few days later so that she could see me 'first thing' and get my hair cut and me on my way. She did a wonderful job with the cut. I let her choose the style with a few guidelines (I never style my hair, so it has to look good as a wash and go, and I like a style that can go a few months between cuts) and she came up with something fabulous. She was fun and relaxing to be around, and when the gorgeous cut was done, she refused to take any payment because of the initial scheduling snafoo. Bottom line: a bit of an initial scheduling issue (which could happen to anyone!), but Maria responded with incredible grace and class, going out of her way to deliver a great cut just days later. I wish that everyone -myself included - handled these situations as well as she did. I am definitely a convert and will return to this salon as long as I live in Medford. read more

I commuted from California to have Maria cut my hair. That's no exaggeration. I found Maria seven years ago after a long search. My hair is very straight and fine, and the vast majority of hair stylist, even at high-end salons, can't do a cut the will still look good *after* I go home, wash it, and style it myself. Maria does a magical job. The hair falls exactly the way it should. I've gotten complements on the cut even when I'm lazy and just wash and go. When I moved across the country for a year, I tried out the most expensive salon in town, and the guy there completely butchered my hair. After that, I coordinated appointments with Maria to coincide with with work trips back to Boston. Yes, she really is that good. I found it hard to believe that such an amazing professional could be tucked away in Teele Square. I'd choose Maria over anyone on Newberry Street. read more

Bad haircuts happen, but I've only cried about one once before. This time, I bawled all the way home. I have short hair. I grew it out a little to try and regain a favorite old hairstyle, something that took 5 months. I even asked my LA hairstylist how he'd done this haircut. And I asked Marissa if she could help me with this haircut. She said sure thing, no problem. 45 minutes later, my hair is now ~1.5" in length and not anywhere remotely close to what I'd asked for. It's not even EVEN. And I can't do a damn thing about it for at least two months. I need more Kleenex. read more

Her cuts always look good and she makes good recommendations for what would work for my hair but isn't too pushy. I started coming to this salon because my stylist, Christine, moved to this location from Salon Cu. I usually don't like having to move around from salon to salon, but for Christine, it was worth it! The salon itself is located in Teele Square, which is a cute neighborhood in Somerville. I really like the decor of the interior, and the warm dark wood and green colors are relaxing. It is a small place, with one big open room serving as the main event. Christine always does a great job cutting my thick, curly hair, and whether I want it styled curly, or blown straight, it always looks fantastic when I leave. read more

Over the last 4 years Danielle has given me fabulous color (from bold red to brown to highlights with caramels), bangs/side bangs, and wonderful conversation over the years. I have long hair, so it's been fun to have her help me change it up. Danielle gives me honest feedback when I'm considering a new color or style and always takes her time and does a very professional job on my hair at very reasonable rates. I get compliments on my hair all the time. I've never felt rushed in the chair or pressured to buy anything in all my years seeing her. And she's just a darling and sweet person who I love getting to catch up with. I've been coming here since it first opened, as I followed Danielle from a previous salon. Over the years I've been coming I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Maria Ferry Salon. Sadly I am moving back to the West Coast soon, but wanted to make sure I gave a review before I left. When Danielle left on maternity for a few months I also had the pleasure of seeing Maria for my color/cuts who also did a very nice job. Maria is absolutely amazing. She spent over an hour cutting my medium to long, straight, very thick hair with such precision and detail and then blow drying it to give it incredible shine, movement, and shape. She is a pleasure to chat with but not overly talkative. She has a calming and positive energy. I can't say enough good things about my hair cut. It went from dry, limp, and totally misshapen (thanks to a woman at Floyd's who destroyed it about a year ago) to absolutely gorgeous.
