She listens to exactly what you're hoping for in the end result and checks in throughout the appointment to make sure she understands what you're looking for. The balayage is always gorgeous and complimented beautifully by her great cuts. She's the only person I trust with my hair and I always leave feeling happy and confident. Since starting to see her I've found that my hair feels a lot healthier and looks a lot more natural. She's also fun to talk to throughout the appointment. Beautiful salon and friendly stylists however my hair looks nothing like what I asked for. I went in for a balayage and came out with a full head of reddish blond hair. Super unhappy with it and now I have to spend another few hundred dollars at a different salon to get it color corrected. I mentioned to stylist Alia several times that I wanted to keep a lot of my natural dark hair throughout the balayage. However I came away with a small crown of dark hair with the rest fully blondish with no specific low or highlights for dimension. She seemed very attentive to what I wanted and asked to see the example photos many times, so I thought we were right on track. I am not sure what happened. read more

So I gave them a picture of what I wanted (first pic) and what my hair currently looked like this (second pic) and this is how it turned out (third pic). I wish it would have been lighter, a little closer to the picture but I know she said that's hard to do in just one session! I worked with Taylor, she was amazing! So kind and so patient I would def go back to her. I did the Groupon so the balayage was $95, and with toner and tip I paid about $170. Taylor is so talented! I've been trying to move toward cool/ashy tones with a different stylist (different salon) who wasn't able to accomplish that, but Taylor made a huge difference with my hair today. She was realistic in explaining that it will be a process to get to my ultimate goal, but she made great progress and my color is beautiful. Balayage, root smudge and a quick trim. Super bummed to be writing this review, but today I had my last experience at MargiDavid after going here for over 5 years. Today I was late for the first time - i'm always punctual for appointments. I called to let them know I would be running about 10 minutes late and the receptionist said no problem. I was 15 minutes late instead due to traffic and a fussy newborn baby before I left my house in West Seattle (yes, I drive from West Seattle to Eastlake to get my hair done!) and as I'm pulling into the parking lot the receptionist calls to tell me my stylist is triple booked and won't be able to take me after all. I said I was there and about to walk in and I was 15 minutes late and she corrected me saying "actually almost 20 minutes." Her attitude and tone were so ridiculously rude that on top of already being stressed I was late, now I was offended. When I pointed that I really didn't appreciate her attitude she said "I'm sorry you feel that way - I've been working overtime." Um - so because you're overworked, you have an excuse to be rude to me and make me feel like my business isn't worth it? What did I miss? I just had a newborn and was running late because I birthed a child a month ago and he had me running a little late today - on top of that, Seattle traffic. So to Natalie who triple booked herself and the overworked receptionist, I hope me not returning to you and going to Bocz Salon moving forward relieves you of your holiday stress. I will not spend another dime at this place. MargiDavid obviously does not appreciate the 1,000s of dollars I've dropped here over the years. Way too many talented stylists in Seattle to be treated like a number at a salon that charges top price for its services. I've been seeing Hung Ly for almost 8 years now. Hung is always attentive and very very realistic about the results of certain cuts and colors. He has been able to maintain my hair through its awkward puberty phases (thank god for keratin treatments and Brazilian blowouts) - with little maintenance on my end, kept it healthy enough to grow out super long, and recently - left his comfort zone to try out a new project on me. Hung usually does natural coloring, like balayages and highlights within 1-3 shades of your natural tone... but for years I've wanted to try out blonde. My hair is naturally jet black, and Hung was honest enough to tell me he wasn't comfortable with it, but was willing to try it out. I'm really glad he did - even though he hasn't done full hair transformations in a long time, he was still able to take my hair from black to blonde without frying my hair at all. The process was an interesting one, as my schedule is limited to weekends, so Hung did his best to squeeze me into a decent time frame to bleach my hair. It took two sessions for him to get my hair to a stable (and flattering) blonde, but I'm glad he allowed the toner to sit in my hair for hours both times as it kept the color under control between sessions. I didn't really need too much toner for the second session, but it still looked pretty regardless. You'll see what I mean if you go through the pictures - it starts as a purple that fades to blonde eventually (about 5-6 washes, it'll be purple-grey). [side note: damn it yelp for posting the pics out of order lol. Essentially my hair was black - purple - grey - blonde.] My hair is a stable shade of blonde now, but I am looking forward to another session to neutralize any stray warm tones and lighten my hair just a tiny bit more. I absolutely adore the way Hung blended the roots with the blonde, and I'm confident that he'll effortlessly transition almost platinum blonde from my black roots. As you can see in my photos, it's a complete transformation - from really long black hair, to short, blonde hair. I've had friends who have done the same, but they always point out how healthy my hair looks in comparison to theirs (even though they've gone to salons where the stylists specialize in transformations). I definitely recommend going to Hung for anything - and now I can endorse full hair transformations. I'm glad Hung balances his honest expert opinion with a willingness to step out of his comfort zone to make his customers happy - he is always willing to find something that'll work. And if I have any advice - trust his advice! He wanted to cut my hair short if I was going to go blonde, and I'm glad I obliged, since the cut and color are very flattering and complimentary. Thank you for having me as your guinea pig for this project, as I (and many other people I know) ended up loving the blonde hair on me. I'm pretty upset about my razor hair cut... it definitely wasn't what I expected. Don't get me wrong, the length and style results were fine, but my ends are just really unhealthy now. They're all split and uneven... which meant that my hair was not right for the razor cut. I really wanted to enjoy my experience here, after buying my Groupon, but I guess I got what I paid for. I even emailed asking for a free trim because I was unhappy with my haircut, but they just responded with a 20% discount off my next haircut. My 0 star rating (wish I could give NO stars..) is for the horrible customer service I encountered today. Yes, I'm referring to you Gabby and other front desk staff you decided to put me on speakerphone with mid-way through my call without telling me until I asked for your name and you threw hers in there! I initially came in a few weeks ago for a single process color (balayage to dark brown/black). The next day, I noticed my hair had patches that were not colored entirely. I called in and rescheduled for a touch up without issue and went in for the follow up appointment. All went well. Later while washing my hair, there was purple dye was coming out. So I washed my hair again thinking all the dye would surely come out. However, the next morning I woke up to purple stains on my sheets and on my towel (didn't look the night before). Out of desperation to save my expensive white sheets (I know never again...), I thought to call the salon to see if they had ideas/recommendations to remove the stain and maybe see if they'd offer something due to the fact that my hair was still bleeding dye. I called in and somehow got connected to Gabby. Gabby was flat out rude, not understanding at all, and unhelpful. Here's a few sentences of the conversation: Gabby: "that's weird... it's probably the shampoo you're using!" Me: "well, I use Oribe the same brand you use at your salon..." Gabby: "oh, that's normal to sometimes happen cause your hair may not take color.. I don't know" Is she bsing me? She could have just said sorry to hear that! Gabby: "what do you want me to do? Google how to clean your sheets?" Me: "I was hoping you could advise on how you clean your towels or if you have any recommendations at all..." Gabby: "Sorry, can't help you.. not sure what you want me to do." I want you to acknowledge that your customer just had a bad experience and if you haven't acknowledged even a little fault... maybe offer something up or for me to speak to a manager that can do something to make me feel somewhat better.. or wait, that you care at all?! She wasn't the slightest bit understanding or helpful. I don't know maybe even offer some sort of compensation (I.e., hair wash, haircut, discount).. or just be sympathetic cause if I wanted to have my hair have the dye stain my towels and sheets... I am so happy I stumbled upon this salon and met Josh! He did such a fantastic job! I just moved back from OC and was in desperate need of a new hairdresser. After this one visit, my decision is made. Not only does my hair look fab, but he was awesome to chat with. I booked a partial foil, but upon seeing my current color Josh recommended balayage. When I walked into the salon I was greeted by the front desk staff. They seemed genuinely happy and friendly--not forced friendliness, or the tired stereotypical stuffy and pretentious. I was also greeted by one of the stylist's sweet dog, Callie. Callie is definitely an asset to the salon, as she gives the salon such good energy. I have had mixed experiences getting my hair done in the past. On more than a couple of occasions my experiences were filled with trepidations and deep disappointments. The visits felt like all image and lacked in quality execution. Interactions at these salons did not feel relaxing or genuine, which is the experience I feel many consumers hope for these days. I was promptly taken back by my stylist, Josh Schlosser. I had a Groupon for a partial foil. Neither Josh nor the front desk treated my visit as anything less than a regular visit. From the start, Josh was very genuine and pleasant. He exuded confidence. In addition, he was very conscientious and decisive about every step in the process of doing my hair. This put me at ease as I was having my hair worked on. Josh is young, but he executes with the confidence and results of a more experienced stylist. Here are the fact, you decide yourself. 1- 2 years ago, I got the Groupon for getting a haircut from them in December, they only 1 availability during the week for Groupon purchases and the next possible day they can give me is in April during the week around 11 am. I called Groupon to get a reimbursement. 2- Last year, I wanted to get some partial highlight and I got a Groupon from them. They set an appointment a month forward with Mary. The day of the appointment, a Tuesday, they said Mary won't do the partials. But they have a new stylist Taylor whom started 2 weeks ago and they can set an appointment with her, which was also pushed 2 weeks ahead. Taylor did my hair but she was asking everyone around in every step of the way. My highlights were in patches. 3- Over a month ago, I made an appointment for partial highlights. They told me Taylor is available, and it is 145$ for partials. They also wanted to have a consultation to understand the ask a few weeks before the appointment. Taylor checked my chin length hair and said, we'll do it. She repriced to 185$ due to if they lighten my hair too much they can cover it and that is why there is another 40$ fee. They have a list of prices on their table, which says partial 75$. So, I asked if we can do less lightening so that the price is 145$. She said no. They put notes and we agreed on the appointment. Today, the day of the appointment, Saturday, Taylor send me a text massage cancelling the appointment because I asked questions about the price. Another thing, when we were making this appointment in January, they were saying Taylor had been there for years. I pointed out that I got partials from her at that salon less than a year ago and she was 2 weeks in at the salon. read more

I recently got my hair done by Hung and he's by far one of the best! He not only cares about what you hair goals are but what is also best for your hair. I've wanted to get blonde highlights for quite sometime but timing was never right for coloring cause I either had existing color or too much damage. He worked with me to test out pieces beforehand to see how the bleach would affect my hair. After everything worked out, I came back and I couldn't be happier with the result. The only reason this salon even gets a two star is because of Viola, the hairstylist who saved the day. I travelled 1.5 hours to get there (I had a living social deal). When I did, the girl (Bianca?) at the front kept trying to pull me up on their computer and said she couldn't find me in the system. She asked for my last name over 3 times and phone number as well to track it down, and still nothing. I was surprised because I had received a phone call from them the day before confirming my appointment, and I mentioned that to her, to see if they could trace who was working that day and perhaps ask her about it, and it turns out it was the same girl and she had no recollection of this call... By this time the owner(?) had come in and joined in to stare at the computer with Bianca. Her problem solving solution went like this: she flatly said oh you're not in the system (like it wasn't her problem), then tried to accommodate me by saying she can fit me in to the rest of the day, but gave a time that doesn't work for me. I told her that I planned my day around this appointment and I have to be somewhere so it doesn't work for me, and told her I have travelled 1.5 hours to get there. Even after this, she was pushy and insisted I come back next week (I was appalled at this. Did she just disregard that and ask a client, who travelled for that long, to reschedule? What??), kept pushing me to grab lunch somewhere come back or reschedule again, and didn't really bother to apologize. Finally, what seemed like an unnecessary amount of chaos, she decided to juggle around some things on their schedule to make sure I can get that cut. Once I was in and the owner left (hurried out for lunch), I met Viola and was treated really well. I got the haircut I want and she was really nice in explaining how to achieve a certain look, and overall is just really great. Why this place is getting high ratings? - because the hairstylists and the treatment you get once you cross over the reception/administrative area, is great. Why this place gets bad ratings? - their administration, lets be honest, just plain sucks. Their service before the haircut experience is horrible, for them the client does not come first, it's all about the "hassle they had to take to help you out while magically losing an appointment that was confirmed explicitly a day before which suddenly isn't their problem,' the owner was pushy and had no regard for my time as a client but rather pushed for everything to be around her clockwork which was distasteful to say the least. She was unprofessional and hasty, and the eventual conflict resolution that should have been there right from the start, came too late after trying many times to deflate the customer and to make them go away. Am I going to return? - no, I don't think so. LOVED my stylist, Viola - nice, fun, cool. She did a good job on my hair and I liked chatting with her. I really appreciated that she didn't pressure me into buying any product. SHe is the saving grace of this place. She is awesome. She earned them the two stars I gave them. However, the prices are just nuts for the type of salon it is. Plus, they remind you about tipping on a pre-Groupon amount (which seemed greedy to me), so I tipped my stylist $20 and paid with a Groupon. I thought that was fair. I also brought in a referral because my stylist was very friendly, but $36 (not counting tip) for a basic men's cut is outrageous. We used to go to a swanky place downtown and it was $10 less. The counter girls were nice, but vapid. Forgetting information I had just given them and running through their "tea or water?" routine. I need a new hairstylist. One who can give the illusion that I have beautiful hair. I was referred to Margi & David by a friend who has fantastic hair. Blond, short, thick trendy hair! I have dark, fine, over processed, over styled, long hair. I wanted to update my look, to look more modern & "pulled together". My rules were simple: No Bangs, No major layers since they make my fine ponytail feel like a piece of dental floss. Oh, and some face framing highlights so people on the bus will quit asking me if I'm a Wiccan. She swung the chair around when finished and what I saw could not be true. I HAD A MULLET!! Not only did I have thick bangs that represented the business in the front (eerily similar to the others working in the salon) but I also now had long & short layers galore -- this equals PARTY IN THE BACK!!! My hair felt so THIN!!! I tried to channel the president of the hair club for men but that didn't actually help. Then I thought SH*T! How long is this going to take me to grow out? Now I am no longer SEXY. I am cute. With Bangs. And layers. Plus bangs are a lot of freakin' work. At least that's what I remember from the 90's. I guess it was a good thing I used home dye so she couldn't highlight my hair. I might have ended up with big fat unnatural stripes in my mullet P.S. Maybe I am being too harsh? I had a flashback the other day to my experience with Margi David and went around huffing and puffing for a while like Opus when the news anchor called him an ambisexual walnut. A few years ago I went to make appointments for my mom, my sister, and me to have our hair done for my wedding. They said they have a partnership with a catering company, and that we could order lunch. That sounded like an outstanding idea, since I hadn't set aside time to eat that day, so I ordered three things off the menu. When we arrived for our appointment we found waiting for us three orders of *each* item. So 9 orders of food. For which they were charging us over $100. 9 orders. For three people. We flatly refused to pay that much, explaining very nicely that only an idiot could believe that three and nine were comperable orders of food, even if the portions were pretty small. They agreed eventually to only make us pay half, which was still more than twice what we'd have paid for our original, sane, logical order. So that was lame. And then there was my hair. I wanted what I thought was a pretty simple thing--I've got curly hair and I wanted it kind of piled on my head with a few curls coming down behind. The end result hurt like hell and looked just appalling. It was sort of a Bellatrix Lestrange look--a messy mess of messiness. I thought I might be able to salvage it when I got home, but in the end I just took it all out and wore it down, which, I think, ultimately looked better than it would have even if they'd done a really good job, but it was still another $150 or whatever down the drain. The only reason I give them a star at all was that they did do a lovely job with my mom and sister, who basically got hot rolls. And they gave me a very nice little gift bag with all kind of wedding-day goodies like tic tacs and nail polish to stop a run (not that I wore pantyhose, but it was sweet) and floss and other stuff like that. But oh my god. 9 orders and a bird's nest on my head. Unsalvageably bad service. read more

As always, Viola has done an AMAZING job on my hair. I am still yet to meet a stylist that can get my highlights perfect like she does. She listens to what you want and delivers. She also always gives me the best cuts. I ask a lot of questions about what I should do regarding a cut and her suggestions are always right on. Parking in Eastlake can be a pain but Margi David has a parking lot right outside their building so it's really nice to not have to look all over for parking. Also, reception is polite and helpful and always asks if you'd like a beverage upon your arrival. The products are also great, I took home some yummy smelling dry shampoo spray and it's nice that there is no sales pressure to buy products. read more

There was a time when I LOVED Margi & David. It was my first salon in Seattle, recommended to me by a friend whose opinion I trusted. The first few times were great and honestly, the stylist is probably still great. The thing that killed our relationship was the time when I went to reclaim my coat from them and it was missing. Not only was it missing, but they couldn't have cared less. A vain attempt to look in their laundry was made, but no apology was issued or ANYTHING. 3 1/2 stars due to the receptionist. I went with a Groupon and had to make an appointment by phone. I probably had to wait 15 minutes to be seen. I thought they forgot about me. It appeared the stylist was still working on someone else. At least I had free coffee and magazines. The receptionist could have checked in with me, but I guess not. When I got to see the stylist (I believe her name was Mary), she was really nice, friendly, and made me feel comfortable. I don't know about a "deep conditioning" as advertised, as I had conditioner in my hair for all of about 1 minute. She listened well to what I wanted and really took her time working on the cut, which was to have it shorter with layers. It turned out really good after she dried and styled it. I really liked the products she used, so the conditioner did work well. The hairspray she used smelled heavenly, and I hate hairspray. She didn't try to push the sale of the products too hard on me. They are shockingly expensive, but I have found a couple of them online for less than what they would cost at the salon. When I went to pay, they didn't charge me extra for anything, but the receptionist told me they wouldn't accept credit cards for a tip, so I had to buy something? So I basically had to buy a little handmade hairband for the price of a tip. Weird. I gave a decent tip knowing it would go to the stylist. I would go back to her if I could afford it.
