Everything went well last night for dinner. It was a friend's selection for our monthly girls dinner, and bonus it was La Grange Restaurant Week. The menu was phenomenal, the server had a great wine selection and the ambiance was so cozy and inviting with beautifully lit tables and a peach color rose bud on every table. Table service was also on point with the server keeping our wine glasses filled and the busboy making sure our flatware was replaced and fresh dishes were added. We each ordered from the RW menu, we got the pistachio crusted lamb, blackberry sage coulis duck breast and halibut and gulf shrimp in a coconut lime sauce. We enjoyed the restaurant, but not sure it would entice me to go again. The inside was very nice and our service was quite good. The bar had a very nice selection of cocktails and we got the pisco sours - which were mixed well. For starters - we got the grilled spanish octopus. Any place there is octopus, we order it. Marco's octopus was definitely a shining star. We thoroughly enjoyed it and despite not being eggplant fans, it was a great pairing. We also got the grilled romaine salad and Soubise soup (french onion) and while I loved the soup (especially on a cold day) - my husband thought the salad was just okay - nothing that would entice him to order it again. For entrees - I got the filet gorgonzola and he got one of the seafood specials - I think it was salmon. Both entrees were fine - and my filet reheated nicely the next day - but nothing outstanding. This was a very nice restaurant with an excellent vibe. Even though it is a simple storefront location, the ambiance and furnishings inside were top notch. Service and staff were spot on over the course of the evening. All the dishes, from appetizers to mains to desserts, were elegantly plated and served. For starters our table of three shared the Chicken Mousse Pate (5 star wonderful pate, and something you don't find everywhere) and the Ricotta Con Latte (their take on bruschetta, and another 5 star offering). For mains one in our party had the Cherry Chicken (a 4 star entrée that could have used a bit more seasoning), another had the Linguine Gaeta (5 star lush), and the last, who was eating lighter, had the House Salad (a 3 star offering that was a bit underwhelming and could have used more balsamic). For sweets we shared the Carrot Cake (4 star delightful) and the Cheesecake (5 star sinful). Libations were very nice ... especially the Klinker Brick 'Old Ghost' Zinfandel, even though overpriced. We had started the evening with cocktails, and they were routinely good; the only offkey was the extra $2.00 charged for having one of them neat ... a sort of cheap move for an otherwise classy place. We went here for the first time a couple weeks ago for our anniversary. What a wonderful gem in the downtown area. Wish the parking was better. Our food and service was excellent! We had leftovers, and took our dessert to go for later that night. Husband had the risotto, I had mahi-mahi and shrimp. Flavors in both dishes were great. We live an hour away. We got seated right away and my server was very attentive. The ginger carrot soup needed something - a little bland. The duck entree was covered in too much sauce. I recommend the lamb ribs - delicious. We went last week and I really wanted to like this place. The portion size for the duck was small. The halibut was good. Nothing special for the cost of the meal. Probably would have given a better overall revue, but our waiter, Zach, ruined the atmosphere. His attitude comes off as self-centered and disrespectful. Everytime I bring someone to Marco's they are amazed. The food is out of this world. No matter how busy the restaurant is Marco always makes time to come out to say hello to his guests in the Dining Room. He asks about the food and service. Thank You Thursday goes out to MARCO's KITCHEN!! I love everything about Marco's Kitchen - especially Marco and Nando!!! This adorable storefront bistro is easy to miss. There is no glaring neon - just simple letters on the awning. Classy. Walking in, I was engulfed in charm and coziness. Vintage tile, dark muted colors and eclectic artwork create a sweet little spot for a lovely dinner. Nando, our server came right over and greeted us with a genuine warmth. He was sweet, knowledgeable and offered terrific suggestions. He even brought over Marco the Owner and incredible Chef to say hello. Together they made us feel so welcome. The unique menu offers so much. Our appetizers were layered in flavor. My friends lobster came with asparagus and potatoes. I enjoyed my Mahi & shrimp. The sauce was a combination of coconut, lime and basil. Yum!! Our cocktails and desserts were just as tasty. My friend also tried an Italian wine that she loved. Went to Marco's on New Year's Eve. We had 10 people and granted that this is more of a date place, but they crammed us into a space for 8 max. They were under-staffed and the service was horrible. The bartender was waiting our table and it took them 20 minutes to get our first round of drinks but the poor service continued all night. Food was mediocre. I had a strip steak and it was overcooked and chewy/grissley. If you can't handle a group that size, then do us both a favor and decline the reservation. read more

Prices made no sense for the quality level of the food. A couple good items but tons of room for improvement. Service was mixed. Over 12 mins before got any water or menus took us staring them down. Never gave us bread so we asked for it later into our meal and idk why they are ashamed of it. Their bread was one of their best items. He did at the end however ask us if we were celebrating anything and gave us a free dessert for it which was very nice. Octopus was cooked well but bland/ simple. Beans that came with it were pretty good though, like mashed potatoes in a package. Sauce with the escargot perfect, vermouthy gravy. Cous cous in salad was cooked perfect as well. When it came to the main dishes though, they were very disappointing. I got the pistachio crusted lamb chops. The lamb lacked flavor and the pistachios were completely burnt. With that, the asparagus was the most plain i've ever eaten. A sad $46 spent. No salt, seasoning or anything. Potatoes were pretty good. My wife got the duck, which was pretty good but the brown butter pasta with it was very disappointing. Could not taste the brown butter at all and needed salt. Dessert redeemed some of the meal and blew us away. Out of this world passion fruit creme brulee. Super tasty. Also got the coffee pot de creme, which was dense and delicious. And i hate coffee. After reading the reviews, I came in with high expectations here and sat at the bar for a drink. I quickly decided to have dinner as well. It was my first time visiting. Ordered a spicy and Smokey hibiscus margarita to start and it was a great choice to begin the experience at Marco's. Just the right amount of Smokey flavor paired with spice and it was perfect. I asked if they had a bone in steak but they didn't have an option for me. However, the NY strip and filet mignon were ripe for my picking. I chose the filet and I was not disappointed. The filet came covered in a delicious dressing with fresh veggies and roasted potatoes. The plate was very well presented and delectable in taste profile. I'm not big in desert but I decided to try one and they actually offered me a trio of options to try out. I was highly pleased with them all. The attention to detail with fresh & tantalizing selections available here are second to none. Zach did an amazing job with his service, recommendations and he went above and beyond to make our dinner great. His recommendations were perfect and drinks/food were amazing. I've been wanting to try this small intimate restaurant for a very long time and finally went over the weekend. I surprisingly walked away with mixed feelings (damn). Since this place has all five star reviews, my expectations were high. Marco is the head chef along with his husband and mother-in-law in the kitchen. I love that it's a family affair! The restaurant has maybe a dozen tables, if that, and a small bar area. It's nicely decorated in art deco. For the size, I was surprised at the high volume from within the restaurant. It was hard to hear the others at our table. Our party of four sat at the front banquette table by the window. Every time the door opened, we got a blast of cold air. A plastic barrier for the winter would solve that. We loved our server, Zach. He was engaging and provided great service. We brought two bottles of wine and the corkage fee was $25/bottle. The four of us shared three appetizers. The appetizers were fabulous! The black truffle burrata bruschetta was flavorsome with the creamy burrata, salty capers, tomatoes and perfectly grilled bread. I love when I see char on grilled bread. The grilled Spanish octopus was one large tentacle cut into bite-size pieces served along with white beans with lemon & olive oil, garlic and parsley. The octopus was so tender. The final starter we shared was the spicy chorizo stuffed dates. These little bundles burst with flavor in your mouth. Wrapped in bacon, how could you not love them? Not too spicy. Our friends ordered the house salad which they thought was just mediocre and not worth the $12. I also was disappointed with my grilled romaine salad ($15), three leaves topped with bacon, feta, onions and cucumbers in a lemon vinaigrette. I thought the price did not reflect what was on the plate. It had flavor, but the wilted leaves were disappointing. I love grilled romaine salad and this is the first time it wasn't a head or half a head of romaine with a good char. My husband definitely had the winner in the soup & salad category with his Soubise soup. This French cognac & onion soup topped with gruyère and toasted garlic croutons was creamy decadence. Outstanding! Don't pass this up. Next the entrées. The guys ordered the pan seared duck breast with pappardelle. My husband said his was good, but my friend said his was overcooked. The ladies had the asparagus Boursin stuffed beef tenderloin tournedos. I asked mine to be cooked between rare/medium rare. It came out overcooked. Zach heard me say it was overcooked and immediately wanted to correct the entrée striving for perfection. When it was remade, it was absolutely delicious! I'm glad Zach took the dish back even with me protesting he didn't have to. That's a sign of a very good restaurant. We ended the meal sharing the vanilla bean cheesecake, which was creamy sweet deliciousness. Zach also made me a perfectly frothed cappuccino, which was served with a small biscotti. Nice touch! So I have a dilemma with this place. There were things that were creative deliciousness that I loved and then there were disappointments. My friends said that they won't be back. I believe in second chances and I'll be back...if not for a full meal, definitely sitting at the bar sharing appetizers with my husband because each one of those starters we ordered was full of flavor and so delish. My wife and I walked in at 6pm. A bus boy asked if we had a reservation which we said no, we were just going to sit at the bar. We saw 2 open seats at the bar and sat down. Five minutes later we were finally approached but this time by someone telling us that the stools we were sitting in were reserved for people coming in 15 minutes and that all the open tables in the dining room were reserved. We were the ones to apologize at that point and then left. How do you not offer us some option to keep our business and let us decide if we wanted to wait? So this restaurant doesn't allow for any walk-in accommodations? Instead you tell people to leave and think they might want to come back another time. I didn't even have to try the food to have a bad taste in my mouth. Work on your hospitality! read more

Marco's is a hidden gem. I was impressed from the minute I walked in. The ambiance is classy, sophisticated and upscale. The restaurant is small but it is definitely memorable. Food wise this place is a solid 5/5. Everything we ate was unique, fresh and flavorful. It is obvious that Marco takes pride in creating one of a kind of meals. The appetizers were phenomenal as were the entrees. I really enjoyed the Brazilian Lobster Tail. It was cooked to perfection and the white wine sauce paired really well. The Soubise soup was wholesome and extremely tasty. I could go on and on about the food but instead I'll just recommend that you go and try it yourself - you will not be disappointed. We were supposed to go to Bavette's for my 70th birthday, but my wife accidentally made the reservations at the one in Vegas! She quickly scrambled for another place and came up with Marco's kitchen. We were far from disappointed. From the amuse buche (sp) to the coffee that actually arrived with dessert, EVERYTHING was outstanding. We started with oysters (raw and with breadcrumbs) and escargot in puff pastry. Exquisite. I had the pork chop with apples, another had the duck ( so good he didn't share) and two others had steak. The meat for everyone was perfect but surprisingly, the simply prepared vegetables were the surprising second star, and not far behind. People seem to love this place, so I don't want to give it too bad of a review, but our experience wasn't great. We started with wine, an appetizer, and soup, which were all good. (The soup was great) But then it took a weirdly long time for our main course to come out. We got there at 6:05pm and didn't get our main course until about 7:20pm. We probably sat for about 20 minutes after we had finished our appetizers. Not too bad, but also not what I would have expected for a place like this. No one really checked in to tell us things were running behind or anything though, so maybe that's a normal wait? I think we got a "sorry for the wait" when it came out though, so maybe it was abnormal? My wife got the fish, which was good, but then she spent a good 5 minutes pulling bones out of her teeth. She had maybe 10-20 little bones on her plate when she was done. It was trout though, so maybe that's not unexpected? Not a super big deal though. I got the duck and it was lukewarm, bordering on cold, when it came out. The rest of the stuff on my plate was hot though, so I wonder if they plated the duck too early or something? Maybe the unexpectedly long wait for the main course had something to do with it? The duck still tasted good, but would have been a lot better if it were served hotter. Desert was pretty good. So, up until this point, the overall experience was kind of meh, which is unfortunate when you combine it with the fairly high prices. On our walk home we were wondering if we would ever go back there or not. Then REAL PROBLEM hit a couple of hours later when me and the toilet became very well acquainted due to food poisoning. I'm guessing the duck is what got me since it was the only thing my wife didn't have (well she had one small bite), and it was luke warm when it came out, and my body seemed very relieved when I vomited up a chunk of it. The atmosphere I'd describe as simplistic elegance. The white table clothes and small lamps on the tables coupled with the dark wood and dim lighting give it a very upscale and classy vibe. Our waiter was incredibly attentive, friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. A great server. They have a very nice cocktail selection, specialty and standards, along with a great selection of wines and beers. The menu was really creative. I'm not usually one for eclectic things but this menu got my attention. One thing I found really intriguing is every item has listed next to it the countries that inspired the dish. I found that rather exciting. Some of the pairings seemed rather unusual but after eating here I can assure you the Chef knows what he's doing. For starters we had the Pan seared cinnamon chipotle rubbed diver scallops wrapped in bacon with maple beurre blanc, and the gorgonzola stuffed brown turkey figs wrapped in prosciutto and drizzled with balsamic reduction and fresh berries. Both sound heavy but honestly they tasted rather light and were full of gentle flavors that worked surprisingly well together to create a delicious symphony of tastes and textures. For my meal I had the oven roasted Brazilian lobster tail cooked in garlic, lemon, and white wine. Served with lobster lemon beurre blanc, potatoes and asparagus. The meal was light and flavorful, all perfectly cooked. For dessert we had the Sacher torte which is dark chocolate flowerless torte with raspberry coulis and dark chocolate ganache served with fresh berries. It was rich decedent and delicious. We also tried the New York Style Pumpkin Cheesecake served with cinnamon dulce de leche fresh berries and whipped cream. It was creamy and delicious. A great way to end a great meal. If you need to host a private event, I highly recommend Marco's Kitchen. We hosted my daughter's bridal shower there a few weeks ago and it was fantastic! Everything from the food, staff, (Juliana was super attentive and kind), art-deco vibe, and Marco himself were all wonderful! Marco was very organized throughout providing a timeline for the event, he also gave a lot of excellent food options. The day of the event, there were beautiful flowers on every table, along with a customized menu with the meal selections. Everyone at the shower raved about the place and how awesome the food was. From the cabernet-laced whipped butter that accompanied the homemade pumpkin seed-crusted bread to the deliciously rich coffee that closed out our mind-blowing evening, there was not a detail that wasn't thoughtfully prepared. Every time I have something from Marco's Kitchen I can taste the love and passion he puts into everything he creates. Marco has catered many events for me and my family over the years and he always impresses my guests with his creations. Every time I give him a crazy request for a party idea, Marco always finds a way to pull it off for me. I can't wait to see what he can do at his new place in La Grange. Guess I'm the odd man out in reviews for Marcos. My friend and I have been dying to try this place and finally did. Menu looks amazing and reviews looked like it wouldn't disappoint. Only good thing we had was the bottle of wine. Ambiance is beautiful and they were able to take our reservations same day. When we got there, there was one server who was also the host, bartender, busser and food runner. I wanted a French martini but he didn't know what that was so, I explained, to only find out they didn't have pineapple juice. No biggie. My real issue was with the food. Ordered the bacon wrapped scallops, which were cooked well and bacon wasn't underdone like many places do. Just didn't think the maple glaze complemented it. Then had to ask for bread. Ordered the chicken liver patè and the skate wing. 2 items you don't see much but I love. The patè was bland and didn't possess any hint of sweetness i was wanting. Then the abomination...our skate wing. Took one bite and was hit with nothing but the strong smell of ammonia. That just ruined the rest of my dinner. Didnt even want to stay for dessert and after dinner drinks. We sent it back and asked for the check. We didn't feel comfortable ordering anything else. Server never apologized just kept saying this hasn't happened to him before. First time. If it was or not, the experience left a real bad taste in our mouths. We were still hungry so we went across the street for some maki rolls. I'm sure we will try Marcos again, just not in the foreseeable future. read more

What a gem in LaGrange! If you're looking for a special occasion date night this is your place. Everything from the wine, fig appetizer and pork tenderloin entree was to die for.
