Recently made a destination TAKEOUT trip to Dave's Italian Kitchen in Evanston at its third…read morelocation on Noyes Street. I'd not eaten there since the second location on Chicago Avenue or its premiere address on Davis Street and its sister restaurant "Three Doors Down" in the mid 70's! Yes...I've been acquainted with "Dave's" for a very very loooong time. Everything was ready when I arrived, service was friendly and prompt. Dave himself came out of the kitchen for a brief hello, but since it was Saturday night, they were rocking and rolling BUSY and the restaurant itself was PACKED! This neighborhood restaurant has a quaint cozy intimate atmosphere unlike the previous two...so be forewarned it is small. The 3 entrees I chose...eggplant parmigiana, chicken Marsala and fettuccine carbonara were very much the way I remember them from my youth...and at this writing, they are respectively favorited as listed above. The entrees were shard with my BFF in life and we arrived at the same conclusions. The eggplant was the most delicious and flavorful of all three...which is not to say the others weren't good at all. The eggplant was breaded, marina sauced and had lots of cheese. The chicken Marsala was a close second and we really liked the rich yet subtle wine flavor that Marsala imparted in the rotini noodles. The two chicken breast were moist and so glad each entree had a nice hunk of Italian bread to soak up an adequate amount of Marsala sauce...even though I wished there was MORE sauce LOL. Although third, the fettuccini carbonara was good also. I asked for extra onions, but I don't think they got in. We both agreed the carbonara just needed a touch more salt and pepper...or a saltier prosciutto/bacon...and just more of it. Nonetheless, I'm nit picking and overall everything was satisfyingly good considering the extremely reasonable prices and generous amount of food received. Just sorry I was away for sooooo long.

There's complimentary valet parking on this busy street, but know you can also self-park in the parking garage half a block west. Attentive service and felt we were well taken care of. The dining area was still a bit sparse at 5-6pm on a Friday night. Pre-dinner bread was crusty and paired well with the olive oil and Parmesan it was served with. I indulged in the lychee martini ($14), and it packed more of a punch than I was expecting. Party time. Mocktails go for around $7. Extensive cocktail, beer, and wine list. My favorite Italian dish lately is pasta frutti Di mare. Here, they use a linguine, but I prefer it with a fettuccine noodle, and I could have used a scoop more of linguine. The fruit of the sea was definitely plentiful! I got about 12 mussels, 3 clams, 5 calamari, and 3 jumbo shrimp. The red tomato sauce was flavorful; for me personally, I prefer this dish with a white wine/white sauce to keep it a little lighter. I did love how my entree was served piping hot and stayed piping hot the entire time I ate it! Husband enjoyed his salmon filet over mashed potatoes. The lobster bisque was flavorful, though the tomato chunks within it were a little unexpected. We skipped dessert here, but there is a variety of cake/tortes and gelato. Will return in the future! I'd give this one around 3.5 stars. Food was ~3.5, and the service was a strange mixture…read more I came in around 5 on a weekday with a reservation for 1 and was seated at the bar. It was pretty empty when I arrived, but the restaurant filled up when I left, so I'd recommend making a reservation. Just FYI, they only take reservations by phone. I ordered the scallop as a starter, seafood linguine for my main, and the date cake for dessert. The scallop was very good. It had a wonderfully soft texture, and the sauce was flavorful without overpowering the scallop. Generally just a very well balanced dish. The seafood linguine, though, was way too salty for my taste, and the pasta was overcooked. I understand that a lot of Italian restaurants in the U.S. serve pasta a little softer than traditional al dente, but this felt slightly overcooked even by that standard. The pasta became somewhat mushy once mixed with the sauce. On the positive side, they were quite generous with the seafood and other ingredients. The date cake was then too sweet for me. It also didn't taste particularly fresh. The texture made me wonder if it had been frozen and reheated before serving, because it was hard at first and a little crunchy around the edges. The caramel sauce was also very dense and sweet. If you're a date cake person, I'd recommend trying Ema's. In my opinion, they have one of the best date cakes in the Chicago area. Service was alright, but a little strange. The staff who kept refilling my water were very attentive, although I don't think they were actually my server (I hope they were getting some of the tips). The server who took my order disappeared for quite a while, so someone else eventually checked on me and took my dessert order, and then it was another person who brought me the check. Since I was seated at the bar, I also found the experience a little awkward. I didn't order any drinks, and neither the bartender nor my server really interacted with me beyond what was necessary. I hadn't chosen the bar seating myself, so it ended up feeling a little impersonal. There were some highlights, especially the scallop, but the pasta, dessert, and somewhat disconnected service made it more of a 3.5-star experience for me. Maybe I'll give it another shot with friends together and try some of their other dishes, if I happen to be nearby.
