This used to be our favorite Ethiopian spot until our most recent take out experience…read more We called to order two vegetarian combos at 5:30 and were told told to come in pick up at 5:45. When we get there at 5:45, we notice that the food is packed up in a medium (9"x13") sized aluminum pan with lid. In the past we'd gotten our meals in two styrofoam take out boxes with plenty of food so I was initially excited to see the new packaging because I believed the quantity would be the same or more. We get home 5 mins later and were sorely disappointed by our order. There were plenty of lentils but the orange ones were undercooked and lacked flavor. There were only about two bites of the collard greens/Gomen wat. And usually Mama África supplies more potatoes spears with their carrot and cabbage side, this time, we also only got two bites of the cabbage, no potatoes. Not to mention, the green beans were definitely canned and had no additional flavor to them. We asked for a side of chickpea soup/shiro wat and were disappointed to find that it too lacked flavor and was mostly oil. The worst part in addition to all the above was that the food was cold and the injera tasted stale and lacked its usual sourness. To add insult to injury, the meal was nearly 70 dollars in total for something that barely fed one person. This was the first time I ever wanted to ask for a refund for our food because we barely received one portion of the veggie combo, not the two we paid for. I hate to leave a one star review for a small business but the quality and quantity of food went down drastically.

This was (INDEED) a nice discovery…read more I gathered with friends at City Park Jazz tonight (July 23, 2023) and Taste of Soweto caught my attention so I gave it a shot. By the way, its name is an English syllabic abbreviation for South Western Townships which I didn't know until today. This south African cuisine is something new to my palette. I've had Ethiopian and Somali dishes in the past when it comes to African food but I didn't know what to expect from Soweto. What I got me was a curry/stew that is so thick and stout; I've never had a curry/stew this thick before so it shocked me in a very surprising way. When I got my food, I thought it didn't quite like the picture on the menu but once I took a bite of it, it simply didn't matter anymore. It's got a lot of spices in it but was mild to a point where it didn't burn my mouth so it's not spicy hot in any way. And the volume of it is simply astounding. When I picked it off the window of the truck, it was quite the weight. For $16, you'll definitely get the value you pay for. People inside the truck were pleasant so you'll have no issues with service either. A few minutes before my food was up, the guy came out and covered #3 on the menu. Got lucky to get the last one for the night. Must be the most popular item on the menu!!

If this is representative, it should be. While others were ordering, I checked out the menu board. While there was only a handful of options, choosing one was not easy. The curries in a bread bowl looked good, but basmati rice sounded better to host the saucy protein. Kalahari sausage sounds interesting, and they offer wings with either peri-peri or Kalahari sauce. A friendly greeting led to my ordering the beef Kota bowl. I sat down to wait--but not for long. Most food trucks seem to take longer than expected. These guys had my food ready and well-packaged in no time! The curry sauce offered a unique flavor more akin to that at Urban Burma than a Thai or Indian joint--excellent. Sizable chunks of tender beef screamed quality ingredients. This was addictive stuff and it disappeared in minutes. I say 4.5 stars for quality ingredients, and fast, friendly service, rounded up to five stars for uniqueness in this area.

We went on a Saturday at 2:30pm and had no problems. Food came out very quickly. FOOD: Super yummy! My BF and I had never had Sudanese food before. The description on the menu sounded good. We asked the chef/owner what he suggests and he directed us towards the ful. This is puréed beans with lots of dynamic spices. Since I'm such a wimp and can't handle at all, he made my ful at a 0 for spicy - but the flavor sure wasn't 0! My BF also got ful but asked for medium spicy level and it was great. - FUL: puréed beans with lots of spices. Comes with some chopped onions, peppers, tomatoes and feta cheese I think on top kind of as a garnish. BF got it without feta and really liked it. Scooped it up both loads of bread. The ful is very rich on its own. Eating it by scooping it with bread dilutes the flavor, as bread does. So I suggest going back and forth between eating with a spoon and eating with bread. - HALF AND HALF: half ful and half eggs. The egg were scrambled with some diced red onions that gave it a nice crunch. And there may have been a few tomatoes scrambled in. The mix-ins were not over powering at all. I think he said there are green chilis in the eggs, but I didn't notice any and it wasn't spicy. But it was spiced very well! DRINKS: we didn't order any, but I saw cans of sprite and Pepsi and they have an intense coffee/espresso machine. AMBIANCE: it's a bit sparse when it comes to the tables and decor, but they do have a high chair so it seems family friendly. PARKING: plenty in the parking lot right in front, but I didn't notice any handicapped parking. SERVICE: nice chef/owner. The place is been there since 2009 but he took over in 2018. We ordered to-go and it was ready pretty darn quick. ACCESSIBILITY: I didn't notice any handicapped parking, but there is so much parking in those strip mall. There are a few potholes in the parking lot though...No stairs to enter, but I don't recall seeing a ramp from the parking lot to the sidewalk in front of any businesses. BATHROOMS: I forgot to check. OVERALL: tasty, not too expensive, and looking forward to trying their coffee some time!
