Longanisa breakfast sandwich with hash brown.
    Deforio B.

Manong has some of the most delicious breakfast sandwiches. It was clean.. The wooden tables glistened in the morning the sun. The cashiers and barista were polite. I had the Longanise, which is a sweet and garlicky pork sausage, with egg, cheese, and a hash brown. With each bite, I could taste the smoothness of the cheese and the crispiness of the hash brown. There was also a homemade Filipino banana ketchup. It was sweet and sour at the same time. It paired well with the sandwich. I highly recommend it. 5/5 Til we eat again....

I was looking forward to trying Manong's food since they opened. I came here for brunch and ordered the Silog with tocino and the cashier said they did not have any rice (mind you its 1p and they close at 2p). So I had mine substituted with "home fries". Which was seasoned cubed potatoes. 10 minutes later, the customers after me ordered the same dish and got rice. (I did ask if they were out of rice for the entire day). Unfortunately, I was really looking forward to the rice and was told that they were completely out when they weren't. Disappointing. The longanisa is a sweet sausage, so for folks who may not like a sweet breakfast, it isn't for you. I got the Ube latte and it was tasting earthy. Maybe I got it with skim milk. I'm hoping to come back for dinner and I HOPE they have rice!!

We have been hoping to get over to Manong for sometime now. The stars finally aligned on a beautiful Sunday evening in early July. Manong is located on Fairmount and 19th streets. Street parking was pretty easy close by the restaurant. The space is open, casual with a lot of wood. There is a nice bar also. It is neither a large space nor a small space. I took photos of everything our party of four ordered. My wife is Filipino and was born in Manila. We were not expecting authentic Filipino food and knew going this would be modern Fil-Am fusion cuisine. Our guests had never experienced Filipino food so this was also a good starting point for them. This all being written, the food was excellent and I mean everything we ordered. My personal favorite was the chicken inasal- half chicken, soy, calamansi, lemongrass, annatto, butter, chinese broccoli. This was so juicy and flavorful. I almost licked the serving plate. Every dish was delicious including the salad. The cocktails were unique and their Ube ice cream was quite good also. Finally, our servers were fantastic and helpful throughout the entire dinner. We can't wait to go back to Manong!

Food was okay overall, but maybe we should've ordered more steak-like dishes at a restaurant that was apparently conceived as a "Filipino steak house." Maybe next time. The Beef Tagalog Skewers were great. The pandan leaf (or was it a green onion?) in the middle was a nice touch, adding an interesting balance of flavor and texture. I could've been fine with these and some Garlic Rice, which was also great. But the Chicken Sisig was watery and bland and not like a sisig at all. It was missing all of the crispy, chewy, funkiness characteristic of a good Sisig. I don't know, maybe this can't be achieved with chicken. The Pancit Udon was strange but interesting, but the portion seemed a little skimpy (to share with two people). We ended the meal with a Lava Cake that was a bit dry, but the ice cream accompaniment elevated the dish. Super-friendly service and the open, Outback-esque wood-paneled space made this a fun dining experience. That said, here are my ratings... Chicken Sisig: 2/5 Beef Stick Tagalog (Beef Skewers): 4/5 Pancit Udon: 3/3 Garlic Fried Rice: 4/4 Chocolate Lava Cake: 2/5

Newer spot right on Fairmount Ave is pretty lively and has an interesting menu worth a stop in. Bar is fun to sit at as well, cool staff, and they have some tasty drinks being mixed up. Shared dynamite lumpia and some skewers as a quick bite at the bar. Lumpia have some good flavor and great to share. Skewers were on the pricier side for each skewer, good seasoning though. Need to come back and try a few more menu items lunch or entrees. Thanks

3.8 Tried their new brunch menu, I ordered the longanisa sandwich and ube cinnamon bun. The sandwich was good, the eggs were fluffly and the sauce complimented the ingredients well. The filling to bun ratio was perfect. The ube cinnamon bun was good but did not taste like ube just a purple cinnamon bun. It was a pretty casual setting, just a tad loud. Not sure if I would try again

Food is mid for its price. Beef skewer seasoning is good. Chicken skewer seasoning is great, I can clearly taste calamansi and lemongrass, but it is a bit too dry. The pickle on the side is way too sour. Shroom is good though I don't like how there are a lot of burnt pieces stick to it. Pasta and fries are too salty. Burger is mediocre. Pandan ice cream has a strong pandan flavor. The bread is the same one they use for the burger. A lot of reviews say the portion is too small but we were pretty full.

Manong opened a couple of months ago and I wanted to let them settle before rushing to eat since I noticed they were still updating the menu. They just started their one hour happy hour a week or so ago so my friend and I decided to pop in for a small snack and drinks. The decorations I thought were super cute but they kept the same layout style as telas that was previously in this spot. We sat at the bar and ordered the coffee drink as well as the happy hour cocktail that was a pineapple daiquiri. The coffee drink was essentially an espresso martini but I enjoyed it because the coffee tasted delicious. The other drink however was a little too sweet for my liking. I ordered the potato salad and the beef skewer. The beef skewer was ok, I just wasn't a fan of the whole big piece of green onions inside the meat. It felt like too much green onions compared to the meat. The potato salad was good! I just wish there was more chicharron. Overall everything was good and I may have to come back for the actual dinner menu. Cody was our bartender and he was Also very nice and actually told us there should be coffee coming out during the daytime in the near future so I'll definitely be back for that.

I'll advocate for Filipino cuisine anytime, anywhere, and Manong has been a great addition to the Philly community that spotlights what I feel is an underrated food in the city. Manong advertises itself as the 'Filipino Outback,' and I think it fits that mantra well. There's the bar and table seating and loud atmosphere you'll find at the Auzzie-inspired restaurant, but it's mixed with a more intimate feel with neighboring tables close to you and fewer TVs broadcasting the next sports game. Bonus points for the arcade machine in the corner after entering for kids and anyone interested in classic games after their meal. My partner and I were seated immediately after arriving for our Saturday evening RSVP. It took a few minutes before our waitress came to take our order after the initial seating and water. Our food arrived promptly, but I did feel that the service could be improved a hair with more frequent refills and check-ins, especially since we noticed one staff member chatting frequently with a two-top a few tables down throughout our meal. I understand that it was peak weekend dinner traffic, but it did feel that service was a bit inconsistent on that front. I did appreciate having our plates cleared between courses, however. The Food Breakdown: Dynamite Lumpia (5/5) - Probably my favorite Filipino-based food, and it lived up to its flavor for Manong's version. Mozzarella in its makeup might sound like a turn-off at first, but it was very subtle and complemented the jalapeño flavor. The sweet chili sauce made for a great dip. Two come with each order. Beef Stick Tagalog (4.5/5) - The flank steak meat was juicy, and the scallion added good texture to each bite. I didn't feel it stood out compared to the other appetizers, as it was just an overall enjoyable starter. Bloom Shroom (3.5/5) - I honestly felt very conflicted reflecting on this one. The taste was great, and it deserves all its flowers for being an experimental take on the Outback classic. The enoki was breaded and seasoned well, and the sauce that accompanies the dish is delicious. I think it's a bit more challenging to eat after the first few pieces, since a Bloomin' Onion helps with being more piecewise. It's a great starter if you're in a larger party or likes more experimental foods, but I think sharing between two (and especially one) makes it a bit to handle. Lechon Liempo (4/5) - The pork belly was very tender, and the rich, fatty parts worked with the sauce brilliantly. My only reasoning against a 5-star rating on the dish was because we had a section of fried skin that was mostly inedible because it was extremely dense. I wish that the fat was cut slightly better, but luckily it was only a small portion of the overall dish. We also had garlic rice to complement the flavor as well (ordered separately). This spot is absolutely worth a visit, and I hope it becomes a staple in the Fairmount neighborhood for a long time like its sister restaurant in Tabachoy. Lots of praise for its experimental flavors and ideas, and even if it didn't fully resonate with my partner and I, they're still outstanding concepts and I would certainly revisit to try more of their menu. Also: I can't get over how they have a literal Outback sign in one of their bathrooms. Worth a trip just to see it and take a selfie.

First visit to Manong and definitely not our last. A really great and fun meal from start to finish. We started with cocktails -- the Lapu-Lapu with Beefeater gin, passionfruit, orgeat, and lemon was especially good, along with a Beefeater G&T and a Kasama rum old fashioned. Food-wise, we loved the ensaladang sariwa (napa cabbage, bangus green goddess, daikon, cashew), inihaw na hipon (grilled shrimp, chili oil, lime), dynamite lumpia (kind of like a lumpiang Shanghai with melty cheese), and their pork belly adobo (traditional and very tasty). The pork and beans dish with pork chop and munggo baked beans was probably the standout for me. Desserts were great too: Milo chocolate lava cake, mango float, and calamansi water ice. Great food, warm service, and just a really enjoyable atmosphere overall. Already looking forward to going back.

This is solely for their new addition of cafe hours. I got the iced pandan latte and ube cinnamon roll. Both were soooo good. The pandan is a syrup. I LOVE the Pandan flavor so it was perfect. The ube latte looked good maybe I'll try that next time. They're starting breakfast/brunch menu in April from what the person at the register was saying. Plenty of seating and they have WiFi so potentially a good spot to read or work but it does get a little loud

I came out to try Manong twice. The first time around was when they were still relatively new and it was definitely more crowded. During my first time, I tried the dynamite lumpia, chicken skewer, beef stick tagalog skewers, and lechon baka with a side of garlic rice (which truly felt like a boy dinner). The second time around, I ordered the dynamite lumpia (again), bloom shroom, lechon liempo, and manong's bistek with a side of garlic rice. I absolutely lovedddd everything the second time around. The bloom shroom was a bit hard to eat and was quite oily but worth it (especially the sauce). The steak was so delicious with the picked onions and fresnos, and the pork belly was so crispy and honestly...the pairing with the garlic rice was just perfect. I was so full by the end of the meal and didn't get to try the dessert, but I'll surely be back. The service felt a bit slower the second time around as the waiters switched after we were seated and it took a bit to get our orders in, but at the end of the day, I think the food really made up for it.

We asked for the toppings on the side because, you know, kids, but WOW. The vodka sauce was delicious, and the pickled tomato concoction that came with them? I could've bathed in it. The calamari was perfectly crisp and came with the unexpected bonus of onion rings, which were ever-so-lightly battered and perfectly crunchy. And once again, the sauces were superb. The boys shared a cheese pizza, half pepperoni, and really enjoyed it. My husband ordered the burger, and yes, I stole a bite--and yes, to no one's surprise, it was amazing. We also ordered the charred broccoli after seeing everyone rave about it online. They were NOT wrong. Creamy, smoky, charred perfection. And finally... drumroll please... the 10 oz. smoked Duroc pork chop! OH. EM. GEEE. Perfectly charred on the outside and incredibly juicy inside, sitting in the most delicious smoky morita-apricot glaze and topped with a bright cucumber-melon salad with mint and blue basil. The contrast was perfection! The rich, smoky pork, the sweet and slightly spicy glaze, and that cool, fresh salad on top. Every bite had the perfect combination of flavors and textures. Easily one of the best pork chops I've ever had. As wonderful as the food was, the service somehow made the experience even better. From the minute we arrived, we were treated like family coming home for the holidays. Warm, welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind. What an absolute joy of a restaurant. The lobster ravioli was 50/50 for me personally, while the lobster was cooked well and the sauce flavorful, the only lobster was what was topped on the ravioli and not actually stuffed in with the cheese like I was expecting. It was still good, just not as "lobster ravioli" as Im used to. The pizza is a very thin crust but they did a wonderful job of not burning the crust despite this. There was a lao a really nice distribution of pepperoni throughout the pizza and it never really gave that "greasy" feeling that can happen.

The Love is better. The space is beautiful, the service is consistently warm, and Stephen Starr's fingerprints are all over it. I love the painted white brick, the floral artwork along the walls, the street-level energy, and the outdoor seating. I also remember taking the elevator upstairs once. I can't remember whether we actually stayed and ate up there or asked to move back downstairs, but the space was charming and extremely private. It would be a great setting for a group dinner or event. Personally, I prefer downstairs. It's darker, livelier, and I like being at street level. The menu historically leaned more heavily into elevated Southern comfort food, which has never been my favorite style of cooking. That's probably why I've tended to prefer The Love for lunch over dinner, especially when Philadelphia has so many Starr restaurants competing for the same night out. I used to get what I remember as a salmon and farro bowl, although the menu appears to have evolved since then. Whatever the exact iteration was, I loved it. Fish and farro are both right in my wheelhouse. I've also enjoyed the kale salad and other lighter dishes. The thing I remember most vividly, though, is the cornbread. It is outrageously good and reason enough to order something for the table. I also give Starr credit for continuing to broaden the range of food styles in his portfolio. Once you've built restaurants across Italian, French, Mexican, English, steakhouses, seafood, and the rest, there are only so many obvious boxes left to check. The Love feels like its own lane: distinctly American, approachable, comfort-driven, and still polished enough to feel like a Starr restaurant. Looking at the menu now, it seems broader than I remember, with more options that appeal to me, and I'd be psyched to go back. The Love probably isn't the first Starr restaurant I'd choose purely based on cuisine, but that says more about the depth of his Philadelphia portfolio than it does about this restaurant. The room, hospitality, location, and execution are all excellent. I'd happily come here any day. Starr doesn't miss.

A few days before the birth of our first child, one of my oldest friends came down from Brooklyn…read morefor what we understood would be my final properly indulgent night before parenthood. We have known each other since we were five, lived together in New York for six years, and stayed close through marriages, children, and jobs that occasionally made us question our sanity. He has seen me at my absolute best and worst, and he was also the person who helped me get fit and regain some discipline while we worked in finance and used excess to numb the misery of those jobs. Choosing Butcher & Singer gave the evening exactly the ceremonial weight it deserved. Steakhouses take on different meanings as you move through life. In your early twenties, an expense account dinner feels like the dream: free drinks and an extravagant meal while you are broke, eating ramen, and sitting at the bottom of the professional food chain. By your early thirties, after enough wining and dining in Midtown Manhattan, the ritual can feel exhausted, and another steakhouse dinner holds little appeal. In your early forties, with young children and fewer unstructured nights, catching up with a lifelong best friend over a great steak feels incredibly meaningful, partly because neither the dinner nor the friendship needs to become a weekly habit. That contrast was especially fitting because my friend is remarkably health-conscious and frugal despite being tremendously successful. He seldom strays from his disciplined diet, while I have historically been much more willing to wander toward fries, dessert, and whatever reckless topping appears on the menu. A traditional steakhouse lets both people leave satisfied: one can order a lean steak and vegetables, while the other can treat the table as permission to suspend judgment for two hours. We shared the same celebratory dinner, but our plates still reflected exactly who each of us had always been. Inside, Butcher & Singer delivers the classic steakhouse fantasy with extraordinary conviction. The soaring ceiling, monumental columns, and amber lighting give the dining room a glamorous scale, while the dark wood, painted murals, and small shaded lamps keep all that grandeur from becoming severe. This is where Stephen Starr's judgment becomes especially apparent, because both Butcher & Singer and nearby Barclay Prime depend on concepts that could age badly: one could become stuffy and antiquated, while the other could become glossy and artificial. Instead, Butcher & Singer still feels transportive, Barclay Prime remains contemporary and cool, and each succeeds because the design, service, and atmosphere are executed with total confidence. Our meal included what I believe was a Caesar salad, filet mignon, asparagus, fries, and a rich chocolate fudge cake. I added a blue cheese garnish to my steak, a completely unnecessary flourish that became the crown jewel on an already excellent piece of meat, while my friend kept his side of the table considerably cleaner. Parc creates a useful third point in Starr's small Rittenhouse constellation: its bar steak and burger offer a more casual form of red meat, somewhere between an ordinary dinner and the full ceremony of Butcher & Singer or Barclay Prime. I appreciate both, but a burger leaves me feeling heavier, while a properly cooked lean steak can feel filling and indulgent without ruining the rest of the night. Only one detail could have improved our experience. We sat at a small table near the host stand and the clock, which was comfortable and entirely reasonable for a table for two, but it left us slightly outside the dramatic center of the room. This was no one's fault, merely the kind of learned preference that comes from seeing the full room afterward and knowing where I would request to sit on a future visit. I hope to return when the budget allows, settle farther inside among the leather booths, glowing lamps, and sweep of the murals, and once again let Butcher & Singer make a rare night with an old friend feel worthy of savoring.
