Carb kings of Pittsburgh!! The bread winners!! If you visit Pittsburgh and get a dinner roll or Italian bread from a restaurant, I hope that it is Mancini's. Mancini's is celebrating their 100 year anniversary and they are still thriving as the best bread in the city! Although not the original location, the Strip District location is iconic! They try out a lot of their fun ideas and also display their celebrational bread displays... like this year's Heinz celebration! From the loaves of bread, cinnamon breads, and the hot pepperoni rolls, everything is worth buying!! The bread is just better than others and the topping/fillings are so wonderful balanced. On our food tour, we were given a sample of the cinnamon swirl bread. The soft dough with the gooey cinnamon filling was such a delicious bite... that we ended up buying a loaf too. Also, I am a sucker for everything and anything focaccia.. and this one was worth it! The cool part is the open view to the back to see the bread being kneaded, pulled, and baked. Mancini's actually invited the hand braided Italian loaf. When they reached capacity of baking in their loaf pans daily, they found that by braiding the loaves.. they no longer needed pans as the bread self contained the rise! We loved Mancini's already! But every time I come, get served a fresh loaf, and walk out with a full bag, I love Mancini's even more!! read more

We stoped in really quick to try their Pepperoni roll. No line, we were in an out. The staff was very welcoming. They all greeted us and even offered my daughter a free bread stick. The pepperoni roll was very delicious though. The bread was soft and was very delicious with the marinara sauce I purchased. It's a small bakery and it was crowded when we stopped by on a Saturday early afternoon. They kept the line moving and were handing out samples of a delicious pumpkin roll! This location is more of a market/to go. The ambiance was that of a very small bread store but well maintained. The service was good but not great and I only took a star away because when I asked questions, I feel like I frustrated them by asking 2 fairly simple questions. All I got was the pepperoni rolls and some bread sticks. The pepperoni rolls were very good, they would have had a little more pepperoni but overall great. Ventured in here, as it is a staple famous local bakery (and one that notably supplies Primanti's and many other local restaurants), and it was open when I was here around lunchtime (they close in the late afternoon). The breads here are all extremely fresh and they have a lot of selections. My only critique is that they charged me 25 cents to slice a loaf of bread. I think it is an extremely petty thing for a bakery to do to its customers. Sliced bread is no longer a novelty, despite the saying. I hope they will rethink this. (And even explain why this even is a thing. It is a bakery and it took them an extra minute? Is that why?) I think I would still come back to try some other offerings that they have here that I haven't yet tried. I won't ever lose my taste for good ole bread. read more

Ah Mancini's Bread a family tradition! When we would come to visit da Burgh my Uncle John would go up to the McKees Rocks location or this one to get Bread. I remember smelling this bread being toasted and it brought back so many pleasant memories. So while we were recently in town I was gonna just pick some up at Giant Eagle but since we were on The Strip and saw this location I NEEDED TO GO IN. A lot of locals go and outta Townes's as they buy a bunch to take home and freeze for another time. I just picked up some bread, sliced and a small focaccia with cheese. The bread is worth it as is everything else.. that small/mini focaccia was delicious. The salty, herby goodness of this and the hit of that cheese hit the spot. This is carb heaven and worth it.. It's a small location but it has what you need. It's on The Strip parking is catch as catch can or ask locals about it. Go get you some stuff you will be glad you did. read more

I know a lot about Mancini's. From the time I was a youngster in McKees Rocks, I've bought and enjoyed the bread there. I was sent to church every Sunday and given money for the collection plate and for the bakery. Our personal family favorite was always the twist, and even after I moved beyond living with family, that choice remained. Later in my life, the bakery being open 24 hours was a great thing for me, since I was a DJ and often didn't get done until midnight or later. I can't tell you how many times I would buy a loaf of hot twist and eat the soft center on the way home. In the morning, I would attack the crust with butter and eggs over easy. I moved across town about 20 years ago and really missed the hometown places I had grown up with. When I found that a Mancini's much closer to me had opened, I planned a trip there. I gave up driving a few years ago and can't get around on a whim as I used to. I do a lot of volunteer work, and a considerable amount of that happens at the convention center downtown. With my power chair, Mancini's is within my traveling distance. I will admit to going a little crazy when I first found the place. I got a full loaf of twist, a mini loaf and salt sticks, along with a pepperoni roll for David. I don't do pepperoni any longer. As I've gotten older, I've found that the heartburn isn't worth the flavor. Over the next few days, I ate all 6 of the salt sticks, the mini loaf and nearly the whole loaf of twist. Even though they weren't out of the oven warm, they were as good as I remembered. I can see myself making the trip to the strip just for the bread. The place is set up well and the line moves quickly. It was pretty busy when I was there, (on the weekend), and I think I'd prefer to go at a time that wasn't as busy, since it looks like they've added some newer items I've never seen before. I saw that they make a Pittsburgh favorite, chipped ham sandwich, that I'd like to try, but it is only offered on Saturdays. I have to admit that I liked the fast service and although the prices seemed to be much higher than I remembered, it was worth every cent. I can remember making the trip to the bakery around Christmas. My relatives ignored a lot of my food, and I'm a great cook, prefering just the Mancini's with a little butter. My whole order, (and I bought a lot), was nothing but crumbs at the end of Christmas day. If you haven't tried the twist, you don't know what you're missing. There is nothing like a ham sandwich on thick siced twist bread. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. read more

While I was out and about this past weekend in Pittsburgh, I heard the familiar gurgles of an empty tummy. Since it was a weird in-between meals time, I didn't want to grab something super heavy and there were no street meat vendors selling chicken on a stick. In this instance a pepperoni roll is the perfect compromise! If you're not from Western Pennsylvania (or *gag* West Virginia) then you may not know what a pepperoni roll is exactly. This on-the-go snack is like a portable slice of pizza. No fuss and no mess. A ready to go meal that was created in Wheeling, West Virginia. It features a flaky, light dough stuffed with mozzarella cheese and pepperoni. And while WVA may have invented it, Mancini's in Pittsburgh PERFECTED the pepperoni roll. Mancini's is another one of those Pittsburgh staples that locals just can't seem to get enough of. While their original bakery is in McKees Rocks, this smaller bakery gives an authentic taste of their original shop on the streets of the Strip District. It has all the good you'd find in McKees Rocks without the long line. And on warm summer days, you can walk along the sidewalk and get a pepperoni roll on the go! No need to even go in the store. I personally think this is the best pepperoni roll in the region. The pepperoni is always fresh and has great flavor. There is plenty of cheese without being overly gooey. And the bread. Oh Mymancini's it's good. But that's what they've built their name on isn't it? The other thing of note about their pepperoni rolls are the lack of grease. So many other shops drip and are soggy. That's not the case here. Perfectly crisped and no sludge in sight. One thing you may not know about Italians, is that we love bread. Bread in any form. And going into a family bakery is like walking into a candy shop. I always get a rush of adrenaline when I walk into Mancini's because I want to sample ALL of the breads. From focaccia to salt sticks. Rustic loafs to sourdough. Mancini's has it all and each carry treat is just as good as the last. I did end up walking out with a mini cheese focaccia this trip. We tried Mancini's for the first time last weekend and were very impressed. We got the pull-apart rolls, the focaccia, and the pepperoni rolls. The pepperoni rolls stayed warm for a good hour until we got home. Loved the sauce that came with it too! Great purchase all around and we will definitely be back. read more

Holy. Moly. I cannot believe I did not discover this place earlier. See picture succession below to see how quickly we (ie TWO of us) devoured an entire baguette in one night. It was AMAZING and I regret nothing except that it was then gone. We also got the focaccia baguette - with just a little olive oil we literally made a meal of it. Service is great. There are few things more Pittsburgh than Mancini's bread. I have never tried a bread from them that I did not like. Their Italian loaf is simple and delicious. Their sandwich rolls are soft but sturdy enough to stuff tons of goodies with. Their pepperoni rolls are insanely delicious- a MUST try. Most recently, I tried a loaf of their rustic baguette. Crusty on the outside and soft on the inside- it was the most perfect baguette I have ever had. It went well with the charcuterie I made over the weekend and I plan on using the rest to make fresh garlic bread (yum!). The store itself is very small, but the staff is excellent & have become adjusted to being so busy. They will get you in & out of there in no time, without rushing you on your selection.
