Taco Tuesday: my wife and I went to a new place for lunch, within walking distance. Discovered it's not new...has been holding this spot down for more than 20 years, serving home-style Mexican plates, including a very good flavored menudo, though I wish they had used honeycomb tripe. We stopped in before 11am (they open at 10), and were the only ones dining in. There is a parking lot to the side, for customers of the businesses in this building (Mamy's and the nail/hair salon). We later learned that they were short staffed this day, but were still greeted with a smile and a motion to sit where we wanted. A really good basket of freshly fried corn tortilla chips were presented, with a good, hot salsa (good indication that their chilaquiles would be good...need to try that next time). The chef also was serving as the waiter this day, and apologized for delays (which honestly weren't that bad). I asked about the Taco Tuesday specials, learned that all meat soft shell meat (beef, chicken, pork) tacos were $1.50 (instead of the normal $2), but we wanted hard shell ($3 each), so couldn't take advantage. We got 6 shredded beef and 3 shredded chicken, and they came out freshly made and fully dressed (with crisp iceberg, cheese, salsa, and crema). The shells tasted freshly made, and both the chicken and beef shredded were excellent, with no fat or gristle and good flavor. A little bit later, I got my menudo, along with some OK flour tortillas. The broth was excellent: full of flavor, and hearty without being oily. There was a hoof in the soup, probably to let the connoisseurs (not me) how authentic it is. It didn't have too much hominy, so ate all of that up. It had plenty of tripe, but it was all the blanket/flat variety (none from the second stomach chamber (the kind usually found in pho), which I've now learned is what I much prefer). I probably ate half of it, and sipped the rest of the great broth and any orphaned corn pieces. It's old school here, with the items being entered into an old fashioned cash register from hand written notes. They do take credit card, which is how we paid. My wife learned that the original Mamy has passed. Their daily special is 2 soft tacos with a bottle of beer for $6...knowing now how tasty their tacos are, that's a great deal. read more

Just had the best Mexican food at Mamy's place right now. I had to leave a review because I hope everyone gets to try it! From the moment we walked in and were greeting by the sweet owner, we feel in love! I was craving filet diabla and usually I'm really underwhelmed because I love my diabla authentic and spicy. They did not disappoint! It was one of the best ever. My husband had the steak picado and he enjoyed it to the last bite! Delicious! Chips and Salsa were so yummy! FOOD: The hard shell tacos were amazing! Three bucks is pretty pricey for a taco, but the flavors, crunch and love they put into them is amazing. The side of red salsa was flavorful and not too hot. Perfect, will be back here again. SERVICE: the older gentleman who took my order by phone and attended me when I arrived for pickup had a warm personable character that I appreciate in a host. If you want authentic Mexican cuisine I'm sure you would enjoy the food here. This place reminds me of a time that I went to Cobo San Lucas we took an off the resort scenic tour around town. Well our taxi.driver was really down to earth and he enjoyed us so much that he offered our group lunch at his mommas home. And this restaurant was warm and welcoming just like his mother's home. My order was Menudo and deep fried tilapia which includes rice and beans. My friend ordered chicken fajitas which also came with rice and beans with warm flour tortillas. OMG the horchata is a must try. I was craving a great Mexican lunch and they understood the assignment. My food was delicious A+. Nothing survived for leftovers. read more

This place was pretty good not too expensive. The staff were very kind and funny to talk to. You can definitely tell this restaurant has been around unchanged for years very vintage. Reminds me of an old diner in Mexico. The pineapple agua refresca was so refreshing although a bit on the sweet side. My party and I ordered the nachos, carne asada fries and quite a few tacos. I also ordered their $6 special where you get 2 tacos and a domestic beer (bud light) which is not too bad. Their regular tacos are $2 and I don't they have a taco Tuesday menu I think the $6 special is considered that but you can get it anytime. Although I did have a couple of notes the fish taco definitely a no go no seasoning and the fish fry seasoning was old so it didn't stick the fish and it tasted like it was fried in old grease. The shrimp taco as well had the same problem although I would say a red flag to me was that it seem like the shrimp taco was fried in the same old oil as the fish and most likely the same fish fry seasoning was used on it. Also the carne asada was lacking in flavor as well. The salsa they used were also a bit spicy. Overall the food was good not knock your socks off which is why I can't give it a 5/5. There are times when I'll go through a neighborhood and find all sorts of restaurants that you never knew existed. Some are literal hole-in-the-wall. Mamy's Place is one of those hole-in-the-wall restaurants where you are so amazed by the food. I came here on a Thursday around dinner time (5pm-ish) and found the owners just chilling at the table. The moment we came in though, they jumped up and I felt like the red carpet was rolled out for me. They seated me promptly, talked to me a bit, and even provided suggestions. I got the camarones de diablo. I've had this dish at other places, and let me tell you, this one lives up to its name. The dish, itself, is a fairly large portion of salad, rice, beans, shrimp, and five or so corn tortillas. I couldn't even finish it all. Nonetheless, this one was flavorful where the spice does not overwhelm the flavor at all and you can actually enjoy it without worry that you're going to burn your tongue and mouth to holy heck. They also give chips and salsa as you sit and you can tell the salsa is fresh and spicy. This is definitely a gem and worth checking out if you are in the area. read more

We ended a 10-day trip from the east coast with a trip to Mamy's for dinner. Had LOTS of Mexican food over the time and Mamy's really hit the nail on the head with our chorizo torta and chicken fajitas in terms of taste. This is a VERY small space with the cook being the only English speaker at the time. A couple issues - the fajitas came with a HUGE portion of food, but only 2 tortillas and we were charged an extra $0.75 for 2 more tortillas (not a large charge but the initial 2 tortillas never could've sufficed for the amount of food given). We were then encouraged to pay with cash (luckily we had enough on us). And then... about an hour later, both of us had intestinal pain followed by several trips to the restroom - not a great way to end vacation. I moved to this area about five years ago and of course the first thing you do is check the area out. I found a lot of cool spots but I think by far this is one of the coolest. The mom and pop shop rock it out and are on point. Always have had good food and service here. Try everything but definitely do the street tacos. Just make sure you don't accidentally get the other one although a little better because it comes with cream. In my opinion you can just do the street taco especially on Tuesday. Instead of $1.25 it's only $1.00 do it to it people. If you live in the area and have had it you know. If you have visited the area and eaten here you know. But for anyone out there that may stop by you need to give it a try. read more

Always my go to spot when catching the blue line off Anaheim and Long Beach Blvd. They offer a 2 tacos and 1 beer special for 6 dollars. Came by for some fish tacos today and they were delicious! I'm glad I found them. We walked in and our waiter sat us down right away. We ordered the horchata and watermelon water to start and the drinks were good, especially the watermelon water. Our fish tacos came out pretty quick and then we ordered some more. A little hole in the wall restaurant near the Anaheim St. Metro station. You can literally see the metro station from any table you are near. The restaurant itself is very kitsch in its decor. With flowers and old movie posters on the walls. The service is nice but it really can't save it from the very salty food that was served. I think my whole party felt dehydrated after eating. The chips and meat were all overly salted. I had the carne asada plate and I really had to drink extra water. I will say that the refried beans were excellent. I love a good side of beans. The service is nice but I wouldn't come here again unless someone took me here. And I'll probably refrain from the chips and the meats. Stick to the salad and beans. read more

Driving down Long Beach Blvd we saw their sign, "2 tacos and 1 beer $6" it's a hot day today and a cold beer sounded great. A quick U-turn, parking at side of building. and we were quickly seated. They took our order right away and our VERY cold beer was on the table in minutes with complimentary chips and salsa. Authentic salsa with just the right amount of heat (pretty spicy), a little cilantro and onion = perfect. We ordered asada tacos with everything on them. Was expecting small street tacos but were pleasantly surprised with 2 tortillas stuffed with carne asada, salsa and cabbage. Several radish slices and limes accompanied the tacos. To me, this is perfection. We asked ther owner how long they'd been in the place; 40 years!! Can't believe it's taken us this long to find this Mamy's. We will be back! read more

Portion sizes are huge and the food is just amazing. I got a dry shrimp burrito plus the gwak is also top notch with a little kick. Some would consider this place a little hold in the wall but it's so much more than that with authentic decor that makes you forget you're steps away from LB blvd. Recently I was invited by a lady friend of mine to meet up for a Sunday dinner, lo & behold it was "Summer Sundays" Appetizers & Drink Specials, cool beans! I had me some carne asada nachos, which the on it waitress informed me was a smaller version of the regular nachos. The nachos were really good and FRESH! Now down to what made me write the review, Tacos de Chicharrón!!! No Fucking joke here, they were really really good, I told myself, "Self, these are best goddamn tacos de Chicharrón to ever gain privleged entry into your pansa" definitely my favorite of the night. The Chicharrón was the thick real one with just the right amount of bits of meat, not that thin stuff they sell at 99-ccent stores but the real deal carnicería style! It was cooked in a delicious home-style authentic Chile Verde sauce! Came for the food ended up staying and riding a great buzz from a few of the buy 2 get 1 free beer deals. We've been driving by this place forever and saying, "We should go there!" each time. I kind of liked those days. We can't say that anymore. Now we just say, "Ugh. Remember when we went there?" I don't want to be hard on a small family place, but we just didn't think it was very good. The guacamole was more like avocado soup, pureed within an inch of its life. We had to season it with salt, pepper and Tapatio to put some flavor in it. My burrito was just bland. I couldn't taste any seasoning on the meat. It's not bad food, exactly. I just think whoever's cooking it needs to get acquainted with the spice rack. Everyone in there is really sweet and friendly and they were very quick with everything. After just moving in to the area we figured let's check out the new surroundings. Lot's of cool spots then we fell slap dab in to this place. And let's just say oh yeah what a spot. From the friendly staff to all the good food. I would say try the taco's the stake, Chicken, heck any there all good. Hard shell soft she'll do it all. The chili Relleno is worth it as well. And why stop there you could go with the enchiladas of any type. And can you believe one time we even did the nacho. So here is where we will some it up. I know all the things I have mentioned are at most Mexican food restaurants. But if you give these guys a shot you may just leave your Mexican food restaurant in the dust. This has quickly become my new favorite Mexican spot in Long Beach. Wholesome, down to earth, friendly, great atmosphere, and killer food puts Mamy's at the top of my list. I've had the Diablo Shrimp and their street tacos ($1 on taco Tuesday) and they've both been really good. The service has always been really fast and friendly. It's so cheap too!! They have their own parking spots in a lot adjacent to the restaurant and they are right next to the Blue Line Metro stop on LB Blvd. We'll be back really soon for sure! read more
