Seafood has a Mexican Gulf Coast flair. Tasty. Our waitress said it was seafood /Asian fusion but I think she's confused with her terms. Just b/c you use soy sauce on fried rice, it doesn't make it a fused style of cuisine. Prices are reasonable, staff is attentive. Let me preface this by saying I really dislike to have to give a negative review for a place, but I feel like I have to be honest to help out fellow yelpers. I saw this was a new seafood place in Katy and I was craving some shrimp plus the majority of the reviews were positive. I did see some mentioning slow service, and boy should I have heeded that warning. I don't know thst I've ever experienced a scene quite like what I saw at Mambo Seafood tonight. First of all the place was packed out with people which should be a good thing, but it becomes clear quickly that it's because of the horrendous organization of the restaurant. There is not really a hostess stand so when you walk in you just awkwardly stand in the doorway until one of (several?) hostesses buzz around you staring into a tablet which I guess does their seating. It was really unorganized and chaotic, which is a recurring theme here. I thankfully passed that up as I was by myself and headed straight for the Only open spot at the bar. Behind the bar were 3 guys trying and failing to put orders in the computer, shuck oysters, give and take food to the patrons at the bar, and retrieve bar drinks for the countless waitresses just standing there yelling at them from one end of the bar. This was the most inefficient setup I've ever seen and it made the experience of sitting at the bar, which should be relaxing, feel stressful. I literally sat in front of these guys for 15 minutes before I could get anyone to acknowledge my existence so I could order. Now to give these guys some credit they were nice and helpful when I actually could get service from them. They seemed overwhelmed more than anything. Another major issue is the bars use of printing tickets for everything you order. It's just a messy way to do things. Speaking of messy, the area behind the bar was an absolute mess with oysters and dirt from oysters all over the place, used trays and empty beer mugs sitting around. Just not very appealing to sit in front of while you eat. Once I actually got my food it was decent but not worth the effort it took to obtain it. My fried shrimp where smashed flat and butterflied, lacking flavor but were passable. The stuffed crab was dry, and the only good thing was the shrimp rice which was almost as good as what you'd get at a Japanese restaurant. Alas that alone isn't worth coming back for. The most frustrating thing about this experience was seeing how many staff this place has yet they all seem to either stand around or they don't really know what they should be doing. It's really strange to see. I think a lot of this could be corrected with some concrete systems put in place and solid training. This restaurant just operates like everyone is running around trying to do multiple jobs and that causes mass chaos. I'd suggest the managers rethink how they run the restaurant or you're going to drive people away. The 2 stars is simply for the food because it was alright. But it wasn't good enough to come back. That's all I have to say. I'm pretty disappointed in Mambo Seafood. Take your business to Pappadeaux if you want fresh, excellent seafood and exceptional personal service even while eating at the bar. read more

Ever since they've opened the place has been PACKED! Lots of parking because of it's location, so that's a plus. The inside was much bigger than I expected. Even w/ all the tables/booths inside and the outside patio there was still a line of people waiting for a table. The servers, hostess, and bus boys were very friendly and had great attitudes and despite thr crowd the restaurant was very clean. I ordered the 2 piece fish, 6 shrimps, and mambo shrimp rice. It came w/ a roll, tartar sauce, and soy sauce. The food smelled delicious and I had to take a taste before I got home. To say the fish and shrimp was fried, they weren't greasy. Normally fried dishes have alot of excess grease, but not this place. Everything was pretty good, my fav was the fried rice. It had plenty of shrimp and it was delicious. The portions were huge, especially for $9. I'd rate the food a 4/5 and the customer service a 5/5. I wish I had a pic but I devoured it before the thought crossed my mind. I'd def visit this place again. The seafood soup/bisque and the red snapper look tasty so I'll try those on my next visit. read more

First time here. very unusual place. I had yummy fresh shrimp. They even have a fresh seafood counter. Their main side is shrimp fried rice everything was delicious. My husband got to the fish fillets with fried shrimp with fries. he did not like his he said nothing had flavor. Pricing was very good for what you get. read more

The food is delicious. Unique cafeteria-esque atmosphere, average service, clean. My only complaint is that I've tried to visit two separate times with my family, and we've been turned away or told there was over an hour wait when we counted AT LEAST eight empty tables. We've really been craving the shrimp rice, and its frustrating to argue with the hostess both times, then being told to sit outside in 103 degree heat. I don't see how blatantly lying to a paying customers while open tables are visibly available is an appropriate way for a hostess to behave. The hostesses should be properly trained how to seat and communicate in an effective manner with guests, because at this point it is a severe problem. read more

I literally joined yelp just so I could warn people about this restaurant. Where do I start, the service was laughable. We did not get the entrees we ordered, never saw the appetizer, and all the food was cold by the time it got to our table. Their "margarita" does not contain any tequila or liquor at all as was explained to me by the manager. My experience here was so awful that I completely lost my appetite. After countless failed attempts to get the staff to fix the problems I decided to give up and quickly make my exit after taking care of the bill. I'm sure not everyone that dines here will experience this many issues, but I can assure you that I will never be going back. If you are reading this, simply choose another place to eat. read more

The price of food is amazing and it taste really good. I was skeptical to go in but I wasn't expecting it to be the way it was on the inside. Lots of Spanish waitresses so if you don't understand Spanish or aren't good with strong accents you might want to bring someone to help you if you don't get a waitress that speaks English. Opened in Katy a while ago and it's been so busy we haven't gone. I've eaten at the other locations in the last so I knew what to expect for the food. Pretty basic fried and grilled seafood with a Mexican flair. Like every new restaurant it's crazy busy, so once the crowds died down a bit we went over. The food is good and the portions are big. The restaurant is open and poorly setup so it's very noisy inside. The waitstaff was busy and not extremely attentive. Overall it's a pretty good place not too expensive and the food is good as well. God food for value, it's not gourmet but it's a hell of a lot better than the shit they serve at long john silvers. read more

Two stars for the food because it was excellent. But the service was terrible. It took us over an hour to get our food and my boyfriend ended up having to leave because his lunch break was over. Our waitress did not care and rolled her eyes when I asked for my boyfriends food to go. Management ended up giving our food free, we didn't want to get free food but after the horrible service we had, we will take it. So this is my 2nd visit here and I only give two stars because the food was good and the waiter Tony at the bar was really nice. But I am very upset that I ordered the salmon and I sat there for about 10 minutes before I was told that they were out of salmon. This was the case on my first visit also. So I decided to order the red snapper. It took 30-40 minutes for my food to come. Now I understand that it was busy today and there were lines of people waiting for a table but I truly don't believe anyone should have to wait that long for their food. Every 10 mins or so I would think maybe it's coming but nothing. The waiter kept checking on it feeling so bad I was waiting this long. I wanted to just leave at some point but kept thinking "I've waited this long I might as well stay now". After the long wait the food finally came and it was actually pretty good. Just upsetting to see everyone around me get their food and leave while I was still waiting. To top it off I wasn't comp'd my drink or anything for the inconvenience. read more

Unfortunately for being the first time at this location it started off in a bad way. My coworkers & I went for our lunch break and we sat down outside. We were sitting for almost 15min, no one came to at least ask for our drinks. So one of us went to ask for service & they told her the waitress will be right with you. Again, we waited another 15 and still no waitress. We kept seeing other waitresses attend surrounding tables & with us, nothing. I then went to seek for someone & the same thing was told to me. We only pushed because we only had an hr lunch. I asked what the issue was, then they told me someone was coming & I explained to her we were already told that once & we were on a time crunch, she then replied with saying someone will attend us. No apologies or anything. Mind you I know how busy it can be but the courtesy to make sure we were OK or so didnt even happen. Again we sat there and nothing. We walked out. 3rd swing and Im out...As usual service was super crappy...food was usual at best, took 20 minutes or so to get my oysters... thought they had gone down the coast to fish em out, but they really were NOT that fresh...LOL...My pal ordered some Seafood plate, the Tilapia of course tasted like Crap...of course when you farm raise Talapia for those of you that dont know, they are never fed...They are raised in the same tanks that white Bass are cultivated in. The Talapia are scavengers that feed on the waste of the White Bass that must be raised in a much more controlled aqua environment. The white Bass are fed only pellets of protein and a small fatty content. Six months of feeding in these, (Now Talapia loaded) tanks, they eat nothing but POOOO...So at the end of the day...if the batter in the cake your baking mixes with dog poop and though you use the best recipe for home made icing in the world....you guessed it...its gonna come out tasting like poop...(pardon the pun)...LOL. OH and BTW I told our waitress in Spanish (Im fluent FYI) as I passed the plate, that it tasted like dirt and almost the entire filet was undisturbed...she giggled as she walked away (did nothing to correct this situation) and got to wait about 12 minutes for my tab...dont have the heart not to tip, I left $3.50....not bad for my $53 dollar lunch plus tip with my buddy...we left a Polaroid picture...so if they ever wanna see our faces again... read more

Visited on a Saturday afternoon with a party of 6 and were told it would be approx. 25 minutes. When the 25 min. mark was approaching, we checked with the hostess and were told we were next. A party of 5 came up and they started to take them to a table and told us it was because they were willing to sit outside. No problem but then they sat them inside the restaurant right in front of us. A table opened up about 5 minutes later and we were seated. We ordered gumbo and another appetizer. We also ordered the Fish of the Day as one of our entrees. The drinks came pretty quickly and the waitress came back to tell us they were out of the Fish of the Day but we could substitute a larger piece of fish for a couple dollars more but it wouldn't come with the sides. Didn't make sense that we are paying more for a larger piece of fish but we don't get the sides either but no problem. At this point we just wanted food. Waited 45 minutes and no appetizers. At this point, we decided to call it quits and never tasted the food! I think the hostesses need training on sticking to the list-don't mind waiting but I don't like getting bumped and then they have attitude. Hopefully the service will improve since they are new but it will be awhile before I take that gamble again. Sent corporate an email three times because I would rather let them know directly that there was a problem, but no response. read more
