Three words describe the food...de-lic-ous! We ordered the Chicken Kebob Plate with a generous mound of savory rice & the Chicken Shwarma Plate with green salad. Also a large bowl of Hummus that comes with plenty of tender triangles of pita bread. It was all fresh, hot & very flavorful. The chicken wasn't dry & dipping it into the supplied garlic sauce brings it to a whole other level. The hummus reminded me of the wonderful, but now defunct Sahara Restaurant that used to be on 2nd Street in Belmont Shore, Long Beach. Warm, rich & creamy. We would squeeze fresh lemon juice into it...man that was good! You order at the counter. The man behind the counter will never win The Mr. Hospitality award but we did get him to crack a smile when he presented the food to our table & we were extremely excited to see it. We stopped in on a whim and ordered to-go. Tried their lamb shank, baba ghanouj (ganoosh), foul (a fava bean dish), and their homemade baklava which is far better than any we have ever tasted, because it is NOT drippingly oversweet, her baklava has wonderfully balanced flavors and texture. The baba ghanouj is fresh with little chunks of all the veges, and hard not to just eat it all up with a spoon! You can taste all the veges, and it is light, not heavy like many other restaurants. We ordered the foul becausem the photo looked so good, and it was delicious! It is saucy light, fresh and spicy (but not hot spicy). It is kind of like a warm salsa with Mediterranean flavors instead of Mexican flavors. The lamb shank came on a bed of flavored rice (even their rice is special!) and was falling off the bone tender. They sent us home with a container of the sauce it was braised in (which had big chunks of veges). Everything, including the hummus, pickled turnips, and the garlic dip is obviously freshly homemade. The owners were very kind and informative of the dishes we ordered. This is my new favorite restaurant! UPDATE (11/12/16): I ordered online through Yelp and the food was excellent as always, but I found out that when you order online, the restaurant is charged 20%! Restaurant margins are pretty small for mom and pop places and that was probably their whole profit, so I will just call in my pickup order next time. One of my favorite joints to get my fix for Lamb Kabob and Chicken Schwarma. It can get busy during weekdays so call ahead to order. You have lot of options for take out food also. Check the menu. Hubby luvs Kababs and I luv seafood. So, every now and then I have to throw him a bone and try to find a tasty Kabab restaurant in OC. It's always a surprise to find a Kabab gem in OC because I always compare them to my hometown of Glendale. So, we had lunch at the highly rated Mama's Kabab which a very casual order at the counter and the server (i.e. Mom) will bring your food to your table. This is a Mom & Pop place and "Mom" warmly greeted us and said to please select any table......so sweet. We ordered: (1) Complimentary Warm Pita Bread, Hummus, Pickled Radish & Pickles: A pleasant surprise ...... the pita was fresh & the hummus was relish! (2) Foul: A hot appetizer soup/stew with fava bens, garlic, lemon and spices. My first time trying this type of soup and it was fabulous. Served piping hot, well seasoned and just plain yummy! (3) Combo Platter: Marinated Beef & Chicken Kababs and two Kafta Kababs grilled on skewers served with rice and grilled onions and green peppers. The beef kabob was so tender and delectable. The chicken kabob was good and the Kafta Kababs were kinda dry but still hit the spot..... I was "hungry" :) I was kinda disappointed that my platter did not include a grilled tomato..... this is key to most Armenian and/or Mediterranean plates. (4) Chicken Kabab: Marinated boneless breast of chicken grilled on skewers and served with rice and veggies. Hubby enjoyed his meal! (5) Complimentary Baklava: "Dad" served us two slices of comp baklava which were fresh and yummy! (6) Combo Platter To Go: I ordered a combo platter to go for sonny boy which he really enjoyed. Quite possibly the worst Mediterranean food I have ever had. The pita bread was dry and stale with some pieces cold and a couple of them warm. The chicken was dry and the beef was pretty much just black char. There wasn't enough rice but it wasn't good so it's not like I wanted any more of it. The tomatoes were cold. Super nice couple with great kabobs, hummus and baklava that is top notch. The portions are perfect for 1 meal if you're hungry or a meal and a snack if you're not on a mission to finish it all. I could not get enough of the hummus and pitas! The chicken shawarma came with marinated chicken breast, rice, garlic sauce and tabbouleh; $8.99. I thought the chicken was a tad overly salted but it evens out if you eat it with the rice. If you're cutting carbs, it will definitely be too salty to try to eat on it's own. They gave us free hummus and pickles...I'm not sure why pickles came because I've never had it with Mediterranean fare but what's a prego lady to do? Down the hatch! One other GF got the veggie plate and her grape leaves looked amazing but the falafel looked a tad....crisp. The baklava is so good it deserves it's own separate paragraph. It is light and crunchy and the entire little triangle was not super sweet. They must use a very light drizzle on the honey sauce / glaze because the top phyllo isn't very sticky to the touch. I ordered 2 servings (4 triangles) and we each had 1. I got my last triangle to go and the owner tossed in a extra to make it a even square. :) $2 for 2 triangles is a bargain when it is this fresh and perfectly made. I would come here just to get the baklava! I felt bad that 2 GFs and I went on a weekday at apx 7 pm and there was only 3 other people the entire 2 hours we were there. This mom & pop establishment definitely knows how to encapsulate bold flavors in everything they make and has become my go-to spot for mediterranean dishes! ----The Food---- Combo Platter ($12.99)- This plate comes with beef, chicken, and a kafta kabab supplemented with jasmine rice, grilled tomatoes, pickled veggies, and an invigorating tazkiti sauce. Hummus and pita bread are also provided, complimentary as long as you dine-in. All of their protein have an unrivaled succulence and robustness in flavor. The tazkiti sauce has strong notes of cucumber, garlic, and lemon juice that goes deliciously well with the meal too! My minor complaint would be that the pita bread could be fluffier, but the silky, tasty hummus that accompanies the bread basket will override that flaw. Also, when the meal is done, the owners usually give a free piece of baklava that's sweet, flaky and wonderfully made. It's often sold for $1.50 each. Chicken Kabab Plate ($8.99)- Out of the three proteins I've tried, my favorite is the chicken. Because of that, the few times I've come here, this is the plate I order and it comes with the same things as above! The chicken chunks are big too so one plate can easily fill up the average person. ----- Conclusion: One taste of the meat and it'll be like mama slapped you in the mouth with flavor and you'll thank her for it! This is a work lunch spot for me so I'm usually in and out; casual, order-at the-counter spot with spacious seating/tv. The owners are really nice and welcoming, I always get free baklava with my orders. They know how to wheel ya in - new business, gotta build that loyal customer base and sweeten us up! I am leaning towards a 3.5 stars for this mom and pop establishment. The wait was a bit long for this place. There were only 3 clients in front of us and it took almost 15-20 mins. to get our order. At 6pm on a Friday, it should of been much more efficient. By the way, we ordered the combination plate along with the chicken schwarama sandwhich. The food here was a little more than okay. A bit on the salty side though. Their menu were full of Mediterranean/Armenian food. Dolma, burekas, kebabs, etc. My hubby liked the food because it was salty and to his liking.. but i just really thought it was A-Ok with a little edge. My recommendation is the chicken and steak kebab. The ground beef kebab was a bit dry.......The rice was the worst.. it isn't even Basmati rice.. Just some rice that looks like it has been fried with butter and cooked on a stove. Parking was abundant so that is always a plus! I will try this place again.. I hope they make it.. After helping my sister organize her classroom before school starts, I told her about this place and their delicious food and best of all it was just about 7 minutes away from the school she teaches at. It was kind of pass lunch peak hour - 1:30pm...and so there was plenty of parking and I see that they aren't covered by construction poles anymore...you can now see the front of their store but there was still construction next door. It was pretty empty - except for one table of diner. The same people - owners - greeted us and since I mentioned that the combo platter was the best - that what my sister ordered. My boyfriend also ordered the combo platter which we split because I knew I wouldn't be able to finish a platter myself. Same great tasting food and yummy yummy hummus - which my sister (a very picky eater) really liked too. And again the owner gave us three pieces of baklava which I never seem to save room for cause I fill up on the yummy pita bread and hummus in the beginning. When I review restaurants I usually give them a 4 if they are average and have the food, decor, service, and price equal to the average restaurant. A bad rating on one of these factors could be made up by another one. In the case of Mama's Kabobs the food and service was so good that it made up for its lackluster decor and then earned it an extra star. I had a beef kabob plate and my coworker had the lamb kabob. I had the pleasure of enjoying both and I have to say this place is near unbeatable. Everything about the food was excellent, from the taste, texture, composition, and presentation. The lamb practically melted in my mouth. The beef showed me flavors I didn't know it was capable of. It was divine. Not only that the service was impeccable. The man behind the register allowed us to pay afterwards, a rarity in this type of place, and even gave us a free baklava for dessert! Which I have to say was absolutely amazing! Crispy, and not too overwhelming in its sweetness or nuttiness. Overall while the decor here isn't great, so many other aspects of it make up for it and then some, earning it a solid 5 stars. It was pretty quiet inside for lunch time, but that might have been due to construction going on within the shopping center. It looked like it had closed down at first. Wow what a disappointment not only was my beef dried, hard, dense, over cooked it had not flavorm. The rice was not that great this visit? The hummus was still good and the eggplant dish was too die for, very tasty and had a punch we enjoyed it. The garlic sauce left much to be desired ad we have had better, I think this place is copying one of the better places, not even close. We will no longer be a customer of Mama's and will continue to drive to Palos Verdes to get our Middle Eastern food. We have been eating this food since 1975 and know how it should be seasoned & cooked. Ok-so no lunch special. Got a number#7 chicken showarma. I'm not a big fan of lamb. Close to Lunch time and hardly anybody here-not a good sign. We love mediterranean food that's why we are so thankful having Mama's Kabab close by. The Kafta Kabab is my personal favorite but the Chicken Kabab is very flavorful too. The Shrimp Kabab is served with a special red sauce which tastes like lobster sauce in butter. Their garlic sauce is a fine pair in any of their dishes. They have a lot of appetizers. We tried the grape leaves. I think that one is an acquired taste that I need to work on. But not to worry because I can always rely on the free hummus, pita and pickled beets and dill that they serve. It's kids friendly too because they have burgers, fries and chicken tenders. If I have any gripe, I'd say, they don't serve basmati rice BUT their buttered rice with parsley is good enough substitute. It gets busy during lunch time as the people from nearby offices flock here for kabab fix. So, try to beat the traffic and arrive early because if not you will get stuck in line for a while. Warning: They have a limited staff-- the cook (mama), the cashier (papa), and a helper/bus lady so the order takes about 15 minutes to be served... but it's worth the wait :) read more

Ok... Saturday night, looking for a place to take the family that was reasonably priced. Didn't want the usual so we checked Yelp and saw that this place had 4.5 stars and one dollar sign... our kind of place! OH MY GOODNESS! This place is amazing. I got the Combo platter and shared it with our kids and my wife got the chicken shawarma. The lady that owns the place could not be any nicer. She makes everything on the spot as you order it. The hummus is made daily but hands down the must order item is the Baklava. Now hear me out... I don't like Baklava... but her husband showed up as we were finishing our meals and he decided to drop a plate of baklava at our table, on the house. I figure, "well the food has been great to this point and it would be rude if I didn't a least take a bite"... I now LOVE baklava. It was so buttery and sweet and the texture was amazing... in fact, so amazing that we ordered four more pieces (two orders)!!! Definitely mixing this place into our regular rotation. Third, pricing is very affordable and reasonable! Last but not least, the FOOD, oh em gee. I grew up in Sydney so there was a large Middle Eastern population and I am accustomed to Arabic food. Their lamb shank was amazeballs; the meat falls right off the bone and they did well with covering that meaty smell with their seasoning. I also got a chicken kabab sandwich and it was delicious, with a hint of garlic sauce, pickled raddish, tomatoes and lettuce. Chicken was very flavourful! And we ordered a side of baba ganouj and it' s the first time I've tasted baba ganouj with tomatoes, bell peppers and parsley and lemon. Very easy to eat and scoup it up with your pita bread! The owners gave us a free side of hummus, as well as free baklava. Their hummus was smooth and creamy and definitely home made. Their BAKLAVA however, this is a winner for them!!!
