I was in DC (Old Town) for a meeting and walked by Maman a few times but didn't have an opportunity to go in. Luckily, the meeting I was at had several boxes of pastries delivered from the bakery, so I was able to write this review. I did stop by this morning to take a few pictures and ordered a latte. Maman opened in December of last year; there are over a dozen in NYC, and seven in DC. I didn't realize it was a chain until I read the history. There were several boxes of pastries still left untouched at the end of the meeting so I took the one which was labeled 'Croissants'. There were 4 different croissants in the box: Plain Pain au Chocolate Chocolate Almond Everything Croissant Of course, I started with the Plain - it was very good. It had all the accoutrements you would expect - golden brown exterior and an airy, honeycomb looking inside. The outer crust crumbled delicately with a crunchy bite - perfect texture and taste with an underlying subtle butter flavor. It's everything you would expect a good croissant to be. Unfortunately, it was downhill from there. Next up, the Pain au Chocolat, or the chocolate croissant. I bit into one and had it had the same delicious pastry shell, but it seemed like it needed more chocolate. I cut it in half, see attached - it's a little unusual looking, and you'll see why I felt it 'needed more chocolate'. The Everything Croissant was next - I didn't know what it was when I opened the box. I had a bite and didn't like the taste, and wasn't able to identify the spice(s) - it had such a strong taste. When I visited the store, I saw the name and asked what was on it. I was told it has the topping of an 'everything bagel' - poppy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic, onion and salt. I suppose there are people who like that topping on their croissant, I prefer it on a bagel. I thought I was saving the best for last with the Chocolate Almond Croissant - it was actually the opposite - it was last, but definitely not the best. In fact, it was not edible. See the attached picture - it probably doesn't truly reflect the interior is close to uncooked dough - it might be the most uncooked pastry I've ever had. It was the bitter end to a wonderful beginning. There were several other boxes with many other pasties and cookies, which I did not have. To be fair, those other pasties and cookies may be worth a try. However, in the croissant section, stick with the plain, you can't go wrong. PS I had a latte which was very good. read more

Love this location and they participate with the inKind app. The upstairs is always open in the mornings before my big meetings in old town. I at least have about an hour window to work in peace before the morning rush. Try the cortado (it's a double espresso with coconut milk). The sandwich cookie, cinnamon bun, Nutella brownie, croissant waffle, Wilde smoked salmon or chicken salad are all winners and my top picks. I absolutely love Maman, and recently I saw a TikTok creator post about their Iced Banana Pudding Matcha Latte. As someone who enjoys most of their seasonal drinks, I knew I had to give this one a try--and let me just say, it was a 1,000/10! The service was amazing as well! I got the glazed apple fritter iced matcha latte with apple cider cinnamon cloud and iced vanilla honeybutter latte with a sweet corn cloud foam. 1) do you see how much of the cup they filled and how there is no cold foam AT ALL ON BOTH DRINKS? 2) WHY ADVERTISE FLAVORS THAT SOUND AMAZING, but taste nothing like it. I wanted to love the "apple fritter" and I wanted so badly to have corn in my latte. I tasted nothing of that from both drinks. 3) why did my sandwich taste super limey? It was supposed to be avocado, egg, candied bacon, tomatoes and onions. It tasted like they put 5 limes in the avocado mash.. the candied bacon was great, but i ate just the protein and trashed the sandwich. For $14 it was 0/10. Drinks were so disappointing and expensive I don't get how restaurants can charge almost $10 a cup, not fill the cup and then not give the drink it's proper round of applause. Food is ok, the pastries and salads are the best in my opinion. The service is pretty bad. We always have to clean our own table and today we were told by the cashier to get our napkins from upstairs to clean our table although there was a huge stack behind them. We also had to go hunt for our food and coffee although we were told they would bring it to our table and given a table number. We will go elsewhere, it's just not worth it. Stopped by this morning to try Maman food in an actual cafe. I'd previously tried their treats, including chocolate chip cookies, through delivery and the stand in NYC. Very happy that Maman has opened up in the old Foxtrot space. The space is lovely - bright and relatively large considering the location. They're lucky to have a decent second level that's airy and bright. The first floor is where you order - and they have seating that sits facing the street so you can people watch on King. They have a great selection of baked goods. I tried the Kouign Maman (nice play on words for a Kouign Amman). It's a decent version - caramelized, not overly sweet, and flakey. It's pretty large and you may want to share with someone. For breakfast, I tried the Papa bowl. I really liked the sauce on this which is slightly spicey - definitely needed against the sweet candied bacon. Cons: you get one egg and a little bacon over a mountain of potatoes. This would be a great dish if it had half the potatoes and one more egg. I also had the fresh grapefruit juice which was delicious and every bit worth the $7. Service was nice and friendly. I will absolutely be back to maman! The interior is beautifully decorated, and I loved the loft seating area upstairs. The pastries were delicious! What am amazing authentic brunch experience!! My best friend and I came for brunch and sat at the bar. Our original reservation was for patio. However, the bar seating allowed us to get more from the experience given you get to see the fire area. All I can say is the food is delicious, although I could be biased given this cuisine is one of my favorites. The meats were tender, the various dips/ spread were insanely flavorful - not to mention the amount of food was more than enough for the two of us. There's a per person charge so keep that in mind! Maman, Mum, Mom, This is a great looking cafe in Old Town with lots of delicious drink and pastry options. I ordered a salad, sandwich, and drink for pickup. When I arrived, the lower-level is so enticing with a pastry case of baked goods. My order was not ready at the pickup station. It took several minutes for the staff to locate my order. I ordered the Martha's chicken salad sandwich and Martha, this was a disappointment. The toasted bread was very dry and the chicken salad was tasteless. The salad was okay. They did not pack any utensils for the salad, nor napkins, so this was quite a messy endeavor. I had to hunt down some utensils at the meeting room I was in. It was light and fluffy and full of delicious, fresh berries and cream. I'm still thinking about it. I'm also a huge matcha fan and enjoyed the blueberry lavender iced matcha latte. There was a good balance of matcha and lavender with the perfect amount of sweetness from the berries. It is pretty packed inside and hard to find seating so I think I'll get it to go next time. They were just putting them out so the chocolate was melted on the inside. The cinnamon bun was served cold. I took it to go. The lavender hot chocolate was dreamy. This chain brands itself as your local French cafe and maybe they're committing to the but by having rude and dismissive waitstaff? Not sure. There was a younger woman with long hair and a nose piercing (I didn't catch her name) that took our order who kind of just acting like we were wasting her time and it wasn't even the morning rush! My friend and I both ordered signature lattes (the caramel and fleur de sel) and they were delicious! I would come back for the latte, but take it to go. I got a cinnamon pastry and my friend got the blueberry scone. They were both good, but not great. The space is beautiful and, generally, tranquil. The real reason I'm giving this place 3 stars instead of 5 is the service. It seems to match some of the other reviews, but the waitstaff were just so incredibly rude. They acted like we were doing them a favor by dining here. Not the best way to garner a following among OT locals, but we shall see how they fare! Food is as good as any other Maman in DC. Review comes after the poor service received. At the Georgetown Maman, you are sat by a hostess and orders are taken by waiters at the table. At this location, you have to seat yourself and order your food downstairs, and make sure no one takes your seat while you are ordering. I sat at a table barely big enough for my party and only required an extra seat. We noticed another party just pull up a whole other table for their party without asking the waiters. I asked a server if it was ok to take another seat from another table for our friend (we already ordered and just needed an extra seat) and all she could say was "I don't know", "Other people need to sit too". I understand that, but if another party of the same size of mine is able to pull a whole table without the waitress mentioning anything--then why was the response different when I asked. Besides the poor service there was one inconsistency with our meal. The hot chocolates pictured are two different sizes but charged the same size. On TU, 07/07 my family were visiting our son who lives in Tacoma neighborhood in D.C. and visited one of our favorite areas Old Town Alexandria, VA. While walking down King St. we found your Maman Cafe which we didn't remember being here a year ago. We ordered 2 sandwiches: a turkey and bacon and chicken basil on soft bread. Both were simply DIVINE. We have a new favorite restaurant in Old Town since "Bitter Sweet" left several years ago. The quality of food, the flavor together with the ambience and the lovely staff (particularly a Black young woman who made sure our table was cleaned) all made this place a must-go any time we visit the D.C. area in the future! Pretty atmosphere. I got the papa breakfast bowl and hazelnut latte. Wasn't the best presentation but it was good. It was a large portion and I loved that the potatoes were crispy. The hazelnut was good as well, just a little thick. The service was ok, I noticed that my food and drink were not presented to me the same way as other patrons (didn't speak or look at me all) but that's fine. Recently visited the Old Town location during a weekday for lunch around 11 am. It is in the old Foxtrot location with two levels and much smaller than other Mamans in the area. Very busy for lunch - you place your order downstairs and then there is open bar seating downstairs and open seating upstairs. The seating filled up pretty quickly but by the time our order was filled there were other patrons living and we were able to be seated. The seating is really close but otherwise the upstairs seating is cozy with a side view of King Street. I ordered the Martha pomegranate punch and the Mediterranean bowl both which were delicious. The bowl was fresh and light with good flavor. The punch I believe is limited edition for the winter. The staff did come around upstairs to clear dishes and ask if we needed anything (as well as bringing your order if you decide to sit inside). Had an unusual and unfortunate experience here on New Year's Day. After placing our order with the cashier and preparing to pay, the cashier informed us that there was no seating available, and therefore the order must be prepared to go. We were looking forward to dining in, so we asked her if we could simply wait for a table. She replied that there was not enough room for parties to wait for seating to become available. I don't think I have ever been to a restaurant where I was told I could not elect to wait for a table to become available. I wish she had told us upfront before we placed the order, and she also offered no apology. We canceled our order, stepped out of line, and debated our options. We decided that we would take the order to go after all, so I got back into the end of the line, waited, and when I reached her again, she offered me the option of dining in or taking out and did not offer any explanation as to now why 10 minutes later the rules had changed. Also, I did not hear her inform any other party before or after me in line the first time that they had to take their order to go. We were only a party of 2, not like we needed a big table. They were also incredibly understaffed on this particular day. Our table was never wiped down, and they ran out of silverware. I don't blame the staff, I think they were doing the best they could, but they were set up for failure by being so short staffed. The food was wonderful, the ambience is inviting, but the flow and the service leaves much to be desired, and I will not hurry back. As an aside, I do not understand why cafés like this one and Tatte allow parties to set up laptops and essentially use the space as an office for hours a day. Other cafés in DC avoid this by placing signage at the cash register, and not offering Wi-Fi. There were parties on either side of our table who were there before we sat down, and were there after we left because they were all working on laptops. This does a disservice to customers trying to dine in. read more
