I really enjoyed popping into this restaurant as I've been really curious of these and now I finally had the opportunity to try them out. I really thought they were mainly just coffee and pastries but I was wrong. I wish I would have took a picture of the menu because they had soups, sandwiches, pastries, coffee, other food items available. I was really surprised as I just had came from across the street since it was so cold I wanted something to warm me up. So I really didn't know what I wanted to try so I just decided on a latte and pistachio croissant which I have gotten 2-of those croissants because they were so good and delicious! The coffee was a little basic so nothing to run home to tell mama about but it was warmed me up. Very nice inside plenty of seeing for if you want to enjoy your food inside. The service could use some work as I told her I really didn't know what I should get. She could have at least gave me some suggestions but oh well. This place used to be good. Now, if I could give it 1/2 star I would. The customer service is terrible. No one is clearing the tables. The orange juice is Floridas Natural from a carton. My husband had to ask someone for a fork with his quiche--and then a worker had to go search in the back to find him one. La Madeleine is a beautiful French bakery with a charming and inviting atmosphere. The service was very good, friendly and attentive. However, the food itself was not amazing. The pastries were not heated up when served. Even after requesting them to be warmed, they still were not heated properly, which took away from the overall experience. On a positive note, the hot chocolate was good and comforting. Overall, it's a lovely place to sit and enjoy the ambiance, but I do wish there was more attention to detail when it comes to serving the food as expected. read more

Every time I visit Old Town and staying for a few days I always eats breakfast at La Madeline. Food is very good, healthy euro style. Staff appears to mostly older people who care what they present, not the usual hipsters with an attitude who throw it at you. Only negative (not a game changer) they changed the interior to be more "modern", to attract the ring through the nose crowd ? I miss the old French cafe motif. I've enjoyed every La Madeleine location I've visited, and I recently visited the one in Old Town Alexandria again and really enjoyed it! The Old Town location is warm, welcoming, and spacious! I visited on the morning of Alexandria's annual Scottish Christmas Parade, so it was really crowded as the restaurant is right outside the parade route. Seating was still available, as this place has ample seating. My favorite things to order at La Madeleine are their delicious and famous tomato soup (so good!) and their Linzer cookie. Our table ordered the following when I visited recently: -Avocado Toast -Tomato soup -French country breakfast (this is a hearty meal!) -coffee This is a fast casual place and you order at the counter and they bring your food out to you. Silverware is located in little cups at the front, and it's basically a no frills place. Prices are super reasonable, and the food has always been fresh and delicious whenever I've visited. I love this La Madeleine! It's my favorite location. The staff is friendly and do their best. It is a busy place in Old Town! Especially during breakfast and lunch when I've been. I always get the chicken friand and the tomato soup. The epic tomato soup is warm, cheesy, thick, and delicious! The chicken friand is crispy and that mushroom sauce is to die for yummy! I love the French bakery feel and the cute French farm-style decor. There is a big parking lot nearby so that went well. Used to love coming here with my fiancée, but the ambiance declined majorly since their new remodel. The warm, intimate, cozy vibe has been replaced and has cooled significantly. When we first walked in, my fiancée exclaimed, "I feel like I am in an IHOP!" The tone has become very generic, and the charm is gone - which is a shame, because everything has the feel of an Apple Store nowadays. A great spot for a casual meal in Old Town Alexandria! The set-up is great, as you can place your order, and then will receive a number, for the server to bring your food to you. Everyone who works at la Madeleine is friendly and helpful. My husband and I ordered the seasonal kale & quinoa salad, which had marinated cherry tomatoes, Kalamata olives & artichoke hearts, green onions, feta in massaged kale & quinoa. Delicious, and I love the salad dressing! We also ordered the french dip hot sandwich. It's basically roast beef with caramelized onions, provolone & horseradish sauce baked on a baguette :) Yumm! We were able to add a side, and got the pasta salad. The prices here are also very reasonable for Old Town Alexandria! Highly recommend coming here if you're okay with not overly fancy.
