I had a first visit here today while I was on a walk and decided to stop in. I ordered a seasonal pumpkin spice latte. It tasted more like a regular latte in my opinion. I also decided to order the veggie quiche, which came with a side salad and quinoa. To my surprise when I got home, there was a very small slice of quiche and mostly salad. Needless to say, I won't order quiche from here again. The service was friendly and fairly quick. However it seemed like the more popular choice were the breakfast sandwiches. read more

I like this busy 2 level coffee shop. I stop in every time I'm getting my vehicle serviced or planning to buy supplies from Trek. The coffee drinks, sandwiches & baked goods are customizable and good. The staff is cool too. It tends to be loud inside so I normally place a to go order especially if I have to make phone calls. Additionally, the upstairs has tables & chairs but it tends to stay full with folks working on their laptops. read more

Popped in the other day when I was at Great Harvest Bread Co -- shocked to find a 2nd loc! I've gone to St Elmo's in Del Ray for years. It won't knock your socks off, but it's pretty good coffee. I got an iced decaf skinny latte. Not bad. The ambiance is way better in the DR location. This loc -- off Fern - is kind of utilitarian. I'm sure the neighbors are thrilled to have them! read more

I've been coming here for several years. Good food, normally good service, but not today. Should be 0 stars for customer service. Horrible customer service! I ordered multiple items to go. I got all items except one item. I waited and waited and waited. Finally I tried to ask multiple people and was ignored. Finally one person responded. When I asked about the item, she immediately seemed annoyed and asked if I had wanted it warmed up. I told her no. She went over to get the item and came back and said it was sold out. I then said I wanted a refund and she seemed even more annoyed. Instead of apologizing, telling me to come right to the cash register she didn't say anything and proceeded to work on other orders. I had to stand in line and the woman finally waited on me. She had to look up my order on the cash register. They asked if a cash refund was fine, instead of a credit on my card which was original payment. I said that was fine. They handed me $4 for a $3.99 item. When I asked what about the tax, she really got annoyed. The other worker handed me another $1 and I said wouldn't that be too much of a refund. The annoyed worker said they don't take cash (which is a lie) and they were giving me their own money. She acted like she was doing me a favor. Then she claimed they were short staff, so I said where is that my problem when I didn't get the item I ordered and paid for and she seemed annoyed I wanted a refund. The one worker acted like I was to blame for my item being forgotten and then sold out and wanting a refund. read more

It's nice to have a neighborhood coffee spot. It's cute inside and it always seems to have enough seating. That said, the coffee I had around lunchtime tasted old and the pastry tasted like the freezer. I figured the pastry would be fresh, and that's possible, but it didn't taste that way. During the week, people use this like a library or work space. In my experience, you will definitely get some side-eye from people not wearing headphones if you talk to a friend or have a meeting there. That's my personal pet peeve with a lot of coffee shops, but that's not uncommon. read more

This is one of my go-to in Alexandria for their lavender lattes, with almond milk. Base price for a 12 oz latte $3.89, 16 oz $4.89...also, when a latte taste good with almond milk (because for me that's the worst flavored non dairy milk) sans sweetener (and this is all I used to drink), you know you have a winner! For $6.96, you get a 16 oz lavender almond milk latte (0.79 for almond milk, 0.80 for lavender). This shop makes their own lavender syrup. I don't know how much more premium you can get. I should have done a review for this local VA favorite before I reviewed Dallas lattes... Lattes are inherently pricey and for more than two decades now, I often splurge or waste my money on it, having been brought up to 'live within my means' and save more. And so, in addition to flavor, I will always judge a latte by price as well to perhaps help me justify spending on it. The DMV has a high cost of living compared to Texas which is why I do not understand latte pricing in Dallas - there is no way your shop rental and labor cost will exceed the Northeast, nor the west coast for that matter. Your sales tax is slightly higher but everything else should be lower. But maybe your property tax could be a factor- don't know but don't really care. read more

I like St Elmo's but I don't LOVE St Elmo's... for different reasons. Service is already great. Ran by the younger generation but they've always been sweet, kind, and accommodating. Some pay better attention than others but it's a part of growing. For instance, I've asked for an iced drink on separate occasions but they always seem to miss when I say iced... I thought it was me at first but it was different people so I don't think it's me. I also like to get iced so I can see that I am getting my full volume of drink. See attached photo- missing a whole inch of latte whenever I order a hot drink. I always instantly feel it in the weight. Food is ok. Poptarts are ok. They always look so good waiting in line but don't really pop or standout to me after I eat them. Croissants are always good. Bagels are good. I tend to always get their sausage, egg and spinach wrap but what I hate is that spinach releases so much moisture so it gets soggy towards the end of eating it. The egg is boiled and not scrambled, something that always take me off guard but it's alright. Coffee is ok. Seasonal drinks tend to be a hit or miss. I had their autumn spice latte. Just tasted like a latte with some cinnamon and spice. It isn't as "blended" as I'd think it'd be. Toasted marshmallow latte tastes like a regular latte. Nothing special here. Surprisingly I really like their matcha latte with a pump of simple syrup. They do that really well here. Overall I give a 3/5. It can get loud depending on the day. It's well lit with ample seating. They do close early, so don't come here if you want an evening coffee or night cap. read more

I came here with my GF and we both got vanilla latte's (her's hot and mine iced), and she got a muffin while I opted for a homemade pop tart. Drinks were beyond awful. The lack of quality was very very apparent. My "lemonade" if you could call it that, obviously consisted of concentrated lemon juice and concentrated "berry" syrup. We love the breakfast burrito, the one here seemed a little bland, but with pepper & hot sauce it was still good. I was in the area and needed a place to study. If I study at home, laundry and the dishes have never seemed so enticing! I was so excited to see plenty of street parking - I live in DC - and plenty of space inside. There is a wide open and inviting front entrance with high top tables and regular lower tops. Plus, lots of seating in their upstairs space. Bar like seating, high tops, regular tables and a long community table that seats 6. Lots of outlets with USB connections as well. I ordered the fall seasonal spice latte that has honey and some spices in it. I enjoyed it. Not my favorite seasonal but enjoyable. They have a few other seasonals plus your regular coffee and tea selection. They have baked goods and a menu of regular food items as well. Service was fast and friendly. I'm almost reluctant to post a review because I love the St. Elmo's in Del Rey and this one is much newer, ergo wayyyyy less crowded. Cool downstairs and upstairs, and has a to go window. Free wifi. A few seats with outlets at least. A smaller food menu than Del Rey (for now at least) but what they have is great! read more

I come to St. Elmo's more than I should for my own good. Usually it's for studying and/or doing work but I also have a good laugh and strike up conversations with the patrons. The service is excellent and the staff really do a great job to make you feel at home. Even at times when I just want time to myself, I feel compelled to say hi to everyone when I arrive or order. As for the ambience, it changes depending on the hour, but nothing that noise cancelling headphones can't fix when it's real busy. Overall I think the best part of this place is the camaraderie and the teammates that make this place special. Oh and the bagels are good too ;) read more

I got a hazelnut coffee from here yesterday! it was so goood! it was exactly what I wanted and needed! the service here was great. First, the food and the service are very good. My chai latte smoothie was excellent. But the ambiance and atmosphere...the staff makes it impossible to like the place. The staff plays music so loudly that people sitting across tables from one another have to shout to make themselves heard during conversation. Read the room, guys. Of the eight people who where upstairs enjoying their beverages when I arrived, all of them were on laptops working, either individually or collaboratively. In the space of 30 minutes, six of them left, at least three pointing to their ears indicating that the noise was too much for them. It's a shame, because the space and the food are really nice, and I'd like to be a regular, but at this point I'm not coming back because the atmosphere is so unpleasant...and it doesn't have to be. read more

Ordered the breakfast burrito containing turkey sausage, spinach, red peppers, and eggs. It tasted as bland as a piece of paper. The strawberry banana smoothie potentially had Parmesan cheese mixed into it or the fruits were contaminated by raw onion. Either way, obviously not worth the $4.99 I paid for. The ambiance is decent but could definitely use some type of upbeat lo-fi music. The employees were nice, however they did seem uneducated on the muffins - especially the brand new pumpkin one. I had no idea the new St. Elmo's location was as close as it is. They have two floors which is more than enough space if you need to get away from the house a bit to get some work done. Or as I like to call it, " working away from home." I kept my order pretty simple the day I chose to visit and ordered. I ordered their Veggie Quiche which I cannot seem to stop ordering, no matter what St. Elmo's location I visit (not pictured), and the seasonal Pumpkin Spice Latte. So excited to have a local coffee shop on this part of town. I can finally step out for coffee made by someone else other than Starsucks (ugh)! That said, hoping this St. Elmo's location can tighten up overall customer experience so they can thrive in their new location. I've been twice so far and each time they served my coffee but forgot about the pastry I ordered. Both times I had to go up to the counter and interrupt their next customer's order so they can get my scone warmed up and ready to go. Also, the sandwich-making situation takes time and there's no getting around it. If there are hella food orders, a simple, "It's going to be a 10-15 minute wait...is that okay?" goes a long way. At least then a customer can knowingly make a decision to stay for their food order or go without (especially if in a rush). Simple fixes like these are easily going to make St. Elmo's the best coffee shop option in 3 mile radius! We need more places like this - less places like Starsucks. read more

In terms of surroundings, this is the antithesis of the original St Elmo's. It's all hard surfaces and sharp edges. Metal chairs and stools, ceramic tile floors downstairs, faux hardwood upstairs. No more recycled Salvation Army furniture. It's a bright "clean, well lighted place." Counter Culture coffee in a variety of blends is already brewed. A small, but decent selection of pastries. Real bagels, not the "Southern" Sarah Lee imitations. What I found lacking was: no air circulating upstairs. Uncomfortable already at 8:30 AM. The solo ceiling fan over the lobby entrance was accomplishing nothing. A real bagel shop (no, they're not claiming to be one) would serve your bagel "mit der shmear" already applied, not in a little container with a plastic knife. And "dine in" pastries should be served on at least a paper plate. Using your paper bag as a placemat is just a clear signal that management cares more about efficiency than anything else. The staff was cheerful, quick, and informative. read more

It's a beautiful space for a coffee shop. The service was fine. Too bad the coffee is so bad. They burned and even boiled my milk as I watched. I felt like I was an eyewitness to a culinary crime. I was desperate for caffeine, but I could only choke down a few sips before I gave up feeling defeated and frustrated. Don't blame the young baristas.
