I wish I could give Mama Chus a 5-star rating but for the sake of fairness I just can't do it. There are many positives about Mama Chus and maybe just a few negatives that keep it from getting the coveted 5-star rating. First. In my dozens of times eating here the service has always been great. There is always someone there to seat you quickly which is nice. The wait staff is quite good at refilling your drink orders and the food comes out quickly. Even on busy days they are quite prompt. Second. I really like there chips and salsa. The chips come out warm and the salsa is fresh. It is fairy chunky salsa and the heat varies. (Which some might see as a negative and inconsistency.) Some days I would peg the salsa at a medium. Other days it is hotter than satans you know what. I like hot, but many friends have complained about the hotness of the salsa. Third. The portions are large and filling. Not to mention that the prices are great. I have yet to find a sit down Mexican restaurant with better prices. I love that I can get my fill of chips and salsa followed with some delicious chicken enchiladas or carne asada burrito and a coke for $10. If you are looking for an upscale dine-in Mexican restaurant this is not the place. If you are looking for big portions and a quick meal come and try it for yourself. The food is ok but not the best. I do love the crispy beef tacos and I don't know why but the Coke tastes so good. The chips and salsa are just ok. Our salsa wasn't very spicy at all. It was more of just a tomato taste. I'm not a fan of the enchiladas. The shredded beef is tender and seasoned well. Most of the workers have been here for a long time. They are good at their jobs but they get busy and often times overlook checking on you. We had to ask three different people for more salsa. Be sure to grab a free sucker on your way out. Came here for the first time and it's hard to say whether it's 4 or 5 stars but i'll go with 4. Between price, quality, and quantity they do very well with the price for the quantity. The rice and beans tasted like they were made fresh and it's a lot of food for the price. The only thing wrong is the quality of everything other than the beans and rice. The specials are cheap, and always worth ordering; I really love the taco salad and the chicken enchiladas. They are sometimes stingy about substituting a soft drink for juice, even though they are the same price. We have eaten here several times so when we had an activity planned up the canyon we stopped for lunch on the way. As we were waiting for our food, my granddaughter noticed a small red bug on the table, she smashed it with her napkin and we didn't think too much of it. Then when ant number one and ant number two were found crawling on the same area of the table we talked to our server. She said she couldn't do anything about it. I asked to have the manager sent over to our table. We showed him the three smashed bugs and he said it was because "we" the customers opened the door and came in and out of the door. Mama Chus is an interesting little place that I visit fairly often. The location is a little rundown, but kept clean, and the staff are always friendly and notably efficient! Upon arrival we must walk hurriedly to follow the host/hostess to a table. As many little Mexican joints do, they lay out chips and salsa on the table for you while you review the menu. The chips are pretty plain, but it is good salsa. I like the chimichungas, and the enchiladas. When the menu says 'tosta grande' that is actually a warning--it's good, but very, very grande. My last visit I ordered a Chile Verde Buritto, and it was a wee bit spicey! Really! In Utah Valley I actually managed to order something hotter than black pepper. Not a lot hotter, but I was well pleased. The fried ice cream is usually pretty good too. While it's not the best food around, it's high quality for the price. I like it. read more

Your dollar does go a long way here, but I'd prefer to pay more for, well, more. I got a daily lunch special at a killer price, then regretted it. It was the taco salad and the server literally brought it out to me 30 seconds after ordering. Really? This means the daily specials are pre-made and sitting in the back waiting for the lunch rush, or someone else ordered it before me, then changed their minds and the restaurant didn't want to waste a perfectly good taco salad. Either way, the risk is that I'm getting something akin to a fast food joint--something that's been sitting in the back getting cold. So was it cold? Sadly, yes. The chicken was overdone, tough, bland, and cold. The beans were good but cold. The guac was fine. The taco shell itself was okay, the portions were a lot smaller than I'm used to (which is okay . . . it's healthier at any rate), again the price is good. But I'd much rather pay more and wait longer for hot food. I'm not coming to places like this thinking I'm getting fast food. In fact, I want to sit down. I want to be served. I want to take my time. I am always looking for good Mexican places in Utah and they are really hard to find. Our office recently moved close to Mama Chus and it is a great lunch spot! It's a small little hole-in-the-wall right at the mouth of Provo Canyon. The staff is friendly and the place is clean and simple. They get really busy at lunch because they have cheap lunch specials every day and their service is quick. Considering the source, their food is great. I really liked the chips and salsa. So far I've only had the chimichanga which is their Friday special and it was great and a good portion for lunch. The Horchata is also delicious if you like it more on the cinnamon side. All around one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been to in Utah Valley. It's perfect if you live or work nearby, but also worth the drive if you don't. read more

This little Mexican place is just down the road from my house, so I find myself going there frequently. The wait staff all knows me and greets me with a smile and a enthusiastic wave. They have given me free fried ice cream on a few occasions, on account of my being their "favorite customer"...maybe I go there too often... But who can blame me? The service is usually amazingly quick, the food is always delicious, and the price is very affordable. Called in orders are almost always ready in 5 minutes. I can't even get there in 5 minutes. My favorites are the chicken chimi, the beef and bean tostada (or the tostada grande, on days when I want to gorge myself), and the chicken enchiladas. Worst Mexican food I've ever tasted. Salsa tasted like canned tomatoes mixed with a few small pieces of green pepper. That should have been my first sign. I ordered a carne asada meal with beans, rice, and flour tortillas. Steak was fatty and chewy. There was sauce covering the whole plate - and was really bland. Beans and rice were decent but there was hardly any in my meal. Lastly, the flour tortillas tasted like the cheap ones you buy from the store on a last minute grocery run. Been here three or four times with friends who love it. It's okay. There's nothing totally offensive about it, but nothing that stellar either. The food is cheaper than a lot of the sit-down Mexican places around here (Los Hermanos, for example), but it also tends to be kind of bland and forgettable. Had the carnitas michoacanas and while they didn't skimp on the guacamole and sour cream which was appreciated, the carnitas itself was tough. I have driven past Mama Chus for years and finally decided to give it a try. I ordered the #15 carne Asada burrito with rice and beans. The burrito was pretty good. Covered in a green sauce and filled with onions and steak. The beans were on the runny side but still had really good flavor to them. The rice was fairly bland on its own, but worked well with everything else. I would probably give the food 3 star, but the price and customer service was 5.
