Been coming here off and on for years! My bf and I revisited after 3.5 years so it was nice to be back. I remember even eating here growing up. Maltby Cafe is a gem! The cafe is located downstairs in the basement. During the olden days, it was a school house! Now the upstairs is a gym/basketball court. It's quite popular on the weekends! Saturdays are relatively a bit better than Sundays to come through. Expect to wait and people waiting. They sell honey, merch like t-shirts and sweaters, special seasoning and their famous enormous cinnamon rolls! Their menu encompasses breakfast favorites, omelettes and scrambles, along with pancakes, French toast and waffles. Some establishments serve pancakes with the entrees and saw that pancakes weren't an option, even a side! But since you get a lot of food already, it's understandable why pancakes wouldn't be included. My bf and I got the special! Since it's Easter tomorrow, we got the Easter Benedict! Holy moly -- this was a HIT! ** PLEASE make this again, it was delicious!!!** I got mine with the honey country ham while my bf had bacon. They were not skimpy on the meat, it was thick cut and generous. It had scrambled eggs on top with the most delicious amazing hollandaise sauce EVER! It also has tender asparagus at the bottom and the most AMAZING cornbread I've ever had!!! It came with country potatoes. Overall, this dish was DELICIOUS and DEFINITELY worth having again!!!! I got a side of biscuits and gravy. While the pepper gravy was good, I should've requested sausage gravy as that it so much more flavorful! My parents loved their omelettes. This place is everything you want and expect out of locally owned, cozy diner- huge portions, friendly staff and a menu with so many options you change your mind multiple times before you order. I had the biscuits and gravy and my husband had the roughneck and both were good. We also ordered an Americano and a iced latte and the coffees were pretty decent. There was nothing that stood out on the menu to me as exceptionally noteworthy but there were a lot of solid options. The restaurant is downstairs and is very comforting and cozy, it reminded me of my grandmas kitchen. It definitely feels like a place locals frequent. We went on a Friday morning and had to wait for a table, but waited no more than 15 minutes. If you are in the area and looking for comfort food, this a great option. read more

Lots of hype around this business so we finally decided to try it for ourselves. I know many people swear by this place, but let me give you my honest perspective. Food: There is nothing spectacular here unless you count the gigantic cinnamon rolls, which are quite delicious served warm at the table with so much icing it practically runs onto the table. The burger was very good and huge. Curry chicken was also a winner with lots of veggies, chicken in tasty curry sauce. Service: There was a waitlist upon arrival which did move rather quickly for the number of people already seated and a couple dozen waiting for a table. I am guessing that it is always busy so you may not see a server immediately. However, the service is quite friendly and not rushed by the seeming high energy of the restaurant. Heidi took time to listen carefully to our specific requests and delivered with grace and caring. Ambiance: I did mention the place was completely full, so the noise level was a bit daunting and I was glad when we left. Too much audio stimulation from people talking extra loudly just to be heard by others sitting right next to them. Overall, I would say this is an experience where you find large portions and a nice array of comfort type dishes. You should at least go once and see for yourself what the hype is all about. Maltby Cafe is a never miss for me (when I actually can go and the wait isn't 1 hr+). I swear everyone who works here drinks happy juice and is so pleasant and kind. This time my daughter got the pancakes for the kids menu which came shaped as a bear with chocolate chip eyes which was adorable and delicious. My husband and I split the Montana potatoes (he added a side of gravy for the biscuit) which was enough for us to each have breakfast and leftovers for the next day. Very uneven. The Malby beef dip and potato salad was delicious. Very interesting potato salad with celery, red onion and dill. Yummy. My turkey wrap was fine, though i couldn't find the lettuce on it. The "fries " however were not edible. Extremely greasy, unevenly cooked. How could anyone eat these? Although I've gotten the cinnamon rolls before, I don't think I'd properly dined in before. The cafe is located in the basement, and there's a parking lot conveniently located right outside. I came in a small group, and we got seated after a few minutes. The service was great from start to finish, and we were chatting with the servers while we were waiting for our table. I ordered the French toast, and it was so good. I loved the fresh berries and cream on top because of the extra boost of flavor. OMG! What took us so long to come to this place? Everything about this place is so very true. Food is fantastic! I had the chicken fried steak and it was actually a steak, not ground beef or hamburger. Husband had an omelet that he enjoyed. Portions were huge. Service was great. Wait staff was very friendly. Interesting that the restaurant is in the basement of the building. You have to walk down a flight of stairs. Not a big deal. I thought I saw an entrance for the disabled. Probably should call first if you need a handicap accessible entrance. We will definitely return when we have time to drive that far for a meal. read more

I went with a large group this morning again. We were unannounced and they took excellent care to seat us all as soon as possible. The staff and the service was excellent and cheerful. My low rating in this review is based solely on the quality of the food. The portions are very generous and they have a big selection of choices. I had a chicken fried steak and the sausage gravy was terrible. It had somewhat of a metallic taste that spoiled the whole meal. A friends who had biscuits and gravy said the same thing and suggested the gravy was "old". I can't, with good conscience recommend it at this time. I also noticed that the cafe is in a basement of an old building with a very low wood beamed ceiling with no visible fire retardant system. Since it is always crowded with obit two small and narrow exits that it's a serious fire hazard. This is simply my observation but it made me very uncomfortable. read more

First time at the cafe for breakfast. We went on a Friday morning around 9am and it was busy but there were several empty tables and didn't have to wait. Cafe is standard. It's still giving you massive amounts of fresh, delicious food for a very reasonable price which is a rarity these days. Always heard some raving reviews about Maltby Cafe. I have been wanting to try this place. We attempted it couple of times in the past, but every time we stopped there for breakfast - the wait time was long and we were in a hurry to be elsewhere. So we figured out that we can't be time bound if we want to try this place. When we finally made up our mind to face the wait time and made no other plans but to enjoy the breakfast from Maltby Cafe, we stopped by. To our surprise, we only had to wait for 3 mins before we got a table even though this place was packed. just wow! The whole set up of this place is mesmerizing. The restaurant is in basement - that was a surprise. Well decorated. It echoes the fact that this place has been up and running for over 30 years. Amazing ambiance. We got a great spot. We were helped by Bria that day. Started off with Coffee and Hot chocolate for kids. We ordered the Fruit filled Swedish Pancakes, French Toast, Baja Omelette and Jr Pancakes. We underestimated the portions - it's huge and usually one order is good for two! Baja omelette was served with potato fries and a biscuit. Jr Pancake came with a sausage on the side. Plenty of fruits with French Toast as well. We really enjoyed the food. Loved everything we ordered that day. Of course couldn't finish the pancakes and had to get a takeout box. Maltby Cafe is known for their cinnamon rolls as well. We ordered one for take out as well. It's 'huge' - we enjoyed that for a couple of days as well. What we heard about this place was true based on our experience. Food is very delicious, plenty of options to pick from. Service was so nice - all the staffs were welcoming and friendly. After decades of coming to Maltby Cafe, I'm honestly sad to write this. I always order the special off the whiteboard. Today, the special came out missing key advertised ingredients, and it was noticeably less than what I'm used to getting here. Over the years, I've watched the slow creep in prices and accepted it because the food quality and portions justified it. Today, they didn't. I also asked if the potatoes could be crispy and they weren't. On a positive note, it was nice meeting one of the owners on my birthday, and I genuinely wish them the best. Despite the cozy cafe waiting area being filled, the two of us were seated after ~15 minutes. The waitress was nice but forgot my tea. She wasn't back again until the food came out; the tea wasn't on the bill so it was fine. We split the special - cinnamon roll French toast - with a side of potatoes. The food was fine. Came here for Easter Sunday brunch and for no reservation for 5 we had a 30 minute wait (They take reservation for 6+). After ordering our food it's about a similar wait and while reading the reviews they have posted around the entrance it is worth a wait especially with how big the portions are. Except the Biscuits & Gravy were definitely on the smaller side for portions. The country fried potatoes that comes on the side with some of the dishes are so good!! I could just eat that!! I got the Maltby Bread French Toast and there was SO MUCH fruit!! As someone who likes to ratio the French Toast and fruit every bite I'll probably ask if they can put it on the side or less fruit. I was looking for my toast underneath it all. The Creme on the top was so good too!! I can eat the Creme with the toast just like that too!! So you can eat it with or without maple syrup too. I also got the hot chocolate and SO CREAMY!! The portions were so big but the cinnamon roll is bigger!! Had to take it to go. As someone who loves sweets this was a little less on the sweeter side for me but a perfect amount of sweetness if you don't eat lots of sweets. There is parking but depending what time you come it can get full. We got the last parking spot and went down to put our name on the list and when we came back up to wait in the car lots of spots opened up!! The food is fantastic. The service is excellent. The atmosphere is comfortable but loud on a busy morning. Be warned, we waited an hour for a table for 4 on the Saturday before Mothers' Day. It was, however, worth the wait. I had the California Scramble with eggs, avocado, green onions, crispy bacon bits, cheese and fresh tomato salsa. Okay breakfast, very large portions. Always a crowd out the door, but we showed up closer to noon for breakfast and we didn't have to wait very long for a seat at the counter. This was our first time going to this café. I will say the food was absolutely delicious, but the service sort of ruined the experience... We came during lunchtime, so of course it was busy, but once we got seated , our waitress pretty much ignored us and didn't come see our table for 20 minutes while the table next to us who got sat down after us had already gotten waters by the time she got to our table she said, are you ready to order and I looked at her and I said can we order drinks first? Then eventually, she brought out waters .. but that wasn't even the worst part. The worst part was when she dropped off the bill. My husband had already gotten his card out to give to her, and she immediately saw it and walked away.. She then walked past our table a second time where he again tried to pay. She then went to the same table that was seated after us to check in on them, and I literally had to practically yell excuse me and she just glared at me... and she said I will be right with you and took our check.. I don't know if it was just because they were busy or she was overwhelmed, but the service was not what I would've expected. a literal hidden spot in duvall ! a hidden little restaraunt you have to go downstairs into: like a little hidden world. a comfy, warm, cozy atmosphere. i revisited for the first time in years & it had a major renovation ! the coffee bar was amazing to look at, the seating was very spacious & comfortable, & the cozy cafe decor added to the pleasantry of the visit. everyone had welcomed us with a smile, multiple hellos & goodbyes, & asking if we needed anything. our waiter was the sweetest, & very passionate for her job. the food was AMAZING ! as soon as you step in the aroma of food & coffee has your stomach rumbling. i personally tried the eggs benedict, that was mouthwatering good: the best i have EVER tried. the hot cocoa was cutely decorated, & they even matched it to the season ! - which, an add on, they did have seasonal items ! We visited Maltby Cafe today and I was disappointed, although I still have the cinnamon roll I ordered to go to look forward to. I had read a number of impressive reviews so was looking forward to a special meal. We shared an order of Swedish pancakes stuffed with fresh fruit and had a side of bacon. The good news was the bacon was very good and had four large pieces. The bad news was the "Swedish" pancakes were not really Swedish pancakes but just regular pancakes folded in half with fruit. Real Swedish pancakes are similar to crepes, these were thick regular hot cakes. Don't know if someone made a mistake or if they just don't know how to make real Swedish pancakes. The other bad news was they were cold, not enough warmth to even melt the delicious flavored fruit flavor fraiche that comes with it. Very disappointed. I did not complain to waitress as she was very nice and they were quite busy and we didn't have time to let them try again. I plan to try again on my next trip to the area. read more
