MY FAVORITE restaurant in Malibu country mart! Honestly don't know why it took me so long to start coming here, but once I did, it instantly became one of my favorite spots! The cheddar melt burger is so tasty and you can tell the condiments that they put are all so fresh. I also enjoy the chicken burger here, and have found it hard to find a good chicken burger in the Malibu area. I would definitely suggest getting the falafel sandwich. It is so fresh and delicious and all the flavors work out so well. It is a very simple wrap, but it boasts of a lot of flavor and makes you want to just eat more! If you find yourself in the Malibu area and want a simple quick meal then I cannot suggest this place enough! You won't be disappointed! read more

From way back in the 70s, this place has had the best Falafel I've ever been able to find. I no longer live in California but I spent some time in Malibu back in 2001 and got to have one of these puppies. Still as yummy as I remember! And yes, like others have mentioned, what makes this falafel so damn good is that is isn't your typically traditional falafel. Malibu Mutt is the reason I still prefer yogurt sauce and cheddar cheese on my falafel to this day! Their pita bread is very good as well. Other reviewers already nicely summarized what this place is about -- a very bad, expensive burger place in a nice outdoor shopping center. I think we'd go there again if we are driving by there again (and if we must eat) because I like being able to sit with my dog and kids outside to eat. But, yes, this must be one of the worst dishes I had in my life. Where can I begin? The burger had absolutely no flavor, but it had so much thousand island dressing (it was very messy to eat). Now, the burger had a very generous portion of lettuce, onions, and tomatoes, so it's not like the store is trying to cut ingredients. The fries had absolutely no flavor, so I had to use serious amount of ketchup. My family asked how my food is, and I had to say -- well, it's a burger in Malibu, just to be polite and keep it positive! After all, all other restaurants in the shopping mall are rated low, except for one place that looked significantly more expensive! So, I have no complaint, but if the store people are reading this review, I would really recommend they put more salt on every burger and side dish (or maybe at least make another version in addition to the current unsalted dishes!). I'd give it a 3.5 stars, but I can't. Malibu is expensive so finding ANYTHING under $10 is tough. I heard the falafel sandwich was good here so I tried it. Not bad...smothered with sauce. A very overpriced place with flavorless food. Imagine a tiny shed with 2 windows in the middle of Cross Creek in Malibu. An order of fries was $7.00 for 8 pieces. The wrap was a slice or 2 of chewy turkey and some shredded cheese, a slice of tomato with LOTS of shredded lettuce and Mayo. Not sure if this was the worst falafel ever, I'm sure there are worse out there but i haven't had it. The sandwich was two pitas rolled up to wrap it like a burrito. The filling was mostly cabbage. I could only find what would amount to one falafel ball. Luckily I had asked for extra sauce, that came with an extra fee of .75 cents, because it would have been really bland. With all that cabbage it needed some kind of dressing. All this deliciousness (no sides, just a burrito shaped salad) for the bargain price of $8.67. read more

Malibu Mutt's Grill isn't the easiest place to find. Even if you are following your GPS, you still might miss the letters of the window that indicate you're in the right place and drive right past it. It took me a while, but after reading other Yelper's reviews I was determined to find the place. I'm kind of sorry I succeeded. I ordered a burger and fries. The burger was cooked completely through and was very dry. The steak fries were also nothing special. I was starving, and ate my fill, but when I was done I felt like I had paid too much for cafeteria food. So not impressed. I ordered the Falafel sandwich after reading good Yelp reviews. I am unhappy to report that for the first time I was let down. ;-( I ordered a falafel sandwich with an extra side of tahini because some reviewers reported they were light on the sauce. I was excited to see them frying up the falafel fresh after I ordered, and was getting excited. Then I waited, and waited, and waited. It wasn't busy at all, yet I waited and waited some more. I finally got my falafel! it seemed so big and plentiful, I hadmy extra tahini, I was ready to go! I opened the paper, took a big bite.....MEH! The first thing I noticed was how cold everything was. The pita was not warmed or toasted, it was cold. The tahini seemed like it was mixed with something, some sort of extender. It was gross and there was a whole lot of it, no need for the extra side. Cold Pita, a lot of lettuce covered in pseudo-tahini and very little falafel. i can not recommend this falafel to anyone. Ever. There are better places to eat at the country mart. Decen't burger spot (a burger shack really) in Malibu, across from Cros Creek shopping center. Burger, Fries + Coke costs a little over $10 (i think about $14) but you get a lot of food and it's pretty decent quality. Only a 3 starer because it's really nothing to crazy but still worth a shot. Searched Yelp for burgers and shakes after a hard day of digging holes and playing catch with the kids at the beach in Malibu and found this place. Walked up ordered a cheesebuger and grilled cheese for the kids, patty melt for me. When I tried to order shakes cashier said "no shakes." I asked, "no shakes ever?" he replied, "not on weekends too busy." There were definitely more people in the kitchen than were in line at 430 on a Saturday. So I ordered sodas for the kids and I and they rang me up for $34! A bit steep for the quality of the burgers. I needed at least another. When I pulled out my phone to double check on the picture of the the shake I saw on yelp the cashier said "ok, ok you want shake? What flavor?" Ridiculous. The shakes sucked. Vanilla. Tasted watery and flavorless. Fries were over cooked and tasted freezer burnt. My son wouldn't eat the grilled cheez because it was more like a toasted cheese with old grill grease flavor added. Unfortunately, I am lactose intolerant but they are able to substitute the tahini sauce with italian dressing and it is still unbelievable good! Fantastic - and I mean FANTASTIC - turkey burger here. I work in Malibu Country Mart and when I don't bring my lunch, this is one of the places I hit up. I get the turkey burger with cheese, ketchup, tomato, lettuce, and pickle and it is perfect EVERY single time. They have great fries, but I've stopped getting those, but they are great steak cut fries. I've also had the turkey melt which is yummy! But the turkey burger. It's perfection. They take credit cards now, just not American Express. Some people have complained about wait times. Keep in mind that in the summer, on the weekends, this area is crowded! One of my favorite weekend places! I love taking the kids to the Malibu Country Mart and hitting up the Malibu Mutt. We order our food, sit back and people watch. Then they run off and play for a bit. My favorite is the Garden Burger with Avocado and Raw Onion with Steak Fries! Yum! In fact, I'm long overdue for a trip to Malibu Mutt. It's about a 40 mile drive for me but it's worth it. I like to take a nice drive down the coast and end up at the Country Mart...grubbin' on a garden burger...people watching and then walk over to the beach and hang on the sand for a bit while watching the surfers catch some waves. We were hungry and everywhere else had really long lines, so we sucked it up. We ordered the falafel and veggie garden burger. Pretty standard and nothing bad. The tzatziki sauce was pretty bland. My daughter's burger came apart after a few bites. Counter service was fine except we were waiting a while for our order. We sat right in front of the stand and they never called our number. I finally went up and found our order had been sitting there. The other options are probably better but it's fine. I wouldn't get the falafel pita again. read more

Apparently the older Asian man who works the register does not know how to work his brand new credit card machine. I tried to order French fries, he ran my card incorrectly and said it wouldn't work. I went to check my account and printed out my summary showing I was charged and it was pending and already deducted my account. This place is 3 mins drive from my office. Order the garden burgers at this place or the falafel salad, you will know why there is always a line at this place :) Malibu has a lot of high end restaurants but I would still come back for the burgers here. I have ordered from here so many times that I know the owner by now and he seems like a really genuine and nice person. This place is right next to the park of this mall. The whole place has a very relaxed feel and makes for a great lunch place. The falafels are made fresh to order and oh so yum. If you want to keep it healthy, get the falafel salad that comes with a side of tahini sauce. The garden burger comes in a whole wheat bun. Yes, healthy too. I like the homemade thousand island dressing that is used instead of cheese. So, definitely healthy in that too. There is a lot of parking around the mall or in the back lot. based solely on its simplicity and the dichotomy it holds compared to its surroundings, i like this place. in the middle of this trendy star studded country mart playing the part of a simple town square in an otherwise opulent and lavish malibu community sits this burger stand. ok, maybe burger stand is simplifying it a bit. they have a slew of burgers, chicken sandwiches, melts, falafels and even chicken teriyaki dishes. but nothing fancy. no "blackened on a bed of" this. no "roasted with balsamic vinegar" that. and absolutely no goat cheese to be found anywhere. it's just simple, hearty, hot and juicy stuff. are these the best hamburgers in the world? no, nor do they claim to be. but it's all made fresh to order with crisp lettuce, thick slices of tomatoes and onions on a whole wheat bun (this is malibu after all). the burger looks perfect and is crafted together nicely unlike any other greasy spoon that just slaps stuff unevenly on a bun. all held together with a wooden spear through the middle so it won't fall apart as you dodge little pomeranians with versace collars on your way to a table. i like their french (freedom) fries cuz they're not skinny fries like, say mcdonalds, but they're not the thick cut steak fries either. and the kitchen is small enough where they fry them up constantly so you usually end up with a piping hot batch. you order at a window and your food comes out to you through another window. it's a like a roach coach without wheels. where else in malibu can you roll up and get a quick bite to eat without being asked if you want flat or sparkling water? remember though, this place is quite possibly the only store in malibu that doesn't take american express (or any plastic for that matter). the country mart has a big parking lot out back but you'll have to fight for spaces on the weekends between the harley-davidsons, the bentleys and range rovers and the occasional armored suburban with governor schwarzenegger (who i've seen at the country mart, twice) and all the while, you sit in the quaint little park surrounded by boutique stores as you eat at a picnic table next to some movie star wearing a cap and sunglasses trying to get their bratty undisciplined 4 year old to stop screaming. but you don't care cuz you're off in burger heaven secretly laughing inside at these new money idiots who litter the socal landscape. read more

Never in my life have I posted a complaint online before, but after a bad experience here the other day, I felt compelled to share. As a vegetarian, I ordered (or so I thought) a veggie burger. When my order arrived, I excitedly sunk my teeth into....beef! Oops! Not sure where the miscommunication occurred, but either way, I was hoping they would work with me to sort it out. I politely walked up to the pick-up window to explain, but the cook had no interest in assisting me. So I got back in the now long line and after 10 minutes explained the mishap to the man taking the orders. He shouted "You ordered meat!" I then calmly asked if there was a way to sort it out and he shouted, "It is your fault!" I would not go to this place again it's kind of expensive for the quality of food it sells. I got the malibu chicken burger which was okay for what it was, nothing impressive. they overtoasted my top bun and it was super crumbly. my boyfriend got the crispy chicken sandwich and it looked like they used a tyson chicken patty, which no shade to tyson chicken patties but they are NOT worth $10. the veggie burgers also looked like they are frozen heated patties. they also did not have many combo options so we paid $10 for 2 orders of french fries. $52 for 2 orders of fries and 2 veggie burgers and 2 chicken burgers and the food wasn't very flavorful?
