This place definitely does NOT deserve the low rating it has. Decent items are the fish tacos, fish and chips, and they have a decent taco Tuesday. I think the appetizers are 1/2 off for happy hour. The only criticism I have for this place, is that the crab cakes aren't like decadent expensive crab cakes, but it's understandable. So, I have a new rating system......I will write what I feel honestly about an establishment. The only ratings I will give are 5 stars, which is enjoyable, or 3 stars which is "needs work." read more

The food is great. No question. So why the 2 stars? Malibu's pricing is too ambiguous and comes off as shady. We went for happy hour. The menu said limit of 2 underneath a sign that said half off of starters and wine & beer. I asked the unhappy cashier if that meant a customer could only get 2 alcoholic drinks max. She said yes. Turns out a limit of 2 means that you only get 1/2 off of two items counting both food and drink. And it will be the two cheapest items. This was not only super unclear but deliberately deceiving based on the response from their workers. Our meal was almost $70. Ridiculous and although I was a long time customer, I won't be back. Although the food is pretty good, the service is absolutely appalling. We order take out frequently, usually pretty large orders, so we spend quite a bit here. The apathetic young ladies at the register or on the phone taking orders should always be a sign of what's to come. Orders are NEVER correct. Something is always missing or not prepared as ordered no matter how many times we specify. Need extra dressing for your salad? It will be forgotten. Want to add something to your salad and even pay to add it? It will be left out. Need sauces on the side? Good luck. Often items ordered are completely missing altogether. We have even been charged for a complete duplicate entree even though we only asked for one of said item. It's absolutely horrendous and unfortunately we have now crossed Malibu Eatery off of our list of lunch and catering options. Spend your money elsewhere where they will actually give you what you order, as you order it -- and maybe even with a smile (cause you won't get that here!)! read more

Just enjoyed the Baja Fish Tacos here; if you're having a cheat day these are the bomb!!! All of the fish is high quality (salmon on "Mediterranean" salad has a great dressing, and the fried fish sandwich are my other two favorites; I also recommend the seared tuna is plentiful and seared perfectly (very little). Crystal, who took my order and delivered my food outside, was so professional and friendly, I had to ask her name and post a review... I observed an older gentlemen speak with her about his food after he was finished, I believe he was used to a different fish with his order; Crystal apologized and let him know that next time he can request the other fish, whatever he wants, it's not a problem, and then she thanked him for letting her know. Management and owner, please take note of this exceptional employee, you have a manager in the making and this kind of customer service is rare to come by these days! read more

My wife and I are always on the lookout for healthy, flavorful food options in the South Bay and Malibu Eatery in Redondo Beach checked ALL the boxes. Tucked just beneath the Redondo Beach King Harbor welcome sign, the location in Redondo Beach is easy to find with plenty of parking. We ordered the California Bowl and the Street Corn Bowl (we like to share each others orders) and both were absolutely delicious. But what stood out most is that the food is clean. Fresh ingredients, great flavors, and you walk away feeling good about what you ate. We're already planning our next visit for Taco Tuesday! I had not been here for a long time. Since it was Tuesday I went for the taco tuesday deal. Fish was ok, tortilla for each taco disintegrated when picking it up. It looked, tasted like it had not been cook hardly at all. Bottom was just mush. It was just very bland. The condiment area they used to stock with, salsa, lemons, chiles etc sit empty. I asked for salsa and recieved two containers. One had salsa the other was just contained red water and no tomato, onion etc. The soda machine has one item on it, the rest sit unmarked and empty. Im not sure if they are closing down or business is just bad, but I wont be back. The gal that helped me was very nice. read more

The clam chowder was decent. The feta cheese fries were ok except they forgot to give us feta cheese and we had to ask for it. Burger was somewhat passable but was dry and we had to ask for the sauce they said was inside but they apparently forgot to put on. The fried fish taco was ok . I didn't finish my grilled fish taco because the fish didn't taste good and the uncooked tortilla was mushy and fell apart before the first bite. We came here because we were given a gift card. But in the past couple of years quality has really gone down hill. I used to love this place back when it was called Malibu Fish grill but unfortunately it's gone downhill. I suppose it's telling that there was no one eating there the past few times we went in. The fish sandwich used to truly be the best around and have a nice fat chunk of crisp, lightly battered fish but the sandwich I had this last time was all bread with very little fish. Salads are still fresh but much smaller than before as well. They used to be so big you could barely finish them. The menu selection is good, the staff is friendly, and the ingredients are still consistently good quality so we will give it another try-- hopefully this was just an off night. read more

We frequent this eatery every couple of weeks when we don't feel like cooking and we want to eat healthy. The food is extremely fresh and tasty. My two favorites are the grilled Chicken tacos and the Keto bowl with grilled chicken. The tacos are stuffed full of hot-off-the grill chicken! The Keto Bowl with cabbage, avocado, chicken (and many other fresh yummy items) comes with an extremely tasty Miso dressing and is absolutely delicious. It's also great with salmon. The restaurant is quite "minimalistic" in decor, and a little chilly inside, but the food is great. My husband loves the guacamole - and if you arrive before 6:00 you can get it for half-off. I walk in 6pm for dinner, place is empty and chairs are on top of about half the tables. When you drive by, you see chairs on tables and think they are permanently closed. Same when you walk up, you ask yourself 'are they open?' Not a welcoming experience, unfriendly girl took my order after pulling out here earpods. I interrupted her music or possibly a phone call. No music playing in the restaurant. Photo was of a beautiful Salmon filet with a Broccoli assortment of veggies and fries for 20 bucks. I say I'll have that, well done. I get No Veggies, the Salmon is a square, not a filet like the Photo. The sauce is not evenly distributed and cooked into the square piece of Salmon. I thought I was getting the 'picture', I'm told the Veggies would be another $5 so I skip them. There is no hello or welcome, girl is argumentative and has no personality or people skills. read more

Normally, I go to the El Segundo location just because it's right next to my work. I've had a couple different items on the menu prior, but this was my first time ordering the following items. There's not much parking as the lot is limited to maybe less than 10 spots. Also, during these COVID times, they offer patio seating, to-go, and curbside service. Guacamole & Chips - Freshly fried tortilla chips and guac. How can you go wrong? The guacamole had a lot of lime flavor to it. I'm assuming partially for flavor and partially to prevent it from turning brown. It was delicious and obviously a great starter. $8 French Fries: Shoestring fries served with a side of ketchup. The fries were a little soggy by the time we ate it. It would have been much better with a crunch but it was wrapped up in the box with the wrap so the steam made everything somewhat soggy. $4 Chicken Avocado Wrap - Chicken, avocado, brown rice, tomatoes, romaine, shredded cheese, house dressing. I thought the wrap had great flavor to it. It would have been really good if it was served with some hot sauce or some type of salsa. $9 Overall, I really liked the chicken avocado wrap and the chips & guac and would definitely get it again. I have been a fan of Malibu Fish Grill for a very long time. It was characterized by great food, affordable prices and a nice unpretentious setting. At some point it became "Malibu Eatery", a weird name that sounds more like a cafeteria for a hospital. Never liked it but still admired the place and its food and prices. The pandemia and work took its toll on all of us plus work demands making me stay away from this location for a while. Today I came back to my beloved Malibu Fish Grill aka Malibu Eatery. I was surprised, a salad cost me $23 dollars ! Just a salad and a glass of water. Wonder what it could had cost me had I ordered what I used to order just 2 years ago. The location does not look as well kept as it was back then, as well as service not being as friendly as it used to be. Perhaps this eatery is trying to become more upscale, charging higher prices for its products, but you can not go upscale scaling down from using silverware to using plastic forks and knives. At least show arguments for a higher price using real silverware as opposed to plastic cups and forks/knives. I love this place, and now I find myself in a dilema, but I feel it is my obligation to write these words of constructive criticism in order to call the attention of management as well as patrons, it is sad to see a great place fall like this. read more

Where to start: Yikes If you plan on coming here for you lunch break, don't bother. I ordered a simple chicken sandwich as a wrap at 12:23. Food didn't come till 12:55. 30 minutes for a chicken wrap? Mind you, there is nobody here, maybe 3 other 2 tops. Usually you never know what obstacles they might be tackling in the back that would cause a wait, but I can literally see the kitchen and the chefs just f***ing around doing nothing. After the first 20 minutes, I had to go back inside and ask the status on the order. Both cashiers and cooks looked at me while standing around doing nothing. Only after I asked the cashier what was going on did I see the cooks start moving. I also asked for water upon arrival, and the cashier told me they had to bring it out. I wasn't allowed to grab a cup and walk over to the free standing soda fountain. Ridiculous. I asked them if they were able to do the chicken sandwich as a wrap. The cashier looked at me confused like this was some insane request. She had to ask 2 people if that was ok. Not sure why this would be an issue, since they serve other sandwiches as wraps also. I ended up telling them don't bother if it was too "confusing". Cashier said "ok not a problem", and brought it as a wrap anyway a half hour later. Also, make sure you ask for napkins and utensils when you first order, they don't bring you anything when the food comes out, and nobody comes to check and see how you are doing or if you need anything else. Only pro I have is the wrap was tasty, but definitely dry and I would suggest more sauce. Also, I'm still starving after paying almost 12 bucks for a tiny basic chicken wrap. Skip this place if you're in a rush. There are much better options all around. read more

We have been coming to this place for years but I'm just fed up with them regularly closing the restaurant way earlier than they say they're open. The girl at the front counter couldn't care less about anybody who walks through that door. She is beyond unpleasant and the two cooks in the back are the ones who don't want to work anymore and push to close the restaurant down early, clean up and get out of there. I like trying out new items like the sweet corn bowl (warm bowl with rice, corn, beans and your choice of protein), and I also have my go-to faves (ahi poke bowl, which is more like a salad and quite refreshing).
