I love a good hot sandwich, and this one might be one of the best I've had. The marinara tasted super fresh and just pulled everything together perfectly. My brother raved about this spot and I was craving sandwiches so I offered to pick us up lunch after he recommended I stop here. I wasn't prepared but big advice: bite with caution. Their focaccia x ciabatta hybrid is certainly unique/delectable, but near took out the roof of my mouth with my first bite. Once that pain subsided though, I can see the texture appeal in these sandwiches. I got the Calabrian Turkey which was served with sharp thick slices of Hooks 1 year cheddar, and hefty iceberg leaves. I was thinking these would be great sandwiches to take to the beach- they really hold up. I was just bummed that my brother found his BLT disappointing. I read off all his mods verbatim: light mayo, add onions (extra cost), and they were crossed off the order ticket, but the main call-out was that it came drenched in mayo (and a side of mayo provided as well, ha)...so maybe big modification people this isn't for you. Shout out to the giant brown butter chocolate chip cookie with sea salt or whatever it was on display that was so irresistible to my eyes...and actually tasted how it looked. Spent a pretty penny here but understand the location (along with difficult parking) probably warrants it. I've ordered from Bread Head regularly, which is why this review exists. On Friday around 2:30 PM, I ordered a sandwich and specifically asked for light mayo. What I received looked like someone emptied half a jar onto the bread. The photos speak for themselves. If this is what "light mayo" looks like, I'd hate to see the regular order. The problems didn't stop there. The lettuce was soggy, the bread wasn't toasted and the tomatoes looked bruised and well past their prime. This wasn't a sandwich made with any sense of care or pride. It was sloppy. What makes it worse is that I brought my sister here instead of one of her usual sandwich spots because I've had enough good experiences to recommend it. Of course, the one time I convince someone else to try it, this is what comes out of the kitchen. We also asked for Zab's hot sauce and somehow ended up with extra mayo and spicy mayo instead, along with additional charges. Between that and paying $4 for a Diet Coke, the entire experience felt like nobody was paying attention. Every restaurant has an off day. I get that. But when you're charging premium prices, customers shouldn't have to wonder whether anyone looked at the sandwich before wrapping it up. I went in expecting to order a sandwich but they were only serving burritos. They open early, but anything before 11 AM is strictly burritos. Being that this was my first time coming in and then finding out that they only serve burritos if you're ordering before 11 AM doesn't make sense. You're a sandwich shop. When I first passed Bread Head there was a long line and I was immediately intrigued. I tried Bread Head on a Saturday shortly after they opened. It was not busy which I appreciated. It's a nice vibe sandwich shop that I imagine is great to get lunch at after a beach day. I decided to share a sandwich with my boyfriend and we decided on the cold Tuna Salad sandwich. I really don't know if it what we ordered but this sandwich was below mid. It was so bland and disappointing. I also assumed the bread would be nice and fresh but it felt like two day old bread. Nothing special at all. It also was $16 and felt too expensive for what it was. I thought I'd at least get a pickle...lol. I also ordered an iced coffee and it was so bitter. I asked for oat milk and got charged like a dollar more for a SPLASH of oat milk which felt kind of ridiculous. Quality of their sandwiches is horribly inconsistent. Ordered a chicken parm today and the chicken was unbelievably burned. Hard to imagine an employee overcooked it this poorly, looked at it, and still proceeded to put it on a sandwich instead of in the trash. Expect a lot more when they're charging $20 a sandwich. Conveniently located a couple of steps before the Manhattan Pier, came in on a Saturday mid morning, it was already busy with a line that moved along quickly, was greeted by the friendly cashier ( forgot her name ). I heard about this place via Instagram. They have an excellent location right by the pier. It's a great place to pick up sandwiches if you're hanging out at the beach. Sometimes, there's a line out the door if you come during peak lunch hour but there is also an option to order online. They have tables inside and outside if you choose to dine in. Staff is friendly. My husband and I tried two of their sandwiches: the Combo Grinder and the Turkey Pesto. The Combo Grinder is very meaty, thick, flavorful and a good option if you like Italian style deli meats. I personally prefer the lighter, fresher, nutty flavor profile of the Turkey Pesto. Both sandwiches were tasty and overall good but not amazing. The chicken salad sandwich had huge chunks of chicken, many of which had no sauce, just plain chicken. There's an ingredient in there...something spicy? Horseradish? Whatever it was, terrible. Heard good things about this place and have been wanting to try it. Cozy spot steps away from the pier, plenty of metered parking in the area. Went on a weekday (mid-day) so not very crowded. Always wonderful! Lovely to try the new breakfast menu items (8AM-11AM weekends). The Cowboy breakfast burritos really surprised and impressed me. The Rabiola Seasonal Jam was a group favorite. Probably one of the few places in Manhattan Beach downtown where you can get your meal to-go and not have to wait for a while. It was pretty busy when we came for a late lunch around 1:45pm. You can order online ahead or order in-person at the counter. It took 10 min or less to get our sandwiches. We got the chicken salad and the combo grinder. I actually preferred the chicken salad but only because the combo grinder has so many ingredients that eating it was a challenge. The chicken salad is a solid average sandwich, but i do like some spice so i added some hot sauce at home. I have two comments about the combo grinder. One there needed to be more dressing like your typical Italian sub and two the bread is not best because there's so many ingredients that the bread just slides off, it's too thin and not rustic enough. Ordered the combo and the pork and broccoli. Was the first to arrive in the morning but they had a lot of online orders so it took a while. The person that took our order informed us that all of the sandwiches are now half sizes automatically and they don't do the full giant sandwiches anymore. The bread they use for the sandwich was the highlight for me. They use zabs hot sauce and have little plastic containers available if you ask! Our favorite of the two we chose was the combo, it was fresh but downside was you had to eat it quickly as it got very soggy. Man, I hate parking in Manhattan Beach, but it's not so bad for a weekday lunch. The focaccia is worth the stress of parking - it's thin, with an amazingly crunchy crust. The Combo Grinder is a good choice, just be sure to eat it fast as the dressing will soak the bread. The meats are reminiscent of BCD's claim-to-fame Godmother, but I think they flavors here are better. I caught the newly released hot sandwiches and tried the Roast Pork & Broccoli Rabe. The bitter broccoli overpowers the pork, which is a pity because the pork is quite delicious. The Roast Beef is alright, but there's a bit too much arugula, though I love the fresh horseradish. The sandwiches are decent but highlight is the bread. It's fresh baked foccacia that I wouldn't mind eating by itself. They sell their sandwiches in half and full portions. The size of their sandwiches is a very common question, so they have the sizes on display by the register to explain it. Basically a half sandwich is going to be the typical portion size you'd have for lunch. It's a square of foccacia bread but it will be sliced in a diagonal so you get two pieces. A full portion is twice this amount and it'll be so much that you can expect to get it on two separate trays. The service was friendly and pretty quick. We waited about 10 minutes for our food on a Thursday afternoon. There were a decent amount of customers there but it wasn't so loud that we couldn't hold a conversation. We got the roast beef and combo grinder. The roast beef was very tasty and more flavorful than the combo grinder. The Combo grinder was a sandwich packed with protein if that's what you're going for. The only downside I noticed with the combo grinder was what happened every time I took a bite. The sandwich contents would get pushed to the opposite side despite the toothpick going through everything. Don't forget their Zabs bottle that you can bring to your table. It's a chili sauce that goes REALLY well with the sandwich. It was a little pricey for sandwiches but that's just the area we live in I guess.
