Their direct employees, in particular, did excellent work and were professional on site. There were a couple of drawbacks that keep this from being a full five stars. First, the project took significantly longer than expected. There didn't seem to be much formal project management, so it was often unclear when work would happen or who would be coming by. If you value tight schedules and proactive communication, you may need to push for updates. Second, the subcontractors they used weren't top-tier. The plumbers and electricians I've worked with independently were faster and more reliable. Again, their in-house crew was great -- the inconsistency mainly came from subs. The project was fairly extensive, even if just a kitchen remodel; we bumped out from the existing kitchen wall about 5'9" x 24'. The foundation had to be engineered pretty heavily and everything had to be tied in and reinforced, thanks to Oakland codes and the fact that we are on a hillside. Close friends of ours recommended Colin; he had done work on a place they owned in Orinda, their current home here in Oakland and for family members. We liked the way that Colin and Dan, who was the foreman on our job, were able to work with the architect. There were some practical solutions that needed to be worked out, and their ideas were of definite value. We especially appreciated over the long run that they -- and especially Dan, as he was on site almost every day -- were able to interpret the plans and, if necessary, suggest modifications that were doable and practical. The workers all ended up being reliable and on time, and they were very good about cleaning up daily. The work areas were kept very well separated from the living areas, and our personal space was respected. We did not move out, were on site daily, and when we no longer able to use the kitchen they set up a sink for us on the deck. Lots of lots of little things done "right." Dan said that they usually see that things settle over about a year's time, so they plan on being back in to take care of any things that need to be tweaked/touched up. Gen-tech is talked up on r/oakland and my spouse was considering some foundation work - these were the deciding factor in going with them over similarly priced bids. Due to the scheduling issues, we will not be using them for foundation work. We started contacting them in July. Our sidewalk compliance wasn't completed with certificate in hand until the end of September. The actual "doing" of the sidewalk only took one day + drying time. But, the scheduling took several rounds of back and forth emails + eventually my spouse calling. Did it get done eventually? Yes. If we were selling and not playing catchup after buying a house pre-market would this timeline have been acceptable to us? Probably not. What broke on the backend? I don't know. Was it delayed because it was a "small" (5k) job? Was it just the season? Who knows. If scheduling for this portion of the business is a ritual problem for them, why not consider a platform like jobber to keep the bids all organized? Anyway, it is done. And that's unfortunately the best thing one can say about this.
