Benchmark just completed a new kitchen for us in Emeryville. The kitchen has transformed our home, and the work was top quality. The whole process was smooth from start to finish, with frequent updates from Jason and Chris. When they found hidden problems or we requested changes, they were quickly on it. They added an exhaust vent the property lacked, brought the electrical up to code, and dealt with all the permits and inspections. Fantastic experience. read more

I wanted to update my review. Jason and Scott reached out to me a few weeks ago, and along with their employee Tony they did everything the right way. They came out and inspected the porch and saw how poorly it was originally constructed. They were able to fix everything the correct way and it now looks fantastic. As for the fans, it turns out they were originally hung with the wrong type of box, and they fixed that as well. The entire process was a much-needed breath of fresh air and the three of them could not have handled it better. This was the best way to deal with a bad experience as possible and my wife and I are thrilled. read more

Updated 7/8/2015: Following up on Jason's response below - No, we do not expect every contractor (no idea why Jason decided to include the term "blue collar" below as I find that term to be derogatory and unnecessary) to jump at the chance to earn our business. What we do expect is for the contractors that do meet with us and say they are going to provide an estimate by a certain date actually follow through and do just that. If they will not be doing so or are not interested in the project, then communicate that to us ASAP (not 2 weeks later) so we are not waiting around thinking an estimate will be provided. Jason asked us what our ideal budget and completion time-frame looked like and we gave that info to him, but also emphasized that this was our first remodeling project and we are flexible on both timing and budget since we really did not have a good idea of how long these projects would take or what the actual costs would be (hence the request for an estimate). We also let him know that based on the estimate he provides, we would pick which projects we want to tackle immediately and which items we would tackle later on. Jason said that as long as we are flexible on the budget and timeline, he was interested in coming out to look at the work because he "never likes to turn down business." We never "pressed" him as he states below. If he was truly hesitant, he could have simply declined to meet with us at any point during the process. Yes, we had another contractor walk through the house with Jason. Neither Jason nor the other contractor expressed any concerns about this in-person, during or immediately after the walk-through. In fact, this approach is quite common as several of our friends have handled multiple bids the same way. This also occurs when contractors are bidding for public projects. In addition, our realtor also recommended we do this as he sees this occur frequently and it minimizes inconvenience for the buyer and seller of a property. Contractors all know they are bidding against each other and none of the other contractors we met with had an issue with this approach. Only Jason did. It's unfortunate that Jason thinks people do not view General Contractors as being as skilled and educated as other service providers. My wife is an Attorney in the construction industry and my immediate family consists of Engineers who work closely with contractors on a daily basis. We have yet to met a contractor who wasn't highly skilled or educated in comparison to peers within the service industry. All of our communication with Jason was respectful and we valued his advice and ideas as he provided great feedback on our project during the walk-through. Never once did we disrespect Jason as he states below and if in fact at any point he felt disrespected, that was never communicated to us. Ultimately, I do not think Jason is a bad person or a bad contractor. Quite the contrary actually since he was our preferred contractor heading into this process. I liked his approach to the project and his honesty about challenges we could face during the process. All valuable traits that are helpful to first-time remodelers like us. What is upsetting and disappointing is how Jason called me 2 weeks after our meeting and 1 week after his estimate should have been provided to try to blame me for his lack of communication and failure to provide an estimate. Hopefully Jason takes this review to heart and uses this as an opportunity to communicate more effectively with potential clients. If he truly valued my time and his as he states below, he would have 1) backed out of the project at the site when I informed him another contractor would be present, and 2) not waited 2 weeks to tell me he would not be providing an estimate. In the future, I'll be sure to tell contractors early-on that they will be competing with other contractors and potentially walking-through with multiple contractors to avoid similar situations to this one. I hope this review helps prospective clients in situations similar to ours. I wish Jason the best moving forward. read more

This may be an unusual review -- because it's not the work that the Benchmark team did: it's about what they have done SINCE completing the job. I wrote an earlier review about their commitment and organization. But I have two kids and family members who spend a good bit of time at our house, so from time to time things get broken -- it happens. The Benchmark team has a warranty that they commit to placing on the work they have done. But to be honest, it's easy for someone to say "we'll stand behind you." It's another thing to actually have them do it. When things have gone sideways, we have been able to reach out to Jason and/or Scott by phone and email, and they have shown up to make a tweak sometimes as quickly as the same day. Honestly, that's impressive and pretty wild given how busy the Bay Area real estate market it. My family and I are grateful, so I fully recommend. read more

Jason and Scott -- and their team including Chris, Kenny, Mike and more -- are fantastic talents. But here's what is best about them, in my opinion: By the book. What you see is what you get. On paper and in practice. There is something...unexpected and sometimes awkward about that, but I can respect it: the job goes down on paper, and what comes out on the other side is what you ordered. Nothing missing, some extra touches here and there to make the client happy, but not anything that would change the scope of the project. As someone who runs an engineering firm, I can appreciate the value of a scope of work document -- and anyone who has watched a home improvement / renovation show knows one thing: things have a nasty habit of getting out of hand, expanding in terms of process and cost. That didn't happen here. The team did a great job; changes to the project were based on requests that my wife and I made from time to time. And to top it off, the Bliss Brothers (as I prefer to think of them!) put in writing that they warrant their work for something like a decade. GUESS WHAT? They do. We needed them to come back when something went wrong with the sink -- and they did, within about 48 hours, almost a year after the job was completed. NICE. Reliable. Men of their word. They showed up on time, were trustworthy and professional, courteous -- even made nice with the dog, and considering that we ended up living in the house for part of the renovation (with an infant, so that added an unanticipated twist to the project when we had to move out of our prior house early), the group's collective attitude made the process easier to manage all around. All of this does not actually do justice to their raw talent: my wife and I bought a Pleasant Hill house that needed so much work we actually got it below asking price (when's the last time that happened in Poet's Corner?)! From plumbing to electrical to a cockeyed kitchen, the house needed a LOT of work. The Benchmark team gutted the kitchen; modernized and opened it up; led the staining of the floors; a redo of the electrical panel; created a proper bathroom (when we bought the house, the bathroom was IN THE CLOSET in the master suite, completely out of code and basically unusable -- now it's modern, tiled, marbled and gorgeous). They created French doors, installed our lighting (including one Restoration Hardware pendant and relocated the fan that I crazily wanted to hold onto); repainted the house, replaced all the doors; built out a new deck where there wasn't one before. All in a 1140 square foot house. So yeah, they did a great job. We're grateful, and plan to approach them first about our next project! Contact me with any questions. Jason, Scott and company: THANK YOU. -- Jonathon and Mabel (and Hunter!) read more

They did a fantastic job. Very thorough, very well prepared every day and incredibly respectful of our home. If recommend to anyone.

STAY AWAY! I never have been a big review poster but Jason has motivated me. We hired Jason and his team for painting the inside of our house prior to putting it on the market. We had an original quote to finish on a Tuesday. We discussed and amended it to finish by the Saturday before (including increased costs) since we had a lot of subsequent work to get done after painting. He ended finishing on Monday and then demanded the full cost and threatened us with a lien and so we ended up paying grudgingly. Beyond these strong-arm tactics, it seems that there are two groups of painters...group A, which did a good job, and group D, which not only did a poor job but also acted in a very unprofessional manor. Unfortunately, we got a mix of both. In terms of painting, the results were less than expected due to lack of care (e.g. painting over paper that was stuck to the wall, mistakes, baseboards only half painted, not filling cracks or holes, etc.). My wife and I spent every night going over and cleaning up spills on our hardwood floor and fixtures not to mention on our furniture. Beyond these issues are also those where some of the painters acted very unprofessionally and treated our house poorly. This includes two straight nights where we had to cleanup their half-eaten food on our dining table so that we could eat as well as having to clean the mess they left in the bathroom (e.g. mud in the bathtub, empty red bull can in the sink, etc.) so that my kids could take a bath and get ready for bed. He also had a father/son team that had a blow out argument in my front yard. In addition, some of the painters stole and drank soft drinks from our refrigerator in the garage. Finally, others broke and painted on our curtains, which he did replace, but with inferior materials. Overall, based on our treatment I would STAY AWAY from Jason and Benchmark. read more

We had GAP come out to bid our window replacement project. We had LEAKY windows... I mean having to change out bath sized towels once-twice a night because they were soaked and no one could figure it out! Until Chris and Ricky came on the job. I've been waiting to write a review until we got a decent amount of rain (new windows have been in a year).... and I am hoping that last night the combination of wind and rain could put our window installation to the test. Our windows were all dry! Chris helped to allay our fears about using retrofit windows logically (did I mention our windows are complicated dormer windows?) and Ricky found what was an error in the original flashing installation (there was evidence of multiple leaks that had not been disclosed prior to our moving in). I will say that there were a few times when communication was halting and there was one error made but righted and so we are happy with the job. If you need windows fixed or have leaky windows - Chris and Ricky are your guys! read more

We used Benchmark Construction for an office project in July and that went so well that we came to them again for a home project. A pipe underneath our kitchen sink broke and the water leak created bad mold condition. Benchmark Construction responded to our urgent call to come out and identify and stop the leak...and they did a fast and professional job repairing the broken pipe. A mold remediation company had to rip out the cabinetry, countertops and backsplash all along the wall of the sink, requiring us to replace all of this as well as the rest of the kitchen's cabinetry, countertops, and backsplash. Benchmark's owner Jason and project lead Chris came out again to walk the insurance adjuster through the damage and then promptly submitted a quote so that we could get the money we need to replace everything. We are still in the process of finalizing our claim with our insurance company, so the replacement/remodel work has not begun, but I wanted to thank Benchmark's Jason and Chris for urgently coming to our aid and assisting us in the insurance claim process, along with giving us recommendations for selecting the new cabinetry, countertops and finish materials. I highly recommend Jason and Chris with Benchmark Construction. read more

I have a close personal friend who hired this company to redo their kitchen. Each step of the way I have been communicating with our friend and I've heard such good things about them. as someone who has worked in the construction industry for over 20 years it is awesome to have companies like Benchmark continuously setting a higher standard for our industry. The service and communication is awesome! They keep it simple by saying what they do and doing what they say. Their customer experience specialist is a perfect add to their service. it's amazing how a little bit of communication can make you feel like they've gone over and beyond the standard protocol. I was thoroughly impressed after meeting with three of their team members I can see now why our friends went with them. It's important to remember not all General Contractors are the same. Some can do really good work but are terrible at communication some communicate well but are terrible at the work. Benchmark seems to do both very well. read more

Jason Bliss owner of GAP Home Repairs saved my sanity.....close to Christmas time even. I will never use another contractor....only GAP. He is thorough and considers all aspects of your repair requests. He has his sub contractors come over individually to assess the proper way to move forward with a certain repair then Jason can give you his most accurate bid on the job. And, he sure came in on time for me! I had wall work which literally changed the shape of a room, under house piping repairs and roof and attic repairs. Only call GAP. You will not be disappointed. read more

I hate to make negative comments about any business , but this experience has left a bad taste with me. I have used GAP Home Repair on two occasions. In March I called and asked them to replace a lockset. The service was first rate! The price was fair and the repairman was punctual and professional. More recently I requested their help with what seemed to be a straight forward installation of bath faucets. The handyman was very punctual and very professional. I give them high marks for that, but everything else was very different. Day 1 ended with the handyman leaving with a banged up thumb; no propane torch to complete the task. Day 2 ended with me being left with my main water shut off and having to call a professional plumber to complete the work GAP started. The project was a stretch for Jason and it was clear that things did not go as planned for me or for him. I believe these guys have a good reputation for doing very straight forward tasks. Do proper due diligence when you ask them about more complex repairs. read more
