It was my first time and the worker at the register was explaining to another customer in front of me the menu. I eavesdropped and what he described for each menu item sounded good. I was craving sushi so I got the "King of Fire" maki rolls and a Spicy Ahi hand roll. I love ahi, but personally I wasn't a fan of the ground up ahi for both orders. It was fresh, but I just didn't like the mushy texture. Also, the maki rolls were heavy and massive than what I'm used to, it was hard to pick it up with my chopsticks so I used my hands. They were definitely generous with the portions, but it was a little too much for me. Flavors were decent, I find the crunch factor from the corn flakes was interesting. When in the Aiea are I tend to frequent the roast duck house. Although they're awesome, I was craving some sushi. Makoto sushi popped up and we decided to try it out. My partner ordered the tempura and spam plate. She said it was ok. I ordered the ahi katsu and tempura plate. After her commentary on the food I was skeptical. I tried tempura and I agree with her. It was "ok". However, when I took a bite of the ahi katsu my whole attitude changed. It was fantastic! I gave her a piece (since it comes with four large pieces) and she enjoyed it as well. They also have an extensive sushi menu which I'll be trying out next time. If you're on the area go check them out. After your meal you could even get some shaved ice, samurai or boba. Okay I finally got to try this place because their business hours were usually when I was working and then I couldn't make it on Saturday mornings so I was so excited to try this on a weekday! Their servings are HUGE! It will definitely fill you up and they have some pictures as well so you can see what they have. It makes you want to order EVERYTHING. The portion is huge and the sushi roll is huge so I had to eat it in half because it's big. Atmosphere - Bright and colorful! There's no seating inside but there's seating outside for the restaurants there in general. Service - Makoto san is SO NICE!! I went there for my birthday and I was told him I was just excited to finally try their food and my partner mentioned that it was my birthday. My partner and I bought several plates (we took leftovers home because our eyes were hungrier than our stomachs). And he gave me a free drink for my birthday. SO SWEET! Cost - The plates are around $16 and it's a good amount of food, it really fills you up. Parking - It's in that same building plaza area as Aiea Bowl and all those restaurants below. Makoto is a hidden gem in Aiea! We ordered sushi for two and got the Jin Roll, Forever Roll, and Goldfish. We were not expecting how much food we'd get, the portions were huge and we had leftovers. Everything came with a pre-dressed salad, wasabi, and pickled ginger. Our favorite was the Forever Roll which had tempura and spicy ahi. The Jin roll had ahi, crab and salmon, and the Goldfish also had ahi, crab, and topped with ahi, salmon, and unagi. Heads up on parking: there is a lot, but it's busy and partially blocked off due to some construction. We ended up parking by Aiea Bowl and walked down the stairs (elevator was out of order when we went, 5/20/25). Not a big deal, but something to keep in mind. There are five outdoor tables that are shared among the businesses in the plaza, so seating is limited. Drinks are available from a fridge inside, it's bottled/canned only, no fountain or self-serve. Came here to pick up lunch and I was very impressed by the customer service. The cashier was friendly and patient with us as we decided among the many rolls to choose from. He even included a menu in our bag to take home and look at. The rolls are about $14-$18 each and even though the price seems steep for a roll, once you see this bad boy, you'll realize why. The roll was HUGE. Like I'm talking PHAT. I was full after eating half the roll and saved the rest. They did not skimp on the crab salad on top of the roll and the shrimp tempura was a big boy too. It was well sauced and not too spicy for me. There is parking on the first, second, and third floor, but it can be hard to find parking with all the amazing eateries in the center. This review is like seven years in making! I love Makoto Sushi! I loved it when I lived and worked in Pearl Harbor when I was active duty. I loved it when I lived in Aiea. Don't let the seemingly confusing parking structure and that McDonald's drive thru stop you from grabbing sushi here! To locate Makoto Sushi, head to the second level of Aiea Shopping Center in Aiea Heights, the same parking level as McDonald's, Ice Garden, and Roast Duck Kitchen (another lunch I highly recommend!). I got this place from one of my coworkers, so I wanted to try it out. Seriously, amazing customer service/experience. We got there around lunch time and we ordered, it was a bit a wait but the owner got out and gave all the customers that were waiting outside patiently cold water bottles and even apologized for the wait... couple minutes later we got our food and boy oh boy they didn't disappoint! What a hidden gem! If you love take out sushi and find youself in aiea before 2:30, stop by Makoto Sushi!! I have no idea why I was in the area, but I just kind of stumbled across Makoto because I parked in the shade and walked over to get shave ice. Sushi is my favorite food and obviously I'm going to try a place when I see it. So I walked into Makoto not really expecting that much, but wanting to try it out. I was blown away by all the different combinations of seafood loaded into the rolls. There were pictures on pictures on pictures of so many different rolls, it was honestly a little overwhelming, but in a good way. I was thinking about how many I should take home and share with the fam without going overboard. I liked the pics and very clear written explanation of what is inside each roll. There is another takeout sushi place that I will not name that frustratingly will not write out what is in the rolls so I have to ask every time I order. It's so frustrating because some of the rolls are named after people and give no hints as to what can be in it. So I got a Jin's roll. What is a Jin's roll you ask? Well it is a spicy ahi, ebi and crab roll with salmon sashimi on top. For $17 I was a little skeptical, but the rolls are HUGE! It's worth the $17 price tag imho. The rolls come with a little side salad. I think it's cute and I enjoy salad, but probably unnecessary. The fish was fresh and I was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience here. Definitely take your food home to enjoy because eating in a parking lot is probably not the aesthetic you're going for. You're bound to find something for everyone here at Makoto! I was able to call in on a Saturday afternoon and picked it up in about 15 minutes! You can already tell on the phone that the service is so polite and kind. The sushi was bomb af. We just split the Dragon Tears roll between the 2 of us and it was a pretty big portion. The sushi itself was sooooo tasty and paired perfectly with all the ginger and light salad. Sushi was decent size- not skimpy like other places. Plate came with toss salad with dressing, wasabi and lots of ginger. You can request the amount of spiciness. They're located on the same floor as McDonalds, on the left hand side. There was no line yet but a few people were eating at the tables outside. When you're on a roll the curiosity certainly is fresh! Sadly it came up short for my personal preference in so many ways. I do have a shellfish allergy so I perfectly understand my limitations and have accepted some items I'm unable to have which is understandable. Makoto Sushi keeps popping up in my feeds and seems to focus more in the Instagramable visual stunning sushi rolls that's topped with various items and their "Tempura Roll" section of course all nine has shrimp tempura in all of the items...none for me...."Spicy LOVER Roll" section basically all has shrimp and/or imitation crab in them..."Fresh Fish Rolls" again all has shrimp and/or imitation crab with the exception of the Philadelphia Roll but Salmon and cream cheese...no! "Makoto Special Rolls"...even more shellfish...sigh! Feeling like I'll never be able to try something, the "Special Plate" section had something that got me excited..."Spicy Ahi Plate for $13.95. In this three compartment plate has a small salad with dressing and some ginger and wasabi in the top small section and the main was filled with rice with ahi smothered all over it...my problem it's not cubed but shaved ahi like the area surrounding the bone, it's something that's perfectly normal used in sushi restaurant as you waste nothing but in my opinion is traditionally used in Negitoro. This is plain unseasoned ahi that's either minced or scraped right along the bone omg the texture was so unpleasant which was spread right on the rice with spicy sauce drizzled and the sauce wasn't spicy and didn't season the tuna enough for me though they do provide a shoyu packet I seriously don't see how it would able to save this dish regardless. Delightful gentleman who was nice enough to inform me of the wait due to a large order but two starts isn't because the limited menu as that was my allergy situation, it's the flavorless unpleasant texture fish, flavorless non-spicy sauce, the lack of flexibility when asked if I could not have the crab in the rolls. read more

It's Japanese fusion sushi time! I love that they provide a generous amount of ginger and wasabi. That's right. Your home girl is the one who would ask for extra wasabi. The roll is stuffed with imitation crab or ahi (depending on the one you order). It comes with a side of small fresh lettuce salad too. So far I tried the Jin's special (crab with salmon on top), Dragon Tears (Crab and Spicy Ahi, Crunch, Masago and Green Onion on Top), and your traditional unagi roll. I really like the Dragon tears because of the masago on the top. Boss man and lady are very sweet and kind. Boss man took my order and was honest about the wait time during lunch time prime time (25 minutes). Trust me, the wait is worth it.
